People who are not in the habit of talking with the dead have a hard time imagining what Matt Fraser’s life is like. I added this book to my "Want to Read" shelf in early November. I received a message from Bianca at Gallery Books, asking me if I would like an ARC of Matt Fraser's, "When Heaven Calls" in mid-November and got my copy in late November. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found it very fascinating. Matt Fraser was very engaging and I LOVED the videos he suggested at the end of some of the chapters of him giving readings. The question and answer session at the very end of the book were very interesting. If anyone is curious about psychic mediums, I would highly suggest this book!! Awesome from the "get go" and the next best thing to actually getting a reading from Matt Fraser!!
I'd like to thank Gallery Books for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. If I'd been asked to read and rate this book five years ago, I probably would have turned down the offer, but after I lost my sister (a big believer in mediumship) in 2015, my skeptical view of psychic mediums was completely upended. Ann Marie would encourage me to watch "Long Island Medium," and I would scoff or roll my eyes. She would excitedly point out phenomena that she believed were messages from beyond the grave and I would humor her, but I thought she was kind of manic, always reading way too much into small coincidences. When Ann Marie lay dying and told us she would be sending us signs after she passed, I was still dubious. But the sheer volume and wide variety of signs and messages I received (and still do receive!) from her after her death convinced me, without a doubt, that our deceased loved ones are always nearby, eager to communicate with us if we are open to their presence.
So I opened this book not needing to be convinced that mediums exist. I had never heard of Matt Fraser, though, and I was curious to find out more about him. Is he the "real deal" and, if so, how does he make use of his gift? What I found was a delightful young voice filled with warmth, positivity and hope. It is clear that this man has the gift of connecting with departed souls, and he uses it for the greater good by passing on messages of encouragement and healing to those who need it. Although he never mentions Theresa Caputo in his book, Matt Fraser's background story seems similar to hers--he began connecting with spirits as a young child and was at first frightened by what that entailed. It turns out that he may have inherited his abilities from his Grandmother Mary and his own mother, both of whom had mediumship abilities. (As a devoted grammarian, I'm not sure if "mediumship" is even a word, but here I am using it as both an adjective and a noun. It's a fun term, so why not?!) Matt speaks so fondly of his departed grandmother, who had to put great effort into hiding her gift from his cynical grandfather. His mother did quite a bit of suppressing in front of her husband as well, but it seems the husbands eventually got on board and, in time, everyone rallied around Matt sharing his gift to benefit others.
Skeptics always wonder if people who claim to be mediums are in it for personal gain and glory. Matt's story indicates that he originally resisted his mediumship and never intended to pursue it as a career. He was always drawn toward healing others and studied to be an EMT. He genuinely loved his job in the medical field and was torn about leaving it, but he ultimately decided that he could do more good for others by helping them heal from loss. It all seems very sincere. He has learned a great deal about both living and dying, and he wants to pass on that wisdom so others may embrace joy and live their lives to the fullest. At the end of each chapter, he includes a "Tools for Life" section and a suggested video. I watched several of these videos and just fell in love with this guy's compassionate heart. One video shows him reading two very cynical news anchors who are completely blown away and transformed by the experience. You can tell that it brings Matt great joy to be able to serve people in this way. I believe he is the "real deal."
The book could use a bit of editing, but it should be an engaging read for anyone who is open to the power of spirit!
I loved this book. I read quite a few books by psychic mediums and in "When Heaven Calls" Matt Fraser has such a fresh approach in relating his story. His honesty and compassion are just naturally conveyed in this beautifully written book. I also loved that the end of each chapter was formatted with a "Suggested Video" and a "Tools For Life" summary. This was a very compelling read for me. Thank you to Gallery Books for sending me an ARC for an honest review.
In all honesty, I am not a believer in psychics or mediums. However, I noticed a clip of Matt Fraser performing on stage (on Facebook) and it intrigued me enough that I watched the entire clip. Initially, I thought "he is planting people in the audience to make it seems like he is communicating with their deceased loved ones", but I was drawn to watch several other video clips, including his visits to talk shows. When he provided accurate and detailed readings to the hosts of these shows, who obviously were not planted, I was very confused. The emotion and impact his words had on them could not possibly be faked. How is this possible? In an effort to understand, I decided to buy his book.
I appreciated this book was written in a conversation style. It felt as though Matt and I were sitting together sharing a cup of coffee as he was explaining his profession. Whether or not you are a believer, this book provides fantastic advice for those who have suffered loss and are experiencing crippling grief. I am still not sure what I believe, but I think participating in one of Matt's shows, or talking to him individually, would be a thrilling experience. He is passionate about what he does and seems to care about the people he interacts with.
My only criticism of the book, is that I disagree with him on how one should deal with childhood bullies. As someone who has worked in schools for 20+ years, there are ways to deal with bullies without threatening the schools with social media exposure (which is in essence, bullying the school to get what you want). Every situation is different and it is difficult to provide solid advice on how to deal with bullying in a general sense. My suggestion would be to work with the school, without threats, to find a solution to your problems.
Overall, I am glad I picked up Matt's book. It was an interesting read and allowed me to reflect on those who I have lost over the years.
I truly liked this book. I feel like his writing style doesn't match his in-person personality in an expected way. This is coming from a place of love. I have been to a live event, read the first book (my copy was "conveniently" missing the few pages that denoted the steps for developing your psychic ability), receive the newsletters, and watched the show more than once. You can say with confidence that I am a fan.
I was not expecting this format, tools for life, developing psychic skills, or just in general Q&As. Truthfully, that is truly Fraser. His positive spirit and flamboyant ways just radiate from him pretty much at all times.
I would have liked some passages on spirits that you had poor relationships with. How do you repair or heal a relationship with someone who has passed who has a strong familial tie but not an emotional tie, or someone who was just horrid to you? Does everyone transition to the same helpful, joyful spirit? Does that take away from who they were on Earth, or does that not matter?
Clearly I am still working on some deep resentments. Maybe all the souls work through their ugliness and when they pass through all past hurts are forgiven and it's one big campfire with marshmallows. I hope one day to be there, but sometimes the hurt remains.
Still, I recommend this to anyone who is interested in mediums, psychics, and the afterlife. It has his life story, how mediumship works, "spirit." Truly, it is a nice read.
While I consider myself an open-minded skeptic on the subject of mediums, I find the concept fascinating. I have read more than a few books by those claiming the talent and I have to say that I very much enjoyed this one. Unfortunately, many books in this category are poorly written and edited, taking away from the credibility of the author and the subject matter, and, most importantly, making the experience frustrating for the reader. And while Matt Fraser comes off as a charming young man and his life story appealing, this is not the main reason I appreciated this book. What I appreciated most was the quality of the writing and editing. The biographic chapters are well structured and engaging, each ending with a "suggested video," from Fraser's appearances, and "Tools for Life," which are suggestions from Fraser based on his life experiences and lessons he has learned over the course of his career and developing his talent. The last chapter is done in a FAQ format, answering questions that most of us have about life, the afterlife, and the nature of their interactions. An engaging book that is a pleasure to read and gives us all some food for thought. My thanks to Gallery Books for providing me with an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest opinions.
Reading this helped me with the recent passing of my Father. It confirmed so many things that had happened to me prior to his death and afterwards. I have always believed, but also had a small doubt. Now I know why Things happen they way they do. Like when I think of someone living that I haven't heard from them in a while or wondered how they were doing I would hear from them. Spirits at work. Different things or feelings happen in my life that I have no explanation for and then I say, thank you Dad as I know it was his presence due to smell or feeling. Thank you, Matt. You have brought more healing to me that I didn't know I needed.
I liked the book and it had great information. Gave you more perspective on what afterlife may be like and what our loved ones want for us in this life. He repeats himself a bit and I didn’t love the format but I loved his stories, and his examples of readings he’s done and the lessons that have been taught from the other side.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to more grace moments from Matt. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift ❤️. I’d request a reading (I’ve never had one) I believe and encourage others to know their loved ones are still near.
Matthew Fraser unfolds his journey in a way that is educational and empowering to the reader. I know this book will benefit many people who don’t know about mediumship and life on the other side of the veil.
If you’re a fan of his videos, you will enjoy the book. I just happened to see one on Facebook somehow, and I went down a rabbit hole watching them for days before reading this. It offers a little more background into how a reading goes from his perspective so it’s more detailed than what you see online. It gave them a lot more depth. There are extra little quips about his life, most of which is already out there in the interviews that he has done. But it was still interesting to hear the inside view of how he recognizes spirit. I often feel a little crazy liking the videos so much, but what do you do? You like what you like. Lol.
I have always been a follower of Matt Fraser on social media. I love watching his readings and that made me decide to buy this book. Every page on this book is wisdom learned for me. It changes my perspective in life and makes me appreciate and improve my relationship with others which matters the most while we are still alive. This book is worth reading for and Matt if you read my comment, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I enjoyed this book mostly because I already know mediums exist. Matt Is one of my favorite mediums! I watched his show as well as attended some of his group sessions. I didn’t like that in the book he repeated himself a lot. This book will definitely help someone understand a little bit more about the other side and what to expect from a Medium or Psychic. Matt also touched base on how to ask for signs and what signs are usually sent.
Matt seems to have such a vibrant and fun personality and that energy translates onto the page. Part memoir, part FAQ about medium ship and the spiritual realm, it was an interesting read. Personally, I found the structure and organization to be a little scattered which distracted me from the intended messages but it was unique that he had some accessible tools and recommended video clips following most chapters.
Although many of the topics in this book are covered in other books, the approach to these topics is fresh and better. I enjoyed reading When Heaven Calls. I recommend it for anyone who has experienced loss of a loved one, or is interested in psychics or channeling.
I just love Matt’s energy, and it comes through in his writing too! Simple talk, plain and easy to understand, this book is a good primer for anyone just learning about spirit and our ability to communicate with them!
Really enjoyed this book. Matt's positive and supportive personality shines through with humor and sincerity. It's always a joy to read someone's journey who found his calling and is enjoying and loving his true path.
Very disappointed. It seemed more like an Autobiography. I thought it was going to be in depth accounts of people connecting with loved ones in Heaven.
