I enjoyed this book very much. I have read several by this author and have enjoyed them all.
In this book, Lady Charlotte, who is estranged from her father since birth, finds out that he has died and she is summoned to London for the reading of his will. She is nervous about the trip. She had no relationship with her father as she was sent away after her mother's death due to complications from her birth and she had only occasionally been brought home. He had remarried quickly after her mother's death and had a 12 year old daughter with his 2nd wife. Lady Charlotte believed that her stepmother hated her and wanted nothing to do with her, too. It didn't seem likely that it would be a pleasant experience. In her travels to London, her coach was set upon by highwaymen. When the driver was shot, she climbed out the window to save the day. She also shot one of the highwaymen in the process. Upon arriving at the inn, she met Lord Hudson, a very handsome man, who turned out to be the brother of her dear friend, Isabella.
There is a lot to this story that I won't give away. I liked that Lady Charlotte was a little unconventional. She didn't need to marry for convenience or for any other reason than for love and she was determined that it would be the only reason she would marry. She also didn't need to marry for financial reasons because she was an heiress due to her father's inheritance left for her. I also liked that Lord Hudson began to see that his heart didn't need to be closed off to love, too. Through his conversations with Lady Charlotte, he began to see that he, too, could be happy.
This was a clean, sweet romance with good character development and many facets to the story. It held my interest and provided a good release for a period of time from worldly cares.
I used the Kindle Lender's Library to check out this book and I offer my review willingly.
