In the year 533, Emperor Justinian wished to rebuild Constantinople, Theodora wished to rebuild her reputation, and Maxentius wished to rebuild his life. Three people, three destinies, one story. At the same moment, the legendary city of Carthage is moving against the empire. Six hundred years after it was first destroyed by the Romans, Justinian proclaims: "We must destroy Carthage once more!"
This continues the story of Maxentius, the animal handler / gladiator in service of Augusta Theodora and her husband, Caesar Justinius I.
Here, we find out how Maxentius and Theodora first met as children before we're back in the "present" when Theodora is Augusta and trying to win the people's love (not easy after the events of book 1). Naturally, there are plots to sabotage her, and even a war to be fought, but the woman is very cunning and Maxentius is keeping her safe, too. But at what cost?
The art was relatively pretty. Nothing too special, but nothing too eccentric either (that often doesn't work for me). The colour palette is still very nice though.
I gotta say that while I was pretty much in love with book 1, the story here started to flatten a bit, sadly.
