I hate tournament stories. There are few things an author can do that will bring a story to a screeching halt faster than adding a pointless tournament. They're supposed to make the characters look cool and stuff, but all I can think of is how bored I am, and how pointless it is, and how I wish the author would just get on with it and get back to the actual story already.

I liked this one a lot. The tournament setting was fast-paced enough to not get dull and Yuu Tanaka has improved a lot at writing battle scenes. Some surprises in this one too, like Fran evolving, something I thought would be a ways down the road still. And the Beast King being a cool dude was also neat, as I figured based on Volume 5 he was going to serve as a potential main antagonist. This really feels like the end of Part 1 of the larger narrative since a lot of stuff got wrapped up here while setting up the next big arc. Excited to see where Fran and Teacher's adventures in the Beastman Kingdom lead them!

Never disappointed

So my idea for this book was to take my time, enjoy it since its been sometime waiting to read the next chapter of dear little Fran's and Teachers story, that was quickly ruined. The story and writing is just so much fun to read, and I cant help but smile as I read this light novel.
This novel is a great sequel to the other parts, and I hope Mr. Tanaka continues to make this an incredible series. If you ever happen to read this Mr. Author, your the equivalent to a GodSword! May you have a Chaotic Day! ^.^)/

More Catgirl, her (shadow wolf) dog and her sword.

It's said that no serious fantasy series should be without its magical tournament. We had a cooking tournament, but that does not count. Now, we get the proper tournament we deserve. Fran vs everyone. We have the usual montage, Teacher acting a a fretting father about the mere suggestion that Fran might start to get into some romantic situation, the various shitty enemies that inevitably get wrecked, hints of the smith that may or may not have forged Teacher, and then the various fights of the tournament, Fran's and the other main competitor's.

There's one major problem however, and it's that there is a reversal of timing - an important moment is pushed and shown as a flashback "a few days before" instead of chronological order, and it feels wrong and cheap. Flashbacks involving other characters are fine, but a flashback involving Fran from a day or two before, just to get a surprise in the middle of the tournament is... bad writing. We are following Fran's adventures, and hiding part of them just for effect is a cheap trick.

I still give it a pass, but barely. This is the kind of writing blunder that almost deserves a 3 instead of 4.

Fran made it to rank C for some protection against the Beast King and to join the tournament. The tournament offers ample of opportunity to grow both with skills and as a person. Drawing the attention of the Beast King in the process might be a bit of an issue.

My least favourite volume of the series. There are some great opportunities for character development and some reveals on the mysteries of Fran and Teacher, but I just don't like tournament arcs. Cool fights without any form of tension just don't keep my attention. The trope in which the readers only get to see something after the fact despite the MC knowing it long before in a first person view story is one I dislike on principal, even though it was hardly needed her to create artificial tension since there was no stake in the conflict anyway. The constant wonder why contestants would use all their powerful tricks in a simple tournament was just a minor irritant compared to that.

So, yeah, it had its moments and some good character and world development but with a lot of what for me felt like needless filler. Not necessarily bad, just not good either.

My least favorite of the series so far. While I managed to finish, the oh-so-conveniently tidy stitching together of some of the larger plot elements (Black Cat evolution, potential conflict with the beast kingdom, and all the world breaking elements introduced in the crappy battle arena story) gives me little hope for the series going forward. I’m afraid my son will have to continue (or finish) this series on his own. It certainly had all the tropey elements you would expect in a shōnen story, but not very well constructed or executed. An anime adaptation is due this fall (2022)… and I think I liked the series when it started…

The tournament had some cool battles in a nice, different setting than the usual dungeons. We get to see a whole world of different abilities from different adventurers, many of them returning from previous novels so it was nice to see them again showing off their stuff. The developments with the Beast King were also great! Not so much with Fran's awakening, the whole thing was basically offered on a silver platter, after being hyped as so difficult during the last novel, seeing it resolved so easily felt pretty meh.

A 9hr audio book. This book pissed me off so much, this is book 6 out of the series, no spoilers but this is the first book that started to time jump in the story, so you get a glimpse of what will happen in the future and then they snap you back 6 weeks for 3 chapters explaining how they got there. Its like the worst Sherlock Holmes flash back ever. Overall, this book could have been a 10/10 for me if they would have just told the story in order that it happened.

Inconsistent but still fun

There’s some glaring plot inconsistency between this and volume 5, namely the black cats’ punishment. The fights are still fun but the big plot twist definitely felt a little anticlimactic

"Sword dad" is a solid story and a good worthwhile read. Can't wait for the next book, the wait is going to kill me.

La cosa es asi, este es uno de los que mas me gusto hasta ahora PERO debo decir que la parte del torneo donde da la gran sorpresa, mereció mas. Mas? Sip, fue muy rapido esa parte donde da el salto de poder a tigre negro. Si se hubiera tomado "mas tiempo" hubiese quedado mejor. Digamos algo al estilo super sayayin en su primera vez aunque no tan denso. La evolución debió ser mas intensa y no algo como un cambio de ropa y ya. Lo mismo cuando hace la evolucion por primera vez, debio ser mas intenso y espectacular, es el momento clave de la historia, la gran meta alcanzada!! En fin, aun asi es de los mejores que hay, me encantan los torneos.
