On the verge of entering adulthood, restless college student Eric Holden is told the heartbreaking news: his father has been killed in India. A mysterious guide who was with his father in his last moments tells Eric that the murderer is an unknown animal, one that is responsible for dozens of deaths in the region. He asks Eric to join him in the hunt for the beast and to find out what really happened to his father. Eric agrees and joins the team of hunters sent to find the creature. In a remote, forgotten region of the continent, he encounters the full darkness and violence of nature; and the tables are turned quickly as the mysterious beast is not what it seems.
I really enjoyed this book. The author, Brody, holds back a bit, keeping the tension up. This is what Spielberg did with Jaws= you don't show the monster right away. You're taken on a trip to the plains of Africa through the eyes of "Eric." He has zero experience in hunting, but the people around him are well experienced, including the indigenous people groups. Brody lets you peek into the characters surrounding Eric but only enough to keep you wanting more. Literally, a "good read."
Yeah, I suspended my disbelief. Still, our hero runs and explores and jumps around with a broken ankle. His love interest has a “muscular back” and teases sharks for fun. But, spelling errors. Hate those. Lots of mistaking breath (the noun) with breathe (the verb). Knocked me right out of the story.
The Extinct-A Novel of Prehistoric Terror by Shigeru Brody is a great book. Very well written, it kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t put the book down and read it in a day. Some twists in the plot kept it interesting. Not going to divulge anything else. This is a must read for all monster lovers!!!
being a hunter myself i enjoyed this book and also believe we might still have critters living we don't know about. i have a problem with these great white hunters however not being able to follow tracks or spoor of animal they say was the size of this one. by in large very gory and scary premise
Action packed but something missing: While the book is full of action still something was amiss. At times it just felt mediocre. Maybe lacked a story-line so one may read if looking for plain animal attack action.
I gave this three stars because I had read a VERY similar story in the past. I still enjoyed it, despite some annoying grammatical and sentence structure errors.. I liked the characters, and the descriptions of a part of India I had heard little about before this.
Fast paced action book. Even more interesting in the plot that makes you stop and think. It will make you look over your shoulder when walking at night.
So, this is not the type of book that I normally like to read. I like women authors, I like female protagonists, and there has to be sex and some kind of fantastical element in the book (werewolves, vampires etc.). This book had none of those elements. And yet, for some reason, I was pulled in right from the opening pages.
The opening chapter is told from the POV of prehistoric animals. It shouldn’t be this interesting, but it is. The author does a really good job of describing intense situations and violence. There is not a lot of gore in the book, but it is pretty violent.
Brody, also does a really good job of putting the reader in the scene. I could almost feel the oppressive heat when he describes India.
There is not much more to say about the book. It’s violent, it’s fast-paced, and I liked it.
This one carries you all the way to the end! What a great movie it would be! I would be the first in line to purchase a ticket. This adventure keeps you engaged from start to finish. Make sure all the doors are locked and lights are burning brightly. Read this one today!
Fast moving and attention holding story. Not over the edge but wild enough to keep me reading early into the morning. I’d recommend it to anyone wanting a light, scary, fast moving novel
Good book read the whole thing in one afternoon,Giant hyenas turning the tables on big time hunters.Give the hunter a taste of his own medicine.Man kills for pleasure, why not beasts.
This was a very good read! The tension begins at the start and never lets up! With plots and subplots, twists galore, you won't want to put this story down. Make sure you read in a well lit room!
Interesting story, well written and kept me reading on. Hopefully this author will write a book two. I enjoyed this book and will look forward to another.
