Karina Cardinal Mystery #3

Diamonds & Deception

Rate this book
The rainbows-and-unicorns period of her friends-to-lovers relationship with Mike Finnegan officially over, Karina Cardinal is taking a tactical retreat. No way is she calling him for rescue from one of her infamous "scrapes". Too bad trouble, if not her middle name, is a close relative.

Sadira Manon, friend and colleague of Karina's sister Jillian, has been dropping way too much cash on designer labels for a middle school teacher. Even one who moonlights as a jewelry store clerk. But when she's accused of theft, the loose diamond falling out of her purse is enough for the police to sing the song of their people - Miranda rights.

Karina, Jilly, and Silverthorne Security join forces to investigate who's setting up Sadira to take a fall, and why. They dig up a shady tangle of Russian mob ties and gambling debts. By the time Karina realizes they've dug too deep - and maybe a little too far outside the law - Jillian's in trouble, and the only way out of this particular pot of hot water is to make that phone call...and hope Mike doesn't let it go to voice mail.

Diamonds & Deception is the third book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series by Ellen Butler. It is a great mystery- with drama, danger, intrigue, tension, action, suspense, and more. Even though this is the third book in the series it can be read as a standalone without feeling like you are missing part of the story. But by not reading the first two books, you would be denying yourself some really great stories- and some recurring character introduction, backstories, and other information that would enhance your overall reading experience.
Karina Cardinal is a lawyer turned lobbyist in Washington D.C. She’s smart, controlled, spirited, independent and hard-working. She and her old college friend, Mike, turned their friendship into a relationship, but they’ve hit a bit of a rough patch of late and things start off a bit grim. So, when Karina’s sister Jillian calls her to help out a friend, the two sisters are drawn into a mystery which has them both questioning what is really going on. And when trouble comes calling, and you know it will, because Karina seems to attract it- will she call on Mike for help? Or is this the beginning of the end for them? With a diamond heist, danger, secrets, lies, multiple layers, surprising developments, and so much more to the whole situation than they ever suspected- you know you are in for a very intense ride.
As with the other two books, this is a really great story- but started off a little ‘slow’ in the beginning and I felt my attention wandering a bit in the first third of the book. But once the pace picked up, things really started flowing and the ‘action’ drew me in. Again, the characters are really well developed, crafted into fully realised individuals with their own personalities, quirks, and flaws. And all added to the overall storyline.
There is a “heavier” topic highlighted in this book, which I won’t go into here because I don’t want to spoil the story- but Ms. Butler definitely shone a light on it in a realistic and informative manner- but also with some sensitivity. I can imagine writing about such things would be easy- but again Ms. Butler doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects. She proves time and again what a great storyteller she is.
I am definitely looking forward to more from Ellen Butler!

Thank you, Ms. Butler!

Ellen Butler’s Karina Cardinal Mystery series continues with Diamonds & Deception. Being book number three in the series you would think that you would know what to expect as far as storyline goes but Ellen Butler manages to keep things fresh, adventurous, and always exciting. I never for one moment find myself bored whenever I am absorbed in a Karina mystery.

I would highly recommend that you start with book one, Isabella’s Painting, if you haven’t done so prior to reading this one. The story and the mystery may be different with each book but the characters develop and often repeat. Their side stories keep things multidimensional and to fully enjoy it you will want the full picture.

Diamonds & Deception boasts a sneaky and complicated tale of mistaken identity and blows up into so much more. This has something for everyone in it from romance to mystery and doesn’t let up till the very last page where there is promise of more excitement to come in future books. I can’t wait to see what will come next for Karina and her sleuthing gang!

Diamonds & Deception (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 3) by Ellen Butler is another great tale in this wonderful and addictive series. I love Karina Cardinal and the Silverthorne team. This thrilling mystery keeps you on your toes and the plot is sensational as Ellen carefully weaves all the threads to one explosive story. I also love the way that Ellen comes up with different themes for each story. There is action and romance, lies and deceit, friendship and family. Stolen jewels and mistaken identity lead to kidnapping and drug cartels, human trafficking and suspense.

Karina doesn’t even have to try, and danger comes calling but this time there is more at stake.

I tell you this series should be made into a movie or a tv series. It is entertaining, enthralling and engrossing and I eagerly await the next in the series.

Diamonds & Deceptions is the third novel in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series by Ellen Butler. This is my third novel by this author.

Karina’s relationship with her college friend Mike is hitting a rough patch. When her sister Jillian calls her asking for help involving her friend Sadira Manon, the two are ina mystery not sure of what the full story is.

Will she call on Mike when she finds trouble again?

I really love these mysteries and I look forward to reading one whenever I see a new one is getting released.

These don’t have to be read in order, though some of the characters are recurring and the progression of Karina’s relationship with Mike, the mysteries are very entertaining.

I look forward to another in this series.

This is book three in Butler’s ‘Karina Cardinal Mystery Series’ and having read the two previous novels and having been introduced to Karina Cardinal I was looking forward to this third instalment and was not disappointed. Although book three in a series it can be read as a standalone story, however if read as a series then the reader will have a better understanding of Karina’s backstory.
When a friend of her sister Jillian, Sadira Manon who is a middle school teacher is accused of theft from her moonlighting job as a jewellery store clerk, Karina steps in to help prove her innocence. Karina and Jilly join together with Silverthorne Security to investigate as Sadira is adamant that she is not guilty and that she’s being set up. The more they dig and uncover they soon find themselves amongst the shady and dangerous world of the Russian mob. Unfortunately Karina realises she has discovered too much and that she is in trouble a bit late and so she really only has one hope of rescue and that’s boyfriend and FBI cybercrime’s expert, Mike. However the couple who have had a friends to lovers relationship have hit a difficult patch and so Karina just hopes he will pick up his phone.
The storyline was fast paced and had plenty of drama, suspense and twists and turns in it that kept me guessing and happily turning the pages. I was fully immersed in this crime thriller and I literally could not put the book down. I love Karina, the main character, who really brings the story to life and she is a very relatable and likeable person and I felt fully immersed in the story alongside her. Having read the first two books I felt like I was back with an old friend. I hope there will be further books in this series.

Diamonds and Deception
By: Ellen Butler

This is the third book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery story. Although it is the third book in the series I think it is important to note that it can definitely function as a standalone. You could miss the earlier books and not be lost at all. I do recommend reading them all, just because each and everyone that I have read so far have been fantastic reads that I highly recommend. It contains all of my favorite elements in a mystery - drama, danger, action, suspense.
Katrina Cardinal is such a great character. She is multi-layered and helps to drive the plot a rate that had me not wanting to walk away from my book. She is a lawyer who is now a lobbyist in Washington D.C. This gives her all the qualities you would expect - especially for the lead character in a mystery series - she’s smart, independent and hard working. Her sister reaches out to her to help her with a friend. And this leads them both wondering what they have been pulled into as nothing is as they originally thought.
This book is absolutely fantastic. I love the characters and how fast paced the plot is. This mystery is definitely original. I cannot wait to read more from Karina Karina Cardinal. Definitely pick this book up!

Diamonds & Deception (Karina Cardinal Mystery #3) by Ellen Butler

Butler has done it again. Karina is at it again in this new book and Butler has rightfully outdone herself. This is a fantastic book and I can't wait for the next.

Karina, Rina, or K.C., is at it again with the trouble. She is following her sister down the rabbit hole, but it's her sister. Things aren't as they seem and Karina gets in trouble again. The quote I chose for Karina is: “No, don’t ‘Karina’ me. Listen, it’s not like I plan to be part of the raid. I’ll wait in the car. But I am coming with you. And if you do find her, I want to be there. I need to be there.”

Mike, FBI boyfriend, is once again out of town. When he gets another frantic call from Karina. This time he knows what's going on and can't be mad. The quote I chose for Mike is: “I can’t leave you alone for a second, can I? Between you and your sister, you’ve got disaster written all over.”

Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good crime and romance. Ellen is fantastic.

Another winner in the Karina Cardinal Series

It is great that this series just keeps getting better! I think why I love it so is the great mix of so many elements: mystery, action thriller, romance, and humor.

Karina at least doesn’t get into the scrapes she does here on her own - her sister Jillian is the one who gets her tangled up in this web of intrigue and whose actions get them deeper into further trouble. Which makes sense - it was good to see Karina grow a bit from her experiences in the last two books and not be so willing to jump into things impulsively- it is great natural character growth.

If you like the fun of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels, or the camaraderie of the “Scooby Gang” in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or just and a great read that you can't put down - pick up all of the Karina books! You won't regret it!

This is the third book in the Karina Cardinal Mysteries series. The books in this series can be read as standalones, but I recommend reading all the books to get a better understanding of the characters.
I enjoy the flow of the author’s writing, it’s easy to follow and moves the story along nicely. It’s easy to step into the world the author creates and live the mystery alongside the characters.
Karina and her sister, Jillian, join forces in this instalment which was a fresh dynamic to the series. Karina remains my favourite character in the series, strong independent and determined. Getting herself into trouble in her investigations seems to come so naturally to her and I love it.
The twists and turns are great, gripping you further and further as the story progresses. I was sad to be getting through the books as quickly as I was as the series quickly joined my favourites.

Diamonds and Deception is Book Three in the Karina Cardinal Mysteries Series. It is a cozy mystery with action, adventure, danger, mystery, suspense, secrets, lies, and a diamond heist. Karina again finds herself in the middle of a mystery when her sister calls her asking for help. Their friend has been accused of stealing some diamonds and Karina and her sister are determined to clear her name. As the two sisters delve into the case, they come face to face with criminal elements that would have been better off left alone. The tension and suspense escalate as the secrets and lies are revealed. The storyline is intriguing and really draws you in because it has been so well written and clearly well researched. The character of Karina is smart, strong, feisty, and determined. I look forward to reading Book Four.

I've been loving Ellen Butler's Karina Cardinal Mystery series of late and this was no exception. Diamonds & Deception can be read as a standalone, although of course there are certain details that benefit from the context of the previous books. I love this series for its detailed intrigue and fast-paced action. The plotlines and antagonists are well-researched, even if this book has slightly darker themes compared to the previous ones. I really loved how this one focused on Karina as a lawyer, but also how her romance with Mike keeps growing and Karina's sense of humour made me laugh aloud many times. A suspenseful read.

This book follows the ongoing story of Karina – I seriously cannot get enough of this series! When Sadira (Karina’s sister Jillian’s friend) is set up to take the fall for a theft, Karina must pull out all the stops to find out why and who. But did she go too far? The last thing Karina wants to do is get Mike, her ex, involved – does she have a choice, and will he help? The characters were well written as were the scene descriptions. This is one of those books you cannot put down until the very end!

Another quick paced, compelling story from Ellen! This time, Katrina's sister Jillian attends a fashion show with Katrina when one of Jillian's co-workers is accused of stealing diamonds. On top of the diamond theft, Katrina ends up being thrown into something else even worse! This was a smoothly written book. Plenty of suspense and drama. And surprises along the way! Ellen knows how to dive in head first to write a good book!

Diamonds & Deception is the third installment in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series by Ellen Butler. The entire series is full of mystery, suspense, and romance. I have yet to be disappointed by this author. Karina always finds herself wrapped up in trouble, but each storyline is unique and pulls the reader in. Although each book can be read as stand alones, I highly recommend reading them in order. You'll love this author!

This book, just like the others by Ellen Butler, grabs your interest from the first chapter, never loosens its grip and holds you down to discover more in this mystery. This book leads you down unpredictable turns but so are the characters that lead down unexpected paths. All the different layers of this mystery will hold your attention for a great deal of time.

I have enjoyed this series since the first book. Karina is such an unusual blend of smart woman, foolish choices, and those choices seem to get more foolish book/adventure by book/adventure. By this, the third installment, some of them were (frankly) downright ridiculous. By rights, those choices should affect the overall credibility of the series, yet somehow they do not. I don't know how Butler pulls that off (frankly again), but she does - and with aplomb. Many of Karina's choices require a significant suspension of disbelief because they seem so utterly disregarding of personal safety. This is NOT a typical defining characteristic of the lobbyist-lawyer (which I know from personal experience). They are, however, choices that drive the action and adventure forward at ever-elevating levels - and perhaps it is because of that ramping-up effect that they wind up working over the course of the book even if they do occasionally cause eye-rolling while they're happening.

This time, KC has gotten embroiled in a mess of her sister's making, after her sister's friend and co-worker is charged with stealing diamonds from her employer. Of course this is Karina's world, so things are infinitely more complicated than that, and the resulting attempts at extricating her increasingly-involved sister Jillian involve more violence, lies, and crime than your average lobbyist-lawyer runs into on a daily (monthly? yearly? lifetime?) basis...

The details unfold through a series of red herrings, revelations that turn out to have hidden meaning, and increasingly dodgy judgment calls on the part of everyone involved. The action was delivered in an up-and-down pacing that worked well for the story, and the new characters (particularly Jillian) added an extra layer of depth to Karina's world.

I continue to enjoy these tales, even (particularly?) when they seem to jump over the line of sound decision-making. Perhaps it's Karina's disregard for her own safety and otherwise well-established law-abiding nature that nurtures that enjoyment, even as it occasionally tweaks at my eye muscles and sense of likelihood. She always manages to pull it all together in the end (albeit with a LOT of help from her "private security" and FBI friends) in a way that satisfies and ultimately, that's all a good story needs to do!

Thanks to the author for my obligation-free review copy.

I give Diamonds & Deception (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 3) by Ellen Butler, 5 stars.

This is one of those series where I forget just how good it is until I pick up the next book. I absolutely love Karina. She is fun, quirky, real, has a big heart and so likeable. I would love to have her as a best friend. This time, she tries to stay out of things but gets pulled in by her sister. You can't say no family. But she has learned from her past experiences. She asks for help from the guys at Silverthone Security. These guys are great too, I would love to see more about each of them -- maybe a book dedicated to them? Karina, her sister, and the security guys try to get to the bottom of things to find who is really guilty and just what is really going on.

Besides the characters, the story itself is so compelling. It begins when Katrina's sister Jillian attends a fashion show with her coworker. The night ends abruptly when the coworker is accused of stealing diamonds and arrested. Now they have to figure out if she is guilty, not to mention prove it. This would be enough for some mystery/suspense books. But wait, there's more! They later discover something even more sinister is going on and find themselves thrown right into it. There were a few times I thought the book may soon be over, only to realize there was much more to go. The the author switching gears on us and leading us in a different direction is done so smoothly and so effectively it kept me from putting the book down.

I highly recommend this series and book to those who like real, strong female characters in their whodunnit/suspense books.

Diamonds & Deception is the third book in Ellen Butler’s gripping Karina Cardinal Mystery series. We’ve had art theft, we’ve had assassination, and now we’re onto jewellery theft. Karina seems to get tangled up in everything!
Karina is a lobbyist whose past escapades have built her a network of talented, helpful people who are ready to leap into action when trouble comes. And trouble does always come. She’s resourceful, dedicated and doesn’t take no for an answer. There’s a brilliant scene where she can’t access her apartment as a man (who had the clever idea to get high on a weeknight) thinks there is a dragon in there. She’s tired, wants to go to bed, and so sets the imaginary dragon on him and walks through the door.
In this book we get to see a lot of Karina’s sister, Jillian. It’s good to see the supportive relationship between the sisters, how readily they come to each other’s aid. It is Jillian’s friend, Sadira, who is accused of stealing diamonds. What at first seems to be a simple misunderstanding escalates as the sisters learn more about Sadira and come up with more and more questions.
Diamonds & Deception is a real page-turner! It’s a great mystery, that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is an exciting series with plenty of variety and brilliant characters – I would recommend starting at the beginning with Isabella’s Painting to enjoy the story as it unfolds. For me, this is definitely a five star book!

Lawyer turned lobbyist Karina Cardinal has a knack for finding trouble. After her last adventure found her delving her skills at being a murder investigator and almost causing her own untimely demise, she has pinky swore to her FBI agent boyfriend, Mike, she will behave while he is away doing training. But alas, amateur sleuthing runs in the family, and when Karina’s sister Jillian finds herself trying to uncover who is behind framing a friend for a diamond heist, Karina becomes stuck in the middle of helping her sis and breaking her promise to Mike…

Never wanting to give too much away and spoiling the suspense, I always find writing reviews for mysteries difficult. In this third installment (which the author has written in a way to be read stand-alone) to the series, KC and her crew find themselves mixed up in an underworld of crime that is both terrifying and heartbreaking. Dear reader, I began Diamonds & Deceptions and found the story impossible to put down and consumed it within a day! After the last page turned, I was already hungry to read KC’s next adventure! Yes, I loved it that much! Highly recommend!

A great read about trouble. Karina Cardinal is trying to stay out of trouble after a row with her boyfriend. But life has other ideas when Sadira, a friend of her sisters, is accused of stealing a lot of diamonds from the jewellery sshe works at. Events unravel and Karina finds herself ina search for the truth. Can she uncover the truth?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns. Well developed characters like Karina cautious but still wanting to help or Jillian as loyal and determined. Great cast of supporting characters like the austere Bernard or the supportive Jessica.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like with the fashion catwalk at the start with bright and colourful dresses with sights and sounds as vivid it's as if you're actually there. Or the big house later on with the fairy lights and trees and flowers and the wide stairs for a sense of elegance and luxury and beauty. Wonderfully written.
I liked the use of suspense with Sadira and the diamonds with details revealed slowly to make you keep reading to find out the truth with Karina. Fast paced action and high stakes made for a captivating read. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

This is a great mystery story that keeps you gripped from page one.

Karina's middle name is trouble as she always seems to find herself caught in some form of trouble.

In this story she gets dragged into a situation with her sister Jillian and her friend Sadira. Sadira is spending money like ita going out of fashion. Her car is expensive, her wardrobe is full of designer clothes and shoes and her house is expensive.
Jillian wonders how she can afford to live this way on the teachers salary they earn and her wage from the jewellary store she works at.

One day Sadira calls into the store for her paycheck when she is accused of stealing some diamonds from the store. Sadira protests her innocence until her bag falls and a missing diamond lands at her feet.

Is she being set up or does this explain where all her money is coming from.

Karina and Jillian join forces with Silverthorne security to sort out this mess.
Who would want to set her up and why?

With links to the Russian Mob and gambling debts nothing is has it seems. Will Karina stay out of trouble or will she get dragged into trouble all over again.

Diamonds & Deception (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 3) by Ellen Butler

5 Stars

Another homerun for this author and this must read series. This author crept up on me back with Isabella’s Painting which is what got me hooked on her. This was an awesome addition to this series and Karina continues to be one of my favorite characters ever. I have also quickly fallen for the Silverthorne Security guys, I love everything about the interaction between them and Karina. Another series with them would not disappoint me in any way.

This story was just another Karina getting in the middle of a mess, thanks to her sister and at no fault of her own. She just seems to fall into these circumstances that draw her in and she can't seem to say no. I love her! Something else I really love about these books is the relationship between Mike and Karina… It's there, you know its there but its not the main focus, which makes these books refreshing to read.

I love this author and I highly recommend reading all of these in order so you can appreciate the many different aspects of this book.

Amazing!

Diamonds & Deception is the third book in Ellen Butler’s Karina Cardinal Mystery! You can read the story as a standalone but not having read the first two books you would miss out on knowing more about the recurring characters and backstories … Diamonds & Deception is a great story filled with drama, danger, action, suspense and sisterly ‘I’ve got your back no matter what’!
This time the writer has taken inspiration from the increasing gang activity and human trafficking. Karina’s sister Jillian calls her as her friend Sadira needs legal help and neither of them knows the direction that simple thing takes the! The two sisters get drawn down the rabbit hall and of course the trouble comes calling (as it is the case with Karina) and of course her FBI boyfriend Mike is out of town … so, who should Karina reach out for help? Silverthorne Security gang of course!
The writer takes us on one heck of a roller coaster ride and I have to say that I like her writing more and more with each of the story I read so I cannot wait for the next one in the series!

Karina is back and this time she has a few friends along. The romance that was budding with the FBI agent, Mike Finnigan, has ended and and she is living up the single life. True to style she gets herself into another scrape, but she is adamant that she will not be calling Mike to save her. She's no damsel in distress but she may not have a choice. A friend of sister Jillian has been dropping money that she shouldn't have on the salary of a teacher. After being accused of theft and having some loose diamonds fall out of her purse she sure does look guilty. It's now up to Karina, Jillian and Silverthorne Security to find out whonl set up Jillians friend. The only problem is they have dug too deep this time. She won't be able to pull herself out of this hole without help. Will Mike be willing to help her or is he still too upset over the break up? These books keep getting better as they go. I love the plots and how they characters have continued to develope with each book. I'm looking forward to the next adventure.

Diamonds & Deception
Karina Cardinal Mystery
Book 3
By Ellen Butler
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
This is book 3 in the Karina Cardinal series. This book could be read as a standalone, but why?

If you love a great mystery, you will love this story. When Sadira Manon is arrested for stealing diamonds, there are some questions that need answered. Like, why is a school teacher wearing high quality, name brand clothes on a teacher's salary? Where did she really get her money? Things are not looking favorable for Sadira. So it is time to call Karina, Jilly and
Silverthorne Security.

Ellen Butler has done it again! She has written this compelling mystery. Her writing is clear and fast paced. She gives just enough information to keep you intrigued and interested in this book. I love the characters set forth in this suspenseful mystery. I loved being able to follow this series and can't wait for more. Well done Ellen Butler! Well done!

Diamonds and Deception by Ellen Butler is book three of the Karina Cardinal Mystery series. This book has a little bit of everything. It’s got danger, mystery, suspense and so much more. This book can be read as a standalone but for the full experience - recurring character introductions and backstories - I encourage you to read the first two books.

Karina is fiercely independent and recently her friend Mike has taken their relationship from friendship to relationship and they seem to have hit a rough patch. Karina is determined not to call Mike for help however she seems to attract trouble. When her sister calls her to help a friend, this time doesn’t seem to be any different. Karina and Jillian find themselves deep in a mystery that leaves them with a lot of questions. Will Karina call Mike for help when trouble inevitably strikes?

This book was enjoyable to read. It has a pretty quick pace and let you wondering what was gong to happen. I recommend it!

Diamonds & Deception (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 3)

By: Ellen Butler

5 out of 5 stars

This is the next amazing book in a series I have loved from the first story. It had me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. Karina Cardinal is back. She finds herself helping out a friend of her sister, Jillian. She soon finds herself caught up in a mystery that she was not expecting. Read this book to find out the full story. This mystery will keep you guessing and turning pages. There are many characters in this story. Some of them are helpful to Karina, some have their own agenda and will do anything to make sure their plans succeed, and some make you wonder whose side they are on. The book pulled me into story and I didn't want to put it down. The author has done a wonderful job in making the characters come alive and the story unforgettable. I would highly recommend reading it.
