Covers the basic brush strokes, Bamboo, Chrysanthemum, Plum Blossom and Orchid in great detail with numerous examples, includes compositions to copy, you can churn out some nice art from these. Once you have mastered these brush strokes, you are ready for more advanced books on the subject. I lend it out to fellow students and refer to it myself and I have gone through two copies, the perfect binding of the softbound edition eventually fails.

Next best thing to a live class.

This book, and Sumi-E Just for You: Traditional One Brush Ink Painting by Hakuho Hirayama, are my favorite books on this subject. I've read both of them, but I continue to study each one.
