A demon hunter destined for greatness. A half-demon out to solve a mystery. And a tournament that threatens to take their lives…
Erin Everything at the academy has changed. A bloodthirsty new headmaster has taken over the school, and my friends and I are being forced to endure his relentless torment. Besides getting through my classes, I’ve got a huge burden on my shoulders. My father, King Brikan and lord over all demons, is rising in power. To defeat him and save the supernatural realm from the terrors of the underworld, I need to find my missing sisters… a task that’s proving impossible.
Rey I’ve never been freer in my life—and at the same time, never been more trapped. Erin and I have to be on our guard. Students are being attacked, and there’s a traitor in our midst. Even worse, Erin and I are both forced to enter a tournament due to our demon blood. All half-demons must prove they are worthy enough to attend the academy by enduring a deadly contest. One I’m not sure we’ll survive.
But nothing is what it seems, and the answers to all our mysteries are lurking in the shadows…
The fourth installment in Juliana Haygert’s amazing paranormal academy series, The Shadow Trials is an urban fantasy packed with demons, secret romance, and incredible battles. The series keeps on getting better and better!
While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting—but equally gratifying—life of a wife, mother, and author. She resides in North Carolina and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy.

This series just keeps getting better and better with each instalment and this The fourth instalment in this amazing paranormal academy series is just awesome! This urban fantasy is packed with demons, secret romance, and incredible battles and will have you on the edge of your seat the whole read! I love Erin and Rey and watching their relationship grow and develop, love the twists and turns, the chaos , the mystery , if you haven’t started this series yet then what are you waiting for??
From the Pleasures of joint summer vacationing...To the depths of a dark Hell. Erin and Rey spent weeks of relaxed time together with infrequent time with her now unemployed and former Blackthorn Academy Professor Mother, and the Good Times seemed to Good to Last.
Too soon Rey had to return by himself as a Professor, and Erin's Mother drove her back and left her to walk back to her Dorm since she was banned from the property herself. Clair and all her friends were there to greet her arrival, only to be interrupted by an emergency meeting by the new headmaster in the middle of the frozen courtyard, "Professor Crimson." He announced new security rules and introduced two new and strange Professors to the Staff and Students. Erin's and Rey's search for her two marked Sisters finally brought results, if not what they expected.
Attacks, Deaths, and mysteries along with a lot of sneaking around leads to a shocking advancement of the Shadow Trials Timeline for the Half-Blood Students. Shocking, Intriguing, and Spell Bounding mixed in with a lot of anticipation follows this book to a cliffhanger that you keep clicking the Kindle Page Advancement to get to. But you soon realize that you just have to wait to see Erin's Father, (Brikan, get what he deserves!)
Erin and Rey finally found the way to each other and are together, but the situation at the academy is more than dire. Under Headmaster Crimson, the conditions and regime resemble prison, not a school. Moreover, the shadow trials are coming up. They try to also find the other Demon Kissed Queens or a mysterious witch, but both tasks are proving challenging... yeah, this semester is a hell. While the change in Erin and Rey' relationship is very welcome, the tension coming out of their infuriating interactions before now transformed into the pressures and challenges in the outer world, and multiplied tenfold. The drama at the school kept me tensed all the time, wishing there would be a nice solution to all problems, but with this scale of trouble, the chances are less than low. However, I really like how the characters start to crystallize and mature into smart, experienced hunters with open minds. As for the cliffhanger, I am really curious now how they would find the way out of the trap...
Juliana Haygert is one heck of a talented author. I loved her Rite of the Warlock and Rite of the Vampire series and fully expected to enjoy her latest Rite World, Blackthorn Hunters Academy. Well, having now eaten up it’s first four books - including an epic binge read of The Soul Bond (Book 3) and The Shadow Trials (Book 4), all I can say is that it’s exceeded my already high expectations. Frankly, if I don’t give away specific plot details, my review of both books is one that applies to the series (so far) as a whole. Perfect fun that’s perfectly written, with a perfectly great plot, a perfect cast from Erin and Rey on down, and perfect world-building. These books, with their demons, dark magic, secret romance, action, adventure and incredible battles truly are perfect urban fantasy. And yes if asked if I’d recommend these two books (or the series itself), I’d have to say that I am - perfectly (c’mon, you expected that) happy to do so.
Once again I have been reeled in to the continuing story of Rey and Erin and by the end I just want to strangle someone.
This picks up were book 3 left of Crimson is Headmaster and a complete sleaze he has made some not so welcome changes to the Academy. Rey and Erin are finally able to be together until school starts. The Shadow Trials is still going to happen and trust me Crimson is totally twisted with it. And then a mysterious guest shows up and it all falls apart. This is a good edition to the storyline even if I don't like the ending but its still a zinger of a cliffhanger. The story started out a little slow for me but once everyone was back at the Academy there was plenty of mystery and mayhem.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
If you haven't started reading this series, What are you waiting for? If you were waiting for the next installment IT IS HERE! Brilliantly done, Juliana takes us on a wonderful journey... well it is more like a spellbinding journey. She has taken this world and made it more than just a work of fiction! I feel as though I'm in the world she has created. Great job from beginning to end. The only reason I'm upset is that I have to wait for the next book. Immerse yourself in a brand new world and meet some wonderful (and not so wonderful) characters.
I voluntarily review an ARC. This is the fourth part of the Blackthorn Hunters Academy series, the books should be read in order. Once again I loved the action, the dire situations, friendships, the supernaturals. At some points the writing style wasn't as fluently as I'm used to, but the exciting events made up for that. I missed a bit romance, this part of the series is a bit more about heat. Nonetheless I absolutely recommend this series.
Another fantastic story! Things are heating up.....Now that Erin and Rey are together, things are not getting any better. While they got a short time to let their love flourish, heading back to the academy will be anything but easy! Continue the journey with Erin and Rey, one that will bring about chaos, heartbreak and a lot more!
After Randell was kicked out as headmaster and Crimson were given the position you knew that those games were still going ahead. You knew he was sneaky and would lie his way to what he wants. When he told Rey that when he becomes headmaster he would stop the games. None of us believed him. We all knew it was going to be bigger and more dangerous the moment he said that he was going to be structuring them himself.
How will they survive?
Even Rey, not yet outed as a half-demon, will have to participate in these "adventures".
At least in the romance department the two, Erin and Rey, have finally accepted the fates and have been honest with one another. Even though the soulbond has been destroyed it didn't mean their feelings would go away as well. Even if it means that they have to date in secrete. With Erin's mum, the professor has been outed for teaching Erin very dark magic. The need for Erin and Rey, and the entire group of friends to stick together is a priority.
Hogwarts was never this dangerous and Erin is feeling the pressure of being a demonic princess. So much prejudice about supernaturals and little understanding that demon hunters can be just as evil including headmasters in particular. Academy life is dangerous for Erin and the other half demons but the worst is yet to come. The story was fast paced and so glad that Rey and Erin have finally resolved their feelings for each other. There is still plenty of teenage angst to go around. My question is where is the King of Hell and why is he waiting so long to attack Erin? How are all these demons getting into the school if it is supposed to be protected?
I loved the mix of danger, secrets, and power. The main character’s strength and determination really stood out, especially as she faced so many trials that tested her in every way. It had just the right balance of magic, tension, and emotion. I couldn’t stop reading every chapter made me want more.
The author keeps the series interesting with different stiriesthat work well together. Anxious to read the next book to see how Erin gets her boyfriend back and how it all works out for her friends and "family".
Another good instalment in this supernatural series! So many plot twists and turns I did not see coming!! Keeping me on the edge of my seat!! Can’t wait for the final book in this series!
Just wow. The shadow trials were not how I expected them to be. I cant wait to see how they all come together and save Rey. On to the next book. Love this series.
So far this series has been a good read each book build and brings in new challenges to the main characters. So excited to listen in on the next in the series.
I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see what will happen next for them. Now Rey is in the underworld and Erin and the queen kissed will have to go to the underworld and destroy the demon king.
Interesting and characters are intriguing. The storylines are different from other paranormal stories.I did enjoy the writing and characters that interesting
***I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*** Being a half-demon is dangerous. Now more than ever, especially for Erin. Trying to figure out how to escape her demonic heritage couldn’t be harder. Erin survives several dangerous situations and unravels dark secrets and Magic that shows her more than before not everything is as it seems, or as everyone thinks. Rey has to protect Erin even if he has too push her away but they keep getting pushed together. Erin and Rey are in a much different spot than the last book. Rey is now there for Erin and not trying to deny their attraction to each other. Of course we are learning more about Erin's father! That ending left me hurting for both Rey and Erin.
