Victoria’s dreams of a cozy life as a small-town doctor come crashing down when the monstrous Kryptids make first contact. The alien invaders have only one goal: to turn Earth into a breeding ground. As she fights to protect her patients in their makeshift hospital, an even more fearsome alien and his beast enter the fray. She should be terrified of the male ominously named Doom. But she’s mesmerized.
As a genetically engineered war machine, Doom lives for a single purpose: eradicating the Kryptids. Coming to Earth with his brothers to save the humans should be a straightforward matter. But years of bloody battles throughout the galaxy have not prepared him for the fiery Victoria. Enchanted by the courage of that wisp of a woman, Doom offers her his protection and that of his fearless war beast, Stran, as she attempts to rescue other wounded humans. After disaster strikes their homeworld, the Xian Warriors now also face extinction.
Will the Kryptids finally defeat their only real threat, or will the delicate human that has stolen both of Doom’s hearts also be the Warriors’ seed of hope?
USA Today bestselling author Regine Abel is a fantasy, paranormal, and sci-fi junkie. Anything with a bit of magic, a touch of the unusual, and a lot of romance will have her jumping for joy. She loves writing hot alien warriors meeting no-nonsense, kick-ass heroines. Her novels are steamy, action-packed, and with the twists and turns you never saw coming.
Before devoting herself as a full-time writer, Regine had surrendered to her other passions: music and video games! After a decade working as a Sound Engineer in movie dubbing and live concerts, Regine became a professional Game Designer and Creative Director, a career that has led her from her home in Canada to the US and various countries in Europe and Asia.
I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t finish it. Chapter 4 was as far as I could go without throwing my iPad across the room.
The h didn’t even ask how the aliens are able to speak and understand English. Didn’t even interrogate them more about their intention after saving humans. You know, ask questions like a normal person who’ve seen first hand what an alien invasion is like. No, she sees a group of golden alien and distrust them like for 2 seconds and then they are all best friends. I don’t care if they just saved you from being a breeder for bug babies! No, instead, she’s checking him out and curious whether he’s male or female caz his male parts aren’t showing like a human male. NO! You ask hard questions. You distrust like your fucking life depends on it.
And don’t get me started on how Doom found his “one” on an alien planet. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Yet he found his mate. This story had other issues I do not have the energy to get into. This story was a far cry from realistic.

3.5 stars. I checked this author other books after I was hooked with I married a Lizardman! 😂😘 And I’m hooked with this series too 😬😍.
This book, is the 3rd book published in the series but in terms of the storyline it should be book #1. After reading book #1 and #2, I can understand why readers wanted to know Raven’s mum and dad’s story. It’s slightly light compared with Legions and Ravens but still an entertaining read.
Before become a full time writer, this author was working in video games industry and she used to be a Game Designer and Creative Director and Sounds Engineer too.
It’s obvious from this series how her experiences influence the story heavily. If you love Stars Wars, Video Games, or Japanese animé telly series, you would love this series too. I do, I’m one of those who couldn’t stop her little brother watching this animé on telly, two decades before it was popular in Europe and North America! 😬😘😍❤️.
DNF at 38% Read better too many times - Insect-like aliens that attach Earth in need of food and breeders - Mighty alien warriors that come to save Earth that look like - well, you have seen the cover, and have spectacular buns. -Heroine that suppose to be so smart and plucky she practically sweats unicorns and develops damp underwear if not at first that at second glance - "Mine " from him within 5 seconds -Aardvark /Sonic Hedgehog side kick ( I actually liked this one, but I am a sucker for space pets)
Sorry - some readers will like it, but, I felt like I was bleeding brain sells with every page and I value them too much , specially as you get older you can't afford to loose many ( brain sells , not pages).
I originally read this story as part of the PISA (I feel like I should throw an extra "anthology" in there to make things clear but the PISAnthology anthology sounds too funny. HAHA. Yes, I make myself laugh.) and I loooooved going back to the beginning and seeing how things started between the Xian Warriors and their humans. Sure, sure, it's bloody and brutal and some very bad things happen, but it was fun/illuminating to see the first Xian Warrior meet his soulmate.
(On the downside, the abduction of the early soulcatchers which leads to the births of some of the later half-breed heroes is...pretty darn heartbreaking. While something good ultimately came out of it, it is hard knowing what's in store for those women.)
So. Doom and Victoria. He's the first of the warriors to find his special someone (but not the last!) and it happens at a kinda weirdly inconvenient time. Inconvenient because as a species that hasn't had much contact with aliens, the humans aren't aware of all the perks that come with being a Xian Warrior and Victoria has to go through some intense heartache before the truth is revealed.
On the plus side, Earth is saved (with some heavy damage taken, but still!), the Xian Warriors begin their long standing relationship with their human soulcatchers, and a new generation has begun (that part takes a while). The war against the General might just be starting (for the humans, at least), but the pieces are being put in place to end his tyranny in the future.
3.5 stars This book delivered on the world building but fell a bit short on the romance. Everything was intense and dark with end of the world shit going on. Victoria was a doc, which I’m always a bit of a sucker for, and didn’t have any issues falling fast for Doom. Just wanted more of them together
Spice: 2/5
Triggers: war, violence, gore, death, dismemberment, references to being eaten by bugs, apocalyptic conditions, gun violence, threat of forced breeding, grief, pregnancy, birth, soul death
I listened to the audiobook in preparation for the graphic novel I got from RARE. I’ve read quite a few alien romances and this one fits nicely in the category. I enjoyed the aliens coming to save Earth, the romance was cute and the world building was interesting.
Doom is there to save Victoria when she needs him. They have a connection like fated mates.
Alien meets human. Alien knows she’s the one. Human takes a bit of time to get on the same page.
This book was everything I expected, no more, no less.
All the feels!! I fell in love with this series when I first met Legion and the Xian warriors - be still my beating heart When I heard we were going to get to see how it all started I was ecstatic! I'm not joking I couldn't wait to get Doom's story. To be there when it all began. I'm so happy Abel gave this to her readers - She did not disappoint.
The storyline captivated me from the opening scene and easily swept me up into the action and romance. I felt a part of their battle, a part of their ragtag team of warriors and psychics and soul catchers The world-building is so vivid I was there.
This opens with the Kryptids invading the earth. How and why they rounded up the humans. What the general was really up to. The attack on the Xian Warriors homeworld.... So many answers
Victoria is a breath of fresh air. She is strong-willed but soft of heart. Her aura was perfectly balanced. Not too tough, not too soft. She was believable. And Doom? Sheer perfection Stran - where can I get one?
The rest of the Xian Warriors - I look forward to the journey
Loved the worldbuilding but the romance is too insta-love for my taste. There’s a lot of leeway I’m willing to give SFR books because I know that suspension of disbelief is key. However, instalove requires a solid chemistry to carry it through and it just fell flat.
Now, the XIan Warriors, the war with the Kryptids, all of that worked for me and I wish that the story wasn’t so rushed. Towards the end it felt as if there was too much that was told to the reader because it’s packed in instead of unfolding organically. Now I’m a “gotta try it three times” kind of gal, so I’m not writing this series off just yet because I like Ms Abel’s worldbuilding enough to hope the romance gets stronger the longer this goes on. We’ll see how it goes.
Victoria is a doctor in a small town when a kryptid invasion occurs. The kryptids only want to turn earth into a breeding ground. Victoria fights to protect her patients in the clinic. Doom is a warrior genetically engineered to fight the kryptids. After having their planet destroyed by the kryptids the Xian warriors work to protect earth from them. Can Victoria and Doom be the hope for their people to survive? An outstanding read and series.
I picked up this book after reading the author's new paranormal series and I was pleasantly surprised with the worldbuilding and originality in both the alien species. I was not impressed with the insta-love between the MCs. The general plot though is enough to compell me to pick up the next book and find out what happens next.
This book lacked a good editor from start to finish. I simply don’t like her writing style, the author always stays superficial and keeps a distance. There is talent there but it is never really explored. It is the same with every book I read by this author. And I am never Interested in reading more of a series after the first book. And after reading a couple of SJ Sanders books beforehand, this one doesn’t come close although it has all the right ingredients.
This book is packed with unique and old ideas. Occasionally great ones. But the execution, mainly the writing style needs major improvement. The author seemed to struggle to put the story of Victoria and Doom in between the world building and overall plot of the series she already planned.
Because of the lack of actual conversations, and I mean realistic ones and with a normal length, that go back and forth, that really carry a topic and different opinions, we never get to know the characters. Don’t get me wrong there are conversations, but short ones and they are strategically placed to serve a purpose not to just let the characters be. For example, one morning she wakes up and out of the blue she expresses jealousy and insecurity, all in her head. I can relate to that, especially in her situation. But the author resolved that whole incident in a matter of one page, by an unrealistic one sided talk between Victoria and Doom. Life and especially emotions don’t work like that. But the author is already on to the next topic.
This writing style lets the characters remain distant and clinical. That is not how you present and build a character or even resolve emotional struggles to adapt to new situations. There was no development.
Because the author tells or retells everything that happens, the reader is not part of the story. I don’t participate in their struggles or feel their emotions. It all remains again distant and lessens the whole reading experience. There is no day to day life. The author jumps from one plot thread to the other. From one time jump to the other. The plot threads are not connected properly and the overall plot is missing. There is no purpose, no goal or achievement for the main character that carries them through the story. That is also what I missed and left me bereft at the end. Wondering why I read that story. That all would work in a lengthy novel but not in a short sci-fi romance. It robs the book of its substance. They meet for one day, get to know each other a tiny bit, and are separated for three months afterwards. What grant emotions do you expect that don’t make this whole one day soulmate affair look ridiculous?? Exactly, and the author does rob us of that because she didn’t present a better get to know each other maybe two or three days longer. Build emotions and intimacy. Develop a bonding through experiences and tasks by working together. To make it more believable and give us some emotions while they are separated. And while the author chose only a handful of situations she wanted us to show in detail the rest in between round about 7 years is summarised and retold. Which again makes not a great reading experience.
I...I only finished this because it became a WTF, Are You Kidding Me?, JFC! And not in a hahahaha, let's make it a drinking game. This book was a hysterical bingo card of just about every romance subgenre/trope:
But hey, the cover is decent. '22 edit: Regine Abel has a different series, Prime Mating Agency, which is tots awesome and worth reading. (And still has lots of alien smexy times.)
November 2021 - re-read I was in the mood for some sci-fi romance again. My original review still stands, but I upgrade the rating to 3 stars. As the more I read of Regine Abel, the more I don't mind the writing style it's still different, not bad just something you have to get used to, because of the difference.
October 2020 What to expect from a book with the Title Doom...?
A lot obviously. The story was not exactly unique but clearly fascinating. The destruction of earth by intelligent space-faring alien bugs/beetles that capture humans (as food for more bugs)...it sure as hell sounds fascinating. (Star Ship Troopers anyone...?) Add the golden scales wearing humanoid aliens that come to Earths help...and it gets better. Plus some romance and I was sold.
While reading the book, I found a weird writing style that was more like a re-telling than actual showing of the things that were happening. All in all the book didn't have much dialogue - it was quite verbose as most parts were described in that weird re-telling style. In parts it felt like reading (not watching) a documentary with acted parts.
I discovered, that I'd read another book by this author before, but with the same strange style. Nevertheless, as I like Sci-Fi Romance, I continued reading and in the end I wanted to know how the overall story arc of the Xian Warriors/Earthers vs. Kryptids continued.
That's not to say that I didn't struggle with the writing style. I had a hard time with it in this book.
Doom had a lot of the classic mistake we heard about in creative writing class "telling" not "showing". However, the world this author created was interesting enough that I would read more of but would not necessarily remember a day later.
Después de leerme la saga de la agencia primaria he seguido con esta en la que hay más sexo con aliens, me encanta la forma en la que la autora mete romántica en esta cifi soft.
The final book in the Xian Warrior series by Regine Abel was released so now's the best time to read the series, right?
This was an OK series starter. I was promised there's a good overarching plot but I'll be honest that it doesn't sound like there was much of a start of a one here. Like if I didn't know this was a series, I would have 100% thought this was the end and that was it, no further questions or mysteries to be solved. I actually went back to look at the blurbs in the next books to see what they could even be about.
I enjoyed the first part of the book where we're following Victoria recount the first days and weeks of the alien invasion by the Kryptids and then the sudden arrival of the Xian Warriors. The on the ground battles and realities of the alien invasion, complete with post-apocalyptic like supply runs and makeshift clinics and the like, was an engaging read. Once we see the Xian Warriors start to take on the Kryptids and lend hope to the humans that not all is lost, that was also enjoyable.
Where it started to lose me was the big time skips. I can't really talk about it without divulging stuff so basically everything is being stuffed under a spoiler tag.
I don't know, man. Maybe Regine Abel was just antsy to get to the rest of the plot stuff she wanted to cover in the rest of the series and was a little over eager on getting there. I'm hoping the rest of the series doesn't hold this pattern and we get to actually read about what's happening, not a summary of past events.
Excellent! A very exciting introduction to the Xian Warriors who fought to keep the Kryptids from overtaking earth. The battles with the invaders seem relentless. Victoria, with her need to help whomever she can, soon runs into Doom and his team. I adore Doom’s companion, a Creckel named Stran. He’s an amazing, intelligent being who makes sure Victoria stays safe while Doom battles Kryptids. This is such an exciting story - edge of your seat action throughout! I love learning about the early years, and the Xian interactions with human women. Particularly learning about Victoria and Doom. What a satisfying love story! It was far more dangerous for Xian Warriors during that time period, when they were just learning of the skills earth women could contribute to the war against the Kryptids. Even if you’ve already read the books that follow, you won’t want to miss this story. It’s well-balanced between thrilling, deadly encounters with Kryptids, the struggles for survival for Xians (and their support crew), and romance at its best. Awesome storytelling!
3.5 stars. This was good. And I really enjoyed it, but you could definitely tell it was mostly just a prequel novel. There was more focus on world building and explanations than there was on the relationship between Doom and Victoria. But, still. It was a good time. I did really enjoy getting to know them, and I loved the warriors being so excited at the end, and Stran was a cool addition.
Also. I always love that she includes illustrations of the aliens at the end so we can see if our imagination was right. Mine rarely is but it’s still fun.😂
This is a great story! A romance in space between a human doctor and an alien warrior, what more could you want?! There’s always nasties, in this case alien full size bugs. Ick! But the warriors fighting for their lives and each other, find another goal - love. Recommend.
3.95(only not a 4 bc I felt the pacing was rushed and some scenes were like totally not needed, like they were fine but I would be ok with living without them)
Wow !!! I 1st read this book as part of the " Pets in Space " works of art . But ,this book is like 1000 times the action and the myriad of emotions that I went through reading it !!!
This book is actually the 1st book of the XIAN WARRIORS series, when the Kryptids come to invade Earth and the WARRIORS come to stop them . Doom and his brothers are the " peacekeepers " of the Galaxy, and go where needed. The Kryptid invasion has lead them to Earth, and Doom in particular is extremely happy after having met Nurse Victoria. He is happy because his " mating glands " have activated . He has met his soul- mate !! The war and machinations of the Krypids are horrible , in that they are Bugs ( number 1 ) and that they want to take over the world ( number 2 ) . And that the bugs are beyond gross and disgusting doesn't help !! The action scenes are magnificent , and the horrible decisions that have to be made are heart breaking . But , somehow , Ms Abel makes it all happen. What an exciting , excellent start to the XIAN WARRIORS series !!! ❤❤❤ Now I HAVE to re-read the next book !!!! Thanks REGINE ABEL for another amazing story 💋💋💋
I love a story that starts with the end of the world as we know it, but then add bad but aliens that eat people and then good aliens that live to smash the people eating ones and I am hooked! On top of all that, it has many strong characters, but Doom and Victoria are amazing together, both alpha types that get schiznit done! There are some parts that were a little wordy to me, but the exposition is tuff to throw into an action-packed book, so it did help the understanding of the motivations. I swear this book should be a movie, it was that good!
OMG!! Since I started reading the Xian Warriors series I have always been curious of how all this Kryptids invasion begin and how Doom and Victoria met as while. And I'm happy that we finally have their story it was good to know how their romance started and all the difficult moments they have to face to save humanity and Xian warriors.
