Early morning, in a quiet seaside village, the peace is shattered by two gunshots. An elderly woman and her son are shot dead, apparently by a local resident - a wife and mother, whose sister disappeared as a teenager.
Alternating timelines, from 1994 when 16 year old Flora rebels and goes missing, leaving her younger sister Heather and Heather’s friend Jess, to the current, when Jess is a reporter, sent to cover the story of the double shooting where Heather is prime and only suspect.
Told from the varying points of view of Jess, Heather, and Margot (Flora and Heather’s mother), everyone’s past is uncovered, secrets held and discoveries made.
As with this genre, there are a lot of twists, so much so that I was a bit over it by the end, even though it was cleverly done. But it kept my interest enough, and I would consider any other works by this author.
