I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I still live there as well as in Dublin, Ireland. I've been a soldier, freelance journalist, tended bar, sold designer cakes, owned a painting and decorating company along with a number of other schemes and scams. If that doesn't offend you I also play bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. All my books stand alone, read them in whatever order you wish. They are filled with the sort of oddballs we are all curious about, but wisely, prefer to keep at a distance. None of my characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to take over the government. Rather, they inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society, characters with one foot on either side of the law. The circumstances they find themselves in are usually due to bad decisions, but bad decisions lead to interesting stories. They serve not so much as an example but as a warning to us all. Thanks for taking the time, happy reading.
Trying to decide on my favorite Dev Haskell book out of the 20 gems would be like trying to decide which of my three kids I like best. That said, this one's a beaut. What a funny, witty, character driven yet plot driven wonder of a book! The only one who could ever get out of a situation, is Dev. He tries to get ahead of his friend Heidi's foisting a female time bomb on him, he even gets the wonderful Lucious to help. But in the end, his discomfort is the reader's great gain. So I'll answer the question. Guest From Hell is my favorite right now, until the next book comes along. As to my kids, love you all!
Dev Haskell agrees to help a friend of his go-to girl Heidi, he ends up in a case involving a federal investigation of a bank doing shady loans, and two mobs. When her house burns to the ground, she comes to stay at Dev's. Add in a fog trainer for Morton, and you've got Guest From Hell. Can Dev save the day, and himself? Read it, and find out. You'll be glad you did!
In this installment in the series, Dev's friend Heidi asks him to look into a childhood friend's situation and so Dev tries to discover how Roxy is on the hook for a million dollar mansion. That leads to house fires, shootings and all kinds of craziness in Dev's life. Another great installment in the series.
Another good Dev Haskell "mystery." Ladies beware, this is very masculine, but funny, easy, and entertaining. Characterization is great. I docked a star because it was good but not immaculate. Good read!
A riotous, rip-roaring romp that has Dev in the cross-hairs between the mob and Tubby Gustafson - and that's not a good place to be. Mike Faricy just can't miss with his characters and his stories. Always a delight, always exciting, always perfectly created. Highly Recommended.
Great light reading. As ever a fun read with well-meaning, somewhat inept/naive PI Dev Haskel. A great series to turn to for some light-hearted entertainment, always worth a read.
This was little bit of a change for Dev actually. Trying to save somebody that had no care in the world as to what or who she was doing but still a very good read from Mike.
"When this old world starts getting you down…" grab the next book in the Dev Haskell - Private Investigator series and settle in for an evening or two of chicks, crooks, and chaos. GUEST FROM HELL was the 20th book in the series (until some boxsets became integrated into the series list). Now, it's book 23 (if you're keeping track.)
With each story, Dev becomes less and less the hard-drinking, womanizing PI and more responsible citizen. He still shares an office with Louie Laufen and has a brew or two with Louie at The Spot. Louie offers more legal advice during his chats with Dev. The thing that hasn't changed is the humor that surrounds the bizarre circumstances in which Dev finds himself.
GUEST FROM HELL is not the first time Dev has found himself rooming with a crazy person, but I have the sneaking suspicion it may be the last. He may also think twice (or maybe three times) before helping his main squeeze, Heidi Bauer, when she flatters him into submission.
There is no doubt that I will read all the Dev Haskell books, especially with the state of the world today. The need to escape is ever present, and Devlin Haskell provides the perfect getaway.
A friend of Dev's who was a private detective ask him to help one of her friends. Roxy being the one needing help, turned into be the guest from hell for Dev all the way around. She just would not leave him alone. Always there and doing as she does. He finally got to the point she needed to go ASAP. Luckily neighbors called the police one early morning because of loud noises in Dev's house. Turned out Roxy had over 30 people in his house when he got home. Drunk, dancing on the sofa nude among other things. Dev finally got rid of her for awhile anyhow. The threw out the people and Roxy kicked a cop so she went to jail for two charges against her. Finally she was gone.
The title is certainly accurate. A school chum of Heidi's is in trouble and being threatened with evictions by a couple of goons. Dev unwillingly ends up with her as a house guest, as he tries to straighten it out. Also, a neighbor of Dev's asks him to try and locate a sister she hasn't seen in years. We have our usual cast of characters to provide the danger and humor we always get with Dev Haskell.
Dev is in hot water once again, with Heidi he is wondering why she is so nice that evening . Even to her suggesting going to The Spot for a drink, a place he was never to mention, and to take a shower after because of the germs. He should of known, when she mentions a friend of hers needs help, big time help. The fun begins, disasters happen, and we love another caper of Dev’s.
Another entertaining storyline in the Dev Haskell series! Found this installment very entertaining, great characters and humor is outstanding. Dev is helping out a friend of a friend, who is about to get evicted from her house and now the fun begins!
