Jasper Johnson played with fire and is still trying to sift through the charred ruins of his life. When his sister-in-law suggests he disappears for a while to put himself back together, Jasper jumps at the opportunity. The sweet, beautiful, tropical island of Antigua provides the perfect backdrop for the healing he needs but he is not prepared for Reign. Reign Thomas is battling demons of her own but she holds them at bay by keeping herself painfully busy. When Jasper walks into her bar on a rainy evening, Reign could hardly imagine he would make her want to slow down. Jasper and Reign soon find that there can be no future unless you conquer the pain of your past. And, sometimes, the sweetest escape can be found in the person wrapped in your arms.
Rilzy Adams needs only five things to survive: sushi, coffee, Prosecco, cuddles and words (though not in that order).
She's a lawyer by day - writer by 'whenever she can get the free time' and believes that love makes the world go 'round. It is no small wonder, then, that she can't help but pen tales of people falling in love.
Have you ever made a decision that was so bad you wanted to run away? So bad it made you desperate enough to want to escape to the other side of the world? Yeah, me too.
The Sweetest Escape is the the fifth and final book of the Falling Like a Johnson series (I can’t believe its over) and it follows Jasper Johnson. Jasper made a decision that started to eat at his life in every area. This decision led to him getting fired and escaping to the beautiful island of Antigua. He made plans to sort out his life, create new memories, and leave all the chaos of his life behind him.
While on the Island, Jasper meets Reign Thomas, a local teacher and part- time bartender. Reign is no stranger to heartbreak. She is fighting battles of her own while keeping busy to mask the pain of her past. Reign and Jasper forged a friendship during both of their pain and loss that eventually led to them becoming lovers.
I felt this book in my spirit. I read this book very quickly partly because I’ve been invested from book one, but also because the characters were so relatable. I felt that I was a part of this story...like this was my life and I was trying to navigate through the horrible decisions that I made. I felt hurt, shame, anger, hope, fear, regret and joy all in this book. When Jasper made more stupid decisions I shouted at him calling him crazy. When Reign couldn’t let the past go, I felt her hesitation.I was that embedded in this story. I wanted this couple to win, to come out on the other side of rock bottom.
This book shed light on how easy it is to make a decision without thinking about the consequences and how they can affect our life. It shows us how pain, loss, shame, and guilt can cripple us and deter us from moving forward and living a happy and healthy life. It shows us how our decisions affect others in our lives when when we think it doesn’t. It shows us how important accountability and acceptance is when it comes to healing and moving on.The books also shows us that there is passion, bliss, and redemption after mistakes, pain, and loss.
I am sad to see this series end. The author effectively told Jasper's story and completed an amazing series in this book. The suspense, shock factor, and unexpected revelations kept me on the edge of my seat wanting so much more. I will forever be a fan of the Johnsons.

First of all, it’s a bit odd for me to five this book 3.5-4 stars given that I spent most (or let’s be honest ALL) of this book annoyed with the hero. He is beyond wimpy and lacking in agency and common sense and it’s crazy because he is wealthy, extremely educated, urbane, so the entire book you’re wondering what on earth is going on in his head.
The premise is that after years of Jasper cheating with his family friend’s wife, the affair has come out and it has sent Jasper spiraling especially after finding out that fellow love rat, Mazalee, never had any intentions of leaving her marriage or other side dudes, despite being pregnant and allegedly uncertain of the father. To escape the dramatic fall out, Jasper escapes for Antigua to sort his mental state out. There he meets pre-school teacher cum bartender Reign, who is still recovering from her own devastating heartbreak and isn’t in the place either to be starting something. But sparks fly and they seem to have a role in each other’s healing until Mazalee pulls the strings again and Jasper is conflicted.
From the premise, hopefully you can tell why I was salty. For many romance readers, cheating is a hard pass. Here the cheating is done pre- knowing the heroine but you know from the beginning that the hero is an “ain’t ish” dude for cheating (FOR 3 years!!!) with his friend’s wife. You also know that he is naive and ripe for being used and taken advantage of. Reign is definitely more patient and understanding than I would have been but even she at a point must use the sense her mother gave her. I think what makes this book so good is that I spent the entire book annoyed but I never wanted to stop reading it, and it never devolved to a “hate read.” I just couldn’t stop shaking my head at how incredibly stupid Jasper was. I don’t think this will be for everyone. But it is very dramatic and I think it was really interesting. And I’m obsessed with this writer and this series.
Yeah! Everything JT said Jasper was or every comment he made that sounded rude, he was RIGHT all along. Listen Jasper could be summed up in one word - chaotic. For the most part I'm just like what does he actually want out of life. Mazalee - another chaotic character but she's just a piece of work like I wanted to heat her up more than Jasmine or Reign. Jasmine definitely coddled Jasper way too much, we get it that's your twin but sister punch him or something.
Jasper was an idiot and he hit below the belt, I felt for Reign because she really have herself to him, she let go of the pain of losing Damien and pictured a picture with Jasper but acted up on her. I'm beefing with him fr
Reign towards the end was giving "I'm a strong, black woman and I can stand by your stand and remain unshaken" - it just wasn't quite giving for me.
I enjoyed this book. The characters were likable and there was a touch of everything: drama, humour, suspense. There were also some touching moments that made me cry. I read this book in two days and it really kept my interest.
Since I'm from the Caribbean I really appreciated the Caribbean context where I could relate to the soca songs being mentioned and the style of dance. It's always great to read about characters that you could relate to.
I appreciated the plot twists the author introduced to create more suspense in the storyline even though I felt some things were a bit far fetched in how convenient they were wrapped up. Overall, I was happy with the ending.
the way I’m so grateful to only have one book left in the series, God make it stop!!!
Let’s be honest here, I strongly disliked this book. If it hadn’t been for Nona’s little tidbit at the end and for reign, I would have given this one star. I’ve read all the books in the series up until this point and would give the series an over 3 stars. I’ve been struggling through because once I start something, I can’t quit, but DAMN I’ve wanted to quit. The writing is not exciting, there’s no differentiation between the FMC talking about how she loves the MMC and no differentiation between the MMC talking about his love for the FMC. What I mean by that is, yes some men are deep but they think and speak differently than women and it doesn’t feel that way through the narration of his thoughts vs. hers. Maybe in the dialogue itself but, the narration is most of the book, so that annoyed me.
Lemme just say I HATE Jasper, I’ve never read a more weak, insipid, annoying, illogical character in my life… Him going back to Mazalee after saying all that stuff to Reign when he was SO wrong for talking about her dead husband was insane. Then not reaching out more than the once, GTFOH! And for MAZ?! There were no redeeming qualities about Maz to make that believable no matter how dumb he is.
The way the roommate revealed that the event that was cancelled was Jasper’s book signing, felt so dumb and forced, I couldn’t roll my eyes back far enough. Also the roommate was lowkey mean in that scene and given Reign’s personality I didn’t believe that she would just roll over for this random girl, it was weird.. and then the scholarship revelation, this author needs to get a grip..
But then after all that, Reign’s never been to NYC but just knew exactly where to find Jasper…….? I could not suspend my disbelief lmao
The way they found Jaylee was another struggle to suspend disbelief and then Jasmine punching Maz in front of the cops… PLEASE 😅😩
The court case was way too easy, real life is not like that. Yes it made sense given the way they found the baby, but because I didn’t believe that scene it made it hard for me to accept the easiness of the court case.
And don’t get me started on the fact that the 5th book in this series ended in ANOTHER engagement, not one this time, but two. How unoriginal. The sex scenes are sounding the same too, it’s just redundant. There should have only been like 3 books honestly!
I’m confused on what she writes for the 6th given that there are no more siblings….. I’m just over it and plan on rushing through the last one as fast as possible.
I’m not gonna lie I’m really disappointed by Adam’s, I forget the title but the book she wrote about that woman in the violent and abusive marriage was so good which made me want to read her whole catalog, but what is this for real…?
Cw: grief, ex who died from cancer, miscarriage, child left alone in house by hero's ex (latter half of book)
This is book 5 in the Johnson series and I haven’t ready any of the others. In fact, this is my first Rilzy Adams book. I plan to read the previous books in the series at some point but even so I was never confused. Prior events are recapped in a way that flowed well with current events.
For both Reign and Jasper we get some flashbacks to moments in their lives that lead them to where they are now.
Jasper as messed up, getting sucked into a relationship he never should’ve had to begin with. At the beginning of the book his life is an entire mess. Some of his family members not happy with him. He decides to take off for Antigua for a bit to get his mind right. Enter Reign.
As someone born, raised and still living in the Caribbean I loved that we got a Caribbean author writing a Caribbean setting. Something I can actually relate to! I haven’t been to Antigua yet but seeing them dancing to dancehall and Reign’s shorts being referred to as pum pum shorts it felt so familiar to me!
Reign and Jasper drawn to each other. And here we have two people who both have inner demons to sort out getting into a physical relationship. Reign is still grieving her ex’s death and isn’t looking for love. Jasper has his ex drama to deal with as well.
As their relationship progressed of course there was wariness on both their parts, and mine! Wondering if their relationship would survive when Jasper went back home to New York. Reign gets accepted to Columbia the bliss they should be feeling comes crashing down.
Honestly Jasper let me down totally when Reign sees his messages with his ex. Granted she shouldn’t have read them to begin with but his nonchalant “this has nothing to do with you” pissed me off sooo much. Boy what you even doing right now??? Yes I was really invested in these two so my anger was warranted lol I wanted to smack Jasper sooooo damn hard.
But boy did I want to kick Mazalee down some stairs because that woman is the woooorst. Glad Jasper bought himself a clue at last because this tug of war of emotions was too much.
The epilogue was really sweet. And makes me want to go read all the other books right now!
I'm sorry but if I were invited in Reign and Jasper's wedding, I would stop that wedding immediately. Reign deserved better! I feel like Jasper didn't even learned a thing and hadn't really reflect on his actions and decisions from back then. It was always the other characters that instill some sense to him and there's just no growth from his part. I repeat, Reign deserved someone better!
Jasper is definitely my least favorite Johnson brother and I commend the author for trying her best to redeem him, but unfortunately, it didn't work for me. When we are at the 70% mark and we see Jasper get back to his usual ways, it's already solidified in me that this man ain't going to grow up and have some spine from himself. How the ending happened also supports that, so no to Jasper Johnson for me.
My first 1-star read of 2023 and I'm so sad because I love Reign's character. I lowkey wished this wasn't a romance book by the end because Reign don't deserve Jasper's ass and I'm going to repeat that over and over again. If you love a wishy-washy hero and tons of drama that could've been avoided if the person involve has a backbone, then this is for you. I don't recommend, sorry not sorry.
"The worst thing isn’t some selfish bitch trying to play you against another man. It isn’t some stupid woman not knowing your value. The worst thing is when someone wants to love you but life didn’t give them a chance." - Reign to Jasper
The drama!! Loved this as well, couldn't stop picturing Tess Thompson as Reign for some reason. I liked Jasper and I liked Reign (well I liked her more) but I do believe and was rooting for their romance, and Mazalee can do one. BUT this one didn't set my heart on fire as much as the others. It was quite frustrating to watch Jasper just not think about a DNA test really and that killed me. I thought about that constantly until the end and wanted to bang my head against the wall. There are a few things like that that bothered me, Jasper went through a thing and was in a toxic, manipulative relationship. But there's only so much of the same conversation I could take from the previous book before dealing with it for half of this book too - only to come full circle and feel like not much has changed in him except finding the right girl. But hey, I enjoyed the drama though. Mazalee is a CHARACTER *deep breaths*
For this one, I usually don't like flashbacks into memories, but it works really well here to watch their romance bloom and be intercut with the traumas they have dealt with. Very cleverly intercut in my opinion.
This was the book I anticipated most from the entire series. Jasper though clearly troubled is my favourite Johnson. It was drama filled , deceitfulness, and romance. It was loaded with passion, treachery, and drama. Mazalee was a nasty, cruel, malicious, and cunning person. Just horrible! Jasper’s saving grace was that things always come full circle. With Mazalee, he made a deal with the devil, but she eventually got her comeuppance as well. Jasper and Reign both had a lot of growing and soul-searching to accomplish. He found a nice balance in Reign, which guided him toward returning to morals, common decency, and normalcy. Mistakes were made, but forgiving others was the main objective. From his family, redemption was unquestionably in the cards. I admired how close he was to his twin, Jasmine. I'm finally listening to her advise. JT needed some time to change his mind, forgive his brother, and admit the unfavorable information he had learned about Mazalee. In the end, Reign and Jasper patiently fought for their love despite the obstacles that were still in the way. Jasper was able to persevere and finish the race because to Reign.
Jasper was so exacerbating. I was waiting to read his book to understand how he could have a 5 year affair with his brothers best friends wife. I thought reading his book I’ll get some insight. I didn’t. Jasper needed therapy not an escape because as the hero he annoyed me beyond belief. Literally from the first page to the last page. I just could not comprehend his stupidity. I’ve never seen a hero that annoys me so much, that’s a wimp, coward and selfish. He barely had any redeeming qualities.
So why did I keep reading? Why the 5 star review. Because a book must be interesting, other characters are intriguing to make me overlook jaspers foolishness.
We've been trying to figure out what JT and Jasper have been fighting about for years, but now we know and it brings Jasper's world crashing down. He's lost his job, he's been arrested, he's cannon fodder for the tabloids, and he's looking for the answers at the bottom of a bottle. His SIL Hallie suggest he disappears to get his shit together. Her home Island of Antigua is nice this time of year. You know what they say, you find things when you're not looking, and Jasper's finds an island girl Reign who becomes his healing balm. Will his past sins keep him from true happiness with Reign?
This was a beautiful love story. It's sad how some mom's don't really care to be a mom. I'm glad Jasper has people in his corner who didn't give up on him. Sometimes it really takes tough love. Family is everything when you have real family. I loved all the series and they were well written. This is an author I can follow forever. She has a way of appealing to the young and old. The stories are very thoughtful and very believable. And the spice is EVERYTHING 🙂. I'm so glad I found her. Thank you Rilzy
Wooh, Jasper's story was good. I do think he and Reign fell a little fast, but it was a good story. Again, RA did a good job with the twists. That Mazalee was horrible. I wish more info had been given on how Jasper wrote her books for her...that subplot was not explored in the flashback chapters, but it was alluded to in this and previous books.
I liked how Grams Nona got herself a man at the end too.

This author knows exactly how to draw you in and get you so invested in her characters that when they act up you're clutching your pearls in the middle of the bar while your friends are playing pool because you cannot believe what the male lead just said to the female lead. Rilzy hooks you and takes you on such emotional rollercoasters through her characters stories that you almost can't recover from. A definite must read!
What a grand conclusionon to a great series! Whew, Jasper's story was deeep! Mazalee was a true sociopath...she had Jasper by the everything. This was definitely a page turner. Loved grandma Nona and was glad to see her get her wish of seeing all of her grandchildren find love 💕 while getting a special surprise of her own.
The suspense and the wait was worth it! Tryna figure out wtf the issue was with him and JT since book 1. Baby, Jasper was IN THE TRENCHES!!! I’m glad he got away and found his forever and got rid of the devil that had him bound. Chile! I was ready to beat Mazalee’s crazy ass especially after the baby drama!!!
I didn’t think I would like Jasper’s story at all but I was pleasantly surprised. He might just be my favorite Johnson brother. I love the growth of both him and Reign and was absolutely thrilled at the ending.
2.5* I initially loved this story. A wealthy businessman decides to escape his bad decisions and consequences, to take a break in Antigua to self-reflect. He meets a smart, beautiful, young woman who lost the love of her life from cancer at a young age. Who wouldn’t love this storyline.
Me, yep me. I was rooting for Reign and Jasper. Until Jasper’s selfishness and dysfunction became too much for me. I think Reign deserved better, so much better. Jasper’s only positive is that he is wealthy. You take that away and he brought nothing to the table. Not my cup of tea.
I knew I would like Jasper's story when I was talking back to the characters 3% in... and I was right! Jasper and Reign's story was so different from the other Johnson's, especially since everyone was so worried for Jasper to even sneeze on his own.
The author did a great job of showcasing the emotional baggage of both Jasper and Reign. I will say that in the end, I wasn't completely sold on the fact that Jasper was healed and ready for a relationship, but I guess that was OK and needed to be part of his journey. Reign was everything he wasn't expecting, and she was a welcome surprise from what we've seen displayed between Jasper and Mazalee over the course of this series. I just liked everything about her.
Great ending to a series that started out in a very unique way. Can't wait to see what's next from Rilzy Adams.
I was a bit anxious to start this book as I knew it would be the end of the series, and I also wasn't emotionally prepared for Jasper's story which I knew would be a Rollercoaster of feelings. But once I did sit down to read I literally could not stop. This story was so painful, so sweet, so perfectly told. And also hot af. Redemption came in so many ways for Jasper and I was so thrilled. Reign was an amazing and relatable heroine, so quick in her wit and so patient with her love. These two made the perfect couple. This finale will not disappoint if you're a fan of the falling like a johnson series. Rilzy is such a great writer and I can't wait for the next series.
Jasper Johnson words escape me when it comes to how selfish he is and what a coward he is. Please don't get it wrong I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Needless to say he hurt a lot of people and was just wow. Then there's Reign beautiful, intelligent woman who tries to live her life without getting hurt. I love Jasper and Reigns story very much it frustrated me at times with him being a jerk but it is so worth the read.
Jasper and Reign. Jasper made several mistakes in his love life but even still no one deserves to be dealt with treacherously. Mazelle was a piece of work I'm glad Reign took a chance on love because Jasper was her true love after all. And Nona proved you're never too old for the love of your life.
I stumbled upon this book. I didn't know it was a series . I read it and couldn't put it down . I like that the flashbacks was not long and drawn out and it didn't take away from the storyline . I didn't like the ending at all. It took away from Jasper and reigns happily ever after.
4.5 stars - I absolutely adored Reign, loved her way more than I did Jasper. The Sweetest Escape has inched in the lead as my favorite book in this series, just after Jasmine and Alec. I'm sad to see the series end, but happy that it ended on such a high note.
