Deepak Chopra, M.D., has emerged as one of the most powerful leaders in the revolutionary field of mind/body medicine. His extraordinary bestseller Quantum Healing explored the mind's connection to seemingly miraculous cures for cancer and other serious illnesses. Now, in Unconditional Life , he undertakes an even greater challenge: to explain how consciousness can lead the way to total freedom and perfect health. Unconditional Life brings together disciplines ranging from modern physics and neuroscience to the ancient traditions of Indian wisdom to show how our perceptions create our reality for good or ill--and how the outside world can be shaped by altering the world within. In a book filled with hope and inspiration, Dr. Chopra offers compelling proof of the power of consciousness and a daring new vision of our own unlimited potential.

Sure, Deepak Chopra gets bashed for pooping out one self help book after another, thinking he is an expert on every field. But you know what? Like many readers, I too bought this simply-written book at a point in life when things looked a little bleach. And like it did with many, it pulled me through as well. His experiences as a doctor, coach and Indian combined with empowering examples guarantee a few eye openers. I was born and raised in a western country and therefore read his take on spirituality, life and religion, with great interest. I wouldn't call 'Unconditional life' a life changing experience: the daily grind takes over soon enough. But I've definitely taken some of his inspiring ideas and campfire stories into account.
A light reading book with some good insights from various disciplines from his experience as a physician to metaphysical principles and wisdom. Has case examples and personal examples woven into the basic premise that we make our life what it is and have the power to change our life if we desire.
Many interesting ideas permeate this book. The author includes anecdotes as introductions to his thoughts on the mind/body connection. Some quotes that resonated with me: The great Shankara who, according to Chopra, "towers over the whole Indian philosophy" said "People grow old and die because they see other people grow old and die." Chopra expands this idea by writing, " If Shankara is right, then aging is not a fixed biological process; it is just a bundle of perceptions we have picked up, taken into our bodies, and given physical shape." Living in a 55+ community I know many people who have outlived the insurance tables regarding life span, and continue to play golf, swim, read and write creatively, etc. I think Mark Twain explained it best: "Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."
"A breakthrough into a higher consciousness from a psyche so devastating that the psyche can't find no other way out "
This books deals with self healing and u will connect with the stories and the respective perspective by the author. It's a great book on body, mind,soul.thing.
The poet Tagore: The same stream of life that runs through the world and dances in rhythmic measures. It is the same life that shoots in joy through the dust of the earth in the numberless blades of grass and breaks into tumultuous waves of leaves and flowers.
Early Chopra; tells lots of incidents, etc. supporting his theory that we, ultimately, are in control but only when we give up our current sense of reality. I didn't take notes as before; figure I probably missed a lot. Not as compelling as later works.
It is fantastic book which kept me engaged till the last page.It is a guide to discover and reinvent onself.Deepak Chopra invites us to see things in different approach.
I'm at this years ago but have not written a review.
The key message of this book is that the subjective mind has been impact on our health and life outcomes.
Deepak Chopra posits that illnesses often lead us to search for meaning for love faith hope and trust. Because the mind needs meaning to exist, and it is an active creator in shaping existence. His point is that you don't need to be sick before you find meaning. And that because the brain perceives reality subjectively, this can be used positively or negatively by us.
He talked about the importance of "magical thinking", the importance of feeling special. He also described the difference between self-referral versus object referral. Self referral sees self as primary, outward things as secondary. While object referral assumes that the mind has no influence on the inside world. And that leads us to focus on the external world.
I really like some of the examples and quotations that Deepak chopra used in this book to show how subjective reality eg stress can affect health outcomes quite drastically.
Quantum physicist Erwin schrodinger was quoted as saying:"inconceivable as it seems to ordinary reason, you and all other conscious beings as such - are all in all. Hence, this life of yours which you are living is not merely a piece of the entire universe, but if, in a certain sense, the whole."
John Wheeler renowned physicist from Princeton university:"We used to think of the universe 'out there', to be observed as it were from behind the screen of the foot thick slap of glass, safely, without personal involvement. The truth, quantum theory tells us, is quite different.. the observer is increasingly promoted to participator. In some strange sense, this is a participatory universe."
I found this book to be a very enjoyable read, but I gave it four stars instead of five simply because it fell short of the promise that I saw in the title. Chopra's writing is excellent, and he is very good at getting his ideas across and making them understandable. I guess what I was looking for was something a little more concrete, telling me actual steps to take in order to reach the states he talked about, or how to do it. Maybe that wasn't his intent, but that was what I hoped to find when I read the title and bought the book. He talks about a lot of things at a philosophical and high level, and he gives us many stories and anecdotes that support his ideas. All of that is great. There are even a few places where he talks - again at a high level - about getting to a point when you and the universe, or field, or whatever are one, and where you can "make" your world. That reminded me of "The Secret", and the Law of Attraction. But it was the HOW that I was looking for, and I didn't find it. I would still really recommend this book, but I would really like to find the book that will teach me, in concrete terms, how to achieve the results that so many of these books talk about in vague and elusive ways.

This book takes allows you to explore the possibility that we make ourselves sick, and also that we have the power to heal ourselves. Heavily influenced by eastern thought. Good writing.
