I hate it when a "for Dummies" book really does a thorough job. It is unexpected, and makes me wonder if I officially qualify as a dummy. It happened on the last one I read, on Jane Austin no less, and again on this one. I picked up (electronically) "Life Coaching for Dummies" because I wanted to know what life coaches do, if this kind of coaching sounded like something I could do, and if it could have an impact on my life. This book answered all of these questions to an unexpectedly deep level. It is a bit of a difficult book to read straight through, as the bulk of the chapters focus on specific questions or topics that you might not have ready need to understand. This would make a good reference to keep on hand for when you hit those topics in your life, as it looked like they are very common topics.
I've tried buying or borrowing dummies books, but I've never been able to finish reading any of them. This is the first one I've managed to get through. One of my goals is to be able to self- coach. I like many aspects of coaching and believe it is a useful tool for a happier, healthier life, especially if you're like me and have lots of goals!
I have some knowledge of coaching as I've done some training. It might be harder to read this if you've not had any experience of it.
This is my list of pros and cons:
The downside: - Dummies books can be dry and I did feel at times it was alot of pitching other books or the benefits of coaching, which did become a little tiresome. - Some sections and topics were too brief, although they do make a great introduction to different subjects.
The upside: - However, I did learn alot from the contents overall and it provided me with clarity for several projects I'm currently working on. - So it was a worthwhile investment of my time. - It has inspired and encouraged me to move forward on things I have been procrastinating on. - There were some helpful tips and ideas. - I especially loved the idea of finding balance and also, parts in the book around mindset were also insightful.
Recommendation: - This is a book for skimming the bits which don't interest you. - Explore and consider in more detail those aspects that do. - A good introduction to coaching but I do feel that I would benefit from reading another book on the subject because it wasn't comprehensive enough and quite light in some areas. - Dummies books are reliable. I do feel like a dummy reading it, so it may not be for everyone in terms of tone and style. - Definitely read up on coaching. It is a brilliant tool and has made a difference to my life.
