In 1969, Margaret Miles was a hard-up 21-year-old with a young daughter and a weight problem. Pregnant at 15, thrown out by her adoptive parents and married at 16, she’d abandoned her dream of going to medical school, instead taking on a string of dead-end jobs and struggling to make ends meet. Restless, frustrated and determined to create a better life for herself and her family, Margaret took the bold decision to start her own business, in an area she’d come to know a lot about – slimming. Working at her kitchen table in Derbyshire, she created a revolutionary programme which would turn the world of dieting on its head – a liberating new approach to weight loss offering freedom from hunger and from humiliation.
And so Slimming World was born. From humble beginnings it went on to become a household name, and today it’s the UK’s favourite way to lose weight, offering a lifeline to millions of overweight people.
This inspiring story about life, love and Slimming World is a heart-warming, sometimes heart-breaking account of single-mindedness, passion and compassion. In it, Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE shares the highs and lows of building a business on little more than belief, dogged determination and a genuine desire to touch hearts and change lives.
$1 from every sale will be donated to Slimming World’s charity, SMILES, which supports Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society.

I loved this book. I really wanted to know her story , especially as she is the founder of Slimming World, which had made a huge difference to me. Engaging, occasionally trite, but never dull, well worth’s the time spent to read. Truly inspirational lady, and I’d love to meet her
An interesting life. But all this soul searching "I'm not in it for the money" was too sickly for me. Lots of silly little quips, almost one per page, that got annoying.
It was interesting to discover what the start of Margaret’s life was and to see the evolution of the company. I was trying to decide what the uncomfortable feeling was I had when reading this book and I was trying to decide whether she simply wasn’t a great writer! Then I read a Goodreads review which said the reviewer didn’t like her writing ‘style’ due to her overuse of ‘puns’ and I think that pretty much explains how I felt too. There was no necessity for them and it made what I would otherwise have thought must be an clever woman (in terms of her dietary knowledge) to be appear not very professional, which I am sure is inaccurate. She appeared to be writing for two different audiences, those who do read, and those who aren’t accustomed to reading! And need puns to keep them ‘grounded’. Disappointing really.
A super interesting first half and I loved finding out more about a company, and it's founder, very close and dear to my heart. However, wasn't a great fan of the style (I like a pun as much as the next person, but the overuse was rather jarring).
A truly amazing autobiography about the founder of Slimming World, a very honest account of her amazing journey in life. An inspirational story of her early years and personal life to date. Margaret is so inspirational, she has made me look at life in a very different way.
A fascinating insight to how slimming world got started and continues to thrive. Margaret-miles_bramwell tells her inspirational story of her early years and personal life to date.
