For some reason the style of this book just didn't jive with my personal tastes in plants used for decorating. I was impressed though that the one contributor has 400 plants in their home... that's a lot. I'd feel like I was watering them all the time. It did have some good recipes for non-chemical pest and fungus control which I thought was nice.
Green: Plants for small spaces, indoors and out By Jason Chongue
Green is a great ‘how to’ book for small plant and potted gardening. It covers both outdoor and indoor but with a focus on indoor plants.
I found the book easy to read and well laid out. The language is clear, with guidance structured. Plenty of photos are included for inspiration with the names of plants added.
There are some sections interspersed in the book about people’s experience with small plants and indoor gardens. I did find these odd and in some places a little commercial (a couple talk more about their business than gardening) but they are minor sections.
Overall a really handy guide for beginners looking to set up potted gardens.
Not your ordinary gardening book and for that it only rates 2 stars for me and that's a stretch. This seemed to me to be a vanity project, lots of beautiful photographs, but thin on easily useable information. Strangely organized. One page on propagation with one full page photo, then a few pages later, a couple more pages on other ways to propagate with generous white space surrounding the illustrations that actually take up more space than the text. One page on composting followed by a full page of an artfully arranged banana peel and cup of food scraps. Information on specific plants is scattered throughout. There are much better references for growing plants and you'll need them because this book won't help much.
As a novice getting into indoor and balcony plants this book was a fab Christmas gift. Whilst it doesnt have absolutely everything I need, it has great introductions to understanding climate, styling plants, caring for greenery and how to troubleshoot. The book is beautiful, written by an Aussie and I love all the photos (especially ones where a dog features). Only downside is that there was advice for arid, temperate and Mediterranean climates... I live in a tropical climate so would've like to have seen some info for that. Makes a pretty coffee table book!
