My name is Bridget Essex, and I write about werewolves, vampires and lady knights; about two strong, courageous women who fall deeply in love with one another, living love stories that transcend time. I'm married to the love of my life, author Natalie Vivien.
I'm best known for my Knight Legends series, stories about women knights, real world hi-jinks and love stories that are out of this world. My Sullivan Vampire novellas are a popular series lauded as "TWILIGHT for women who love women," and I have several other series and stand-alone novellas, and I'm always putting out something new. It’s not a bad book. I slightly enjoyed it, to be honest. The characters are good, i like both main characters and Falicity. However, the narration tion in this book were too much, long and a lot. I found myself to want skim through the book so badly but i stopped myself. There wasnt anything happened much. . And Maggie’s sister had been only mention through out the book and only appeared at around the last 10% of the book. And only in that last 10%, that it has been mention that Maggie’s sister, Mariah, is her twin. I mean, really? 😦😑 and what with that decision at the last scene? It seems force just so that that last scene can happened.
To say that Maggie's life has been rough would be to soft peddle it. She ran away from a life torn to pieces by the woman that she hates with all her heart. Maggie lives surrounded by wilderness with just her rescue animals for companionship. She visits town to buy supplies and spend time with her best friend. Her worst fear and persistent nightmare is that everything she holds dear will be taken away again by her tormentor. She finds a traumatized woman hiding in her barn and decides to help her.
Protect Her is a story driven by two extremely different feelings. Maggie rescues Catherine and she's welcomed into her small family. The same woman wants to destroy both of these women. Maggie won't allow anyone to harm Catherine. The plot depends on three equally important elements. It works as a romance, a mystery and a supernatural thriller. Strong emotions are infused into all of the action. As a fan of Bridget Essex, I really liked Protect Her. The book is short, but it covers so many heavily charged issues. It's another good novel from a prolific and talented writer.
First things first... I had no idea this book was about bloody werewolves. I’ve not really been into the genre, but before I’d clocked on that it was about wolves, I was already into the story and couldn’t turn back.
All things considered, I kind of enjoyed the book. It could’ve had more tension, especially in the end. I felt the ending was a little underwhelming, especially after the build up.
I felt betrayed by this book… First, my Kindle suggested I read it, and it was included in KindleUnlimited, and had a pretty decent star rating there. However, nowhere in the description did it tell me I was going to be reading about WEREWOLVES!!!! C'mon! You gotta warn a woman, especially when that is NOT her genre. Of course, I didn't learn of this until it was too far in and I was too interested to turn back. I mean, it was "free"… So it lacks some character development, things progress rapidly, the climatic moment becomes decidedly anti-climatic, and then it goes down from there for me. Idk. Honestly, my 3 starts isn't even because of the werewolves, but just because the whole thing didn't really live up. *shrug* YMMV.
This is one of the better Essex shifter books I have listened to. Maggie is an author who lives with her rescued animals on a small farm on the edge of the Allegheny National Forest. One winter morning she goes to the barn and finds a mute women hiding in the hay loft. The story unfolds from there and fate takes a hand.
It was so exciting to hear the struggle Maggie went through in a winter storm and on an icy river, like a Walt Longmire story (only Maggie does this in her wolf form). The narrator, Marina Barrett, was perfect for telling this tale. I recommend the Audible of this book as it brought the whole adventure alive. I was enthralled by parts of this tale.
Incredibly anti-climactic. You spend the entire book waiting on this big confrontation, and it's over in a page. Also in my opinion, insanely easy, there should have been more fight. [SPOILERS] This 'big-bad' gets undone by some ice water? I mean sure it's plausible, but... how anti-climactic.
Maggie leads a solitary life with no interest in other people. Now she comes across a mysterious woman who changes her life forever. A woman with whom she feels a connection that she has never felt with anyone else. Not only her life changed but it also leads to a terrifying confrontation. Not knowing were the danger might be, not knowing when it will happen keeps me on the edge of my seat. You can feel, touch the tension, the angst and the longing. A quite thrilling story with an intriguing plot and a beautiful blossoming love. I highly recommend this awesome book.
This is my second Bridget Essex book to buy and after really, really liking The Longing I could not wait to read Protect Her. Overall, the same terrific writing and characterization is here, but I find myself troubled by the dynamics that exist between the two women, Maggie and Catherine. Catherine, especially, with her very recent past relationship with Maggie's sister _and_ her "stars in her eyes" adoration of Maggie, just strikes me hard as someone not at all ready to be in a new relationship.
Maggie thinks of Catherine as strong, but I just do not see that and, as I also do with The Longing, I I feel rather uncomfortable with the relationship portrayed...here, as in The Longing, the two women just not seem to be on equal footing and this took away a lot of the story for me.
A much, much smaller problem I have with Protect Her is how many times the author uses the word "growled." I lost count of its uses and have never known anyone to growl their words...whether she is a werewolf or not. Still, I would definitely read another Bridget Essex novel because she is so adept at capturing human emotion and love.
I like reading about werewolves, but not this variety that stay completely human in wolf shape. There was a good build up of dread and suspense in the book, but the resolve appeared with such ease that it’s a bit anticlimactic.
The premise of mistreated girlfriend falling for the look-alike (but not act-alike, of course) sister made for a bit uncomfortable reading at times.

Didn't know this author, so was surprised we the main character turned out to be a werewolf. Not really my thing but it was an okay book. Could have used a little more action though, the ending was there and over quick.
Really more of a 3 1/2 star book. A decent rainy day read. There is a lot of introspection and only a little bit of action. The resolution come rather quick and it was not quite as satisfying as I was hoping for.
This awesome book came across my Amazon recommendation feed and I thought, “hey, self, this looks pretty good!” I’m always down for a suspenseful romance (romantic suspense?) book, so I settled in to begin a new adventure. I hadn’t read Bridget Essex’ stuff before, so if you aren’t already aware...let me just put it out there...werewolves. I had no idea. But I’ll be honest, I’m glad I didn’t because I probably wouldn’t have given this book a shot. I’ve never been interested in werewolves, or shapeshifters, or vampires, or witches, or any other aspects of urban fantasy (but my wife is so I’ve been somewhat aware of the themes), so I would absolutely have missed out on finding a fantastic new author.
Color me shocked. I was thoroughly surprised at how much I really enjoyed the werewolf aspect of this story, and it really opened my mind. Thankfully Bridget sucked me in, getting me hooked on her remarkable writing, the brooding Maggie and this mysterious woman in her barn before slamming down the werewolf card on me.
Ah, Tionesta, Pennsylvania — my family spent a lot of summer evenings camping out in that area when I was growing up, lots of shopping having been done in Meadville, and many, many, many days visiting my Grandmother in Erie. So I could absolutely experience the rural solitude of the book, smell the cold air and feel it burning my cheeks, see the the enormity of the starry sky. And being snowed it? Oh yeah, that really does happen.
I was kind of...I guess...disappointed (?) that the big showdown came with only 10% left in the book and then felt rushed. I really enjoyed the anticipation throughout the story and the depiction of the utterly ruthless Moriah, but felt a bit let down by the fight.
Because I have to suspend my belief to read stories about werewolves, I can get through the shape shifting and get lost in the story; and, Miss Essex has written a wonderful love story within "Protect Her". Twin sisters, one evil and one good, who will meet and it's never known until the end who will win. I felt the cold, biting wind and snow. I wanted to stay inside but these characters wanted to be outside; walking to the barn. Good dialogue, effective back story, and exciting action on river ice. Thank you Miss Essex for a wonderful escape into the world you wrote.
This is a very well written tale with well developed characters and an engrossing storyline. Twins who are as different as day and night, one good, the other evil. One who has retreated to a cabin at the edge of the woods, closing off her heart to love, scarred by loss. That is, until she finds a woman huddled, mute and freezing, in her barn during a winter storm. I highly recommend this book be placed on your must-read list!
I liked the book, it was a well developed story. The chemistry between the two main protagonists Maggie and Catherine was off the charts. I enjoyed Felicity’s persona as Maggie’s best friend. Her character was very well developed. The suspenseful process of finally meeting Moirah was a bit anticlimactic but nevertheless was very well done. All is all very well done.
Bridget Essex once again brings a tale of love and danger. I loved Maggie from the start. As a character she is well developed and relatable. Exactly the type of woman I would fall for. I would have loved for Catherine to be more developed. I always want More from Bridget's characters. She creates the fantasy we all long for and never fails to make us fall in love.
Morgan did not not the word stop or no. Even when she killed the alpha , her parents and the girl she could never have. Maggie her sister was the opposite. She finally escaped or so she thought until she finds her sisters newest conquest hiding in her barn. Enjoy!
I enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed this take on siblings and differences in their personalities. I found it interesting to watch the relationship between Maggie and Catherine develop and change.
