UNIQUE, CREATIVE AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING SECRETS ABOUT OTHERS I am the book that is reading you as you read me. I know your good and bad thoughts and your emotions. I share secrets with you about people you may recognise, including yourself. My tales divulge the shocking, the sad and the horrors of crime. Sadly, my first book was involved in the deaths of people. I will tell your more about that in this book. I will tell you about joy and pleasure in people. And, you will also see the ironic destinies of the foolish. I have no idea how or why it happens. My first book could read its readers and I learnt a lot about them, as I have already learnt about you. You see, I do not read you word by word, page by page as you do with me. As soon as you start to look at my words in any form, printed or electronic, I know everything about you. If that scares you then it is too late. I now understand your feelings, your loves and compassion. And I also know all the bad things about people. Go ahead, if you dare. Read me so that I can read more about you and your stories. In return I promise to be a closed book and I will never tell your story to others.
I see what the author was trying, but it fell flat.
Ugh, this is first of all a collection of short stories. It took me so long to read because it is terribly boring, extremely pretentious and just an agonising read. One positive, the only positive is a couple of interesting short stories and surprise endings, but it is completely overshadowed by the dullness of others. My first book in 2021 and I never want to read it again. Do I need to mention how pretentious this was! The synopsis sounded so interesting and intriguing, I expected to gain deeper insight into myself and to be read by the book (like described) but no. It's a collection of short stories, and there is nothing wrong with that, but it wasn’t stated as such until I began to read it. The number of times I rolled my eyes while reading this was astronomical, I’m surprised my eyes aren’t stuck at the back of my head.
The concept was fascinating but the book, unfortunately, was poorly written. Characterisation, especially of female characters, relied far too often on tired stereotypes.
I didn't mind that it was a short book. I did mind the repeated defensive comments about its length, both from the narrator and from the author in paratext.
