Ariel is a fire witch, although she doesn’t have a great understanding or control of her powers. One evening she is making out with the boy she had a high school crush on, Jordan, she can’t believe her luck. That is until he tries to suck her blood. Turns out he really is a vampire and Ariel is to be his evening snack.
Although he is pulled off by his brother Ryan, Ariel loses control and uses her powers against Jordan, vaporising him. His brother is angry, not only because Ariel killed him but because she’s a witch too.
He’s determined to get Ariel back and summons a demon to take care of her, but not everything is as easy as it seems.
Warmth is a short novella of just 99 pages (90 in the paperback version). It is a paranormal romance book that deals with the fall out between a vampire and a fire witch. Although Ariel has no proper control over her powers she is strong in other ways and has a feisty character.
Ryan is a sexy vampire but even vampires need more than good looks. He is upset and angry with Ariel and wants revenge and does so by using his powers to get someone else to do his dirty work, demon Besarion, who is actually quite amusing. But has he made a mistake?
The book was a quick read, I read it in under an hour and in one sitting. The writing flowed, the pace was good and I did enjoy the plot. My issue with the book though is more to do with the size. You see I feel it needed some world building, some explanation of why and how these people became to be vampires and witches living amongst mortals.
There was also a romance element to the book but because it came around quickly it didn’t feel authentic. There wasn’t enough time to get involved with the character and fully like them. I feel even if there had been an extra 10/15 pages that dealt with the backstory this would have made the book more interesting and intriguing.
Fire and it's warmth was what this book was themed on. A warlock and a witch were the key players. Then came the demon from hell and a vampire from earth and there was contracts made and contracts failed.
The entire premise of the story by Liv Miles was great, it had its exciting parts. I loved the demon Besarion, he brought excitement in the scenes he appeared in. The rest of the characters were meh... I didn't like Ariel or Ryan or Jordan
The book had a few niggles, the chapters were disjointed, didn't have a rhythm or a flow. Even though it was a novella, it should have had a sense of a story. It had potential, but the delivery lacked. The entire book left me with a sense of incompleteness.
At 99 pages, it took me less than an hour to complete. On to my next read...
I was so into this story at the start of the novel! Ariel was such a tragic character. She clearly did not have full control over her powers, even though she had been practicing for years. Now she murdered her high school crush. Sure, he was attacking her at the time and trying to drink her blood because he was a vampire. But that doesn't mean that he deserved to die. Ryan, his twin brother, is after her now. He doesn't believe that it was an accident and sends a demon after her.
I liked that Ariel didn't just "get over' the murder. She knew that something wasn't right about the entire situation, but she had to keep moving on with her life. Even as a demon was after her, she continued to be civil to Ryan and go to her classes.
Ryan was a bit much for me. I thought that he hated Ariel, and this made him quite an interesting character. Then, he randomly started falling for her. And she started falling for him! There was no paranormal influence in the romance portion of the novella, it was just instalove. I wouldn't mind instalove, but under these circumstances, it just seems rushed. Ryan still thinks that this girl killed his brother, but he is just going to drop all of these thoughts on a random feeling of "like." If his hatred of Ariel hadn't been so severe at the start of the novella, the transition into the "love" storyline would have been smoother.
Overall, this was an okay romance novella. I didn't love it all the way through, but the story was interesting. I ended up liking the demon/murder plot more than the romance plot. This would definitely have made a great paranormal murder novella with a bit of romance at the end! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fantasy/mystery short story.
I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
It's difficult sometimes to rate a novella versus a novel because the whole point of a novella is to be a short shot of story and that is certainly delivered by this one. Yet I can't help but feel that I wanted more. More detail, more time, more development in both plot and character, just more, ya know?
I really was intrigued by the premise of this story though. I found it entertaining, spooky, alluring, and while there were some good twists and foundations in the story I can't help but feel as if it's a touch incomplete, like if the author were to go back and extend or add in scenes and time to really flesh out the plot then the finished story and the world it's set in would be something readers would readily invest in whether for a novella, a novel, or an entire series. The ARC I was given by the author to read was a great beginning, but I think it can be so much more, like it just doesn't seem quite finished. Regardless, I enjoyed what I did read :)
Warmth is Liv Miles's debut PNR novella and introduces us to a world of magic and darkness. This story is very well written and interesting read. I really enjoyed this novella and the adventure Miles took me on. Ariel's bravery really surprised me throughout the story. She did a heck of a job keeping her cool during everything that happened. I know I would have probably had a meltdown the first moment I had to myself. Sometimes she was so calm and collected it seemed almost unbelievable. Ryan is such a complex character, so I was really glad that Miles chose to alternate points of view throughout the story and give us a peek inside his head and thoughts!
The only thing I wanted was more. More details about the characters. More information on the world and the magic. More would have definitely pushed me to give Warmth more stars, but even as a 20K word novella I enjoyed it. I really would love to see this turned into a full length novel or series so we can learn more about the characters and their magical world. I think it would be so much fun to read about!
I liked this story. It has a lot going on in it, for being such a short story. The characters felt fully fleshed out, though erratic at times, switching from one extreme to another (I’m looking at Ryan when I say that, but he did run with the goth/emo crowd). They all had their failings, Ryan with his swinging extreme emotions (and because of those emotions overpowering him, I was having trouble parsing his personality underneath), Ariel with her smoking (she lost my respect as a character when she first lit up, and she seemed rather old to be naïve to be alone with the hot guy who she only knows by rep in the dark). I am annoyed that it really wasn’t addressed that she needs training in her magic. She keeps trying to suppress it and with suppressing it, she’s just going to continue having accidents like she did with Jordan. It also annoyed me that beyond the guilt and feelings of Ryan and Ariel, that Jordan’s death was like it never happened. There should be some sort of legal recrimination for his death, be it at the hands of the vampires who turned him or Ariel who roasted him to a crisp. I kind of wanted more time with Jordan in the beginning since it seemed like he might actually want to get to know Ariel as more than just a quick hot moment in a car. And I liked Besarion. He had a lot of world-weary, cynical humor to him, with a mischievous bent. It had a good blend of fantasy and magic and creatures along with the urban. So often books are either one way or the other with just a light dusting of fantasy without achieving a good 50/50 blend of the two. It does deal with bereavement and guilt, two very moving topics, and has tension and suspense, and quite a bit of magic along with the real world problems of having to pull her life back together after crippling guilt. And I don’t want to spoil, but I do love the enemies to lovers trope. I devoured this rather quickly and would definitely consider reading more by Liv Miles (but I don’t do werewolf books).
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This book was lots more than I expected. It made me feel a little on edge on for most of the book. It is a novella and there is a lot packed into a few pages. It get right to the point and held on to me until the last page. I would definitely read more by this author. I enjoyed the book a lot. There were a couple of things did not add up but that does not stop the book from being enjoyable.
For a short story I thought this was great! I have no clue why this book only has 3.5 stars. I loved how well it was written and how we had some twists and turns. I haven’t read anything paranormal in a while and that definitely scratched the itch. I highly recommend!
New Years Eve, and Ariel Winchester was in the front seat of Jordan’s new truck, kissing him! He was one of the most popular guys, handsome, captain of the wrestling team in high school, honor student, absolutely alpha type. How could he have chosen her to be with tonight? She touched his muscular chest… and his skin was cold. Even his lips were cold, which she had not noticed before. She deepened their kiss and his tooth cut her tongue! He continued to kiss her and hold her tightly, but now she was afraid. His mouth moved to her neck and he licked her skin. Now his eyes were glowing! His laughter rumbled and she hoped he was teasing her. But the grin revealed fangs! Maybe that was why he chose her, because no one would come to her rescue. She was a nobody. And apparently now, she was his midnight snack.
Jordon clamped onto her neck and bit. She slapped at him, but he continued to drink. But Ariel was a fire witch and not helpless. Her head was spinning, her vision clouded, she had to burn him to make him stop. But nothing happened as she was so weak and slumping in the seat. She pulled her sweatshirt over her head as the front windshield exploded. He grabbed her kept the doors locked, laughing as she scrambled out the open space of the windshield. And now she was angry. He was a liar, a bully, laughing at her. She looked in his eyes, a mistake, and he made her come close to him. A voice behind her demanded he let her go. Ryan’s brother was there. Would he save her? But now her own fire magic went out of control as Jordan’s pants leg caught fire. She tried to stop it, but it flamed higher. And then he was nothing but ashes.
Ryan Walker is out for revenge. He is a warlock and summons a demon Besarion to get revenge on Ariel. He did not consider the price in blood to be paid. Now he needs her help to stop what he has unleashed. Jordan, as a demon, appeared in front of both of them, claiming he chose Ryan as his sacrifice. As he hurled a shadow toward Ryan to take his life, Ariel’s own body pulled power and a burst of energy shot from her fingertips to create a protective shield of golden light around Ryan and the curse bounced off. But Jordan inhaled their suffering, panic, and anger as if he tasted a fine wine and the wasted body began to regenerate. Ariel sunk to the floor dying and he heard her say “Forgive”. Will they contain this? Or will more death and destruction be unleashed?
ONE THRILLING MAGICAL LANDSLIDE!!! Enthralling! Liv brought out the heavy artillery, dropping the bomb and lowering the boom with this nailbiting storyline and gripping plot, revving up the thrill of the chase and skill of the hunt, blasting this incredible treat to life beautifully. Crashing the boundaries and stretching the limits, displaying the strengths and weaknesses being weighed and balanced, propelling this jewel on-ward without a hitch, slamming it into overdrive, launching it into a tailspin with a life-changing realization. Unsettling happenstance and stunning mishaps, swirl with the intimidating trials and challenging tribulations, spinning alongside the crazy twists and wicked turns, putting our characters through their paces, wrapping this gem up flawlessly. Bearing the burdens and towing the line, imparting this action packed, hard hitting, pulse racing, heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, page flipping, block busting bombshell, blasting this baby to a whole new realm. Coiled, twined and tightly woven, showcasing the explosive ups and agonizing downs, grounding in it's simplicity and awe-inspiring in it's depth. The characters are complex and authentic with depth and traits that blend and flow, transforming into genuinely relatable personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and depictions creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Amazing job Liv, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
I had 2 and only 2 problems with this book. 1. It drove me nuts how she got bitten at the beginning and appeared to be losing a lot of blood but was totally fine after (if you lose blood you're going to feel the effects of that for more than a couple of minutes). And 2. The book was not long enough.
The writing and characters in this book are actually really good. There are some lines in this book that are just so poetic and well written. However, this was a full-length plot stuck in a tiny novella, and as a result, it didn't give the characters the justice they deserved. I needed a 400 page, friends to enemies to lovers arc and 90 pages isn't cutting it. I need the drama. And the spice. And the anger. And the misery. And the infatuation. And the crushing.
Had this book been longer and had it fixed the blood issue in the beginning, this would've been an easy 5 star read. Heck, I'd even re-read it if a longer version came out. This just has a classic plotline that will age well and fill you with that nostalgia you secretly miss from all those years ago.
**Presented with an ARC from the author via StoryOrigin in exchange for an honest review.**
One thing, among many, that I absolutely adore is how easy Liv makes it for the reader to climb inside Ariel’s mind, to feel her fear and confusion over the power that she has so little control over and just how much that terrifies her. To see Ryan’s reaction to all that happened, his rage and grief turned fury, the actions he took. In a way, it’s so very natural, and in another, it’s so far from normal and acceptable that it rings with an air of truth.
For this to be a prequel speaks of just how engaging and powerful the series is as a whole, and I know I will be hunting down the other works of Live Miles to read more. If you like Brittni Chenelle, Alison Rose, A.D. Winter, Stephanie Rowe, Mary Fan, or Megan Blackwood, you will love this book!
Ariel, a young witch is out with a hot guy from school. It turns out, he is not what she was hoping for. Jordan is a vampire with a taste for young witch blood and he is bound and determined to get hers. Things go awry and even and Ryan, his little brother, tries to rescue her, jordan ends up biting the dust instead.
Ryan is not content with the outcome and decides to bring in outside help on the matter. Ryan just happens to be a warlock and curses Ariel. Things proceed and yet again, the facade falls and the truth of the matter comes to light. The ending actually surprised me.
My favourite character has to be Besarion, the demon summoned to finish the job. His banter back and forth with Ariel is delightfully entertaining.
I received a free copy in return for an honest review.
It took me an hour to read this novella. If you like a quick cute supernatural romance read with not much depth you are in for a nice novella. It just was a bit too simple for me. The MC is 20 years old and a fire witch, but she has not embraced her powers and is more afraid of them than willing to learn how to control and master her power. That annoys me.
Furthermore the romance interests seem a bit shallow - they talk about good looking and handsome / pretty but not really about the personality traits that attract them. Like I said a bit shallow.
That last part sounds really negative, but that is not the overall vibe I got from reading the book. It is just a novella, there cannot be that much depth and it is a fun read with a creative storyline. Just not for me :-).
As novella's go, this one has a good story for how short it is. Characters that are likable and I really enjoyed reading about the main character Ariel. I'm not so sold on Ryan, but I'm not sure I was supposed to be either. He is the villain to start with before it all takes a turn in a different direction.
I'd love more description, but fitting more in this small book might have made the story flow disjointed.
Overall, it's an enjoyable, short read to sit and chill with on a Sunday night. It's not too complicated or action filled, it's a sweet read.
Great eBook. Great Title as well. It has many good things that make a good book , love, magic, mayhem, demons, vampires and witches. Ariel the main character is a fire witch and she gets into all sorts of trouble but manages to use magic to save herself. But there is a price to pay for meddling with the supernatural. What will happen now will she be able to get help. Many more good characters including her twin brother[Ryan] and a demon[Besarion] , a fast paced exciting story. Too short though cannot wait for next book. Thanks Liv....
Though a good read with an enjoyable plot, writing that flowed and the pace steady the story was too short. There isn't enough world building or character development. The romantic feel wasn't authentic. You don't have enough time to get acquainted with the characters to really put yourself in their shoes to fully like them. I realize authors want to get their stories out and publishers cut things so they can turn one book into two or three, but that's an injustice to your readers. In today's world we want to immerse ourselves in a story to forget for a few hours what is going on outside.
The novella Warmth by Liv Miles tells the story of a young twenty year old witch named Ariel who becomes the focal point of an unseen and ongoing battle between two twin brothers. This book was a great story with a very important moral. I really enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and the ending of this story was quite surprising. I really enjoyed it. It is a fast paced novella about magic misused that reflects on the fine line between good and evil.
Ariel is a fire witch that hates her powers. When Jordan, a cool guy at school (vamp) kisses her on New Years Eve she thinks she is the luckiest girl. Do not cue romantic music. Things go downhill from here for Ariel. This is a good story that I think all will enjoy, it has surprises, mystery, tragedy and a bit of romance. I was given a free copy of this book at my request and this is my honest review.
Ariel is a fire witch she’s shy but a bit of an outcast her crush Jordan kisses her one night then he puts his fangs in her neck you see Jordan is a vampire he is pulled off Ariel by his brother Ryan who is a warlock but Ariel can’t control herself or her powers and she burns Jordan to ash, from there Ryan is determined to get revenge against Ariel. This is a fantastic short paranormal story it has so much going on in this story I enjoyed it immensely and I highly recommend this book.
Warmth: A Paranormal Romance Novella by Liv Miles is such a wonderful story that I have read. This is a wonderful story that I have fallen in love written by a brand new author for me to read. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about witches, dark and paranormal romances.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Very great book definitely worth the read. Please read u won't retreat it.the story is well written, def a page turner.I do hope that there will be a second book too finish off some of the story. This is the1st book by this auther and i will definitely b reading more by her bc I. This book alone I can tell i will love her writhing style. Please give out a Chance
The author packed a lot in this one: fire witches, vampires, demonic spirits, back-firing spells, an authentic budding romance between two people with a reason to fear (or hate) the other... But most of all, it was expertly written. Horror elements felt corrosive, and visceral; passionate moments were slow-burning, and felt earned; and fantasy elements were remixed in a fresh, exciting way I hadn't seen before.
My only complaint? Warmth was too short! I knew it was a novella but I was surprised by how quickly I moved through it. Liv is a master of show, don't tell! I will say that I'd love to see more of this world. Not necessarily the characters, but maybe people adjacent to them. Paranormal romance is my first love, and this made me want to read more. Can't wait to see what else Liv publishes!
I thought this was a great quick read. The story had a great plot and flowed well. I found the characters and story well written and interesting. I would recommend reading.

Story Origin review: This book was a sweet short story. They're was not a enough time for the characters to develop into people I would emotionally invest in. But it was still a good read. I like to read about them in future books. Maybe even them as adults.
A decent light read, love story. Although predictable, it contained passion, hate, jealousy, death and a humorous demon, which I liked the best. A short story, easy to follow.
Ariel was a witch with the power of fire but she was in a personal denial. She had a crush on Jordan, Ryan’s twin brother. When after an unfortunate accident Jordan was killed and it appeared Ariel did it, Ryan summoned a demon to kill her and then all heck broke loose. This interesting and intriguing story led Ariel and Ryan on a dangerous path towards an unexpected relationship.
