Channel Kindness: Stories of Kindness and Community

Rate this book
For Lady Gaga, kindness is the driving force behind everything she says and does.

The quiet power of kindness can change the way we view one another, our communities, and even ourselves. She embodies this mission, and through her work, brings more kindness into our world every single day.

Lady Gaga has always believed in the importance of being yourself, being kind to yourself, and being kind to others, no matter who they are or where they come from. With that sentiment in mind, she and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world a kinder and braver place. Through the years, they've collected stories of kindness, bravery and resilience from young people all over the world, proving that kindness truly is the universal language. And now, we invite you to read these stories and follow along as each and every young author finds their voice just as Lady Gaga has found hers.

Within these pages, you’ll meet young changemakers who found their inner strength, who prevailed in the face of bullies, who started their own social movements, who decided to break through the mental health stigma and share how they felt, who created safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, and who have embraced kindness with every fiber of their being by helping others without the expectation of anything in return.

In one story, you’ll read about a young person with an autoimmune disease, who after being bullied at school, learned how to practice self-love and started an organization with the mission of educating others about the importance of self-love, too; and in another story, you’ll meet a young person who decided to start a movement to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraged others to talk about their feelings openly and honestly, a reminder that kindness and mental wellness go hand in hand.

Not only were we moved by these individual acts of kindness, but we were also touched by the many stories of organizations, neighborhoods, and entire communities that fully dedicated themselves to helping those in need and found new, innovative ways to make our world a kinder and braver place.

Individually and collectively, these stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world.

I appreciate the message of being kind and doing good for one another, but this should not have been a book. It is quite evident it was only published because of Lady Gaga.

Each “chapter” felt more like reading a blog post instead of a flushed out story. Ended up skimming parts because it just didn’t hold my attention since you knew how each portion would end.

Sometimes crossing mediums doesn’t always work out.

Thank you to the publisher and Libro FM for my review copy - all thoughts are my own.

"Kindness costs nothing... but it's priceless." -Gaga

This nifty tome of inspiration (for nothing is more inspiring than the young choosing the correct path of kindness) collects different stories, ideas, social movements. Yeah, most of it is do-unto-othersisms... Kindness and nonprofits go hand-in-hand. I, lover of the Nonprofit world (and pessimist extraordinaire of the Profit/Capitalistic one), found much hope. Hope, which is pretty much the reason I stopped reading a novel and instead read a nonfic from the church of Mother Monster. It is necessary, ever more...

The highlights for me included topics such as: 1)Philanthroparties, 2)BC4F (Birthday Cakes for Free), 3)The Special Olympics Inclusion Revolution, 4)The International Day of Self Love, 5)People of Color in Publishing, 6)Technology used... to rescue children who need help or are in danger (Did you know that more than 4 children die daily from abuse in the USA?!)

But of course. I love Lady Gaga... but. But, me, being me, I will point out the not so good, too! (Violating kindness, I suppose, but also having read the thing, my right, too.)
1)For profit (Buy 1, Give 1) "kindness." No, you dont get anything in return. Capitalizing, while smart, invalidated the idea of giving, it taints it. Someone will get the dough. Not you. Not the people in need. It is guilt consumerism... (There are 2 or 3 examples of "great" businesses, blurp!)
2)The book is vivid with pictures. Well, some selected pictures. Like the pictures of the authors/reporters, and not photos of the subjects and/or products/events/places. If you want pictures, instead of pictoral descriptions of great stuff like the Pop-Up "stores" or the blanket... look elsewhere (I guess... do research?).
3)There is one story by one reporter that fell absolutely flat. About kindness at a Starbucks. Just that. Someone gave something for free. And its written by one of the Born This Way Foundation bigwigs. Included here, because, well, because. Unnecessary! Why is the lamest and least interesting of all the stories written by an actual grown up? Like, no. (And the privilege of having this type of story to tell, to publish, I mean, my god!)

But yeah. Lady Gaga tries to save the world. Which means that god is kind.

And here are my favorite quotable statements:
"Never second guess the power of the idea that channels kindness." (131)
"Whenever doubt surfaces, it might help to look at someone in your family or someone you admire and remember the odds they had to overcome." (220)
"You are never too young or too old for safe boundaries." (112)
&
"It takes a while to learn how to be human." (100)

“No matter how unfair or discouraging the world may seem at certain points, kindness is actually abundant at all times.”

Lady Gaga’s story is incredible. Plagued by massive insecurities and health problems, she has openly struggled with PTSD and depression from enduring years of sexual abuse and bullying. Through it all, she believes in the importance of being kind to yourself and being kind to others. She and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded the Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world a kinder and braver place. Through the years, they've collected stories of kindness, bravery and resilience from young people all over the world, proving that kindness truly is the universal language. These stories are compiled into this collection, Channel Kindness, providing a space for these youth to share their stories.

“Performing an act of kindness can redeem and heal you just as much as it can transform the person you choose to help.”

Contained in these pages is proof of a kinder, braver world envisioned by Gaga over eight years ago. These are stories from around the globe of young people performing random acts of kindness, standing up for others, and finding the quiet courage it takes to stand up for themselves. Her goal was to make kindness “cool”. To validate the emotions of young people around the world and eliminate the stigma of mental health. She believes the voice of these young people matters because they are filled with hope, compassion, and commitment to community.

“Being a kind and respectful friend includes opening your mind to other perspectives, pushing yourself to understand someone else even if you haven’t experienced the same things, and committing yourself to being there in a supportive capacity.”

These stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is about inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world.

This would make a wonderful gift to a teen struggling with anxiety, depression, or identity. It provides hope and a path to freedom through loving others and giving back.

I could not put this book down as it is such an inspirational book for many people despite mainly young people featured here, it resonates to all people from various walks of life. Lady Gaga to some may seem weird but the more I see and read about her she’s a very compassionate lady. I watched her documentary on her dealing with fibromyalgia and since then I’ve admired all she does. Not just her singing and acting but what she does through her music and her help with many people. This books contains interviews with young people who have through kindness and hope overcome many obstacles. Lady Gaga posts a support and thank you at the end of each one and she has befriended many of the ones in the book.

Their stories stem from being born with a disability; having an injury causing a disability; losing friends through suicide and the young ladies who lost their mum through suicide was particularly heartbreaking. It deals with finding your true identity too and basically never to judge what you can’t see. It’s a sad read but also a happy read when you see how they’ve overcome much of this. Recovery and kindness to themselves which is something we rarely do. We show kindness to others but how often are we kind to ourselves?

As a fellow sufferer of fibromyalgia I can empathise with this lady and especially at the end when a young lady said to her one day ‘you’re in pain”. Lady Gaga had severe pain in her hip after rehearsals and because this young lady had gone through so many painful operations her whole life she just seemed to recognise her pain. Lady Gaga went to have an MRI which indicated severe damage to her hip due to fibromyalgia and if she had not done so she would have had severe consequences. I can relate to how that feels due to now needing a hip replacement in August yet still many Drs here do not recognise fibromyalgia as a health problem despite the daily chronic pain. Yes you can look ok but inside many of us are ‘putting on a face’ because we do not want to be different nor have pity.

I think we could all learn a little from this book. Until then just show a bit of kindness and smile at someone each day. I can never get used to the Aussie greeting ‘how are you’ it means not what you think as they just walk on by but one day, just one day, just say ‘hello’ or some other more appropriate greeting it might be the only word(s) some people hear that day. When that elderly person in the supermarket or street starts chatting just take a few minutes out of your day to listen as one day we may all be that elderly person with no one else to talk to!

Let’s face it - 2020 has not been an easy year. Every day we hear stories of the impact of the pandemic on individuals, families, communities and countries. In fact, the world has been forever changed. What I choose to read right now impacts my level of positivity in today’s world. Channel Kindness, by Born This Way Foundation Reporters & Lady Gaga, is just the book I needed to remember all the good in this world.
The book, introduced by Lady Gaga, is a collection of 51 stories which emit positivity, resilience and kindness by today’s youth. Simply said, the book is uplifting and inspirational not only providing hope to today’s youth, but to all of us. The stories have been collected by Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, founded by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta, and include a diverse population of youth represented. Stories include a man who sells food and drinks to businesses via an electric golf cart, and matches these sales in food in drink to the homeless and the story of a young woman who creates a friendship advocacy program which pairs individuals with challenges with someone in their peer group. These are just two of the stories we learn about in this book.
I enjoyed the book and learning about each of the stories. This is not a book you want to binge read, however. I say this because the stories have greater meaning when the reader is allowed to reflect upon the information shared. I loved the fact that the stories told represented the most diverse population I’ve ever read. Furthermore, the individual stories often originated from adversity - bullying, mental health issues, isolation due to LGBTQ+ identification. The underlying theme of the book is that kindness provides a power to create positive change.
I listened to the audiobook edition of the book which was narrated by Lady Gaga, Alex Aide, Aysha Mahmood, Connor Long, Cynthia Germanotta, Hanna Atkinson, Mitu Yilma & Shadille Estepan. Like the authors of the stories themselves, these narrators represent a vast range of diversity which made the narration more authentic and true to the authors.

Thank you to Libro FM and their ALC program for a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This book was so hopeful, so welcoming and it left me with a smile on my face and hope for the future. There are 20+ different stories in this book from people all throughout the queer community. I am so thankful to Lady Gaga for creating the Born This Way Foundation and paving the way for a safer future for queer kids.

The ingenuity and compassion of so many teenagers and young adults in these stories makes me have hope for the future. A common theme in many of these stories was de-stigmatizing mental health illness and preventing suicide. I hope this new surge of awareness will allow more people the words to talk about their struggles and find the help/tools they need to survive and thrive.

If you need a feel good book, pick this one up.

I feel like this book would be great for someone who has a young adult struggling with bullying, it gives the next generation support and real tangible ways to help each other.

It wasn’t quite as deep as I would have liked and I felt like it would have made a great blog post or waited till they had more examples.

I can't stress this enough - this book is so much needed right now more than ever. Firstly, before I write anything more, let me quote Dua Lipa and say, "at the end of the day all I wanna say is, thank you Lady Gaga".
Secondly, I have to thank the entire Channel Kindness+BTWF team that did an amazing job with this book. I don't believe the end credits and acknowledgments do you enough justice... this is such a rare kind of book.
I'm so glad I chose to listen to its Audible version because it makes it so much more alive, like listening to people's stories is so much more powerful.
Being brave and kind is something all of us are capable of. If you are the kind of person who wants to do more in the world/planet/community/humanity/society/friends/others - this book motivates you just the right amount.
I think that hearing or reading about people sharing their stories and experiences with others is such an empowering thing.
No matter where you live in 2020, you probably could use some more kindness spreading around you. So share this book, read this book, cry, laugh, during this book, let your friends know about it, make sure people know these stories. And I promise you, you can find many more stories like these all around you if you start looking.
This read is exactly what I needed right now, and I have to say, I expected no less than that from Lady Gaga, momgerm, Maya and the BTWF.
5/5 no doubt!

❤️ “I believe that the best type of kindness is the one that inspires kindness.”❤️

🥰I read (or rather, 🎧listened🎧, to this one as my nonfiction for the month of October. I found it incredibly heartwarming and uplifting. And as a person who would like to think of herself as kind, I found myself agreeing with all of the themes and takeaways imbedded into these real-life stories of how kindness can truly transform lives.

From survivors of sexual assault, to victims of bullying or even those at risk of self-harm or suicide, there are SO many heartbreaking and beautiful stories of healing and growth that are at work within this collection to show each and every person struggling with something that they’re NOT alone.

Whether you read this or not, my biggest take away is that it’s FREE to be kind, but kindness is absolutely priceless. So JUST BE KIND, FOLKS! 🥰

This book is lovely in its message however, I could read a very similar combination of stories in a Reddit group. There was nothing that made this extraordinary or unique which pains me to say as a huge fan of Gaga and someone who actively practises the message they preach every chapter in this book. If this was released before the internet became the platform it did, I could see myself loving it but now people share their stories on YT and blogs there is nothing that surprised me or drew me in.

How I read this: Free audiobook copy received through Libro.fm

DNF @ 67%

I don't leave DNF ratings, but if I did, this book would probably get 4 stars.

I've been "currently reading" this book for what, maybe close to a year now? I've decided to just post a DNF review, because I don't think I'm actually going to finish it.

Anyway, this is like a book of TED talks on how small acts can turn into big changes for the ones receiving it, how being kind even in the smallest ways matters and how painful experiences can be transformed into something that makes community life better. It's an inspiring collection and I believe it's best in audiobook form, because the narrators are all different and they tell their own story.

The book opens with Lady Gaga bravely talking about the experiences that shaped her and her wish to bring more kindness of the world. Most of those experiences, of course, are of people not showing kindness - like the bullying she's had to endure at school and things worse than that. I was shocked to hear this, because when I was a teen and saw Gaga's videos, I always felt like she must belong to the culture of my bullies - because they loved her, and the vibe the music and videos gave me wasn't anything I could relate to, but my bullies could. So it was world-shaking for me to hear that a lot of the experiences that messed me up for life, also messed Lady Gaga up - and she's not afraid to talk about it. It's honestly something I am very thankful for her for talking about.

This book is geared towards small stories of kindness and how they can change things. How small things can have big impacts. It works as a motivator for someone who is looking to help others, but it also works as consolation stories for someone who's been disappointed by how rude, awful and unkind the world can be.

What I really liked about this audiobook, and where it excels in doing something where others only talk about it, but don't do it - is inclusivity. Every story is narrated by the person who brought it to the table, so each story brings something new. But I was especially happy to realize that for some stories, I had to switch my audiobook to a slower speed in order to be able to understand better - because the book includes a few chapters narrated by people with speech difficulties (for example, one had Down syndrome, but there were others too). I was very happy about this - many people talk about inclusivity, but how many would actually put this content into their audiobook? Because there will definitely be people who will find reasons to criticize it. We often talk about diversity and inclusivity, but for a lot of us, it ends up only talk. Not so for this book!

Some of the stories are ready powerful and touching. Like the one where the woman whose six year old was shot in a mass school shooting, talks about forgiveness and the power of it. I cried during that talk, cause it's simply impossible not to.

But in the end, I didn't finish the book because I'm a mood reader, and since all the stories are separate, they're quite fragmented, and I have trouble finishing audiobooks as it is. However, I think it's just me! It's definitely a beautiful aim and some strong content.

I thank the publisher and libro.fm for giving me a free copy of the audiobook in exchange to my honest review. This has not affected my opinion.

Rezension

Thank you Lady Gaga that you try  to make this world, to a better place. Grettings from Germany!

Alles Gute eure Jassy!

Klappentext

Meine Meinung

CW: Self harm, bullying, gun violence, sexual assault

Channel Kindness, by Born This Way Foundation Reporters & Lady Gaga come together to share stories of kindness and uplift those around them, through their daily work and shared stories. Thank you to Libro.FM and Macmillan Audio for my gifted copy through their influencer program, I enjoyed the audiobook with multiple narrators!

*Read by Lady Gaga, Cynthia Germanotta, Hanna Atkinson, Connor Long, Alex Aide, Shadille Estepan, Aysha Mahmood, and Mitu Yilma

This audiobook is the first time I have listened to a story narrated by a person with Down syndrome (FINALLY!), and I loved the diversity all around in the narrators, and story selections. The concept of sharing stories of kindness is uplifting, although the stories themselves touch on moments of hardship and darkness within each of the authors lives. Often times, the stories made my heart hurt, and took me a moment to process. These stories will stick with you, and give you hope for the next generation.

A few quotes that stuck with me:
"I'm okay with not being okay all the time"
"Please try to be a friend to yourself no matter how hard that may be"
Ways to support someone's mental health, say "Let me know how I can support you. I believe you. It's real and you can get through this"

As interesting as the book is with the audiobook format, it may have been easier to distinguish between the stories reading a physical copy, or doing an immersive read (audiobook and physical copy together). A bit of the story read like bio descriptions of each non-profit organization involved (which are wonderful organizations) but I would have enjoyed hearing more of a personal connection to each organization.

Thank you to Gaga and her amazing team, and all of the storytellers for sharing their stories, and spreading kindness throughout hard times! You are strong, resilient, and seen.

CHANNEL KINDNESS

This was such an inspiring collection of stories. Some were definitely tough to read as a lot of those featured had been through some truly awful things. But reading about how they overcame and even used those experiences to do good in the world was amazing. I especially loved how each one included a list of similar organizations and resources you could check out if you were interested in joining in that cause.

Channel Kindness by Lady GaGa
Channel Kindness is such a powerful book with many simple yet powerful stories about how kindness, empathy, connection and community can change our world.
This book features short stories from so many diverse young voices, as well as essays from Born This Way Foundation co-founders Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta.
If you have ever wondered if there is any humanity left on earth then the answer is yes. How do i know? Well, the answer is in this book. I absolutely loved this book a very inspiring read and one that I'll reread again.

I don't put stars on my reviews.

CW: there is mention of rape, suicide, and school shootings. Despite this, it's an uplifting book full of examples showing that kindness really makes a difference.

Channel Kindness is a book everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.

In 2012, Lady Gaga and her Mother founded the non-profit 'Born This Way Foundation' which helps to support the wellness of young people. The stories in the book have been written by young people and adults which cover topics from Kindness, Animal Rescue, Loss, Heartbreak, Grief and Friendship. They are often written from the first-person perspective and at times can be quite raw.
This book comes with a trigger warning - be conscious of the reader's age - as the stories in my opinion should not be shared with younger children - they are aimed at teens and above.

I had to stop reading at times - in particular Scarlett Lewis's story which discusses her six-year-old son's death at Sandy Hook. As a mum of young children, I felt crushing pain for Scarlett and I admire her strength and resilience for choosing forgiveness. This is a story that I haven't been able to stop thinking about and it is on that I feel will stay with me for a very long time.

an essay collection full of generosity, hope, inclusion, & kindness. brief synopsis: essentially the 2020s installment of ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ from an earlier era. noteworthy quotation: “coffee- that’s my cup of kindness of choice.” ☕️

To be honest I don’t remember 98% of this book. Most of it went in one ear and out the other. While listening there were a few stories that gave me pause but nothing that was Earth shattering.

I think I should have read a physical copy and read just one story here and there. I might have absorbed and appreciated it more.
