Told from both sides of the gender gap in alternating chapters, a tale of modern romance follows a young woman into the London singles scene in search of true love. Reprint.
This is one of my all-time favorite books!!! It tells a love story from two different perspectives, namely the two main characters points of view. Jack's interpretation is written by Emlyn Rees, and Amy's viewpoint is told by Josie Lloyd. In real life, they are married, which I can imagine, makes for some interesting debates around the dinner table.
A rainy weekend trip down memory lane - picking one of my go-to easy read books from 21 years ago. It hasn’t necessarily aged well - Jack’s attitude to Amy not sleeping with him even though he bought her dinner is a bit off - but like a Macca’s sundae I devoured it all the same.
All in all, great stupid romance read. Quick, somewhat humourous. Wouldn't race out to read it but had fun reading on a whim!
Both main characters are crazy and not healthy people. Perhaps it is for this reason they deserve each other. Jack likes Amy because she is straightforward and he is very horny. Amy likes Jack because he goes down on her unprompted. Jack gets mad at Amy for lying multiple times, yet never really gets caught in his own lie about being a successful artist with money. Amy dumps Jack because he cheated on her. In reality a woman started giving him a BJ when he was asleep (thus it actually being sexual assault!!). Misogyny etc every other page minimum really. 90s vibes!!
Thank you Moonlight Tops Hut of Paparoa Track fame! Read in one afternoon - hard to stop reading when getting up is immensely painful 🤡
Oh man. I read this after coming across it some 26 years after the first time I read it. I was about 14 and it was one of the first 'grown-up' non-classics I ever read and I really liked it so I thought I'd get a lovely sense of nostalgia picking it up again. And I sort of did, but I also thought it was terrible. I wouldn't say that's entirely down to the writing itself, or the authors. It's very much a product of its time, in a bad way. Compared to something like Bridget Jones is a product of its time in a good way. And I think that's because Bridget Jones is very reflective of the 90s era in terms of what was going on in society at the time, the energy of the decade and the window dressing - the reliance on answer phones, the smoking etc, whereas Come Together is centred on a very outdated nineties concept of gender stereotyping - he's a commitment-phobic good time guy who charms women into bed then moves onto the next one, he's cocky and attractive and uses phrases like 'uber-babe' in a non-ironic way (not that ironic would be much better), and she's a adorably awkward but sexy every woman who veers between girl-power 'feminist' to googly eyed smitten kitten who will stand her best friend up to placate her boyfriend. Bridget Jones shared some of these qualities but she felt like a real person, who had these traits because that's the way she was built rather than to fit some nineties romcom stereotype. And I think because the book relies so heavily on this concept - she's a nineties girl, he's a nineties guy so therefore they cannot communicate effectively with each other and hijinks ensue, it just feels unbearably dated now we've moved on to a world where that kind of gender stereotyping is cringworthy to many of us. I was unable to like either of the main characters, I wouldn't be friends with either of them. There wasn't enough focus on developing a compelling plot so it really lived or died on the characters and they were both annoying. In terms of writing, I would say it was fine, I think - it's a little hard for me to judge as it was littered with words like 'funky' and 'groovy', which again I find dated in the wrong way. I did get my nostalgia hit I guess, it just wasn't enough to overcome the shortcomings of the novel. Back to Bridget Jones I guess...
I love this book and have read it a few times since I first bought it in the early 2000s. It's written by a real-life couple and the chapters alternate between Jack and Amy. Jack is likeable but not loveable - he lies, he cadges off his friend, he is lazy and he has a huge fear of relationships. Typical 20-something man. Amy has different problems - she's a bit pathetic and desperate for a man, procrastinates about her career, drinks and smokes too much and regrets everything she does and says. Amy's looking for a boyfriend and finds Jack. Because they're both flawed, the whole story is totally realistic and you really want them to work things out and be happy together. You read a book like this and you know what's going to happen at the end, but this didn't make it any less enjoyable. Jack and Amy don't have an easy time of it - all sorts of things get in the way, and that keeps you turning the pages. It nails that feeling of being in London after you've graduated, not having much money or any clue about what to do with your life, and all of the falling in and out of love that happened in your 20s. And reading it again now is great - there's stuff in there about London in the 1990s that makes me smile. How pubs used to be smoky. The music and films and TV. The way we talked and behaved. Weekends away to Brighton. Disastrous holidays to Greece.
Much like a romantic comedy, I found this entertaining. It was a light read, and I finished it in just a couple days. Even though the plot was fairly predictable, I kept wanting to read more. I really liked having the back and forth between the two characters narrating the chapters and being able to see both sides of the story.
It actually pains me to give this book only 3 stars. It has been one of my favourites for so long (20 years?)! It’s been probably 7 or 8 years since I read it, and apparently I’ve changed my views on the world a lot since then. Reading it now, Jack was a dick and Amy needed therapy. Both of them were really immature. Pretty disappointing to be honest, but I guess we all grow up sometimes.

I loved this book, it was so funny - this is my second time reading it, first time in year 7 and a bit confused as to what the innuendos meant now I’m in year 11 I understand it more and it’s just funny,I shipped H and Matt and I want a book on their relationship

Bought this when it came out and thought it was brilliant. Re-read it now and still like it a lot. It’s very nineties and very British. An excellent feel-good book.
Boh...
I really don’t know what to say about this one. As I was reaching the end I wondered how they would fit in a huge amount of resolution and then BAM! it was over and I felt slightly cheated by it. I needed an epilogue.
I see that there are two books that follow on and although I’m curious to see what happened after this book, I’m not sure that I’m prepared to invest in this series, feeling so let down as I do by the ending.
And it’s a shame, because it was actually very easy to read. The characters were well shaped and easily recognisable, even appealing in some ways. The friends were a bit of a let down when the main characters were in need of support, but generally the whole group seemed likeable enough. The narrative helped you to picture yourself in their shoes and certainly described the surroundings well.
I did like the back and forth between Amy and Jack chapters, but felt that they could have been provided in smaller more bite size chunks, as it was difficult to find a place to put the book down when necessary. I also think it would have helped it flow more if the chapters had been broken in to him and her chronologically to save the going over what had happened having skipped passed it earlier, just to fit the format. Funnily enough, it didn’t feel like it was written by two different people, they obviously have a very similar writing style or influenced each other.
It is very heavily about sex and that’s all they seem to want to start with, lacking emotionality. As someone that has wanted a relationship since I was about 12, I find it a bit crass to be so obsessive about shagging like this, but once the first couple of chapters have been and gone, it became a bit more like my sort of thing. Certainly there was more romantic elements.
This is a very British version of a Hallmark Made For TV Film story.
Having written this review, I don’t feel that I will buy either of the next books, but rather put this one on eBay. Maybe I might find time for the whole series at a later date, but I have far more interesting things to read between now and then I think.
Sayangnya, suatu kejujuran malah merusak hubungan mereka.
This was actually a surprisingly solid novel for 'love story/chick lit/whatever.' It was written by a couple who each wrote the character's chapter (alt chapters) which was made all the cooler when I found out that the authors, who only met weeks before embarking on this project together, actually got married.
Okay so it starts off with Jack. And Jack is a bloke (this is England) and he's an artist and kind of barely making it by living with his mate (Matt) in Matt's house. Jack is the kind of guy who likes to have one night stands and has only had one committed relationship which died 2 years back.
Then we meet in chapter 2, Amy who is a friend of a friend and meets Jack and they sort of hit it off except that night she tells Jack that she's into Matt. And we should also mention that they've drank oodles of alcohol and the next morning she laments saying any such thing because of course she has fallen for him.
This premise is so old. And I would usually pass over any story like this because of the eye rolling. But this was done in a fun way. Maybe it was because it was legit funny. Maybe it was because it wasn't predictable. (do they get together in the end? it's not as sorted as you might think) Also it was written in the 90's so there was some nostalgia that I enjoyed.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for some not mindless but very easy fun reading that doesn't take the reader as a fool.
I made it through two thirds of this book before deciding that was enough for me. I picked it up for the nostalgia of reading some Josie Lloyd books in my teenage years but unfortunately I was left disappointed by this one.
I like the structure of a love story told from both character's perspectives and the opportunity it provides for understanding how miscommunication can so easily occur in the early days of a new relationship. However, I didn't find Jack or Amy particularly interesting or likeable so it was difficult to root for them and their connection. Jack's thoughts frequently crossed the line into sexism and misogyny which reflected how badly this book has aged and was one of the main factors in my decision to stop reading it, as it just felt uncomfortable.
Interesting concept, but... I'm currently about 50 pages in and getting a bit annoyed with this book. Neither of the main characters have really grabbed me yet and at this point don't really care how they end up together in the end (I'm betting they will). They both seem way too sex-obsessed. May give it another 50 pages before I decide whether or not to give it up in favor of another book...
Well, this one's not making the cut. I got about 100 pages in and ended up picking up a book at the library that held my attention so much better! Read that one instead (Girls in Pants by Ann Brashares) and don't have any desire to pick this one back up.
All’inizio ho riso molto. Poi ho continuato a leggere sorridendo.
