“I don’t just want to survive, I want to live.”
An Un-put-downable premise! I cannot wait for this series to grow. What an unexpected and thrilling discovery, filled me with an overwhelming sensation of excitement and dread, the harbinger of something dark and threatening. Threads of chills ran through my entire body! Some of the answers were simply fantastical, and unbelievable. Insightful, bloody. Page turner about the corruption of morality and warped thinking patterns. Next in line Goliath Emerges #3!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and my review is entirely voluntary.

The great ship, Goliath, had a mission to cleanse certain planets of organic life. Unfortunately, although it had been prevented from completing the mission, it was sentient and grew bitter at not finishing the task. For thousands of years, it thought about its mission. The last Revocater vessel had interfered by casting a massive portal shattering the crystal and destroying any hope of it navigating to the target system 5118208. But at least the last Revocater had perished in the process, ripped apart by projecting such a powerful gateway. So Goliath continued to wait.

Hudson Powell’s former Relic Guardian Force boss, Logan Griff, wants him dead badly enough to hire mercenaries, Cutler Wendell and Tory Bellona, to track him down. Hudson had treated Tory fairly when she was relic-hunting an alien ship; so having a sense of honor also, she avoided killing him. Now yet another man is following him, sent by the black market dealer who wanted the guy to pick Hudson’s pocket and steal a crystal Hudson had refused to sell to him – a reward had been offered on the dark web dealer board. He went back to the dealer and, with the help of a taser pistol, worked out a deal for the crystal, the reward offered to the pick-pocket who had followed him, and removal of his name from the dark web. It was nice to have no one else chasing after him for the moment! And he had some money this way to perhaps buy a starship for his new business of becoming a relic hunter where he can make a good living scavenging the alien hulks scattered throughout the planets.

But it’s difficult to start such a business when you have little money and no starship to get there. Fortunately he finds the perfect partner in Liberty Devan, a streetwise, snarky genius ship’s mechanic/engineer he met on the sales lot that sold starships which, despite being junk, he could still not afford. But his honesty intrigued her and she told him to put down the money he had as a down payment on a ship she was working on, then they would go relic-hunting and get the rest to buy it together.

But with the good comes the bad. And the adventure never stops as they encounter an alien intelligence that warns them of a threat to humanity! This just might be a bigger project than he had anticipated!

With this book giving the reader a jump-start on the existence of the huge ship ready to destroy Earth, the reader is immediately roused to attention and eagerly devouring the story line that follows. Goliath appears undefeatable, with the power of a star. Can our heroes tackle such a seemingly-undefeatable foe? Grab your copy and dig in for what promises to be an unforgettable adventure!

Book 2 sees Hudson in need of a ship as he wants to become a Relic Hunter. It is whilst looking for a ship that he happens to run across a young woman, Liberty Devan, who has the perfect deal for him. Liberty has a ship that she needs a pilot for, and wants to escape the planet she is on, to go and ‘Live’ her life and go and explore, to go and become a Relic Hunter as well.
This second book in the series explores the beginning of the new relationship between Liberty and Hudson, and without giving too much away, looks at how they get the funds they need to get their ship, and get set up.
However, things are not all that easy for them, for the entire they are trying to do their thing, they (well Hudson really), are being hunted constantly by a Bounty Hunter, Cutler Wendell. Cutler is one of those Assassins that has lost his soul and is just a robot now, speaks with a dead robotic voice and seems to have all the emotional range of a Paper Cup. With him is Tory Bellona, much to Hudson’s surprise, the ‘Relic Hunter’ he came across in book 1, and saved her life.
It’s here that Liberty works out that Hudson has a severe crush on Tory, but that there is also something reciprocated from Tory’s end to.
What follows is a fascinating book of high action, witty humour, some captivating and engaging combat scenes in a variety of locations, including on the surface, in space, and even more interesting, in the hulk of the crashed ships.
The world building is just intense, Ogden has gone all out with developing these amazing planets, each of them with their own backstory, and a crashed alien hulk that is being picked clean for its precious parts and technology, that is then being sold either legally or on the black market.
As with Book 1, the RGF, (Relic Guardian Force), is supposed to protect what is taken, making sure it is catalogued properly and sold correctly. What really happens is that the RGF are a bunch of crooked thieves, and because they are not paid overly well (hey it’s a government job), so they supplement their pay by stealing from the Relic Hunters, “Illegally” taxing them when they have to announce their findings. This goes all the way up, with Senior RGF officers getting kick backs from Junior officers, who then get favours down the track in return. Great for the RGF, not so great for the Relic Hunters. This is even worse for an ex RGF officer as NO one ever leaves the RGF – as Hudson soon finds out the hard way.
Ogden has gone full out, with not only a fully developed Galactic System linked by an Intergalactic System, each planet with a crashed wreck that no one can explain (yet), a fascinating Relic Hunter, Tomb Raider style set of people all leaping around these hulks trying to eke out a living (Imagine the opening scenes of Star Wars Force Awakens with Rey bouncing around in the hulks of the Star Destroyers), then add in a psychopathic Bounty Hunter and his attractive, but equally (if not more) psychopathic Side Kick that seem to turn up at every opportunity, along with the King of Sleeve and Filth, Logan Griff, who has a grudge to settle, and you have a sequel that is better than the original.
Ogden’s character work in this book is just brilliant, Hudson is outstanding as the optimistic ex-RGF officer, come Relic Hunter, naïve in a couple of ways, but not so pig headed that he is willing to blow off help when it is offered, in fact, quite the opposite, and this is how the partnership starts between he and Liberty. Liberty Devan is a young, wild at heart girl, who has had to survive on the streets since the was 13yrs old, and being a pretty young girl, all alone, she has done well. She is a skilled mechanic, but she has other a multitude of other skills that surprise everyone at various points and make for a fun story (and a great character – there would be a fantastic side story of her growing up!).
The other really fascinating dynamic in this book is the 3 way between Tory Bellona, Logan Griff and Cutler Wendell. Griff has hired Cutler to kill Hudson, and Tory works for Cutler, so is reluctantly helping Cutler. This leads to some interesting things, as Tory obviously does not want to kill Hudson, and has a protective streak towards Liberty. Of course, she absolutely detests Griff, she looks at him like something you might find in a public toilet.
Overall, this is an exceptional sequel to book 1, and is a great lead in to the rest of the series. If you had any interest in book 1, you will love book 2. It is absolutely worth reading, not just this, but the remainder of the series.

“Orion Rises” (Star Scavengers #2) by GJ Ogden. Genre: Space Opera. Location: San Francisco, California, Earth to the outer reaches of space. Time: Future.-
-
The Series: The ancient spaceship Goliath slept for eons. Its mission was to destroy all humans. The ships it destroyed were scattered across many planets. Relic Hunters scavenged the ruined ships for alien tech-a dangerous business that occasionally brought great riches. Now disabled in uncharted space, Goliath can only wait until someone finds its missing crystal.-
In book 1, our hero Hudson Powell is fired from the Relic Guardian Force, finds a mysterious crystal, and is hunted by assassins.-
-
Book 2: Orion Rises-
When Hudson has the crystal evaluated, it sends a silent message throughout space, and Goliath awakens. Unaware of this, Hudson needs a spaceship to investigate the mysterious crystal. Along with the spaceship comes Liberty Devon, teenage ace mechanic and now co-captain. They head to planet Bach Two to look for alien treasure and the crystal fragment. Once again they are pursued by corrupt RGF officer Logan Griff and his hired assassins Cutler Wendell and Tory Barrett. After being robbed by Griff’s group, Hudson and Liberty discover a new portal and planet, and accidentally activate an alien artificial intelligence.-
-
Hudson continues to be “the good guy”, but author Ogden has him learning that he must be prepared to fight back. Liberty adds a sense of hard scifi to the book with her knowledge of tech systems and ability to cobble items together. Happily, Ogden keeps Liberty’s hard scifi discussions to a minimum, making the book accessible to a wider range of readers.-
-
The Series: Space Operas include: melodrama✔️, risk-taking space adventures✔️, chivalric romance✔️, outer space locations✔️, faster-than-light travel✔️, futuristic weapons and technology✔️, galactic empires✔️, interstellar wars✔️, and aliens✔️. Yep, this is a Space Opera. Mash together a bit of “Firefly” and “Indiana Jones”. Add in some “Last Starfighter” vibes, and an Enemies to Lovers trope. It’s a romp across space full of villains, heros, aliens, and artificial intelligences. It’s a David and Goliath space opera. (to be exact, it’s a Hudson and Goliath space opera 🤣) And because it fits its genre so well, it’s 4 stars from me.🌵📚👩🏼‍🦳”

In Orion Rises the story really steps it up, the characters come into their own and an intriguing world continues to develop. This second installment builds and improves on the first and is well worth it! If you haven’t read Guardian Outcast, do yourself a favor and start there!

Without spoiling anything I enjoyed the characters growing into their own the most. I feel like Ogden always writes engaging and entertaining characters but I was missing some of the banter and relationships in the first one. Hudson develops and maintains connections in this book and the supporting cast strengthens tremendously.

I love the world this series creates where mysterious treasure is out there and some risk their lives to go after it! The deeper mysteries started to be hinted at here, though I want to know more!

Overall, if you like sci fi and Adventure read this series! I’ve really enjoyed the ride so far. I look for a series to get stronger as it goes, not start strong and falter and lose my interest and this one is absolutely doing that.

Fast-paced, action filled installment to the series. Hudson is trying on his tough-guy relic hunter persona and learning how it fits to various results. New friends, new enemies - but don't worry, the old ones are incredibly persistent as well. There were a few edge-of-your-seat scenes where I couldn't flip the kindle pages fast enough, and others where I laughed out loud.

The main characters are truly likable, the enemies despicable. The story line feels a little contrived at points, like the pieces fell together a bit too conveniently - but the gestalt works as a highly entertaining story and after all, stories are told about the people in center of happenings. And in many of the scenarios in this book, it was skill as much as luck or fate that brought our heroes through.

This is book 2 of a series that really needs to be read in order. After all the teasers in this book, I am looking forward to seeing more of Goliath in the next - the pieces are coming together.

Having been kicked out of his former job, our hero is out on his own but his enemies still hold grudges and plan to settle things permanently. Things are going to get sticky real quickly.

This is book two of the series, but it works well as a standalone. You will be missing some of the backstory, but all the essentials are presented here.

The book is well written, easy to read and just plain fun. Things for our hero go from bad to worse pretty quickly as the story moves at a good pace. The characters are well developed, particularly our hero who is, of course, the star of the show. Even better, there is character growth along the way along with an evolving plot line which keeps everything interesting throughout. Overall, a very enjoyable story and I look forward to watching the series developed.

Highly recommended.

Orion Rises had the potential to be an exciting space adventure, but it falls short in several areas. The main character, Hudson Powell, feels like he’s stuck in a cycle of bad decisions. He constantly lets his enemies off the hook, which leads to predictable and frustrating outcomes. While there are strong female characters who handle the action well, Hudson himself comes off as too naive and passive, especially in dangerous situations where you'd expect more growth.

The story can feel repetitive, with Hudson making the same mistakes and failing to learn from them. If you’re looking for a protagonist who grows and adapts quickly, this might not be the series for you.

However, the world-building is solid, and there are glimpses of potential for later books if you're willing to stick with it.

The first story was a great set up for the series as we get to meet Hudson and learn about how and why he gets into relic hunting. Book 2 starts soon after the first one ends and is full of action, mystery and Hudson and Liberty trying to survive. The plan was to hunt relics, earn enough for a ship and continue hunting relics. But of course Hudson has as much luck ad the first book and then starts the real fun. I laughed and groaned through out the story, but was wildly entertained. The characters were both fun to like and hate. Add in the crazy ship and end up with this fun story.

This series just keeps getting better. Hudson has now teamed up with Liberty, a ship mechanic turned scavenger (she is a darling, think Kaylee from Firefly). Together, they need to scavenge a few valuable objects in order to buy a ship. This is becoming increasingly difficult since Cutler and Tory are after them - and the best at their job - and Griff wants Hudson gone.

They are caught and escape several times and in the process make several interesting discoveries. 1. The crystal that is currently in Hudson's possession somehow leads them to discover new portals. 2. There is still an operational alien ship set on destroying earth and a shapeshifting alien out to stop it. If only he/she/it can get Hudson and Liberty to help. Everyone is after Hudson now and it seems it's only a matter of time before his luck runs out.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and have reviewed it willingly.

Orion Rises

On the one hand these books read like a junior adventure story and they're short, very short! Do not expect book one, or two or even three to be anything less than an introduction to the next chapter.
On the other hand, it has been interesting reading so far, so, I suppose I'm going to look for book three in the series.
Another thing, it has been well edited, perhaps because there is so little of it. It's not filled with rediculous spelling and grammar faults.

At the edge of my seat.

Thought this 2nd book was as great as the 1st. Hate having to wait for the 3rd. It read too fast and knowing that I was getting to the end. I made an effort to slow down. Loved the originality and the characters.

Repetitive at Times

I really like the theme of this series, and I like most of the characters. My main complaint is how the bad guys constantly find our heroes with no explanations on how they kept finding them. Seemed like lazy writing.
