“One decision can change the course of an entire civilization. One discovery can change your life.”
“In actuality, we are merely two unique intelligences, neither one more alien than the other.”
Gripping, engaging, and captivating! This series is a definite must read! It gets better with each new premise. If you like a riveting worldbuilding, plot twists, and subterfuge you’re likely to enjoy this series. Goliath had been a seed carrier – a titanic, sentient vessel that had been created to spread life throughout the galaxy, but now it’s set to destroy what it sowed. Its a unique, unpredictable and fast-paced novel that’s in equal parts unsettling and exciting. The characters are fun and resilient at the same time, realistic in their approach, witty dialogue interlaced with dynamic action. Can’t wait to read Union’s End #4!

In Book 2, the reader learns that the great ship, Goliath, had a mission to cleanse certain planets of organic life. Although it had been prevented from completing the mission, it was sentient and grew bitter at not finishing the task. For thousands of years, it thought about its mission. The last Revocater vessel had interfered with the mission and destroyed any hope of its navigating to the target system 5118208. But Goliath thought that the last Revocater had perished in the process, ripped apart by projecting such a powerful gateway. So Goliath continued to wait until it was time to proceed again.

“Morphus” was the name that the human female, Liberty Devan, had assigned to it. It followed the human vessel to the fourth planet of System 5118208. It wasn’t really an individual because it had been just one of hundreds of artificial constructs created to operate the Revocaters. They had all been identical and with one purpose which was to stop Goliath. Yet all except Morphus had failed. Because that made it therefore unique, it had earned an individual name. So, Morphus accepted its new designation and adopted the idea of its individuality. Now it would require an adjustment to its programming, and in order to defeat Goliath again, it had to change and evolve.

By now, everyone has heard of Hudson and Liberty’s unique ability to discover new portals. So the rest of the relic hunters want to share that good fortune! Hudson and Liberty take the Orion to a new portal world after leaving Deimos Station near Mars. Logan Griff, along with the mercenaries Cutler Wendell and Tory Bellona, are still chasing after them. And Griff wants more than just their heads this time -- he wants the secret to finding new portals too. Little do they realize, however, that a mighty force is returning, bent on the total annihilation of humanity. The name of the force is Goliath, and it’s unstoppable!

The relic hunters’ greed seems almost a non-issue compared to the huge ship ready to destroy Earth! Goliath appears undefeatable, with the power of a star. Can our heroes tackle such a seemingly-undefeatable foe? Will they have help from an unexpected source, assuming Morphus, “just one of hundreds of artificial constructs created to operate the original Revocaters”, can change and evolve in time to meet Goliath in battle? Grab your copy and dig in for what promises to be an unforgettable adventure!

I highly recommend this Series " Star Scavenger " to any one who is a fan of fast paced Syfy .

The battle continues , decent versus scum , with a chance for the death of

all life in the galaxy .

Except the scum are just a small part of the problem . This one was a one shot,

Read it all at once , Page Turner .

I was gratefully allowed to read this for free as an ARC reader . Looking forward to #4

In Book 2, Hudson Powell meets someone who is going to change his life forever. Whilst looking for a ship, he comes across a young mechanic, Liberty Devan, who has actually fixed up her own ship, just without the knowledge of the shipyards owner, a sleezy used ship salesman called Swinsler (imagine the worst used car salesman, then double it) In book 2, we saw Liberty and Hudson come together, their initial struggles for the money to get the ship, meeting Ma, as well as several other adventures that will set their friendship for life.
Of course, their biggest discovery was the crystal, and Liberty’s device that allows them to ‘See’ and ‘Open’ Portals to new Portal Worlds. Book 2 was called ‘Orion Rises’ as it saw the Liberty and Hudson come together and the final goal of getting their ship, the ‘Orion’, operational, and thus the freedom, and ability to do whatever they both wanted. During this story, Liberty and Hudson become more than friends, they become like Family to each other.
In Book 3, the two of them get the opportunity to test out Liberty’s device, and discover not only a new Portal World, but they discover that there are many more Portals that have yet to be discovered and opened. More importantly, they discover (I don’t want to give too much away here), an entity that is related to the crashed ships, and this actually opens up a whole new set of fascinating story lines, as well as allowing the Author to develop and explain so much more of the back story and world building that has gone into his series.
It is amazing the incredible depth that Ogden has gone into with the multiple different organisations (CET, MP, RGF, the Relic Hunters, as well as just each of the different Portal Worlds, Mars and Earth, all with between a few hundred to several billion on a planet, but each given an incredible level of detail. It just gives the story so much more depth, makes it that much more realistic, and engaging, makes it totally captivating. Ogden has truly captured the scope and grandeur of what a full-on Sci-Fi Space Opera should look like.
Of course, the best part of his work is still his Characters, with Hudson being just brilliant as the Main Character, telling us most of the story from his view point. His character is so completely true to itself, in that Ogden has created this Guy who has a strong morale compass and set of values, he is a pretty good pilot, but there are times that he can be a bit naïve about some aspects of the greater universe (especially when it comes to the seedier sides of the Universe), and yet, this only reinforces the character, as this is the type of person he is, he just wouldn’t know stuff like that, as he would never have gotten involved with it. Unlike someone such as Tory Bellona, who whilst not necessarily a bad person, due to her situation, her upbringing and circumstances, has seen a lot of the seedier parts of the galaxy, and more to the point, has participated in it. Tory is easily one of the best characters in the book as although she teeters on that knife edge between being a good person, or a bad one, she does enough things to tip the balance in her favour, and she is really likeable as well. Plus the cross of MacGyver, Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, all rolled into one, makes her pretty cool as far as skill sets, with the old fashioned 6 Shooter that she is just deadly with, the close combat skills, the seemingly endless supply of skills to solve situations, and the ability to pilot starships that would put Wedge Antilles to shame.
There are numerous other Characters – Liberty is just exceptional, Griff is a total sleazeball, but you have to admire his tenacity, and his cockroach like ability to survive just about any situation. Cutler Wendell is another fascinating character, with his emotionless personality and cold serial killer detachment.
This is a really extraordinary book in the series, in that Hudson gets to learn the true nature of the threat that they are facing. Hudson and Liberty, having opened up the new portal world and thinking that they have the chance to spend some time picking over the planet before they will get too many visitors, are instead set upon by Griff, Cutler, and his sidekick Tory Bellona.
Griff takes out his vengeance on both of them, leaving Hudson with nothing, taking the Crystal, and worse, taking Liberty, selling her to an organisation known as ‘The Council’, a ruthless and powerful crime syndicate that runs basically everything in the galaxy that has to do with crime, especially the really bad stuff like trafficking in slaves.
However, it is here that Liberty meets an unexpected ally and friend, Tobin, as well as some other allies.
This book becomes a multi-faceted story with Hudson going after Liberty, but encountering Morphus, the entity they discovered, and learning all sorts of things – and changing his mind forever.
Liberty is captured, but is determined to escape with her new found allies.
Griff, Cutler and Tory continue with their very weak and fragile alliance, and it is just hilarious watching this unfold.
This is a clever, creative, and exceptionally well told story that you just can’t put down, each episode in the saga just gets better and better.
If you love a great read, with fantastic, well thought out, powerful, gritty and realistic characters, outstanding storylines, with rich, in-depth world building, then this is not only a great story, but it is what you always want in a good read – it is just a lot of fun to. You won’t be disappointed!

Serviceable action adventure, with no subtlety

I am not liking this book. Action/adventure science fiction -- it seems right up my alley. But the writing is somewhat immature to me; too much description... And those descriptions are obvious, excessive, emotional, and manipulative. I feel like the author is twirling evil mustaches and tipping black hats. Oh yeah, and the atmosphere is corrupt Badlands Space cowboys. Ugh, NO SUBTLETY WHATSOEVER.

It's a shame because the actual story is intriguing enough with the disappeared mysterious alien cultures, or the human space exploration that is entirely dependent on those alien artifacts and technologies. Still, the characters and atmosphere are just too simplistic. And the repetitive, stupid writing just kills me. Why does it take 2-3 lines to describe every simple idea or action?! I was so exhausted and frustrated by this tendency throughout the story.

Even though the book opened with action, I can say that it finally gets to the good part about midway through the story! All of the main actors seem to be together, including the main bad guy who is finally awoken.

Yeah, the technological action, badass characters working together with respectable levels of intelligence, and world ending stakes eventually kick in, making the story worthwhile. I read to the end and might pickup the sequel to see how it all turns out.

Hudson and Liberty are in trouble when they are finally caught by Griff, Cutler, and Tory. Even Tory seems to be unable to rescue them this time despite her apparent crush on Hudson. But then, Tory's mad at Cutler ever since he nearly left her on the last planet, so who knows what that will lead her to do in the future.

The crystal in Griff's possession, Liberty hauled off to be sold as a slave, and Hudson nearly dead with his broken down (sabotaged) ship and no way to fix it seems hopeless, but Morpheus comes to the rescue and is able to fix up both Hudson and his ship. But how will Hudson be able to find Liberty? How will Liberty escape (because we all know she isn't going to just accept her fate and wait around to be rescued)? On a related note, I'm loving Liberty's new "rich boy" friend and his nonchalant attitude about being captured - please let him remain part of the story!

The action doesn't look like it's going to let up any time soon, and with the odds stacked against Hudson, well, I guess nothing has really changed. But I'm still looking forward to what happens next...and dying to know when Tory finally switches sides. Even knowing her backstory, I don't think she has a strong enough reason to stay with Cutler after all that's happened in this book. We will see.

I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author and have reviewed it willingly.

Our team has a talent for making discoveries, but of course everyone wants to use that for their own purposes. Being in high demand is not always good.

This is book three of the series, but it works pretty well as a standalone. You will be missing some of the backstory, but all the essentials are presented here.

The book is well written, easy to read and just plain fun. Things seem to go from bad to worse pretty quickly and it won't let up any time soon. This fast pace keeps things moving and the reader guessing, so it becomes a real page turner in no time. It helps that the characters are well developed grow along the way. Overall, a very enjoyable story and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Highly recommended.

This book takes a bit of a darker turn as Hudson and Liberty find their path derailed by none other than Griff and friends. It's not just their fate on the line though! Jumping from one danger to another and finding help in unexpected places along the way, this fast paced story is one you won't want to put down!

This is book 3 of 5 in the Star Scavenger series and though there is enough information for the books to be read as standalones, they really should be read in order as each tells a separate and important piece of the larger story. Speaking of which, they are running out of time, and at risk is nothing less than the continuing existence of mankind. What is the bigger threat? Goliath or human greed?

And I thought book 2 was good but this one was even better. It ramped up the action adventure, and outright craziness. Of course new and old bad guys show up as Hudson and Liberty have to stay ahead of them all. Things go sideways but the story was engaging and hard to put down. I had t see how Hudson and Liberty would survive and get out of the danger they end up in. And could not wait to see what else they figure out about the universe and portals Just a great read that drew me in and kept me reading to the end.

Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the action sequences became predictable, incurred by obviously stupid decisions of the main characters. I mean, the antagonists should have been shot and eliminated early in the series. That would have injected a new set of bad guys and made the story less stale by the 4th book. Other than that, I actually like this series and will be reading more from this author.

Goliath Emerges.

I'd very much like to see the end of this series, not so much to finish it, but to see what the finish actually is. To another future reader, there is an awful lot of seeking some ultimatium from the maximatius in-between the story. Off hand, I'd say that the author has a good story but is struggling a bit with his audience.

Goliath Emerges

Hudson is not whole. He needs to find Liberty and with the help of Morphius find the crystal. He also needs to take down Griff and Cutler and hopefully with the help of Tori be free of them. Only then will Hudson feel whole

Seriously couldn't keep reading. If you have someone always getting into situations of there own disastrous decisions and then having them constantly bailed out by someone else who is willing to do the wet work when they aren't, I just hope they end up dead so I don't have to keep going.

Great read.

I don't usually review past the 1st in a series, that being said. Wow! Love the characters and the fast pace.

These books are 2 steps forward one step back predictable. Good thing happens, bad thing pushes back. Rinse, lather, repeat. It helps if you're impressed by people drinking whiskey.

“Goliath Emerges”(Star Scavengers #3) by GJ Ogden. Genre: Space Opera. Location: San Francisco, California, Earth to the outer reaches of space. Time: Future.-

The Series: The ancient spaceship Goliath slept for eons. Its mission was to destroy all humans. The ships it destroyed were scattered across many planets. Relic Hunters scavenged the ruined ships for alien tech-a dangerous business that occasionally brought great riches. Now disabled in uncharted space, Goliath can only wait until someone finds its missing crystal.-
In book 1, our hero Hudson Powell is fired from the Relic Guardian Force, finds a mysterious crystal, and is hunted by assassins.-
In book 2, Hudson and young co-captain Liberty start relic hunting while dodging assassins.-
-
Book 3: Goliath Emerges
As Hudson and Liberty head to a new portal world, Logan Griff and assassins Cutler Wendell and Tory Bellona chase them to steal the portal-finding crystal. Liberty is captured and sold to the galaxy’s deadliest criminal gang. The alien shape-shifting artificial intelligence known as Morphus agrees to help Hudson rescue Liberty, if Hudson helps fight Goliath.-
-
Tory Bellona, assassin, plays a bigger role. She provides unpredictable and stealthy help to Hudson and Liberty, but they can never be sure of her. By increasing her role, the author adds a “morally grey” counterpart to Hudson’s overwhelming “goodness”.-
-
The Series: Space Operas include: melodrama✔️, risk-taking space adventures✔️, chivalric romance✔️, outer space locations✔️, faster-than-light travel✔️, futuristic weapons and technology✔️, galactic empires✔️, interstellar wars✔️, and aliens✔️. Yep, this is a Space Opera. Mash together a bit of “Firefly” and “Indiana Jones”. Add in some “Last Starfighter” vibes, and an Enemies to Lovers trope. It’s a romp across space full of villains, heros, aliens, and artificial intelligences. It’s a David and Goliath space opera. (to be exact, it’s a Hudson and Goliath space opera 🤣) And because it fits its genre so well, it’s 4 stars from me.🌵📚👩🏼‍🦳”
