Her Wicked Stepbrother

Rate this book
From USA Today bestselling author Amy Olle comes a sexy, captivating new series, The Nolan Bastards.

My stepbrother hates me.

That’s fine, because I hate him too.

I hate his crooked smile and the way he looks at me, like he’s a sugar addict and I’m the last cupcake on earth. I hate that he makes me feel like I’m more than that lost little girl whose mom didn’t want her, then leaves and doesn’t come home again for days.

And I really, really hate that he flirts with other girls.

A lot of other girls.

But it’s fine. Really, it is. Soon, he’ll be leaving to attend university on the other side of the world, and I’ll only have to see him on holidays and at the rare family get-together. It’ll all be just fine.

As long as I don’t fall in love with him.

HER WICKED STEPBROTHER is the first book in The Nolan Bastards series. It is an emotional, steamy novella with an ending that will leave you craving more. Scroll up to one-click this sizzling Cinderella-inspired new adult romance today!

2.5 - 3 stars?

It did have potential but...

Well, I think my biggest issue with this book was the heroine, Brynn.
She is 17 when the story picks up, turns 18 by the end.
However, she sounds more like a whiny 10 year-old than an adult.
And that drove me crazy and I just couldn't for the life of me connect with her character.

Plus, her doormaty personality didn't help things either.
Not once did she stand up for herself.
Not once did she confront her father about all the things she bitched about.
She was so pathetic at times, I wanted to holler.
And because the entire story is like a long 'dear diary' moment from a 10 yo girl, it all felt so juvenile and so immature at times, I rolled my eyes so hard I was afraid they would stay like that.

I did like the brothers, I think they were the most interesting part of this story.
I really loved our hero, Aiden, he was sooo darn cute!
I absolutely detested the idiotic father and the lazy ass step-mother.

Also, worth mentioning is the misleading title.
There was nothing wicked about Aiden. He was protective of her right from the get-go. She was just too stupid to see it.
Too stupid to see the true wickedness of her so called father and the step-monster.
And that was a true bummer.

All in all, this story lacked originality in my opinion.
As well as depth and maturity.

It did hold my interest and I am planning to read the next book.
Hopefully it will bring some sort of maturity to the table since they are in their 30s in the next one.
So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
And I hope I will like the next one more.
But we'll see.

The Negatives

- Rape as a plot device. I hate hate hate hate hate this. Rape is horrific, not a bump in the road to up the angst.

- Terrible, horrible, god-awful parenting.

- The gold-digging Mama Nolan in general. She makes Cinderella's stepmother look like she likes helping out with the chores.

- Main characters who need therapy much more than they need romance.

- Instalove with no apparent reason.

- No getting to know each other. No apparent connection beyond sex.

- Poor writing. E.g. the heroine decides to see if anyone else will take over cooking for the family if she doesn't do it and... we don't find out because the author inserts a pool scene and then skips forward in time. Obviously, Brynn finding out whether all of her family are self-centred or whether just some of them are is hardly essential to the plot but it's poor form for an author not to answer even the most basic questions that they themselves have posed.

- Missing words.

- Cover models who bear no resemblance to the characters. Aiden is only 17/18. The model has at least five years on him.

The Positives

I'm struggling here...

- It was free.

- Step-whatever stories can be a light, fun way for readers to explore taboo without hitting too many difficult moral questions.

- A few scenes were hilarious, albeit possibly unintentionally.

Overall, a failure, although I may still try the next one.

I have read the series of the Nolan Brothers and I am delighted to read this spin off series of the Nolan Bastards.
The three Nolan brothers who come to live in Chicago because their mother is getting married, are really interesting characters. The way that Amy writes the characters, you can't help but get attached and want to know more about them.
The blurb was right, at the end of this story - cliffhanger and I want to know what happens next.
All of the brothers will get their stories told and I look forward to reading them.
When you read the story, it isn't your typical stepbrother insta romance type story.
Brynn is dealing with so much trama and feelings of not being good enough, combine that with Aiden dealing with being a bastard, makes a gripping combination.
Also the cover gives you an idea of what Aiden looks like. I highly recommend this author and her series, you won't be disappointed.
Thanks to Amy for giving me the opportunity to review and leave my honest opinion.

I am really ????? about this book, I kinda like it but everything happens so fast, i really got confused a lot during it, it was a fast read because it jumped a lot from occasions to others. I haven’t decided how to rate it, so I’ll give 3 stars but could easily be 2 or 2,5
Going to the second one, but having doubts about it...

Also two scenes reminded me of “Stepbrother Dearest”. Their first met in the bathroom (if you’ve red stepbrother dearest you’ll know what I’m talking about) & their ice cream scene. But that’s fine...

that’s all folks, xx

This story is the setup to Saint. It gives us The backstory of Aiden and Brynn. They meet when Brynn’s father marries Aiden’s mother. All Brynn wants is to be loved. Her character is almost Cinderellaish. she seemed to be forgotten And ignored by everyone except Aiden. Fast paced with great characters.

I don't usually read novellas, and had I realized this book was so short, I probably wouldn't have picked it up -- but I'm glad that I did. Despite being short, this book didn't read like the usually rushed novella - it felt like a full-length novel up until it ended.

Despite the title, it wasn't thinly veiled erotica either. I am intrigued to read on in the series and continue the character's stories further. The romance and tension between the main characters were well executed and the family dynamics between the teens and the parents was handled realistically. The characters felt real - which is an amazing accomplishment for a novella.

I look forward to more!

It was hard to get in the mind of a teenager, especially one who constantly lived in a depressive state with no sense of self. I wanted to root for Brynn but it was hard. Each person was trying to manipulate her, and she more often than not, let it happen. I needed more convincing that Aiden actually felt something for her and it just wasn't there.

My two main issues with this book:
1. They’d be far better off moving to Ireland than coming to the USA. EU citizenship! Socialised medicine! Also the US immigration system does not move that quickly.
2. Cliffhanger ending.

This book was AWFUL. Nothing but an evening of Trauma Porn. No character growth no romance no HEA just awful people living in the same house being awful to each other. I’m supposed to believe he’s a romantic lead?!?!? He stares at her while we listen to her pathetic inner monologue of how no one loves her and then she’s offered the chance to leave and be loved and she’s all like “no thanks, I prefer being ignored and abused by my family. I think I’ll stay”. I can’t believe this story now lives in my head. If I could give it a negative rating I would.

Plot and idea was good but lacking in other areas!!

So this book had lots of promise and I found myself enjoying it but at the same time I wasn't enjoying it.....it's really wierd....I liked the plot, I liked the alpha bad boy Aiden and his two brothers.....but my biggest issue was Brynn...I like my heroines to have some fire in their belly and although it's nice to show vulnerability this girl didn't have a back bone at all!!! It was like hearing the internal mumblings of a 10 year old not 17/18 year old! Then add in the fact that her step mom is a bitch and her dad forgets she exists it's all a bit pathetic!! And in my opinion it was overdone by the author! Just once I wanted her to stand up for herself and when the opportunity arises she does nothing and this didn't sit right with me. Despite this i still want to read the next instalment...more because I want to see the plot through and see how Aiden has changed. I'm really hoping that Brynn has woke up and grew a pair!!!

I don’t think I’ll be finishing this series. My first issues was when I realized the characters young age. Judging the cover I’d assumed it was a contemporary romance, but it seemed a more mature YA. I don’t mind reading about younger characters, if their maturity level isn’t as immature and childlike as some YA can be. The time line was difficult to track. I think it stated in the summer then it jumps repeatedly over three years I think? As soon as the author started making unrealistic choice for her characters is when I lost interest.

Why is her dad so terrible, like he gets remarried and ignores his daughter’s existence except to force her to go to parties when she says she doesn’t want to just because his new wife says so, and trying to force bonding between his daughter and her stepmother when her stepmother even fucking said she’d “always wanted a daughter” to her face when she got pregnant and didn’t even apologize to said stepdaughter and gives no fucks about trying to get to know her stepdaughter??? He literally forgets Brynn’s birthday, realizes he must’ve forgotten it when Brynn says she’s eighteen (or doesn’t even care), and never fucking apologizes yet somehow is infuriated when he catches Aiden and Brynn together? He has no fucking right as such a neglectful father (and for some reason Brynn continues to work for him for free, even though he never thanks her and doesn’t realize he stopped doing any household chores and doesn’t give any fucks about his daughter who’s been with him through his first wife’s abandonment?!).

And you’re telling me in the next book, despite him kicking Aiden out and telling him never to come back, he’s GIVING HIS COMPANY TO AIDEN and not his daughter who’s been working there for whatever goddamn reason (Brynn, you need therapy and to dump your sorry ass family). Let’s not forget the SA at the party; her stepbrothers dragged her along (at her stepmother and father’s insistence bc again douchebag) and left her alone even though they know Kyle’s supposed to be a douchebag… idk… like I liked her stepbrothers more than any of the other characters in this, but I thought they’d keep a bit more of an eye on her because she’s never been to a party and has no friends at their school. Her best friend Molly appears once and doesn’t seem to be much of a best friend; her only real scene is to say she thinks Aiden has a thing for her because she thinks Aiden is looking at her. The writing’s not all bad (but the inconsistency with writing in the Irish accents annoyed me), but I hated half the characters. And we never got an explanation for why Harry stood her up for prom??? He seemed like a decent kid but he’s never mentioned again even though he sits next to Brynn in class.

I figured this book would piss me off because I saw that review about Brynn being a doormat, but I foolishly had hope. I thought her people pleasing tendencies were unfortunately realistic, especially because of her abandonment issues and related insecurities, but it made it way too easy for her to be stepped on. The author’s bio says she’s putting her psych degrees to use, but why can’t she make her characters go to therapy instead of acting like love will fix all?????? She’s just piling on the trauma and abuse and being like hey, they’ll get their HEA and it’ll be fine. I’m annoyed. The plot of the next book, from the reviews I’ve looked at, also seems really random (why is the mob involved now?!? Besides the whole her dad handing his company over to Aiden whom he kicked out of the house and didn’t approve of being with his daughter, but then he also doesn’t seem to have cared about his daughter after emotionally manipulating her into not leaving by being all sad looking? What a piece of shit. Her dad pisses me off.) and like a letdown. More SA/rape? And her dad doesn’t fucking care? He’s more disgusted by the stepbrother situation when they met at 17 for the first time and aren’t related and are literally only tied together because their parents decided to get married after meeting online and doesn’t care that his daughter got raped bc of his own dealings with the fucking mob? I know the next book is going to piss me off way too much so it’s better that I stop here. Her dad is making me want to round down on my rating, but overall this was kind of an in between book.

My first time reading this author and I hope not my last. This was a novella for the novel the Saint that completes the story of Brynn and Aiden. Wow! This is such a good story, this author does not mess around she hit the ground running. We find out at the same time Brynn does that her dad’s online girlfriend is moving to us US with her three boys so they can get married. Wait! What? Yup, married. Oh, yeah one future stepbrother the youngest, Rory is a freshman in high school and fourteen soon to be fifteen. Cian, is fifteen soon to be sixteen and a sophomore. Then there is Aiden the one that takes Brynn’s breath away. He is seventeen like herself but six months old also a senior.

They had some time to get to know one another over summer but they were from Ireland and just learning what they are saying has been a challenge. But, for her she went from cooking for her and her dad to now a total of six. It didn’t take long before she got tired of her modern day Cinderella routine. So, she just stopped. Her stepmom to be did not handle her mother skills well but the sex kitten bit down pat. And once married soon after they are pregnant. Then, she wants a bigger house. Her dad is overwhelmed so all the kids pitch in to help to yield a better profit so her dad could buy the house she wants.

She feels Aiden is starting to like her as a person. Once the projects over however, he is back to scowling and dating, This makes her feeling defeated at ever finding anyone to like her or love her. When Aiden saves her from something embarrassing to her personally, she feels closer to him. Sometimes she feels she can see it in his eyes then puff it’s gone. She spends most of the book wondering why everyone leaves her or hates her. Walking through some difficult moments head on .

Enjoy the ride you’ll love the easy going feel of the characters but at times the indifference Aiden shows is loud and you are wondering how can no one see it? He loves her! I give this: 5 stars. Received during July book giveaway.

I really didn't care for the writing in this.
It couldn't hold my interest.
So they meet and their parents get married. She has a crush and he's an asshole.
They finally end up together. He tells her that he hadn't been with another girl sexually ( although she literally watched him) that he couldn't get it up for them. They sneakily have sex. Her dad catches him in her bed and kicks him out the house. Aiden begs her to go with him but then her dad tells her that Aiden got Sam (her bully from school) pregnant. She of course is hurt by the deceit and doesn't know what to believe and on top of that her dad threatens her that if she leaves he will never talk to her again. So she stays.

Aiden really should've understood.. if he really didn't think it was his baby he should've given a few days for her to calm down and talked to her. Because he knew her dad was all she had and how she felt about her self and how she blamed herself for no one liking her and her mom leaving.
Instead he leaves and never looks back or reaches out again. Completely moved on apparently.

Book 2 takes place 12 years later. Her dad is giving the company she help build to Aiden. I am not planning on reading it. The way he left was complete shit and how he froze her out after that. She spent forever unable to get over him and he just moved on. Honestly, he was sketch from the beginning. Up until they had sex, they had no chemistry. They hardly had interactions - the ones they did have were sweet and decent. But really, it was the writing style that made me return book 2 without reading.

Spice 1/5
Humor 0/5
Emotional 0/5
World Building 2/5
Overall 2/5

Brynne Hathaway is a 17-year-old only child who adores her father. Her mother abandoned them when Brynne was twelve, and she has felt inadequate and unloved since. She overcompensates by doing all of the indoor and outdoor chores, including cooking. One night, unexpectedly, her father announces he will be getting married to a woman from Ireland and that she and her three sons will arrive next week and will live with them. Brynne wants her new family to love her, especially Siobhan, her father’s intended. Tensions are high when she meets Siobhan and her sons Aiden, Cian, and Rory, especially since all Aiden does is glare at her. This begins the tumultuous relationship between Aiden and Brynne, who secretly are attracted to each other but act like they hate each other at every opportunity. Until Brynne’s 18th birthday when her life changes forever. She celebrates alone because her father forgot her birthday, until Aiden comes home and finds her putting candles on brownies, and they admit their true feelings.

Her Wicked Stepbrother is an addictive tale about first love, forbidden love, the power of family, and how childhood emotional scars can remain with us forever. Brynne will never forget that her mother abandoned her, nor will Aiden forget that he and his brothers are bastards. Both are complex and flawed characters, with lots of emotional baggage. The story was so good that I immediately bought and read the next in the series, Saint. Definitely worth the time.

Was this a joke?! Omg this book could’ve been good but it was not. This book was like if someone talked in run on sentences and never finished a train of thought.

I have so many questions.
Why did Henry cancel??? We just never see him again?
Why did you write brynn as such a lame person? She has one friend who doesn’t even go to her school and then also gets stood up for PROM?! Her life honestly sucks. Her one friend also seems shitty and we never really see her.
Her dad forgets her birthday and then just never remembers??? She didn’t think to somehow bring it up bc I would’ve!!
Aidan had NEVER said brynns name before having sex with her?! Are you kidding me!! They knew each other for at least 6 months and he never said her name “bc he liked her soooo much”🙄 im sure you did Aidan

Aidan seriously can’t w her one shot and didn’t even try to talk to her one more time. The ending was crap and they have a second book TWELVE YEARS later!!! What??!? Are you kidding me? And it sounds terrible too, like he’s a giant d*ck!
Im just shocked bc this book had potential and the author went in the complete wrong direction. Like did brynn try to reach out to Aidan ?! He was really that heartbroken that he couldn’t reach out after she said she couldn’t leave with him in a limited, stressed period of time?? Like AHHHHHH WTF😡🤯🤬😤

Eh, so I am torn. The first thing Is I hate reading hardcore romance involving anyone under 18. As a parent it feels wierd. I think this would have had a better hold on me if they would have escalated later on. But thats just my own opinion. I like the base plot, otherwise. However, there was alot lacking. Its hard to grasp a time frame here. And some paragraphs just ran right into another that started an entire new subject. BUT, the story was good enough to keep me submerged in it. There were quite a few spelling mistake or words missing but....also..the one thing that really bothered me was apparently Brynn was 17 when the relation was starting but her inner dialogs was that of a 12 year old. It really grated, along with the fact that for Aiden, sometimes the words "you" would be "ye" to show his accent. Then other times he didn't use any Irish words. That also bothered me but not enough to read it.

I have died. This book slayed me with its angst and (pretend) enemies-to-lovers. From the way he pretends not to care but the moment another man enters the picture it’s all alpha wolf protecting his mate. Like he would unalive anyone who dared to hurt Brynn.
And Brynn, my heart breaks for her. All she wants is to be loved and not forgotten to not have her mother leaving them when Brynn was twelve hanging over her.
And the ending, I really hope they can work out a HEA in the second book. I love them together too much.
If you love your books full of angst, a brooding hero who will fight his attraction because technically the heroine is his sister even if she’s his stepsister, a heroine who even though is completely insecure is more resilient than she knows. Please read this book.

Wow oh Wow

I love this pairing of Brynn and Adian . Brynn's dad and Adian's Mom get married after meeting online. It's list at first sight with her soon to be stepmother but it quickly turns to love. Brynn thinks no one loves her or even liked her and it is no different than what she thinks Adian feels for her. She thinks he hates her but really he can't stop thinking about her. He eventually tells her how he feels and they end up together in secret only to get caught. It is truly one of the best reads that I have read in a long while. I can't wait to read Saint the end of their story to see how it all turns out. Definitely read this book you can't go wrong.

It was alright. The lead up was great and the heat/chemistry between the two was good. However when they finally got together I felt like it was anticlimactic because it happened so quickly. There was no foreplay and no sexual tension (aside from one scene near the start). It had some really beautiful quotes in there about loving and lasting for one another, and I liked how the main character seemed authentic and vulnerable when she revealed the lingering effects of her mother's departure. The other two younger brothers seemed like an after thought, I wish there was more development and defining characteristics about them. I feel like in that sense the book left a lot to be desired, but it was okay. Maybe 4/10.

Hero and heroine barely spent time with one another for the first half of the book. Aiden spent most of the time ignoring Brynn, pretending he hates her. Then when they do sleep together for the first time, the “I love you” started coming out of both their mouths. It just doesn’t make sense that they were in love when they did not do bonding and got to know one another better. Romance was unbelievable. This book is a part 1, there’s a part 2 to continue this story which I won’t be reading. Could not like the hero or heroine. Title was misleading.

oh the possibilities

The premise for this was just mind blowing.
The characters and storyline were all set to make my kindle cry and melt.

The thing that got me was the language used. 3 Irish boys come to the states and yet it’s not fluently written when they Speak.

Half sentences had you the rest were ye
Some had tink and the one under it has think… from the same character.

It didn’t flow at all for me when the boys were talking.

I haven’t read a single POV for a while so it was different for me, but again, I did like the idea behind this book.

Gripped

Omg I need part 2 of Aidan and Brynn in the saint. This has a kind of cliff hanger to it and it had me gripped I read this in one sitting. It's a typical step brother step sister story in the fact that there love is taboo forbidden but they can't help how they feel even tho they know they doing nothing wrong by having those feeling they also know not everyone would see it that way. Will they ever find a way and have a happy ever after ?
