Unicorn Mates was everything and more. It flowed really well as a co-write and I absolutely loved the story.
Leola is a captivating MC (also vegan, yay), who’s lucky enough to stumble upon some very hot shifters - Cas (I licked him), Kerry and Levon.
The storyline and characters are beautiful and intense and a fabulous beginning to the Valentine Pride series.
I want more from these two, and can’t wait to read the next book.

This was a short and steamy start to a new series! I don’t think I’ve ever read a unicorn shifter book before, but Laura and LA sure know how to write one. On a hike through the Appalachian Mountains looking for the spot where her parents were murdered and she was shot, Leola has the feeling of a predator watching her. She meets and gets cornered by three men and even though her flight or flight senses kick in, she doesn’t flee. She feels a sudden connection to them and knows that they won’t hurt her. After one hot hookup, she can’t seem to keep her mind off the three of them. She goes back to the trail and gets more than she came for including information about her parents that she never thought she’d find out. I really enjoyed the instant connection that she had with Cas, Kerry, and Levon. They never pushed her past her limits or made her feel uncomfortable and she was in full control when it came to her body. This story kept me hooked from the start and was probably the fastest I’ve ever seen a hot in heavy scene in a book. I loved that this ended in a HEA and still left room for more to come. The characters were great, but I hope to see more character development and life of the Valentine Pride in the next installments.

Novella

Quick read, fast burn, little plot. I’m not sure if this was more of an intro or what, but it’s the fated mates, Insta-lust kind with more sex than narrative. Not that that is a bad thing, exactly, but I kinda missed the point?

Pros:
- Brown unicorn...yes.
- New to shifting.

Cons:
- Too Fast.
- Flat characters with no plot.
- Very short. Novella (which is s good thing if you like that).

It's VERY fast burn, there is barely a plot and the characters have no real depth to them.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I have said this before in other reviews, I always give honest reviews whether people appreciate them or not.

The story begins with Leola going for a hike in the mountains. She has a map to where she thinks her parents might have been killed, but for the most part she’s just enjoying herself in nature. At some point she feels like she’s being followed, she isn’t, and she continues on until she hears a twig snap. No, this isn’t some horror movie where she’s too stupid to live. When she turns around she sees a man. She turns and sees another, then turns again to see a third one. Fight or flight, right? The three men are Cas, Levon and Kerry and they want to know what she’s doing in their territory. Did I mention that Leola is a shifter of some kind? She is, and the men keep calling her a little deer. That confused me since the title is Unicorn Mates and the cover doesn’t have any prey animals on it.

Cas and company seduce Leola and once she gets home she just can’t stop thinking about them. A week or so later she has a sudden need to shift. This is a strange occurrence for her since she’s only shifted a couple of times in her life. She knows she’s a shifter, but only from accidentally shifting. She was raised by humans so she never received any education about herself, her animal and shifters in general. The men are mountain lions, Cas being their alpha. She goes back to the mountain so that she can try shifting and so she can maybe see the guys. This is where we find out she isn’t a deer, she’s a unicorn! A brown unicorn. Leola and the men not only hook up again, they semi educate her about the shifter community and about mates.

This is a quick read and the first of the Valentine Pride trilogy. Unlike usual, while I didn’t initially realize this was part of a series, I actually began reading Book One! I have begun different series by reading the second or third stories first by accident. I own and have read other books from Ms. Greenwood and Ms. Boruff and I enjoyed them too. This is very hot and sweet. I need to get started on the second story now, Unicorn Luck.

Worst shifter story ever! First of all Leola is really naive about being a shifter. She talks too much and thinks too much. Second Cas is too smart to not know shes a unicorn not a deer so the nickname is pointless. Third I feel like there is a huge chunk of story missing from the beginning because it starts with sex in the forest. It's not bad but Leola is too eager and too trusting to let three strangers have their way with her. It was way too short and really rushed. I was super bored and not impressed.

This is a quick and easy read. The storyline is well-crafted, intriguing, suspenseful, has drama and steam. The characters are defined, and likable with sizzling chemistry. I liked it.

This is a wonderful, steamy, fantasy series by two great authors! I love Laura Greenwood novels and can't say enough good things about her writing. Ms. Boruff is new to me, but I can see her influence in the book and it really adds to the story in a positive way! The characters are well developed and complex. Her story world is detailed and you can "see" it in your mind's eye as you go along. The is action, steam and adventure. If you like reverse harem PNR, you will love this series! I highly recommend it!

This book was pure smut, in the best way. The heroine was badass, she had an interesting backstory, and the men were hot. I only wish there was more included about each of the characters’ backstories.

BUT WHERE WAS THE MATING SCENE??!?! The book built up to that one moment, and it wasn’t even included. When the epilogue arrived without any biting, I was bereft. Because of this, the book lost a couple stars for me.

Anyway, it book was a good novelette, and I definitely recommend if you are looking for a short and smutty read with interesting characters. A surprisingly good amount was fit into such a short book, which definitely impressed me.

Magical

A truly unique and magical love story! Who knew a simple hike could change your life forever! Raised by humans, she didn’t realize she was a shifter or that others existed! Surprise! Surprise! There are and she just met three! Who or what were they, were they going to play with their food(her) before they ate her? Read and enjoy the unexpected surprises with a little suspense throw in! Loved the characters hot sexy shifters and cute little deer or is she?

Brown unicorns....

Like most adults, I also assume white, when I think of unicorns. However, this is about a brown unicorn, with 3 cougar mates. This is book 1 of 3, with a reverse harem. I thought there would be more "predators & prey" type of stuff, but not in this book. There's some steamy sex, but no triggers in this book, nothing dark. It's a quick, sexy read, with more of her parents story in the next book, hopefully.

A short story of fates mates. The story moves pretty fast. It is all about love and mates. Leola knows she’s a shifter but doesn’t know much else about them. But when she takes a hike in the woods her life will change. A definite instant love/lust. The heat level is mild with a rh twist. Story does continue on in the next book.

Ok

Didn’t not like it. But could have been better. I don’t expect anything too in-depth with a quick story like this, but I just wasn’t feeling it from the characters. The story was a fun little fantasy. But I just felt meh, about all of them. They even irked me a little a couple of times.

Unicorn Mates (Valentine Pride Book 1) by Laura Greenwood, L.A. Boruff – This was a freebie starter for a serial novel, so you are going to have to buy four novellas to get the whole story. There was more plot that I thought you could cram into a pretty short space, so I would like the rest of the story. It is one of those serials that I wish was on kindle unlimited though. Happy Reading!

Unicorn Mates

I enjoyed this book very much. The shifters are doing what they can to survive by banding together, but there are always unexpected surprises in store. A good start for a series.

It was unexpected

The way multipartner scenes play out are pretty standard. This didn't do any of that. It was more pedestrian in some ways and more interesting in others. I enjoyed it. Nothing much to it other than two sex scenes and three additional scenes.

A quick shifter story

This is a shortish story & probably aimed at late teens - early 20s readers from the writing style?

Explicit sex but no swearing. Hints at a possible murder mystery later in the series

Really good book

Very hot! She thinks she’s a deer, but when she shifts she finds out she’s a unicorn. She also finds 3 sinfully gorgeous men that claim they are her fated mates. Very hot book!

interesting read

Was a very quick and interesting read. A pity the books aren’t on kindle unlimited as I have to leave it at the first book, just when it ends on an intriguing note.

Steamy and sexy. Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to considering I am not a huge fan of shifters in the first place but thought I would give this a go. Definitely gonna try more.

Fun though a little predictable. I liked the usual mix of shifter species in this mating; that was unusual. That makes Leola's pregnancy a source of fascination. What is the baby going to be?
