The Company #1

Moonlighter

Rate this book
Only in my family could a professional hockey player earning seven million dollars a year be considered a slacker.

I'm at the height of my athletic career. Yet my arrogant brother is always trying to recruit me into the family business: a global security company so secretive that I don't even know its name. Pass, thanks. I don't need a summer job.

But the jerk ambushes me with a damsel in distress. That damsel is Alex, the competitive, sassy girl I knew when we were kids. Now she's a drop-dead gorgeous woman in deep trouble. So guess who's on a flight to Hawaii?

It's going to be a long week in paradise. My job is keeping Alex safe, while her job is torturing me with her tiny bikinis. Or maybe we're torturing each other. It's all snark and flirting until the threat against Alex gets serious. And this jock must become her major league protector.

Moonlighter is a stand-alone novel. No cliff-hangers, no prior experience necessary. Contains: hackers, hockey players, and a hotel room with only one bed.

Moonlighters is the first book in Sarina Bowen’s new The Company series, and I loved it! This had just the right amount of suspense, humor, and steam, and it was a great fake dating/friends to lovers romance.

Eric Bayer is a popular NHL player and one of the older players in the league. He’s no where near ready to hang up his skates, but he’s looking forward to the break he has between seasons. Then his brother Max calls. Max and Eric’s dad own a super elusive security company and they need Eric’s help with something. It has to do with the safety of his childhood friend, Alex, so he can’t really say no.

Alex Engles is a CEO and tech billionaire, and her safety is at risk. She’s spending time in Hawaii for a conference, and Eric tags along as security, yes, but also as her fake boyfriend. I love this troupe so much. I mean, two people pretending to date, one bed in a hotel room… what could go wrong?

Eric is such a flirty guy and I loved all the build up and back and forth between Alex and Eric. I wanted them together for real so bad, but there is a huge underlying thing going on. I was actually a bit surprised that this was one of the huge plot points in the story, but I didn’t hate it. It made the ending that much sweeter.

OMG I was so excited to get Eric Bayer’s book! If you’ve read Sarina’s Brooklyn Bruisers series, you’ve already met Eric, one of the more seasoned players on the team. Though this can be read as a complete standalone, I think anyone like me who’s read that series will love it extra lots because you see so many of the other characters from that series in this book. Plus, Eric! He was always one of my favorites from the team.

If you’re looking for a slightly suspenseful, fun, sexy, and captivating read, pick up Moonlighters. Recommended to anyone who loves sports romances, fake dating troupe, friends to lovers, and just romance in general.

Even though it took me more than a week to finish this book there wasn’t really anything wrong with it. Nothing I can put my finger on, that is.

The reader gets exactly what the author advertises.

A sweet hockey player, having great chemistry with a former childhood friend, now powerful CEO. With lots of sweet and endearing moments between the couple, it makes for a charming read. The real conflict doesn’t arise until closer to the end, and I must say it wasn’t entirely solved yet. And I wonder if that’s part of the upcoming books.

Moreover, the security company that is such a big part of this first book, sounded extremely intriguing. Especially his arrogant brother who runs it like a king got me excited. And the secrecy surrounding that place makes my fingers tingle.

The side topic, especially everything surrounding the technical side of the plot was refreshingly on point and trendy. And it makes me excited about what’s to come in regards to this new series.

Overall the novel was sweet. Maybe a bit too sweet for my taste. And maybe the missing tension was what gave me such trouble. Either way, if you love this kind of novels, you better pick it up. Because even though it took me a long time to finish it, I’m still very excited about what’s to come.

A brand new series by one of my favorite authors....sign me up !! Even though I have read multiple books by this author, she is mostly known to me as the brilliant co-writer of one of my all-time favorite books "Him". I have not (yet) read the "Brooklyn" series which this new series is a spin-off of. No worries though...it can be read without reading all that one first ;)

If you're a fan of sports, banter, fun and sexy times, you definitely have to give this one a go. I will confess and admit that she had me at "hockey player", which is why I will now also have to read the "Brooklyn" series.

Playing hockey is not all Eric does though...at least not if his brother has anything to say about it. And so Eric gets lured into doing some security gig while posing as a fake boyfriend to CEO and childhood friend Alex.

I really liked Eric, he was pretty awesome, and I also loved that Alex was such a smart, strong and independent woman...even if she was she was in danger and needed help.

I am definitely curious as to what's next. Keeping my eye out 70191_eyes-emoji-png

"That’s where I’d rather put my tongue, damn it. Forget the ice cream. This is going to be the longest week of my life."
Moonlighter was my introduction to Sarina Bowen's writing, and an early Christmas present, so I just had to dive right in. And... the book is freaking amazing! I loved it all: the romance, the Company, the action sequences... what's not to love?
But look... where can I find me an Eric? If anyone knows, please message me.

"Maybe it makes me a sap, but none of the bad shit matters quite so much when you’re curled up around a woman who makes you smile."
I mean... Eric has it all. He's hot, he's a hockey player, he's so funny I was laughing out loud at times (his conversations with the Butler are hilarious), he's super protective and he is as grumpy as he is sweet.

"My response to a kiss on the cheek is pretty extreme. If he kissed me for real, I’d probably combust."
I love Alex, and I wish I were her. She is ultra professional, a programmer, and she manages her company in a men's world, without most people realizing how smart she is. She is strong, she is assertive, she is feisty. She is absolutely awesome!

When Alex needs someone to accompany her to Hawaii, she turns to Max, Eric's brother, and The Company, his high-end security firm. And she gets Eric for five nights, and a lot more than she bargained for. Yeap, time for some seriously steamy moments.
And when Alex's newest tech development is in jeopardy due to sabotage and hacking, you see some pretty great action scenes. It doesn't take your focus away from the romance as much as it adds to it.

"Life happens. And much of it is beautiful."
They're so perfect together. I adored the banter, the chemistry between them was scorching hot, and the way you see their relationship progressing is incredible. You can see the walls coming down and you know where this is going, but you can't stop reading. I seriously forgot I needed to have dinner today because of this book!

"Once I stopped fighting it, I realized he could be my reality. I love him. He’s here to stay. And the rest of it is really just noise."
Their happily ever after is one of the sweetest I've ever read. They sort of fit together, and they're just right for each other. It's perfect.

I loved this so much! Bring on the next books!

If you’ve read the Brooklyn Bruisers series and/or its spin-off Brooklyn series, you’ll be familiar with Alexandra and Eric who kick off the newest series in the Bowen conglomerate, The Company. And whilst a spin-off of a spin-off, it’s also an easy stand-alone.

description No man has ever overwhelmed me like Hurricane Eric.”

Moonlighter pretty much delivered exactly what I want when I pick up a Sarina Bowen book; a hot, slightly grumpy hockey player, an independent successful woman and plenty of giggles and steamy shenanigans, but this time around suspense and drama are added to the mix as Eric swaps skates for security during his summer break accompanying childhood friend, Alex to Hawaii.

description Thank you for sharing your talents with me last night.”

Looking forward to more from the Bayer family and with Eric’s older brother, Max featuring a fair bit throughout, I’ll be here to see what Sarina has planned for him.

Some walk by night…or sled

Who else had the theme song from Moonlighting in their heads when they saw the title of this story? For me, every time I started reading Moonlighter, I was singing it in my head. Of course, I then had to google the lyrics because I knew I was singing it wrong and realised that it had a little relevance to Moonlighter.

Some walk by night
Some fly by day
Nothing could change you
Set and sure of the way…

Moonlighter is about Alex and Eric living their lives and doing what they need, to get to where they want to get. By the end of the song, it changes to -

So come walk the night
Come fly by day
Something is sweeter
‘Cause we met ‘long the way
We’ll walk the night
We’ll fly by day…

Moonlighting by Al Jarreau

I guess you could say that a lot of love stories are a little like this. You don’t always plan to walk your path with someone beside you, but when the right person comes along, you can’t imagine walking it alone anymore.

I think I hold a grudge against Alex because she nearly ruined Nate and Rebecca’s happiness in Brooklynaire (which is my favourite in the series). Yes, by the end of Brooklynaire I sorta kinda forgave her, but Moonlighter showed her in a better light. The more I got to know Alex, her strength, determination and intelligence shined through. What made her even more lovable was seeing her vulnerability while under attack. It’s hard to be a woman in a male-dominated work world at the best of times, let alone when you have a target on your back. Even the toughest of us needs a helping hand sometimes.

With Eric, I liked him sorta kinda, but the start of Moonlighter made his single-minded focus on his career a little unappealing. This could have something to do with my lack of understanding and dedication to ANY sport. If sport was removed from my life, the only thing I would miss is the valuable uninterrupted reading time I get when Hubby is consumed with watching it. By the end, I think my love for Eric increased because he finally worked out that SPORT ISN’T EVERYTHING!! Well, in his case, it was more about realising that there were options when you leave the ice that doesn’t have to be separate from hockey. Priorities changed when a little lady entered his life.

I really enjoyed reading Moonlighter. Sarina Bowen has taken two characters that I didn’t particularly like, and made them so lovable, I want more of them. If I was to have any complaints it would be that I can’t get David Hasselhoff’s image out of my head for Eric. I’m not sure why, but I think the cover model looks like David Hasselhoff. Then, when Eric is running on the beach in Hawaii, I was thinking red trunks the whole time. I didn’t particularly want that imagery in my head, unfortunately. I also felt like things were left a little in the air regarding Alex’s “issues” with her business. I’m guessing that The Company may be still dealing with her issues in future instalments.

The second half of Moonlighter was my favourite. There are scenes that left me with a big goofy smile on my face. I was even a little emotional towards the end when an emergency dash to the hospital brings Alex and Eric even closer. Sarina Bowen has treated us to another excellent story that made me smile, sigh and squirm in delight. I can’t wait for more in The Company series.

Five nights. Two adversaries. Only one bed in their hotel room.

I can not comes up with what is so memorable about this book. Yes Eric is hot and perfect boyfriend. But his background is off. I mean he is a famous NHL player and suddenly just agreed to be bodyguard? Making 7 mil a year. Jeez! If I were Eric, I will not taking any other job aside of lounging on the beach with a perfect book.

The story is also too long. Too many plots being twist here and there that I just lost. The suspense aspect is too messy. The romantic aspect is also boring. The sex scenes are cold. And it being repeated over and over again.

There are several moments of fun and cute. But not so much to make this book memorable. Overall I do enjoy this book OK.

DNF on page 20

The heroine is 3 months pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's child when she meets the hero. Her ex was abusive so she decided to be a single mum.

I don't think a pregnant woman's love story is my cuppa, that's not romantic for me at all; so I am dropping it...

I wish they would at least meet when she already had the child, say when the child is 3 - 4 years old or sth like that; that would be better and I would read it, then.

Well, to each their own... this could still be a great book for you; just not my cuppa!

We all remember Eric and Alex from previous books. Eric is obviously one of the Brooklyn hockey players, and Alex was team owner Nate's best buddie from College.

Eric and Alex knew each other when they were preteens. They spent an amazing summer together one year. And now it seems they have to spend a week together in Hawaii. ☺

Eric's dad and brother run a billion dollar security company and Alex hired them to protect her from her ex. The stupid and violent ex whose baby she's having in about six months.

Eric wasn't planning on doing much after the long hockey season - least of all playing bodyguard for an icy billionaire CEO, but his brother conned him into it and he also doesn't want to leave Alex unprotected at that conference. Plus she's not really icy - she's super attracted to him! But nothing can ever happen between them, right?

LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN!! ☺

Such an adorable story!

Romantic-Suspense-Comedy at its best.

I just adored Eric and Alex!!!

We have so many sweet and funny and sexy hawaiiy moments in the first part. And then we're back home in New York and it's still sweet but it also gets very frustrating and exciting and dangerous for our darlings!

That's all I'm telling you about the story.

It's such an amazing romance. So full of ... stuff!☺

I just loved reading it. I loved every single moment of this book.

I could read those kinds of books every week for the rest of forever!

I also wouldn't mind seeing this as a tv show one day!

Can't wait to get more stories from that new series. There are SO many adorable people still left for us to swoon over!

MOONLIGHTER was such an adorable + funny + sweet + exciting Bodyguard-Hockey-Office-CEO-Baby-Romantic-Suspense!!! I loved every moment of this book! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Eric - he'll be sold out in no time - and this one is MINE!

A tiny little thing ... the cover? What is happening there? I don't love it all that much - I can hardly recognize anything. I would've preferred something different!
EDIT: Sarina changed the cover for a few reasons - the guy is not really my kind of guy either - but it's so much better than the old cover! And it fits with the Brooklyn books!

Not bad but not that good either, unfortunately. There were 4 tropes in this book - the romance, the pregnancy, H's career/injury, and the launch of the h's new product and the problems/espionage/murder - complications tied to it. But the last aspect wasn't solved at all, the author left too many questions unanswered.. who was behind the criminal actions, could they be stopped, could the h save her product, how could she save it... the rest of the book was ok, but not nearly as good as pther books from this author. 2,5 stars.

Another SB winner with this spinoff of the much beloved Brooklyn Bruisers line!

Moonlighter features Eric Bayer who many remember and cooed over in Overnight Sensation or maybe that was just me? I was chomping at the bit for Eric to get his own HEA and SB did not disappoint.

I admit I made a face when I realized who the female protagonist was given her previous asshattery towards Becca but she grovels. Groveling goes a long way with me. She's a smart, sassy and financially independent executive of a cable company that's looking to launch an AI butler that faithfully safeguards the privacy of its owner who is pregnant by an abusive ex and needs body guarding for a conference that he too will be attending.

Enter Eric Bayer.

Eric is cocky, immodest, charismatic, can bring the snark and is especially bossy in the bedroom. He's not looking for forever but his brother (who I also totally dig) sets him up in a fake boyfriend/bodyguard situation in Hawaii with his childhood friend, Alex Engels, and those hit it and quit it days of Eric's are on an egg timer. Acting like a jealous boyfriend quickly morphs into actual boyfriending and it was a pleasure to witness. I liked him SO MUCH!

Maybe Alex's denial of her feelings and/or disbelief in the sincerity of Eric's feelings for her dragged out longer than I would've liked but they clearly have chemistry as well as a connection. They have fun together. The like each other and have a good balance of similarities and differences that made things realistic between them. Eric is amazingly sweet and supportive not to mention forthright about his feelings once he realizes what Alex has become to him.

The sex was pretty sensational especially the fact that Eric still desired Alex when she was "whale" (her words) sized in her third trimester.

That the privacy issue is a central theme, as dry as that seems, was anything but. I was riveted by the scenarios some of which dovetail into high-octane action sequences that I was not mad about. I love a good action scene and though I was bummed that a big part of this storyline was left dangling I was buoyed by the endnotes that said to look forward to more from The Company. Duff, Max and Scout all intrigue me, the latter of which reminded me a whole lot of Lisbeth from the Dragon Tattoo series so I'm genuinely excited to see how the series evolves.

If you're a fan of friends to lovers romance with a side of action and a dabble of comedy then give Moonlighter a try.

AHHH! Sarina Bowen did it again. I fell in love with Eric Bayer in the amazing Brooklyn Bruisers series. He was the older, wiser, surly, closed off hottie of the Bruisers' locker room. But we saw a new side of him in Moonlighter and I was here for it!! Eric and Alex were all potent chemistry and spitfire banter. I loved the electrifying attraction, element of suspense and the new and engaging start to a series. Moonlighter was magic!

Lord. There is nothing I love more than sassy banter and great chemistry. But Hackers come close. They are just a weak spot that I can't deny. So the fact that Moonlighter combines a security firm and a smart and banterific story of a hockey player and a highly intelligent woman needing protection - Sigh. This story and all of it's sexy goodness hit all the right spots! It was full of swoony moments and was a delightful, engaging, smart romance that I love. An added boon was that being in both Alex and Eric's heads was pretty amazing as there were laugh out loud moments that had chuckling and smiling from ear to ear.

Overall, I loved Alex and Eric together. She was feisty, strong and assertive and he was sexy, rugged and delicious. I loved watching the sparks fly and seeing how the always steady, stoic and solid Eric tumbled like a ton of bricks for his childhood friend. This was another solid gold star win for Bowen! Now I can't wait for more books in this new series! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula

Y'all, this is Sarina Bowen like you have never seen her before.

And it was pretty incredible, in case you were wondering.

Take all the magic of her hockey heroes with hearts of gold and add to it some high tech hacker action, and some pulse pounding suspense and you have this fantastic set-up for a new series, and a sizzling, swoony love story to boot.

I loved everything here - from the bodyguard/fake relationship/friends-to-lovers-esque premise, to the gripping, exciting, and interesting storyline. I loved Eric as the lovable grump, and I loved Alex as the whip smart businesswoman who knocked him on his rear end, and stole his heart right out from under him. Their banter was on point, and their burn sizzled slowly with these bursts of fire that set my pulse pounding in a decidedly different way. They were sexy as all get out, but they also had so much heart. I loved the unconventional friends-to-lovers thing they had going. They were a complete treat to read.

And the ending is one of my favorite things I have read in...I don't even know how long. After a thrilling, sexy, pulse pounding story - Ms. Bowen gave us a different kind of thrill. Over-the-top in a way that sat just right with my heart. A little bit humorous and a whole lot heartfelt - it was just perfection. I loved it so much - loved literally everything about this story - and cannot wait to see what The Company has in store for us next! ~ Shelly, 5 stars

O.M.G. I don’t think I have enough words to express just how much I loved Moonlighter. It hit all the high notes of favorites for me: sports romance, romantic suspense, second chance romance, fake girlfriend/boyfriend, secret baby. And I loved every word.

Eric and Alex have such amazing chemistry. Their every interaction is fun, smart, sexy, poignant. I loved how Alex never quite let Eric get too full of himself. And I loved how Eric grounded Alex in the here and now. Their relationship totally worked for me—even when it wasn’t quite working for them! I knew they’d get it together somehow.

I also loved The Company and all the secrecy, code speak, veiled surveillance, alpha males and females—looking right at you, Scout, you total badass!—doing what’s necessary by any means to protect those who’ve hired their services as well as those they love.

Moonlighter may be a spin-off from the fantastic Brooklyn series, but it’s a complete stand-alone, and I cannot wait for more from The Company! ~ Missy, 5 stars

“Are you ready to go to war for her?”
“War,” I repeat slowly. “Against whom?”
“Does it matter”

Eric Bayer isn’t a man to do things by halves whether it’s on the ice with the Brooklyn Bruisers Hockey team or wooing and sweeping the independently successful Alex Engels – when he sets his mind on something, nothing will stand in his way, and we fell instantly in love with him!

Moonlighter is the first book in Sarina Bowen’s new series, The Company, an offshoot of her Brooklyn Bruisers Hockey Series and the character crossover is a great way to catch up with some old friends.

“I’ve always liked having you around,” I say….” I like it way too much.”

This time though, we not only get the sports romance vibe, but our mystery and suspense thirst is quenched, with ‘The Company’ a mysterious super-sleuth firm owned and run by Eric’s computer nerd brother, Max as well as their Dad, and we’re itching to find out more about this secret society! So secret, that even Eric doesn’t know the legal name of the company.

Alexandra Engels is the President and CEO of Engels Media Communications, and the brains behind a new voice-controlled assistant, Bingley (we want a Bingley) that is about to sweep the market, but she has inhouse and outside competitors who either want her design or to see her downfall. Not only that, she’s pregnant by her ex-boyfriend who is a menacing presence in her life.

At the request of Max, Eric, who has a few weeks to spare in his busy hockey life, accompanies Alex to a conference in Hawaii where she is a guest speaker. Posing as her boyfriend, Eric’s job is to protect Alex and act as a buffer between her and her ex, who will also be at the conference.

Alex and Eric are childhood friends who had recently crossed paths, which caused a little resentment on Eric’s behalf, but seeing the beautiful Alex again, puts those feelings on the back burner as he’s instantly smitten and in protective mode over Alex.

‘My old friend is seriously hot. As fake boyfriends go. He’s an A Lister.’

The romance is very swoony as we witness the self-confessed bachelor whose biggest love has always been his hockey career, fall under the spell of the intelligent, driven and sweet Alex. They have more in common than they expected.

‘…his kiss is slow and convincing. It asks all the questions and then answers them at the same time.’

The meshing of sports and techy espionage worked incredibly well in Moonlighter and we’re itching to see where this goes, and especially excited to learn more about the secretive Max and the girl with all the answers, Scout! We were kept on our toes in a tale with an abundance of romance, heat, humour, secrets and duplicity. An entertaining introduction to The Company series.

Moonlighter is book one in a delightful new series by one of my favorite authors, Sarina Bowen!! This is a spinoff of sorts from the Brooklyn Bruisers (my favorite). Eric Bayer is an aging hockey player who is the black sheep of his uber successful family. He gets suckered into helping his brother with "The Company". All he has to do is a be a fake boyfriend to an old family friend...that always ends well!

Max's (Eric's brother) company is super secret and part of what they do is provide security. Max is providing security for Alex, and he needs Eric's help. See, turns out Alex has an idiot of an ex who can't take no for an answer. Oh, and she is pregnant with his baby. Eric doesn't want to help, but Max sort of forces his hand. He gets a free trip to Hawaii out of it! Of course Eric and Alex hit it off.

Eric is genuinely funny throughout the story. He has lots of quippy lines and his banter with Alex is great. She has a deadpan type of humor. She's also a brilliant, fierce girl boss CEO! I love that a pro hockey player is the least successful person in this book. I also loved how Eric loves Alex. Their story is full of the unexpected but Eric just seems to roll with it, no matter what and then one day he realizes he loves her. I also liked that Eric's hockey career was coming to an end and he had to face that. In most sports books, the heroes are top notch and if they get injured, they bounce back triumphantly. Eric is dealing with the decision no pro athlete wants to make and he struggles.

Moonlighter gives you a touch of danger as well which I always appreciate. Alex and Eric build a relationship over months and their chemistry is great. You really believe in their feelings for one another. I was completely engrossed in Moonlighter and I can't wait to see where Bowen takes "The Company" next!

Apparently I was so unimpressed with this read I totally forgot to log it on GR.

But honestly, corporate espionage, spy-like thrills, and a hockey romance? Coupled with a couple (hah) of characters who didn't seem to fit their archetype/concept and as a result everything felt weirdly offbalanced and illfitting? Yeah..

.. for those who remember the side character, Alex, Nate's bestie lady friend, from BROOKLYNNAIRE, this follows her and one of the players from the Bruisers. This also picks up the lead from the last Bruisers book where we learned of the security dude's son Max who is secret agenty and clever and they are all hella more rich than hockey players.. and you know what, do I even need to say more? Nope. I guess we're trying to spin something off of the hockey stuff and I just don't think I'm into it.

I'm definitely trying to transition out of reading any more of Bowen's stuff which is a shame as I've loved so much but it feels like ages since I've loved something new. So. We shall see. But the end feels nigh.

I honestly don’t know what to say about this book because “amazing” or “really freaking awesome” don’t make it justice. It’s intense, romantic, steamy, hilarious, and so heartwarming that it literally leaves you breathless. It makes you feel so many different things at once. It’s hockey with a twist of suspense. And the swoon factor is off the charts.

Sarina Bowen has the uncanny ability to outdo herself every single time she writes a new book. In theory, it doesn’t really surprise me because she’s got some very wicked writing skills. But the truth is that it does surprise me. She just leaves me in awe of her talent. Every. Single. Time. I love how gorgeous her writing is. How she develops not only the story, but her characters. I love how real they feel, their hidden depths and flaws, and how they evolve as the story progresses. Her narrative is easy to read and it flows naturally. She makes it look so simple, and that’s her genius on display, because it can’t possibly be easy to do. I especially appreciate how witty she is, how skillfully she weaves humor into her writing without making them comedies. She’s known for making people cry and laugh at the same time, and I really love that about her.

Moonlighter is book one of The Company, a new series that is actually a spin-off of her Brooklyn Bruisers series. It is a complete standalone, so you really don’t need to read any other book to enjoy this one to the fullest. Having said that, if you haven’t read the Brooklyn Bruisers series, trust me on this, you have to. It’s phenomenal. We first met Alex Engels in Brooklynaire, and Eric Bayer has been a member of the Brooklyn Bruisers team since Rookie Move, but he’s been mostly in the background until Overnight Sensation.

Moonlighter is a perfect combination of old and new. We get to hang out with old favorites like Nate, Becca and Bingley, and at the same time we are introduced to a whole new cast of characters that will hopefully get their own stories. I’m crossing all my fingers here. We get introduced Max, Gunnar, Pieter, and Scout. Max Bayer is Eric’s older brother and the director of The Company, a security agency with no known name. The name is need-to-know only, so we’ll hopefully find out more about it soon. I found him to be the most interesting of the new guys. I honestly can’t wait to read more about him and his secret past. It’s so intriguing!

Alex and Eric were childhood friends who lost contact for over twenty-one years, and who due to an awkward reunion, find themselves at odds for a while. But her circumstances and his chivalry put them in close quarters together, sharing a bed in Hawaii and pretending to be a couple. The attraction is mutual and resisting each other turns their interactions into a sort of battle of wills. The fact is that they find themselves at a crossroads in their lives, facing changes they’re not ready for, and that makes their relationship more of a challenge. But when danger seems to keep following Alex, Eric takes the role of her protector again, willingly this time, and makes it his mission to keep her safe and convince her that they belong together.

I loved their interactions since the beginning. The witty banter, the teasing, the heat and sincere affection between them, their chemistry. Everything. I must confess that Eric Bayer caught me off guard. He is without a doubt one of the swooniest, most adorable book boyfriends I have ever come across. OMG! The guy is so smooth and sweet! I wasn’t expecting that level of awesomeness from him. For a growly and grumpy set-on-his-way athlete, he sure knows how to be charming. He’s definitely a keeper.

Moonlighter is basically the same greatness Sarina Bowen usually delivers, but with a different feel. It’s unique and outstanding, a real pleasure to read. I loved it from start to finish, but even though I didn’t want it to ever end, the ending was my favorite part of the story. It brought tears to my eyes. The happiest of tears. It is heart-meltingly beautiful. Five stars fall short with this one.

4 Opening Perspectives Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free
It has been an established fact that I love the way Sarina Bowen Writes. PERIOD. I do not need to repeat the stats of books I have read or reviews I have done. That would be boring.

All I am going to say is this...

In Moonlighter, she takes characters we have experienced, some who may not have been seen in the best of light...and gives them a new way to understand them.
She shows vulnerability. She shows the need to open one's mind to a future that will close a door to something they love.

Sarina Bowen has never shied away from difficult subjects and in this book, she uses her insights to highlight what it means to an athlete to come to terms with his body. She focuses on what it is like for a woman to be successful in a male-dominated industry. How challenging it can be balancing the tightrope of sexual predators hiding behind three-piece suits.

Now do not let those topics throw you...there is plenty of sexual chemistry between our twosome...Steamy times aplenty.

I read this, enjoyed this, and have a sense of more might be coming with The Company as the base. It could be due to The Company #1 after this title :DDDD Bring it on Ms. Bowen, I am ready.

★5 STARS★

After devouring MOONLIGHTER, I honestly don’t know whether it’s Alex or Eric I have the biggest crush on. Take Alex, she’s an incredibly successful computer programmer and a leader of industry. Her newest innovation has garnered some unwanted attention and with it attempts of sabotage. Although a huge problem in itself, she actually has a more pressing matter at hand, which she needs dealt with swiftly and discreetly.

Discreet is the motto of Eric Bayer’s family run security company. It’s so discreet intact, it doesn’t have a name. Although Eric is more than happy with his illustrious hockey career he’s been roped in by father and brother to help out on Alex’s case.

There’s history with Alex and Eric. They where thick as thieves in childhood but more recently an awkward brush off is the bone of contention that needs to be picked. Eric’s role of bodyguard has them living and working closely together and it’s not long before their history and familiarity develops into intimacy.

Much like Pavlov’s classical conditioning, the mere mention of Eric’s name causes me to salivate. He’s assertive and playful, but it’s his deep rooted caring nature that has me gaga over the man. MOONLIGHTER is a story that keeps on giving. There’s a sizzlingly romance, action filled scenes along with some heartfelt touching moments.

I may sound like a broken record when it comes to Sarina but, I seriously enjoyed this one! My new favorite!

4 1/2 "Baby Love" Stars!

Well, I absolutely love Eric Bayer! He made my heart go pitter patter. I really liked Alex so much too. This story was awesome. Tbh, the tech talk slowed the story down a little for me, but the plot was very good. Some of the technology was kinda scary actually. What may have bumped this one on up to a 5 star for me would have been an epilogue. I want to know how Alex and Eric are doing a year or two from now. Hopefully we'll see them again in future books. Happy reading!

Five nights. Two adversaries. Only one bed in their hotel room.

I’m at the height of my athletic career. Yet my arrogant brother is always trying to recruit me into the family business: a global security company so secretive that I don’t even know its name.
Pass, thanks. I don’t need a summer job.

But the jerk ambushes me with a damsel in distress. That damsel is Alex, the competitive, sassy girl I knew when we were kids. Now she’s a drop-dead gorgeous woman in deep trouble.

So guess who’s on a flight to Hawaii?

It’s going to be a long week in paradise. My job is keeping Alex safe, while her job is torturing me with her tiny bikinis. Or maybe we’re torturing each other. It’s all snark and flirting until the threat against Alex gets serious. And this jock must become her major league protector.

Moonlighter is a stand-alone novel. No cliffhangers, no prior experience necessary. Expect: a growly hero, a lady boss with no time for his attitude, and a war of wills and hormones. Bonus: a hunk wearing a baby in a sling.

This was just what I needed! I wanted a sexy, feel-good romance with wonderful characters and an abundance of chemistry and that is exactly what I got. I only discovered Sarina Bowen less than two years ago and I have read all of her books yet but I have read quite a few. I have yet to be disappointed. There is just something about the way she tells a story that works for me so I was really excited to read this new book and I ended up enjoying every moment of it.

Eric and Alex were childhood friends. They spent time together while their fathers were working. Eric always seemed to follow Alex's lead. Many years later, Eric plays hockey professionally while Alex is running a large company. When Alex needs security, she turns to Eric's brother, Max, and before she knows it she is headed off to Hawaii for a conference with a fake boyfriend in tow.

I loved these two together. Eric was funny and playful with Alex and it seemed to be exactly what she needed. Alex is under a lot of stress but she seems to let go with Eric. They both know that it can't last but they can't seem to resist each other. They are really good for each other being what each other needed in so many different circumstances.

I would highly recommend this book to others. This was a really well-done story filled with some really wonderful heartfelt moments, a mystery that kept me guessing, some toe-curling sexy scenes and a few laughs. I cannot wait to read more of this talented author's work.

I received a digital review copy of this book from the author/publicist.

4 Heroine Loving CROWNS

This was a really good novel. I love the premise, I enjoyed the characters. I LOVED that for once the business, rich, tech genius was the heroine.

There was something that stalled for me, though. I never truly connected with the characters. I didn’t really feel their chemistry outside of the bedroom. Surprisingly, since I didn’t feel the electricity between them, the steamy scenes are some of Sarina’s best.

The plot is unique, and I loved the crossover and the focus on what comes after. The writing, as always was incredibly well done in terms of style.

What is odd, and I can recognize this, is that I loved pieces of this book so much, but when it all came together, it didn’t spark. This is not to say others wont’t enjoy this book. I’m an avid Sarina fan. I’ll read anything she writes. This one just seems to have missed the mark for me.

This is the first in a new series, but it's related to a bunch of others through the Brooklyn Bruisers fictional hockey team. There's not a ton of overlap, but I like knowing things and taking them in order so I go by the completely unofficial and GR-only series Brooklyn Bruisers where this slots in at number 7. You don't need to read any of those before this one, though it's good to know Nate from Brooklynaire and events from that story. Also, it's likely this is helpful to read before Sure Shot because Eric's agent, Bess, features in that one and there are developments at the end of this one that make it potentially super relevant.

That may be my longest series section yet. I frankly don't recall Eric from the others, but he'd be the old man on the team and likely didn't stick out for that reason. Maybe. I dunno. I really liked him, though, because while he starts off in a stereotypical "no relationships because hockey is my life" place, he develops very nicely and is the perfect care-taking stud that really floats my boat.

Alex is less of a win, but that's mostly because I just couldn't buy the wish-fulfillment fantasy of her as the CEO of an important global business. She's just not tough enough and she puts up with all kinds of sexist crap from her senior managers that made her weak. Look, you don't have to be a ballbuster to succeed or anything; that's not what I'm looking for. But if your senior team doesn't even have respect they have no business being on your senior team and calling them out on that isn't being mean it's just good practice. Why she didn't ask for the resignation of her GC is beyond me, frankly, though .

That said, Alex is a great female lead and I ended up liking her, despite not buying her background. I liked her wariness with regards to Eric despite them being acquainted from when they were kids because that was just smart. I liked how she took charge of her pending motherhood and that she was concerned enough about the father to take active, deliberate steps to mitigate future problems. And I really liked how she came to lean on Eric as he proved himself . . . leanable.

I'm not a huge fan of the action plot, but it held together. Indeed, it's eerily prescient on the problems of a global supply chain when bad actors emerge. And I like how Bowen leaves it undefined whether or not the bad guy was a state player or "just" a criminal enterprise. And yes, you can infer from all that that the plot is intricate, important, and well-depicted. I'm just not a fan of suspense in my romance and while I wouldn't call this "Romantic Suspense" as a category, it had enough to ping my reflexive concern.

Anyway, this ends with a solid four stars and I really like how well it turned out. Eric at the end . I'm torn on whether or not I'll pursue the Company series as it seems designed for lots of those elements that I'm not such a fan of (suspense).

A note about Steamy: This got drawn out over a couple of weeks so I lost count of the explicit sex scenes. There are more than a few, but not a ton. So the middle of my steam tolerance and all lend well to the emotional/intimacy arc of the characters.

Do you like romance with a little hockey? How about a side of intrigue and a bit of suspense? If you answered yes, you’re going to LOVE Moonlighter by Sarina Bowen! Take all of that, throw in a grumpy hockey player turned bodyguard and a high-tech billionaire CEO, and you have the makings of one of my favorite books by Sarina Bowen to date.

The first book in the Brooklyn Bruisers spin-off series, The Company, features Eric, the Bruiser who is roped into protecting a female tech billionaire—who just so happens to be a long-lost childhood friend—by his brother and father, who make big bucks with their super-secret high-end security firm.

Eric may be getting older, especially for the demanding sport of hockey, but he isn’t quite ready to give up the sport just yet. Alex is a soon-to-be single mom who needs protection from her abusive ex-boyfriend. When she needs personal security for a conference in Hawaii, Eric is ‘persuaded’ to help. Five days in Hawaii with an old frenemy/fake boyfriend/hot hockey player is almost too much for poor Alex’s hormones, especially since there is only one bed and their chemistry is off the charts.

Eric and Alex are amazing together. Their banter and humor are perfect, as is the suspenseful angle to the story. The fake dating/forced proximity trope is always fun and I enjoyed their playfulness with one another. It’s sweet and sexy and steamy, and there are a couple of heart-melting moments that I adored.

While this is a stand-alone, fans of the Brooklyn Bruisers series will be happy to see a lot of favorite characters make cameos. I think the first book in the new series is a strong start and introduces an intriguing cast of new characters. I have a few that I can’t wait to see if they get their own book and I’m curious to see how one of the underlying plotlines from Moonlighter plays out over the course of the next book(s).
