Yuri Sorenson #1

Not Another Statistic

Rate this book
Former Federal Agent Yuri Sorenson had left the bureau behind to become a private investigator. A friend from his old life came to him with a favor, not knowing who else to trust. Yuri had always had a way of keeping his emotional distance from the people he protected, yet that changed the day Clarkson hesitantly limped into his life.

What happens when love is confused with pain? That’s the exact question Josh Clarkson had asked himself for years. He’d grown up in an overburdened foster care system, and from what he knew of love, he couldn’t expect anything but to be something tolerated. Was he meant to be more than a plaything or a piece of scenery; he could hope.

Two men who know nothing but being broken find that patience and acceptance are harder than losing hope. Is the leap of faith worth the reward of letting someone else in? Maybe they’ll find the strength to find out before the danger of Josh’s past tries to tear them apart.

This is the first in a series with continuing main characters. It's a HEA with no Cliffhangers.

Action packed - which kept the pages turning. I like age gap and this one hit the right spots - a vulnerability to the "boy" that felt real but some strength behind it. One of the secondary characters I hope gets his own book because he seems like he has a strong story - a bit of a darker character who is one thing on the surface and something else deep down.

Daddy Yuri ❤️

When I read that JM was writing a new book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. They have yet to disappoint when it comes to men that make your heart ache. Whether it’s the yum factor or the sadly realistic portrayal of abused and tragic. I hadn’t read the blurb until I pre-ordered. I just knew they had a PI series coming out with a Daddy/boy dynamic that I picked up from their group page. And honestly? The blurb didn’t really hook me. Maybe it’s because I’ve read so many books this week and got into a book funk where I had more DNFs than finished. I’m not sure, but I was kinda “meh” going into this one. That being said, 10/10 exceeded expectations. You guys!! Daddy Yuri is my new book bf. Legit. He started out as this cranky, world-weary, just retired FBI jerkface. IMO he ended the book the same way too. Lol. Only difference was that he was a cranky, world-weary, retired FBI jerkface with a baby boy that brought him a joy he’d been lacking. I can dig a man that puts the needs of his baby boy above his own. He didn’t back down, he didn’t bend, he held strong and he helped a broken man transform into a slightly less broken man. Mental health ain’t no joke. And Josh? He needed his Daddy Yuri. I think what I liked best about this book was the fact that Josh got the help he needed. He had a great support system in place with Arianne and Yuri. Finding better coping mechanisms for the darkness that eats as you is a battle in itself when all you want to do is sink into it. The journey isn’t over for Josh. It may take years before he recognizes his own worth completely. And I know someone that reads this may think that his dependency on Yuri is stretching it cause he should stand on his own two feet or whatever. But here’s the thing, there’s no reason to go it alone when you got someone like Daddy Yuri to hold you up. My take away from this book? There’s no shame on having or wanting or needing someone to center you when you can’t do it yourself. This world is hard enough and our demons are brutal. No matter if you’re the Yuri or the Josh, or even the Arianne, grab that person you need and cling to the solace they provide because anyone that’s ever had that demon, whether it’s through abuse, neglect, or your own mind, knows that it’s always gonna be there. All you can do is take the comfort when you find it. So yeah, philosophical segue aside, I’m gonna say this one’s worth the read. *side note for the grammar snobs like me* Only came across a few which looked more like formatting issues than actual shoddy editing so I still 5 ⭐️ this one

The pacing of this romance seemed so right to me and it could have been very, very wrong on so many levels. Josh is so broken and Yuri could have taken advantage of that but thankfully the book didn't go that route. A bit of a police type drama mixed with romance in just the right amounts. I really liked this and can't wait for the next one.

I’ve been on such a suspense kick lately and this one was one hit after another, it had me on my toes. So, as the title suggests, we have Yuri, an almost retired cop turned PI who’s running out of funds and needs to figure out what he’s going to be doing…. all that, when his ex-partner West drops by with an unsuspecting case in the form of a broken down and badly abused man, Josh.

Josh has been used and abused for what seems like his whole life so when a Senator’s son keeps him locked away for his sick enjoyment, he’s only too happy to get away by chance and has to go into hiding until the trial to put the twisted, evil man away. Unfortunately, like anyone with a little bit of power, he controls the very people designed to help keep him safe, so he doesn’t know who to trust. That’s where West comes in and takes him to Yuri.

Yuri doesn’t trust West and to be honest, I don’t either, even still at the end. What he said and his little “joke” to Josh, it didn’t feel like a joke to me and I hate that Yuri even a little bit trusted him. A “joke” like the one he made was awful, especially given Josh’s history. Had I been Josh, I’d have maybe taken a shot at his knee caps or his jaw bone or something….

So, while Yuri hated his job at first, he couldn’t help but fall for the younger, tortured man, even when he was trying to do what’s best for him. I loved how Josh came into his own the more he felt safe with Yuri, it wasn’t hard to fall for him. I also liked how Josh wanted to do what he could to help Yuri too, it wasn’t one-sided, even though Josh needed a little bit extra for the time being. I loved the people Josh had on his side, too. Arianna especially, she reminded me a lot of Peaches.

I cannot wait to see what happens with Kluge…doesn’t he just seem perfect? I really hope we see more from him and maybe West, if he’s gonna be around for a while, he can redeem himself and at least apologize for the horrible way he treated Josh. Either way, I was happy to see that all is well that ended well, I kind of wished for a more karmic justice for the Senator and his son, but, there’s always next time, eh? I don’t think it’s the last we’ll be seeing or hearing from those two. I’m very much looking forward to what’s next.

Great start to what I know will be an awesome new series!

There are so many things wrong with this book that I don’t even know where to start. The logical part of me wants to give this book one star because it really doesn’t make sense. But the part of me that is run by emotion, that likes hurt/comfort stories and loves daddy kink books, wanted to rate it higher.

But I have to be logical in my review. There’s so much that’s left unsaid in this book. At the beginning, Yuri is pretty cold/rude to Josh, who has suffered such horrific abuse. And then you get to about 20% and they both love each other. What? I actually had to go back and check if I missed something. I thought there was no way they could have suddenly both thought in their heads how much in love with each other they are when there was no outward communication, flirtation, or getting to know each other.

Also, the abuse Josh suffered was difficult to read. And unfortunately, his character was one dimensional. He was written as a product of abuse and nothing more.

And don’t even get me started on the D/S. I love those kinds of books just like the next girl, but when somebody has suffered such horrific abuse and you throw them into a D/S relationship with NO COMMUNICATION beforehand, no safe words discussed -- AND it includes physical punishment with someone who has been physically abused their whole life… I just didn’t buy that Josh was suddenly loving that and able to separate that from what he went through without any therapy whatsoever.

And then there’s the actual mystery/court case/them running away from murderers… I was so confused about the decision making, about why they were hiding in a hotel, about who they could trust, and why they were out and about some days and hiding like the world was after them on other days.

Confusing and unfortunate.

This was slightly different than what I am used to from J.M. but I really enjoyed it all the same. I'm picky on what "mystery, investigator, bodyguard" type book I pick up but after reading the rest of J.M.'s books, I knew I needed this.

Yuri was a really great guy, a gruff and realistic character, which is one of the biggest reason’s I love J.M.’s writing. Their characters are not at unrealistic weights, they are not perfect and things don’t get magically fixed just because they get with a guy. It's always refreshing to see the “flawed” get HEAs. Yuri was one of the best "Daddies" I have read this year.

Josh was a wonderful character; his reactions to not just the horrible things taking place in the courtroom, but to Yuri and his gruff and grumbly personality, were great. His pain and his fear had me turning pages faster so I could get the answers I needed regarding their safety.

The ending of this was perfect in my opinion. It was sweet with the right amount of sassy brattiness thrown in.

I can't wait for book two so I can dive right in!

I have to say that it’s taken me a bit to really get into this story, which is rare for me as I’ve been a HUGE fan of JM’s for a while now and that I’ve loved her books and can easily get lost in her worlds. However, once I finally sat down and started again from the beginning…I was hooked and finished the book within a couple of hours.

I really enjoyed Yuri’s character. I liked that this man could be a complete and utter ass, but with Josh…he was so patient and so damn sweet…yet he allowed Josh to grow within himself and find his own way. Yuri is that broken-down, weary retired FBI agent who just wants normal…less stressful assignments and when his old partner comes to him for help…let’s just say…it wasn’t hearts and flowers.

Josh…wow…this poor guy just had my heart hurting with all that he’s been thru in his life. That this young man was so starved for affection and love that he’d take the abuse that was thrown his way in an attempt to convince himself that it was affection and love, broke my heart. I will say that even though Josh had gone thru so many hardships, that I really enjoyed seeing him grow as a character. Josh still has so far to go, but to see that growth in himself and what he wanted…that was damn near one of the best moments.

This story has it all, action, romance, twists and turns and once I got into it…it just sped a long and I was a bit taken back that the story was over. I mean, I’m so happy to see that this is an ongoing series and we’ll get to see more of these characters, because I feel that their story is truly just beginning. That not only with new cases, but the characters’ growth both as a couple, but as individuals as well.

I have to say that this book was a slow burn, which I’m not a huge fan of…but it worked with these characters and the dynamics of the Daddy/boy relationship that these two men are beginning. I truly liked that Yuri really took his time…he allowed some of his Daddy out and that helped Josh…but he kept the sex part out of it.

Well worth it to grab this book and settle in for some wonderful action and romance. J.M. does it again. You won’t regret getting this book.

I loved this book! This is my first by the author and I look forward to reading more. (Although I am sad to see that they don't seem to be writing anymore.) The story was so well told, the dialogue was perfect for the characters, and the daddy kink slowly and naturally developed. I loved Yuri. (The book cover is exactly as I picture him.) He was so grumpy and surly at the beginning, but he couldn't resist the quiet, resilient Josh. The suspense was fast paced and there were several interesting secondary characters. I would really love to see this become a multi-book series. Yuri and Josh's relationship was just beginning. Fingers crossed that one day the author will release book 2.

Interesting read

Not a bad read. A wee bit different then my normal reads but still an interesting story of a boy man who got himself beaten to within an inch of death who decides to prosecute the beater so no one else is ever threatened. Safe houses get compromised and many shots are fired. He meets an honorable man who shows him how he should be treated. We have a bad cop, a reporter who digs up treasures, a Senator who wants to be President and a son who hangs off his Dad's coat tails. A trial, missing witness, and other shenanigans all for a happy ending.

Good Read

I felt sorry for the young character in this story his life was that of many runaways and homeless kids on the streets, however, the main character was not much better as far as childhood goes. The ending made the book worth reading.

"Sex and politics were a recipe for being six-feet-under." ~Yuri

Who's ready for heat, mystery and all the Daddy you can ask for? Going in, once again, into the kinky mind of J.M. Dabney, I knew Daddy was the theme and truthfully, I've learned not to let it bother me, as long as it's done tastefully.

What was it about "Not Another Statistic" that drew me in? It was the fact that Yuri wasn't just a former Federal agent, but he had walked away from it all when it was getting beyond his control. With age gap, there was also a true submissive who had no reason to believe he deserved the best in life. Josh thought at one point: "Did I need to be hurt to feel loved or normal? Looking back on my short life, I realized every whispered loving word was confessed after a beating or punishing sex. When did natural and loving become associated with physical and emotional pain?"

"One day you're going to find a new normal." ~Arianna

With three attempts made on his life, did Josh Clarkson have a chance of survival if not for Yuri Sorenson? Getting caught up with a politically influential was supposed to be good for his life, but when Josh found himself near death, he knew survival was key. But with another hit on his life, can Josh survive the gruff man he'd been placed with to get him to courthouse alive?

It felt as if I'd waited a lifetime to finally come home. ~Yuri

This was a truly remarkable story, bringing in Josh's growth and development. Even though he could get bratty, Yuri was there to teach him the err of his ways and prove to him that pain did not mean love. The pacing left me out in the cold, but the author eventually got it right later on in the book so that I was aware of the time that had passed. The secondary characters helped fold the story along as well as the the case that needed to be solved. I enjoyed both main characters individually, and even more together. I cannot wait for the next books in this series. I am not even mad at the HFN because we get more of these guys coming soon.

When you feel how in love the author is with the book!

I’m so flipping excited for everyone to experience Not Another Statistic! Why? Not only are My babies Daddy Yuri and his broken winged birdie Josh flipping fantastic! But because do you know how refreshing it is to be able to feel the authors love energyand excitement through a book?! Even during the sadder times? Jami Dabney was and is so excited about this series you feel it in the damn writing! It made me all giddy inside and I can’t wait for y’all to feel that!

Jami writes real life and not real like we think we read in books or see in movies but day to day life. That smiling and laughing doesn’t mean anything has changed. Where we have trust issues. Well all sorts of issues that just don’t disappear overnight! Where we share our beds with our demons because sometimes it’s them who keep us warm on our coldest nights. Where it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to be fucking broken. Where it’s okay to love with every little broken piece we have, even if most days we don’t love ourselves.

And they write daddy kink in a way that is real! And no just constant sex sex sex. Daddy’s main job is to protect and grow their littles as people. To help them navigate big scary life.

Not Another Statistic has all of that. It’s fucking REAL. And I’m so excited for everyone to read them and for what comes next!!!!!!

“sometimes we don't get normal”

Yuri left his federal job behind to start a PI business. His first case was brought to him by his ex partner, a man he just doesn’t trust. Josh has been abused his whole life. He’s the latest victim of a slimy senators son. Not having any other option he agrees to testify. When his life is threatened he goes into witness protection. That brings the him into Yuri’s protective care.

Yuri protects Josh to the best of his ability. The fragile young man has no reason to trust anyone but Yuri burrows under his defenses. As they work to keep Josh alive they grow closer and both men worry that what they are beginning to feel may not be real.

I feel like this is a different style of book for this author. They do write broken people really well. Even though this book dealt with abuse I felt it was still a hopeful story. I liked the characters (even the ex partner). The daddy/boy dynamic was well done. I really liked Yuri’s protectiveness of Josh and that he was willing to let his boy go if that was what he needed.

I absolutely loved this story!!! Yuri is a retired cop ready to start his new career as a PI. His old partner West gives him is first job....taking care of Josh before his trial. Josh has been abused and mistreated for what seems to be his entire life...he knows no other way of life. He doesn't know who to trust, how to feel and he just feels lost and unsettled. Yuri doesn't trust West at all but there is something about Josh that unsettles Yuri and he doesn't quite know what to think about the feelings that Josh makes him feel. The more time they spend together, Yuri can't help but to fall for Josh. Josh adores Yuri and likes how he makes him feel safe. Can they make things work for them while trying to stay ahead of the game and most importantly alive? This book was amazing and I highly recommend this book to all. I can't wait for more Yuri and Josh stories....well done!!!

Is it considered a trope?

As it turns out, if I was ever in the mood to read a book that contains some type of sexual abuse, all I have to do is look to this author. So, is it considered a trope then? I mean, I can't think of any of her books that don't have it in some way, shape or form. Is it my preference? Not really. This book also had a ton of repetition, and useless details. Is it necessary to write that he closed the passenger side door of a car, walked around, opened his door, sat down, etc ? Not unless you need to hit your word count aka it's useless filler. The characters were the usual, not really any different than any others from her books, which makes the book, the characters and her style boring, predictable, and unimaginative. Not sure she can write anything other than a damaged "boy" and a gruff older man.

A butterfly is born

Oh my heart. Not another statistic by J.M. Dabney ripped my heart to pieces and knit it back together again slowly but beautifully. Josh is broken but so very brave; he never gave up. Yuri comes off as gruff but his heart is so big.

Their journey to be together was slow but true to what they both needed. Anything else would have felt forced and fake to me. I loved how protective and careful Yuri was with Josh and how he always, always put his needs first. With Josh, watching him learn how to become himself was a stunning metamorphosis.

A truly beautiful story and I look forward to seeing how their relationship grows in the next book.

Exciting new series

JM Dabney gives us a New series and it is delicious.
Yuri Sorenson a retired agent starts his own PI business and his first case is witness protection of a boy who has survived the worst beating of his life.
JM Dabney writes writes raw broken people in their true honest form. They give us a great Daddy/boy beginning relationship, wrapped in a story of a boy fighting ugly bad powerful men for his life with Yuri on his side. Learning that surviving takes strength and courage. And that even broken people can be loved. I am excited to see what comes next.

This series is going to be epic

J.M. Dabney writes broken so well. she takes these characters to the very brink and finds a way to build them back up, while still embracing the things that broke them in the first place. Her words and books always remind me that what we think makes us weak or not worthy may actually be our strength and the very thing someone may love is for. I cannot wait for more Yuri and Josh and to see how Josh grows and finds himself.

I’m finding myself drawn more towards Daddy kink than I expected. This author does Daddy kink right and when this author had a new Daddy kink series I jumped at the chance to read it. I love the dynamic of Daddy Yuri and Josh’s relationship. This author paced the romance well because Yuri could have taken advantage of Josh so many times. With the suspense and intrigue the author has another hit on their hands!! I can’t wait for the next installment of this series!!
