Goku’s adventure from the best-selling classic manga Dragon Ball continues in this new series written by Akira Toriyama himself!
Ever since Goku became Earth’s greatest hero and gathered the seven Dragon Balls to defeat the evil Boo, his life on Earth has grown a little dull. But new threats loom overhead, and Goku and his friends will have to defend the planet once again in this continuation of Akira Toriyama’s best-selling series, Dragon Ball!
The greatest warriors from across all of the universes are gathered at the Tournament of Power. Kale, a Saiyan from Universe 6, is on a rampage that’s leading to the erasure of one universe after another. Meanwhile, Goku and the five remaining fighters from Universe 7 are still intent on surviving the battle and saving everything and everyone they know!
Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
A good book. This book is a battle royal of action. So many fights going on at the same time it is hard to keep up with or do them all justice.
The tournament of power continues. I forgot in the comic world of super, they did not do the Resurrection F saga. It was just mentioned, so this is the real debut of Golden Freeza. Where the anime was all about bigger power levels and explosions this does show more technique. An example is the coverted Ultra Instinct is a highly evolved martial arts technique.
I would have given this 4.5 stars but rounded it down on just a couple of points. Two of the most iconic fight of the anime are not done in the comic. Kefla Vs Goku, I would not mind if the replacement was shown fully. Vegeta Vs Top was a great moment for Vegeta but it is brushed off here. I do like that power level are important but technique and skill has a place as well. It is coming to the final bring it on.
EN After the epic battles of Dragon Ball Z, I never thought it would be possible to surpass them. Dragon Ball Super hadn’t managed to do it until now, but this Tournament of Power is simply spectacular — some of the best this franchise has ever offered.
This entire volume is dedicated to that arc, and it’s still not over. I’m loving the interactions between the warriors from the different universes and the surprises that come from them.
I’m really curious to see how it will all end, although I already have my suspicions.

So this is wildly different than the anime. Much quicker paced and far more interesting fights. Watching Kale verse Gohan is great, Vegeta being a badass, and Goku getting his shit wrecked is all much more entertaining in the manga TBH. I also enjoyed the pacing as everything happens so quick and it feels like the plot is moving quickly.
I did miss Goku amazing finisher on kale but the rest is good and the fights are very entertaining. Hope this finishes up well and jump on to the next arc next volume. A 4 out of 5.
By far the best volume so far in the franchise. This is where Dragon Ball Super truly finds its footing and delivers original content without relying too much on nostalgia to win over fans.
Not only does it focus a lot of fights, it also has captivating dialogue that moves the plot forward while developing its characters. In fact, key characters like Goku and Jiren embrace their perspectives on perfection and exchange some of the most interesting insights on their beliefs.
Better than previous volumes, character moments like those Mr. Roshi's moves is what I wanted to see at this stage, it has been ages since the series honors martials arts, long gone are the tactics and the special moves, it's all about new power levels, I bet we get a new one on the next volume (edit: we did!).
All right, now we're talking. This is by far the best volume of DB Super that I've read - a wonderful comeback to the origins, with a lot more focus on martial arts philosophy. It gets special points for directing the limelight on Muten Roshi - I've not expected this, and it was such a wonderful, beautiful moment: paying homage to the concept of the bond between the master and the apprentice, but also highlighting the philosophy of martial arts as a mechanism, a medium leading to holistic self-improvement. Not perfection, as perfection is only the unattainable goal, but constant, conscious improvement. Kame Sen'nin gets his redemption moment here, no more dirty old geezer stuff, but some hard-earned wisdom instead. Go, Turtle Master!
I love that after so many weak installments focused on different colored hair and new Saiyan transformations we're getting back to basics - and all the various wise masters of Goku get their little cameos. Plus, Ultra Instinct looks cool ;) There are also some other great moments, Gohan, and even Vegeta - and this volume further emphasizes the differences between Goku and Vegeta when it comes to their philosophy of being-in-the-world and their worldviews (which makes the whole family/friends stuff from earlier DBS volumes even more incongruent and simply dumb).
Gohan got eliminated which is a bit disappointing, especially considering his evolution. He doesn’t rely on the Super Saiyen transformation anymore, and it’s really interesting. I wonder how far he could take it if he had the same drive to fight as Vegeta and Goku. I am mad about C-17’s sacrifice, though. He did it for nothing and we won’t get to see his character develop and accomplish other feats anymore. It’s a pity - I really liked him.
Good book. Finally feels like the fight is feeling good like the old books. I cannot do this free for all story lines. I simply do not care about all the millions of characters.
Gave up and added a "hype" shelf because I need something for all the shit that stands out for making me choke up like a dumbass nerd at some wacky shounen battle manga powerup bullshit because god damn do I love Dragon Ball.
So, basically, this is the volume where Ultra Instinct is introduced, and it's just beautiful. I guess. When UI was first teased in the anime, I thought it was weird that we were going backward from the red and blue hair colors. And then Son Goku got fucking silver hair, and I felt it was weird we were going back to the colorful hair. And Mr. Popo taught Goku to turn his brain off and allow his body to move itself a loooooooooooong time ago. UI is basically Kenshiro's Buddha shit in Fist of the North Star. Kind of a ripoff. BUT it's also awesome because so many Weekly Shounen Jump series have ripped off the escalating Saiyan transformations that it's disgusting (pretty sure Naruto Uzumaki has like 15 forms), so really the only way to go is backward. Battle manga used to be two schools: Hokuto no Ken and Saint Seiya (or so we'll say for simplicity's sake). Dragon Ball began with more martial arts focus, but then started getting zany with Super Saiyan stuff, which wasn't too different from higher-level Cloths from Saint Seiya. Goku gets so strong that Toriyama gave his editor the middle finger with SS3's dumb hair. Then Goku gets God Ki and becomes skinny and his hair turns red. Then we just get Super Saiyan Blue. Now Goku is on the verge of dismissing Super Saiyan transformations in favor of the UI "technique," which allows Vegeta to stay on the Super Saiyan line and master Blue in this same volume (getting a full aura of blue flames rather than the toothpaste chunks of previous Blue), and Gohan dismissing his Saiyan blood entirely to strengthen himself as a human (though really his Mystic form should count as God Ki, but fuck it).
I've unfortunately seen too many arguments on the Internet regarding whether or not UI is a "transformation" or if it is simply a "technique." We might argue the whitish hair highlights and irises are less a physical transformation and more an aesthetic effect to show the clarity of Goku's mind. But then his hair will soon turn silver and it's harder to argue that Mastered UI isn't just a flat new form. I think we're believing Angels are always in UI, hence their white hair. My headcanon is that Goku's silver hair is an example of a mortal's take on UI, just as a mortal Saiyan has blue hair while activation Super Saiyan with God Ki, whereas the divine Zamasu has pink hair as Super Saiyan Rose Goku Black. Activating God Ki isn't necessarily a transformation, I wouldn't say. You flip a switch, God Ki turns on, and the consequence is you lose muscle mass and your hair and eyes turn red. Which is basically a transformation, but it's more "natural" than the manufactured forms of SS2 and 3, for example. SS Blue counts as a transformation because it can only be just that; it involves going SS, which is undeniably a transformation. So maybe when a Saiyan masters UI it does something to the hair and eyes and makes them silver, but I think the simpler "Sign" version is more a "technique." Not that it really matters, just I like to overthink stuff about Dragon Ball, like my SS2 essay for a previous Super volume.
Anyway, I choked up when Goku first when UI -Sign-, then I choked up when Juunana-gou "sacrificed himself," then when Goku did UI again.
Oh, wait, I also wanted to talk about the U6 Saiyan girls. We've only previously seen Fasha in the non-canon Bardock special, and then the noncombatant Gine who is Goku's mom. Planet Vegeta is mostly a sausage fest, if for no other reason than that shounen battle manga are sausage fests. I guess it's really hard to make women fighters cool, or otherwise it's that these sort of manga are meant to appeal to 12-year-old boys and Japanese middle-schoolers just want to see strong dudes kick the shit out of each other? This is a strange part about shounen battle manga, because when I was 12 everyone liked Orihime and Yoruichi and Rangiku in Bleach. Basically just because they were hot. The latter two got to fight a little, but they were ultimately overshadowed by male characters. As a kid, one wants to see more male characters I guess for the power fantasy. In pubescence, one wants to see big fat cartoon titties and stuff, while still enjoying the fantasy violence, but I guess no one ever cares to combine the two. It's weird that there are so many "battle harem" light novels and yet so few shounen manga with strong female fighters. Kale and Caulifla were kinda just shoehorned into Super for the coomers. I think they were actual Toei ideas rather than Toriyama's own, but the point is it's pretty clear they won't get to do much cool shit, especially since the male U6 Saiyan Cabba is just a twig himself. In the anime, we see Caulifla asspull a SS2 form shortly after Cabba teaches the basic SS level. Also in the anime, Kale is more obviously a female Broly, as her muscle mass is comically oversized. Good on Toyotarou for toning it down a bit, but bad for all parties involved for sticking with the dumb "Legendary" moniker, as if to further diminish the merits of Goku being the first canon Super Saiyan. It's weird that Kale is a Broly ripoff when Broly would later be canonized in the new movie (even weirder since this volume has an interview at the end about Toriyama's designs for the Broly movie), but it's partly balanced by creating the Potara fusion Kefla, who is just a fit woman in yoga pants rather than a She-Hulk. Caulifla, Kale, and Kefla are all cute, but immensely underutilized, which is par for the course for Dragon Ball. It's funny to see all of MegaHouse's "Dragon Ball Gals" figures of Juuhachi-gou when she hardly does anything in the series. She's been in a bunch of video games for little reason other than to meet a quota for having at least one female character. Good on Kefla for getting into Dragon Ball FighterZ, but it's hardly an accomplishment when this game gave us the coomer-friendly Majin 21 (in fairness, I'm something of a coomer myself, and so enjoy both Kefla and 21).
I complained in my review for Volume 7 that the ToP introduces too many characters just to do nothing with them. LSS Kale is a good plot device for greatly cutting the roster down to size. She's a bad plot device because the ease with which she takes everyone out and the ease with which she's subdued ("dude just put a Potara on her lmao") combine to prompt the question "Why not just have a smaller roster to begin with?" But whatever, this shit's mostly fun anyway.

EDIT (09/19/2024): Nothing to add, actually ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This one was so cool as we have the fights going on, Caulifla fights Freeza and is getting battered and as she sees her sister getting pummeled, something awakens in Kale and she goes into berserk form like Broly and attacks everyone and single handedly destroys Universe 2,3,4 and 10 and just shows her super powers but then berserk means she attacks her team mates and so Kefla fusion happens which is my favorite one but it felt rushed and then we have her fight Gohan which was super and their fights ends well and now only few people remain! Goku has this great moment where Kame-senin is fighting Jiren and dodging his attacks and teaches Goku something and awakens the ULTRA INSTINCT i him, though not perfect the way their fight goes is amazing and they fight but then Pride troppers all get knocked down and its upto Jiren to fight and save his universe, 17 self destructs but Goku vs Jiren, the final fight is on and its so cool! Really well done volume and the clash of the titans is showing! This volume was so cool and so many fights, awesome moments for some characters and tragic endings for some and a big power up for Goku and the art perfectly exhibited that!!

I have a lot of mixed feelings for this volume. On one hand all the fighting didn't read the cleanest; I'm sure it's much more epic in the anime to see the fighting instead of trying to find the flow through the panels. On the other though, it had some scenes and dialogue that felt like classic DBZ that I've loved and been missing. Watching Kale and Caulifla was something I'd longed for since I was a kid, female super saiyans! And I wish there had been a moment to really build the tension of Kale losing herself but it was a rough patch job of getting to Ultra Instinct. Which to me really cheapened this volume that it'll once again be Goku saving the day against Jiren. It could have been Roshi, 17, or even Vegeta to make an epic final blow as they were given amazing scenes building up to them...falling short. Annoying.
But I'm glad they're wrapping up this tournament arc, gotten a bit stale honestly.
Just like with the anime, this series even in the manga has such a way of hyping you up and then seemingly holding off on the biggest events right on the last page. I get though that that’s how you get people like myself crawling back for the next volumes but still. It’s crazy how much action the middle two chapters can contain only to have the final be like oh wait just kidding now everyone’s actually going to kick it into high gear once again!
Good stuff, though not a fan of the "big 'bad'", Jiren. Hope the next one won't drag on too much on him explaining his point of view, cause it already feel meh.
4.9 Stars. This volume was so close to being amazing. From the first glimpses of ultra instinct to the reveal of SSJ Blue Evolution everything was great. However Kale and Caulifia dominating 4 universes was entertaining until the defeat of the universe 6 Namikians. I would have much rather seen them fuse and fight someone along the lines of Gohan or someone. All in all a fantastic volume but could have been a little better.
VOLUME 8: CHAPTER 37-40 Arc 4: Tournament of Power Saga
Frieza turned to Golden Frieza and fight two Saiyans from Universe 6, Cabbe and Caulifla. Cabbe and Caulifla nearly defeated then another Saiyan, Kale join the fight. She turned into Super Saiyan and going rampage. She managed to eliminate all fighters from Universe 2, 3, 4 and 10 resulting to their universes being erased. Kale is the Legendary Super Saiyan that will appears once in 1,000 years. Kale is attacking the Universe 11 team. Caulifla have Potara earring that she will use to fuse with Cabbe. Suddenly, Kale was tossed out from the ring. Cabbe save Kale and put the earring at Kale's ear and he was eliminated. Caulifla fused with Kale and become Kefla. They managed to eliminate 6 fighters from Universe 11. Gohan appears to fight Kefla.
Tournament of Power have 15 minutes left. The fighters that still fighting are: Universe 6: Kefla (Kale and Caulifla) Universe 7: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Frieza, Android #17 and Master Roshi Universe 11: Jiren, Toppo, Dyspo, Kahseral
Gohan fights Kefla without using Super Saiyan. They were equal in strength and both of them were eliminated by each other. Vegeta is fighting Toppo, Android #17 is fighting Dyspo, Master Roshi is fighting Kahseral and Goku is fighting Jiren. Master Roshi managed to eliminate Kahseral. He then shows Goku what he needs to achieve higher. Master Roshi fights Jiren and he managed to dodge some attack before he was eliminated. Goku then unlocks Ultra Instinct, the ultimate technique that severs the link between consciousness and body, allowing one to dodge any attack subsconsiously. Goku managed to fight equally with Jiren but the Ultra Instinct wear off instantly. Furious with Goku's level, Vegeta knocked Toppo nearly out from the ring and fight Jiren but he was defeated. Frieza take the chance to eliminate Toppo who hanging on the floating rubble. Dyspo trying to save Toppo but they floating far away from the arena. Jiren let both of them to be eliminated. Frieza fights Jiren in his golden form but still cannot defeat Jiren. Android #17 self-destruct himself to take out Jiren and managed to destroy half of the arena. Jiren is still in the game.
Jiren, Frizer, Siedemnastka i w końcu Goku z Vegetą. Mimo to w momencie, gdy Roshi tuż przed wyrzuceniem z areny przypomniał Goku to, czego go uczył…
The Tournament of Power continues in this Volume and I was surprised at how different than the anime it was, though Dragon Ball has always taken longer on the anime than the manga. Changes and Highlights: - Debut of Golden Freeza vs SSJ Caulifla - Unveil of Legendary Super Saiyan Kale... after which she singlehandedly takes out the remaining fighters from Universes 3, 4, 2, and 10 - Caulifla reveals she has a pair of Potara Earrings and she fuses with Kale (to help tame her urges) and becomes Kefla - Gohan (admitting he no longer will go SSJ) vs Kefla... they knock each other of the ring - With Kefla down, Universe 6 is eliminated - Goku vs Jiren, but interrupted by Master Roshi who teaches Goku he still doesn't move properly - Roshi vs Jiren... and he holds his own for a bit! - Roshi's defeat leads to first obtaining of Ultra Instinct for Goku - When Goku is knocked out of Ultra Instinct, the rage at him achieving it first brings a strong pride and anger to Vegeta and he holds his own against Jiren for a bit - Freeza vs. Top and Dyspo, Freeza survives - Android 17 tries to self-destruct on Jiren, blows up half the ring, doesn't defeat Jiren
Lots different but I would have loved to see Roshi's fight as well as Kale unleashed even more than she was on the anime. Oh well... Great Volume. Looking forward to the next, which ends the Tournament AND moves past where the anime left off. Strong recommend.
The Tournament of Power rages on! Freeza and Kale take center stage in this volume as their exploits are noteworthy and page stealing! There are only 5 remaining heroes from Universe 7, and it will not be easy to make it out of this tournament a winner! I would be remiss if I didn't say Master Roshi's pages really steal the show! (GREAT STUFF!!!) The more he is in volumes, the more I like Jiren (from Universe 11). The art and the pacing of this volume are all top notch! My review might seem light, but I felt there wasn't as much substance in dialogue worth reviewing and rather the action really carries this volume.
9/10 kale and caulifla fuse to become kefla after kale loses control of her legendary super saiyan powers and demolishes all the other universes. Until they end up getting eliminated themselves. The only two universes left are jirens universe and goku’s. Jiren let his teammates get knocked out because he believes he’s better off alone. Master roshi puts up a fight against jiren for a short amount of time then gets eliminated. Android 17 self destructs in order to take jiren out but fails. Jiren is ready to go head to head with goku again.

Fun, fast paced action. This volume strikes a balance between classic and modern Dragon Ball storytelling. I love the art and all the different battles happening at once. I appreciate this volume much more after watching a few episodes of this arc from the anime and it feeling like mostly filler. This manga seems to be the definitive way to experience Dragon Ball Super (better writing, far superior pacing & Toyatoro’s art looks great, especially in comparison to the anime’s wonky animation)
