After ten years of loudly suffering, Aniyah’s family can’t excuse her obsession anymore. The only thing that will cure Aniyah is an intervention. During her intervention, Aniyah discovers that there are more pieces to the puzzle than she wants to admit. She isn't prepared for the journey to mental wellness. She realizes that she can’t just offer half of herself. Her deepest, darkest, oldest, foulest secrets must be laid out on the table. In an interVENTion, it's ALL... OR NOTHING...

First read by this author, and all I can say is, WOW! I went in expecting a story of a hovering, helicopter mom, and got so, so much more! This story touched on so many issues that are dealt with in the black community, and how often we get it wrong! Mental illness, alcoholism, racism, therapy, church, and karma.

Aniyah, was going hard for her son, wanting to do everything he did, and be everywhere he was. When her husband just dismissed all her hints to help with Elijah, I was stunned and a bit angry! 😡Until.....the pieces began to fall into place, and I was completely submerged into this storyline! 💔

I wondered why VENT stood out in the title. It became clear quickly, as that is one thing that we fail to do when suffering. We keep it all in, try to pray it away, ignore it, push it down into the recesses of our bodies, in hopes it will disappear! No! 🤬 Those feelings, thoughts, and emotions needs to be spoken aloud, talked about, felt and allowed to heal. Everyone around Aniyah thought they were doing her a favor by allowing her to fight her battles alone, but they did her the greatest disservice. She needed support, tough love and an intervention long before it was forced upon her.

This read was deep, eye-opening, and a bit therapeutic for those of us who have experienced any of these issues throughout our lives. I am still in awe of this powerful story! Great job!

A Mother's Love

This was my first read by this author and it definitely won't be my last. I will keep it short as not to post any spoilers. This book took a look at African Americans and how we typically handle mental illness. We don't. Mental illness can destroy marriages and relationships with friends and family. They tell you to pray about it and move on. This book made me cry and talk back to the book. It was an easy read thanks to the author's writing style. I think the message in this book is that you can have faith in a higher power but also realize that medical professionals are also there to aid you.

Straight to the Point

InterVENTion was a quick read. The author got right to the point of the book. The word “Vent” stands out because that is the constant in the book. Venting about what has been causing such pain for our main character and even the supporting characters.
Some takeaways for this book for me:
-you can have God AND a therapist
-unaddressed trauma can lay dormant, but when it’s awakened, watch out
-don’t be afraid to have the necessary, uncomfortable conversations with the people you love

While the author did a good job hitting a lot of talking points, a couple things didn’t tickle my fancy: the inclusion of the high school relationship with the older boy (it didn’t seem to fit the rest of the book) and sorry to say...the cover.

Overall, an enjoyable read.

I would've NEVER picked this book up based on the cover but, it was selected as our book of the month. Now that I've picked it up, I actually ENJOYED it!😉 The author tastefully covered many of the issues that our people are faced with daily. She created a great, relatable storyline that just made you want to keep reading. I'll definitely read more from this author.

I truly enjoyed this book especially how the author finished all of the intertwined untold stories. I was truly able to resonate with the healing power that is solely put into prayer. I truly enjoyed this book.

A few months ago, I shared a #FreeRead & within minutes it was selected for ALL of EyeCU Reading & Social Network to read. Now mind you...Our book club members give our selections careful consideration before bringing it to the group... Because we will tease you for like FOREVER if it ain’t good 😂 But FRESH off the click, Rhena was sure that this was “THE ONE!” And “The One” FOR ME it was!

It was almost too much but just what I needed! I finished the book on my son’s heavenly birthday and while I felt every bit of Aniyah’s pain & suffering it was also a therapeutic read. Reading this story was like having an EYE OPENING out of body look at how terrible things could have been had I not gone to therapy. It took me 2 long, agonizing years of pain, blame & suffering before I sought out help. This book made me revisit a lot of thoughts & emotions that I thought I had long put away. Had me in a full blown, Viola Davis, snotty nose, soul cleansing, UGLY CRY😢

B👏🏽R👏🏽A👏🏽V👏🏽O👏🏽!!! This was my first read by Jhordynn & SHE DID THAT! She gave us EVERYTHING IN THIS BOOK! SHE GAVE US a realistic & relatable read of undying love, hate, help, forgiveness, inspiration & Faith in Our Almighty Heavenly Father! Jhordynn has definitely gained a lil big mouth fan in me and I look forward to reading EVERYTHING she’s penned!

I HIGHLY SUGGEST READERS 1-Click NOW & see what ALL my hype is about!

Whewww!! Now this book was phenomenal. My new favorite book. There is so much I can say, but I will sum it up the best way possible.

The book gave me a moment of laughter, made me cry a few times, and think about my own healing. It touched my heart because I am a new mother to my son. It made me want to give my fiancé a hug and forget about all the trivial stuff! The complexity reminds me of my family when I was growing up. I loved the twists in the story and how it ended with such positivity. I thoroughly enjoyed how most of the character’s feelings and perspectives were acknowledged. This short story had so much depth within. It had a couple of twists and covered so many topics, especially topics that need to be highlighted in the Black community, such as mental health, colorism, and religion/spiritual beliefs. This book had me on the edge of my seat (no pun intended, as this phrase relates to one of the characters, and a seat)!

I would love to read more from this author. Jhordynn, keep doing what you’re doing!

A Mighty Message!

I can't believe I read this in one sitting. Once it grabbed me, it would not let go. I am writing this review with tears still in my eyes from the message that was delivered. We all need help sometimes and we as black people don't always get the proper help. I am grateful to this author for putting this work out in such a way that it CAN be heard. I definitely will be recommending this to friends and family. Thank you beautiful Jhordynn for your compassion, empathy and sharing your story with us.

First, I’ll say I completed this book in one sitting. Why? Because the story was that intriguing. This book was an eye-opener in more way than one for me personally. Things that we suppress, what secrets we keep from our past, damage one’s mental state to a point, reality is pushed aside and unhealthy and unrealistic mechanisms are put in its place. I felt so much compassion for Aniyah. Her issues went much further back than I realized. The author cleverly told a difficult story.

Healing

This is a very easy to read story. It touches on Mental illness in the Black community, racial issues and healing. I recommend this book to anyone working people dealing with any addiction. We learn to hide our feelings and emotions as Black women. This book gives the perfect example why we need to learn, and heal. Not hide. Great job author

Healing is hard

This book touched on so many "stigmas" in the community. This story tugs arty your heartstrings as a mother. Let's you see the turmoil pain causes everyone.

I must say if this book wouldn't have been selected as our monthly read, I surely would've missed out.

A Quick and Good Read!!

InterVENTion was a selected read for my bookclub. I found this quick read to be well written and thought out. The way the author, Jhordynn, twist and unfolds the story left my mouth open. I didn’t expect it even though it was right there in the pages.

Although interVENTion is a quick read, Jhordynn tackles the subject of mental illness that plagues the black community and shows how friends and family played a role in the main character’s downfall. A job well done. I look forward reading more from Jhordynn. I give this read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
