Chūya Koyama (小山宙哉) is a Japanese writer, best known for his Space Brothers series, published regularly since 2007.
On 2 November 2016 his artwork was carried into space by the H-IIA rocket carrying the Himawari-9 weather satellite as part of an outreach project organized by the Young Astronauts Club Japan
A very interesting volume. Until now, I have been pleasantly surprised by the tone and characters of this story in so far as the mood is just so wholesome when I always expect the worst of people in general (and even more so in this story where the MC has such lofty goals that are reserved for a handful (literally) of individual around the world).
I was thus very interested in the developments of this volume where the cast of characters is significantly broadened, and, particularly, where the cast evolves in a tense and competitive environment (literally a selection exam).
And indeed, we start to see the more calculating sides of people, the low blows etc that some are willing to dish out for their own gains. However, the author still nuances things ; the characters are not all bad. Actually, I would even say that he even pushes you to ask yourself if any of them are “all bad” ; he does so with the introduction of a red-herring character who appears to be a complete cunt at first, but then, as the story unfolds and you get to know him, you realise that his rudeness might actually be a mix of a sort of unreined honesty. My notes on him were as follows :
- That little cunt is so annoying. - I don’t know how but I’m growing to tolerate and even appreciate him??? Like he says he’s just really honest. - Nah the author got me with this monkey Ya-san. He’s rough around the edges but he has a good heart y’all
So, yes, great writing as always. Solid volume. As another reviewer has mentioned, this story always surprises me by how kind it is towards people it depicts.
Other notes throughout the volume:
- The little meaning of my name plot seems so off-handed and not particularly relevant but it hits so much for some reason - I am a two dimensional ant because I am not convinced by any answer given as to why space exploration is so necessary. Sorry Mutta - I wonder if Mutta will ever end up seeing Serika as more than a potential partner. She’s a beauty and she can cook? That’s it Mutta?
I always love this manga. Nevermind that it takes a bit of stretching of the imagination in some places, the characters and background research are very strong and it keeps me hooked. I’m also really loving this new challenge they all face, and I’m excited to see where it goes.
I'm thankful to have picked this series up while I'm finishing 'Twin Spica'. Makes it sting a little less. It's almost an expansion of that world, but more realistic than sentimental, like seeing those characters as adults. I'm enjoying its leisurely pace as well.
Troisième tome en vase clos, qui présente un groupe très attachant de candidats pour la conquête spatiale. Sans jamais rien révolutionner le récit fini toujours par me surprendre par sa bienveillance et son humanité.
So sloooooooow. Good thing the characters are fun and likable - even the antagonists. Still, I wonder if any of the heroes will actually go into space in the first ten volumes :)
"A two dimensional person who is so stuck in her ways will never understand through words the wonders of the third dimension." Taylor Swift fans and Kanye.
Possibly my favorite volume so far. I love the concept of this being a character study through the isolation of the astronaut candidates first on the bus, and in the isolation chambers. We've learned a lot about how the main characters interact with one another, their personal backgrounds, and how an astronaut is actually selected. This is a great manga!
Things are getting interesting here as Mutta goes into the third round of testing. I like that we’re starting to get to know some of the other astronaut candidates, and the group dynamics are fun to watch. Who will come out on top?
