So, Jenna's co-workers have to go out of town because of problems at work so their boss sends them on a wilderness hike, with our hero as a guide. I'll tell you why I'm not finishing this: Jenna comes along with her boyfriend and once they have their tent up she's on him like flies on shit. Lewis gets his but she doesn't. So she goes into the woods to pee and decides to 'finish herself off.' A perv follows her, Josh goes after the perv then stands there and listens to Jenna moan and groan until she done. Really? That's just stupid, especially since Jenna knows about the perv.
Also, I looked closer at the reviews on Amazon and found out this was a cliffhanger. I don't appreciate an author trying to make me buy a second or third book if I want to reach the end of the story.
At 34% I'm done. Not only with this book but with this author. I can't stand OW or OM so I'd be afraid she writes that in most of her books.
I've already told you about the sex so I'll just let you know the F-bomb was used 19 times.
As to the narrator: she was very good, with emotions and voices but that couldn't help this book.
Blurb: All Jenna wants is to grace the NYC skyline with a building of her design. But to do it, she must tear down a neighborhood riddled with dangerous criminals who will stop at nothing to claim vengeance.

***This is book one of a three book series and they should be read in order.
Jenna is an architect who has been working on a major new project along with the rest of her team. There is a slight issue with the location for their new building though - it is currently being used by criminals for a money laundering operation and the gang understandably don't want to see the property rebuilt. As things heat up and staff come under threat Jenna's whole team is sent away on a retreat in the middle of nowhere while their boss tries to resolve the issues. Josh is working as a guide for the company that organised the hiking retreat while he licks the wounds he received when working for the military. He doesn't like people much and would rather keep his distance from the world but when trouble comes calling he's exactly the kind of man you'd like to have at your back.
I'm a huge fan of K.F. Breene's Warrior Chronicles series so as soon as I heard about this series (written under pseudonym Willow Summers) it went straight to the top of my wish list. It's fair to say I had high expectations but unfortunately the story didn't quite live up to them. It's not a bad book by any means and I will continue the series but there were a few issues that stopped this from being an amazing read.
I think the main issue was the lack of suspense, for the majority of the book the only thing I was worried about was who was going to get attacked by Jenna's rapist-in-waiting colleague Dale. There was no buildup of tension, no real sense of danger and watching the group traipse around the countryside frankly started to get a bit boring. I get that the author was giving us time to get to know the characters but I think it could have been handled better. Another major no-go for me is the fact that that the hero and heroine had sex without using protection. It's even worse because she is on the trip with her boyfriend so she ends up having sex with two different men in a day and not using a condom with the guy she only just met! She does break up with the boyfriend first so she wasn't cheating but it's the lack of condom that really bothers me. The first time they have sex neither of them even think about protection and the second time they start with a condom but for some completely bonkers reason remove it halfway through and finish without it. What on earth was that all about? I'm now completely convinced that Jenna is going to end up pregnant before the end of the series but I'm really hoping I'll be proved wrong about that.
Also, let's backtrack and discuss Dale for a minute. He is an architect who is obviously working for a respectable company but the way he acts is beyond ridiculous and totally unacceptable. He stares at his female colleagues constantly making offensive comments and grabbing at them at every possible opportunity but nobody takes him to one side and tells him to stop? He is so bad that the women can't go anywhere unaccompanied because they genuinely fear that he will attack them and they even have to warn women from other groups to keep their distance and watch out that he doesn't follow them. I'm sorry but this just isn't acceptable, why was he even allowed on this trip in the first place if he can't be trusted to act like a normal human? Why wasn't he fired from his company years ago for sexual harassment? Why do we even need a character like him in the book except to add a sense of danger that isn't coming from anywhere else and to have a convenient target when things start to go wrong? I don't like the threat of rape being used as a cheap plot point when it doesn't add anything to the story, it makes me incredibly uncomfortable and I just don't think it's necessary.
So I've complained about a lot of things that didn't work for me in this book but there were positives too. I really liked Jenna's character, I appreciate a woman who knows what she wants and I like that she's so independent. She can be quite abrasive and holds herself a little distant from the people around her but it made a nice change to read about a heroine who doesn't feel the need to be liked by everyone around her. Josh was great too, he obviously has a lot of demons chasing him from his time in the military but at the moment he's a man of mystery and I'm looking forward to finding out his secrets. The chemistry between these two was great and the sex was hot when I wasn't stressing about the lack of a condom. There are a lot of humorous moments and Jenna's best friend Erika really balanced out Jenna's awkwardness, the friendship between them was brilliant though and it was lovely to see how they stood up for each other.
Unexpected Hero was a little slow in the beginning but the pace picked up nicely towards the end and that's what left me wanting to read more. I have high hopes that the next two books are going to be much faster paced and I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out. I'll warn you now that the book kind of ends right in the middle of things so you'll definitely want to have the sequel to hand so you can dive right in after finishing this one.
I didn't know what I was expecting when I started this book. I wasn't expecting what I got. This is a lust-fest romp in the woods with a laughable serious twist in the end.
A group of NYC architects are inexplicably sent away on a nature "vacation" because the building they are working on is opposed by protesters. Jenna and her snobbish jerk office boyfriend is joined by her bubbly best friend, Erica, along with a few others. One of which is a sexual predator. Jenna, the former successful model turned architect (meaning she is hot with drive and brains) is the informal ring leader. She also is a hardheaded alpha female.
They are scheduled to go on this guided nature hike in the mountains of Colorado. The head guide is Karen. The other guide is Chuck/Josh who is ex-special forces military and built like a brick outhouse. He has plenty of bulging muscles (and other bulging parts). He happens to be the stereotypical hot soft spoken hard headed alpha male. Jenna and Josh have a mutual intense attraction of lust for one another. But Josh has a dark past. And Jenna has her share of baggage as well. Will they ever connect in the sack? I'll let you figure that one out.
This story is not ALL bad. In fact, it has real possibilities in parts. Erica is a saving grace in the story. However, the conflicts in the story bleed over into the writing. Some parts are good and others not. The main characters are both likable and not. This wants to be a love story but isn't. Main theme in this book is stolen glances, horny feelings and sexuality. There is a good a bit of humor thanks mostly to Erica. When the story turns serious, it is laughable and not in good way.
I listened to the audio book and the narrator did a fair job although I think she has a hard time with the male voices. The book was just entertaining enough to finish the book. I won't be following up with the next book in the series. Others may enjoy this book but it is not really not my thing.
The beginning and middle part of the book was kind of typical. Rich New Yorkers going to a weekend camp and the lead queen bee who is pretty but has issues is with the sexy and mysterious tour guide. There were funny parts but I wasn't that invested. There were hot moments between Josh (aka Ranger Charlie/Chuck/Captain Sexy) and Sara (Queen Bee/Model/Former Drug Addict/Part-time Bitch) and that kept my interest. The ending picked up significantly and there was mystery and drama. The book ended on a slight cliffhanger. I'll check out the next book.
This is a story that is hard to out down. The twist and turns are great. But it also shows that strength and fierceness are wonderful qualities. If you like a story that intriguing and a little sexy, this is it.
I received this book as a freebie. I was puzzled to begin with and the style was initially unfamiliar but by the time they were in the woods I loved it! Fantastic female characters, intriguing male leads, humour, challenge and the thrill ride that is the cliffhanger at the end of the book. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
My two stars are generous considering this author decided to start the action/suspense part of the plot at three quarters through the book. Prior to that we have our tragically beautiful heroine who is a pretty messed up person who covers that by being a hard b*&%. She keeps saying how scared she is of our hero but he is so sexy that she cannot help but sleep with him. Also, the dialogue between the characters at times sounds like crude drunken conversations that might happen late night at a bar, not with your coworkers at the work retreat from hell. Personally I have no patience for authors that give away the first book for free and then make it incomplete expecting you to buy two more books to finish the story. The plot twist and storyline started way too late for me and the characters are not terribly likeable, so I don’t think I need to find out what happens by buying TWO more books.
Series on Kindle Unlimited All up I was disappointed with this novel. I particularly loved Willow's (KF Breene) Please and Jessica Brodie series and this one didn't really live up to my expectations although I will continue on to book 2.
It really is a bit of a 'bodyguard' novel. The 'vacation' dragged on for much too long and became somewhat tiresome, and I have to say I'm also getting a bit sick of the circling around the issue romance factor.
Anyway, I'm hoping the tale will lift it's game and I'm soldiering on, although I have to say I would have been reluctant to pay for book 2 if it wasn't on KU.
Protesters are angry over a proposed exclusive live/work/play development in a dangerous and neglected area of New York, they accost model turned architect Jenna Anderson and her workaholic team, which includes her wimpy but critical boyfriend, a registered sex offender and her best friend, as they come in to work.
Deciding the team’s presence aggravates the situation, Jenna’s boss decides sending the team on a paid vacation to a nature reserve is an ideal solution. Suspicions and rumors circulate Jenna’s boss was closely associated with organized crime, a faction that faction owns the development area and will do anything to keep their enterprise intact.
Former SEAL Josh Karlan’s become a nature guide in the Colorado Mountains as a way of coping with a bad decision in a battle where people died. Introduced as Chuck to Jenna and her team when they arrive, Josh’s thrown for a loop by a strong attraction to an inattentive Jenna as he tries to keep the group from harming themselves or each other.
Dynamics in the group settle as they sullenly take the hike no one asked for, meanwhile, Josh finds himself unable to keep his distance where Jenna is concerned and rethinks his take the path of least resistance life. Inexplicably, someone shoots at the team sending Josh in SEAL mode.
There are things to enjoy and to dislike in this outing which is the first/foundation of a trilogy or more accurately the first of a three-part story. Which to my taste, enough was related to rate. That said the suspense portion was late in this piece, the premise is nutty, the pacing could’ve been faster and the overall read shorter with fewer frills. Rating: 3stars
This was a story in slow motion. Seriously, where was all the action all the 5 star reviews were going on about? The romance was mediocre. I don't think they all that much chemistry going on. The tough military persona the hero had going on didn't amount to anything but all talk. He managed to pull a knife on a vine, called for everyone to get down and that was it basically. Was this the action that was spoken about? I admit the writing style was good and it had some good dialogue here and there especially between Jenna and Erika but again, that was it. The contents or plot was just a flat. The first few pages eluded to extreme danger and that was exciting. Then they're walking through the forest. At 50% there's still no action. Even at 80%. Just interesting little mayhem during their nature walk. I can count all those in one hand. I'm glad this was free, otherwise I would have been really mad at my money being wasted. But i defiantly will not be buying the next book. I'm picturing it being just as slow with the romance being robotic and boring. At one point, the hero went from silent and deadly to sounding like something out of a historical romance with all the..."are you real or is it my imagination".... The heroine seems bi-polar. The switch between smart and sweet to threatening and abusive is not done smoothly so I'm left thinking she's a 5 year old throwing a tantrum.
THIS IS A 3 PART STORY WITH TWO CLIFFHANGERS. IF YOU DON'T LIKE CLIFFHANGERS, DON'T READ THIS BOOK!
I have read books before where the MCs are unlikable but this story took the cake.
The H breakdown 25% Obnoxious 25% Nice 10% Whiney 40% Overly Aggressive/Possessive/* * at times, physically aggressive / abusive
The h was irredeemable in my eyes. Headstrong to the point of TSTL. She had a tough childhood as her stepmonster kept her stick thin for modeling and got into trouble because of it. She stood up for an aggressive sex offender working for the firm because 'he is brilliant' even though he tried attacking her and others. She willingly worked for a corrupt boss. She treated everyone except her best friend like crap.
I will finish out the series only to see how it ends.
Brief Summary: No need to expand on the author's summary.
In Unexpected Hero Jenna Anderson finds a strong man to match her bad-ass strong leadership and one that is fun, handsome and best of all he can protect her from the killers that are after her to stop the building she is designing in New York City.
Josh worked as a trail guide in Colorado where the design team was sent on 'vacation' to hike into the wilderness. Shots rang out in the clearing by the pond, Dale was killed and Josh became Jenna's Unexpected Hero when he took over and got her to safety. I love the strong silent well-built type that comes to the rescue of the strong woman that doesn't think she needs rescued.
The characters are wonderful, full of humor, with forceful personalities and great interaction. The building of the plot is great, as the mystery is solved on who wants the design team eliminated. The story continues in Unexpected Danger book two of the trilogy.
Two lead characters with way too much in their pasts. A building designer fighting against everything to get the project of her dreams made. A group of New Yorkers dropped into a hiking trip with a guide who's not what he seems.
There's a lot happening in this book, the start of a trilogy. Relationships everywhere, a current of sex just under the surface of the entire narrative. Hints of danger and brewing violence from the prologue on, snakes and larger predators in the wild and predatory humans everywhere.
The story is well crafted and well written but more complex than the average romance novel. There's instant attraction (of course), misunderstandings, exhibitionist sex, and more. The character backgrounds includes - well, almost everything - from modeling to military action and multiple points between.
Troubled. That's what I feel after reading this series, and this review is for my own benefit which is why it's here and not on amazon. I loved WS BD series so much I went out and snapped up as much of her back work as I could find, feeling sure that I would love all her writing as much as I loved that series. Boy was I wrong. This story started out great, I liked Jenna, I truly did and for the most part in this first book I liked Josh, he was an ass but not an irredeemable one. There were a few moments in this first book but for the most part I enjoyed it and looked forward to reading this relationship going further, which is why this first book got 3 stars.
Good thing I couldn't sleep last night lol Unexpected Hero was to hard to put down anyway and then a bloody cliffhanger ending seriously so then i had to continue straight onto book 2 then 3 so no sleep but 3 fantastic reads.
I love Jenna she cracks me up such a tough outer shell with a very fragile center and Erika well now she is the balance to Jennas crazy so when Jenna meets Josh he becomes the balance to her fragile center and then there is Jax Erikas jokester, Josh's best friend they really do make a dynamic foursome 2 ex navy seals 2 brilliant women who attract trouble at every turn really truly matches made in the outer woods or manhattan skyline.
Unexpected Hero by Willow Summers is an entertaining romantic suspense. Ms. Summers has given us a well-written book with an awesome cast of characters. Jenna is an architect from NY forced to go on a hiking trip with her team to protect them from harm. Josh has left the SEALs and is now acting as a guide. Their story is packed with drama, action, suspense, humor and steamy sex. I enjoyed reading Unexpected Hero, but I didn't enjoy the cliff-hanger ending.
Loved this hot and sexy book with a fun spin on hiding from the bad guys theme. This whole trilogy was a binge worthy read, that I couldn't put down. I loved how Josh helped Jenna learn to accept her feelings and emotions and Jenna helped Josh absolve himself of some of the guilt he felt from his past. Their besties, her boss and both their fathers made for an interesting cast of different personalities.
This book made me forgot what genre I was reading, which is an awesome talent in writing. Was it a thriller- or a romance? I loved the story development, knowing there were two more books in the series. If I had read it not expecting additional books, I would have been disappointed, but that wasn’t the case. Interesting, exciting story that I couldn’t put down!
And for me very confusing on the names. Main guy...Josh aka charles, aka charlie, aka ranger bob, aka chuck. Really unnecessary. First half of the book I couldn't keep all the name straight to find out if was the same person. I normally like this offer, but not this time.
Good read. Kept me interested. I love Jenna, she is tough but just a hurting little girl. Perfect match to Josh. Looking forward to the next book. Anxious to see how the storyline continues with Erica and Jax.
This was an unexpected surprise have never read this author before and will definitely put it on my dad's list.
He hero puts all but the best men to shame. It's a joy to read about him. The heroine is too difficult to completely like, but she has some good aspects. Worth reading if you like amazing men.
The heroine while strong and resilient is damaged, spoiled and mean. The hero also damaged, but less verbal and more kind. Interesting plot. Less graphic love scenes and more mystery would have been preferable.
Jenna is a architect, and their team. They have protesters so her boss decides to send them on a vacation Josh is their leader on their vacation. He is ex-military. Josh and Jenna get involved Sex scenes are Hot. Suspense.
This book had it all love adventure, sex and even a crazy killer thrown in what more could a good book have,I loved reading about Jenna and Josh aka Chuck.
Wow although I enjoyed this story I was seriously disappointed that I need to buy books 2 & 3 to finish this story. I have no problems with cliffhangers or continuing stories if I’m told upfront. Great story but I won’t be buying anymore.
Although I don't like cliffhangers, I must admit I am totally hooked by the characters and storyline in this first book. First time reading this author who created very dynamic and entertaining characters to tell her story.
