About the author
Balakumaran
252 books575 followersBalakumaran was born in Pazhamarneri village near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district in 1946. As a child, he was highly inspired by his mother, who was a Tamil scholar and a Siromani in Sanskrit, used verses of Sangam and other ancient literature to motivate him when ever he was emotionally down. This created a deep interest in Tamil literature which made literature his passion. His first stories were published in a literary magazine called ‘Ka-Sa-Da-Tha-Pa-Ra’ and for which he was also a founding member, a self-anointed militant literary journal that had been launched with a mission to blaze new trails in modernist literature.
He has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Saavi and Kumudam. Later he became a famous Tamil writer, author of over 200 novels, 100 short stories, and dialogue/screenplay writer for over 14 films. His writings are noted for a distinct philosophical and religious tone. He is fondly called 'Ezhuthu Sithar' by his fans. He is a disciple of "Sri Yogi Ram Surath Kumar".
In his many novels he shows immense interest in enlightenment. He is considered as "Maanasiga Guru" for many individuals, who are in search of the formless almighty. His lucid but powerful expressions of man-woman relationship and human-God union is a tribute to mankind.
He has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Saavi and Kumudam. Later he became a famous Tamil writer, author of over 200 novels, 100 short stories, and dialogue/screenplay writer for over 14 films. கரையோர முதலைகள்..
எழுத்தாளர் பாலகுமாரனால் எழுதப்பட்டது.
ஏழ்மையில் தத்தளிக்கும் பெண்ணின் வழ்க்கையில்; எப்படி எல்லாம் இன்ப-துன்பங்கள் எந்தெந்தச் சூழலில் வருகின்றது. அதை அந்தப் பெண் எப்படிச் சமாளிக்கிறாள் என்பதைக் கனகச்சிதமாக எடுத்துக் கூறியிருப்பார் எழுத்தாளர்.
இந்தக் கதையில் தாம்ஸன் மெக்காலே என்ற நிறுவனமும் மற்றும் ரோமன் ஸ்பிரிங்ஸ் என்ற நிறுவனமும், இருமுக்கியக் கதாபாத்திரங்களாகவே மாறி கதையோடு வளம்வரும்படி செய்திருப்பார்த் திரு பாலகுமாரன்.
கதையின் முக்கியக் கதாபாத்திரம் என்று பார்த்தால். கதையின் நாயகன் (தியாகு),நாயகி(ஸ்வப்னா) இவர்களின் சினேகிதர் மற்றும் ஸ்வப்னாவுடன் பணியாற்றும்( ராமநாதன்). முற்பகுதியில், கதைக்களம் முழுவதும் இவர்களைச் சிற்றியே சுழலும்.
கதாசிரியர் காலை எட்டரை மணிக்கு வேலைக்குப் போகும் மக்களைப் பற்றிக் கூறியிருப்பார்ப் பாருங்கள். அதுமுற்றிலும் இந்த இயந்திர மயமாகப்பட்ட சென்னை வாழ்க்கையை மையமாக வைத்துப் புனையப்பட்டது.
மக்கள் எப்படி இந்த மானகரப் பேருந்தியில் பயணிப்கிறார்கள். பேருந்தில் என்னென்ன செயல்கள் எல்லாம் நடக்கும் என்பதை எதார்த்தமாக இந்தக் கதையின் வாயிலாகக் கூறியிருப்பார் எழுத்தாளர். அந்தபேருந்து நிகழ்வைப் படிக்கும் போது நமக்கு எழுத்தாளர் நடக்கரத் தைதான் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார் என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்றும். இந்த நிகழ்வுகளை எப்படித் தவிர்ப்பது அல்லது நடக்காமல் தடுப்பது போன்ற எண்ணம் மனதில்எழும்.
நம் நாயகி ஒரு டெலிபோன் ஆப்பரேடராக முன்னே குறிப்பிட்டுள்ள தாம்ஸன் மெக்காலே என்ற நிறுவனத்தில்வேலைச் செய்து வருகிறாள், இவளுக்கு ஒரு பெண் மற்றும் ஒரு ஆண் குழந்தை உள்ளனர்.
கதை முழுவதும் நாயகியின் கோபத்தை முன்னிறுத்திச் சித்தரித்திருப்பர் எழுத்தாளர்.
இந்தக் கோபம் அவளுக்கு எப்படி ஏன் வந்தது? அதுவும் பெண்களுக்கு நிகழும் அநீதிகளைப் பார்த்தால் ஸ்வப்னா எதிர்த்துக் குரல் கொடுப்பது தைரியமாக அந்தத் தருணத்தைக் கையாளுவது போன்றதை அழகாக எழுத்தாளர்க் கூறியிருப்பார்.
இதற்கு என்ன காரணம் என்று பார்த்தால்? (ஸ்வப்னா) சிறு வயதில் பல ஏமாற்றங்களைத் தாண்டி வந்தவள், அவள்வாழ்க்கையில் எப்படிப்பட்ட கஷ்டங்களைக் கடந்துவந்தாள் என்பதைத் தன் கணவனுடன் பகிர்ந்துக் கொள்கிறாள். அதை நம் நாயகன் ஸவப்னாவின் கணவன் தியாகு எப்படிக் கையாளுகிறான் போன்ற பல விஷயங்களை விளக்கியிருப்பார்.
கதையின் பிற்பகுதியில் ஸ்வப்னாவைச் சிறு வயதில் ஏமாற்றிய இரு நபர்களைப் பற்றி அவள் தன் கணவனிடம் கூறும்காட்சி அனைத்தும் அநாயாசமாகக் கையாண்டிருப்பார் எழுத்தாளர்.
பத்மஜா எப்படி ஸ்வப்னாவோட இணைந்துத் தாம்ஸன் மெக்காலேயில் பணிபுரிகிறாள், ஸ்வப்னா ஏன் பத்மஜாவைப் பற்றி ஒரு சரியான புரிதலை வைக்கவில்லை? இந்தப் பெண் இப்படிதான் என்ற எண்ணம் எழக் காரணம் என்ன? ஒருதவறான கருத்தைத் தன்மனதில் வைத்திருந்தாள்.
பிறகு பத்மஜா எப்படி ஸ்வப்னாவின் மனதை மாற்றினாள்.
ஸ்வப்னாத் தனியாகத் தன்னை ஏமாற்றியவர்களைப் பழிவாங்கினாளா? அல்லது அவர்களைத் திருத்திப் புது மனிதராக மாற்றினாளா? என்ன செய்தாள் ஸ்வப்னா என்பது தான் இந்தக் கரையோர முதலைகள்.

உலகத்து உயிர்கள் எல்லாம்
உணவுக்கு பேயாய் பறக்க

ஏங்குவது முதலை மட்டும்
ஒரு இலை விழுந்தால் கூட
முதலையின் முதுகு சிலிர்க்கும்
ஒரு சுள்ளி முறிந்தால் கூட

சில நல்ல வாசிப்புகள் எனது தூக்கத்தை கெடுத்து விடும். தமிழ் புத்தகங்களில் இன்று வரை நான் பாதுகாக்கும் புத்தகமாய் இருந்தது ''சிவசங்கரியின் சுறாமீன்கள்''. இன்று முதல் ''பாலகுமாரனின் கரையோர முதலைகளும் சேர்ந்துவிட்டது. அவசியம் பெண்கள் படிக்கவேண்டிய பாடம்.

The book tries to describe the life of a working woman fighting social/psychological odds in TamilNadu around the same time the book was written - circa 1980. The book starts by describing the irritable behaviour of the protoganist - Swapna, then explain the reason for such behaviour by making her recount her past to her husband - Thyagu "that she was sexually exploited by two men"; she confides with a colleague Ramanathan, who irks her when he breaks her trust and reports a shabby incident she was part of to her husband without her knowledge. Deranged that she is not able to put her past behind, she decides to address them; being the definition of nice/caring/polite husband Thyagu accepts her wish to take revenge on men who cheated her. Side note: If technical definition of losing virginity is used to denote only the act of penetration in coitus and fore-play is unaccounted for then Swapna married Thyagu as a virgin. (Why did I put this here? cause I read somelines twice or thrice; because I felt the emotional baggage of protoganist was not propotionate; then I convinced myself that era must be taken into account)
As the story comes to end, writer realizes he is not having any more hold on Ramanathan character to express netrual views and so introduces intrusive Padmaja to state some bold social messages like "I can sleep with anyone am comfortable with and marry the one who could provide best life, and the lover I might have to leave should be proud and happy that I got good life" which I and protoganist felt to be bitchy; while Padmaja managed to convince Swapna otherwise, Balakumaran miserabily failed to convince me...
Writer explains the state of mind to be new normal, but such behaviour is not acceptable even from western cultural aspect, there too boyfriends won't walk away because girlfriend gets a rich man! From Tamil cultural aspect its absurd, while love and love making before marriage is common among population, leaving the man to marry another is not... there are tale narrating women losing touch with reality and goes into slow death mode if a man cheats on her, to my knowledge moving on is very new to us... remember reading somthing like 'her breast swell in pain and her family misunderstood it, luckily he came back for her and she went with him to live for him' < ofcourse in Tamil, just the lack of time and enthu to type in Tamil made me translate.
What, Why, How parts are well defined and dealt, but final the additional stuffing of social message was less than desirable. Balakumaran was gentle enough to describe the desirable traits of man and woman in relationship and I felt compelled to compare my personal relationship. The book manages to capture that time period and now I can imagine what sort of environment my dad and mom worked in. To have same employer forever till retirement! I don't know how many is even thinking such stuff these globalized days

A laid back, off generation novel to me. It was quite good from the literary point of view but I couldn't digest the story plot. Too way narrow-minded according to me. Don't really remember anything else I've read from Balakumaran so can't compare. Would try reading another book soon.
