I'm still enjoying this series, but I wish the plot wasn't inching along at this point.

description

For the last few books it seems like we get a lot of fighting and combat scenes- but only a day or so of progress in the book's world. That along with some POV's I wasn't really interested in, and I had to push myself to finish this one.

I will def read on because I want to see whats going to happen with Odile, Gerard, and the vision. But i'll be honest I'm mostly interested in Terryn and Ayleth story!

Wow, wow and wow. This series keeps getting better and more better and I don't know how it is possible. Each book becomes my favorite. I just can't wait for the final book so I can know if Ayleth really gets the happy ending or not. But the action and mystery is mesmerizing. I love the characters and even the antagonist too.

Waiting eagerly with so much excitement for the next book!

All I can really say about this book is: How dare you. Over and over again. How dare the synopsis conveniently forget to mention my boy Terryn. How dare this book pain Fendrel so villainously. How dare Terryn and Ayleth not see each other EVEN ONCE. Do not continue this review if you have not read any of the previous books in this series.

Everyone's relationships are strained in this book except for anything to do with Terryn, because Terryn is literal perfection in this entire book. He's over here systematically fixing everything as fast as he possibly can, but he's only one man and there are a lot of characters screwing everything up, and I'm not just talking about the actual bad guys.

Speaking of bad guys, we get the origin story of the title Queen of Poison, which is really cool. And confusing to poor Ayleth who is already dealing with much confusion concerning her relationship with her former mistress (forgive and move on, I say).

Gerard is also dealing with a lot of anger issues because the second generation is just so mad at the first generation right now because apparently no one can understand why anyone did what they did to save the world and deliver them all from evil for as long as possible. But anyway...

Since there is no real Ayleth and Terryn interactions to discuss here (Grr), I will give my statement in Fendrel's defense. He is not a bad guy. He is a man who did a lot of gray things for a good reason and bears the burden heavily. So when it all comes crumpling down and looks like his sacrifices might be for naught, he's understandably testy. Add to that the fact that the person he loves most in the world was killed in front of him, and I think we can all understand why he loses his mind a bit and turns on the others that he loves. In his poor, broken mind, why should he have them when he can't have his closest loved one, too? He's in a free-fall of grief, and unfortunately, a powerful man going through that free-fall.

Note to more sensitive readers: This book had some bad language, violence, horror elements, just plain intensity, and far too little romance.

The story just keeps getting better and better! I’m getting a little worried about our beloved characters now though. I hope they all survive but that’s probably hoping for too much🙏🏼

I was given and ARC in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion of the book. I'm quite in love with this series.

Queen of Poison continues immediately where Tears of Dust left off. I think one of my favorite parts about this book was learning more about the past and the how and why of Dread Odile's reign. Ms. Mercedes storytelling skills grow with each installment. The scope of this book encompasses more characters viewpoints than previous books and I'm excited to see how everything comes together in the end. There are still a lot of strings to tie off for a satisfactory ending but I have no doubt Ms. Mercedes is up to the task.

Ayleth's past has been revealed, but her future is still to be decided, and a huge weight rest on our protagonists shoulders. I don't envy her the task ahead, but like the author, I have no doubt she can do it and I can't wait to see how this stunning series concludes in Crown of Nightmares.

If you haven't picked up book 1 Daughter of Shades yet I highly suggest you do.

I can’t believe I only have one book left. I can’t wait to see how the series ends, but I also don’t want it to end. This series has been a fantastic find. I’m so glad I was able to read them.

The dreaded last book syndrome. I am calling book 6 and 7 the last book because all of these books are not long and these 2 went together. I really liked hearing Odile's story, that explained a lot. This was just a long agonizing journey for everyone. This had more violence then the last and some scary stuff!
The violence would be R. No sexual content

Meh

****Spoilers****

It's been a while since I read the last book in this series but this one was a bit of a let down. For me I think the reason I disliked this book was Fendrel. I didn't like the way he treated Ayleth including encasing her hands in the iron mitts and refusing her the release of her hands from the iron shackles to defend herself. It makes no sense for her to be weak at the end to face Odile but it takes others to point it out and him to somewhat act on those concerns.

I also felt lukewarm because Ayleth spends the entire book as a captive and I missed the fighting spirit and honor since she's limited in what she can do while shackled.

Hollis I fear will never be able to reclaim a relationship with Ayleth and I wonder at the end game for her. She seems to have some affection for Fendrel based on their history together...gag.

Tyrrn's was probably the most interesting tale in this one, especially since he finally allowed his shade to be ascendant. His is a power at which I wonder and hope he'll be able to do amazing things. I'm also hopeful for a future relationship for him and Ayleth but it may not be in the cards given the prophesized events.

I was surprised at how uncaring Odile is when it comes to the Crimson Devils. They revere her but it doesn't seem to be returned and Odile comes across as apathetic. I don't understand why she wouldn't be more engaged with the Crimson Devils. The parts of the book that dipped into her past were somewhat interesting but I would have preferred to have gotten that information in earlier books.

All in all, I'm still curious about how this story will end, now have to wait another month and a half for the next release.

This feels... too fast.

There's so much action in this book and yet nothing really happens. The entire book occurs during the span of what, 12 hours? A day? Ayleth and company are attacked left and right and, while they get a couple wins, there's no sense of achievement. I'm a bit disappointed. There's really no reason why this book needed to be it's own entire volume.

This definetly felt like a setup for the finale, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good setup!

Ayleth is being hauled across the borough to the Witchwood by Frendel as a prisoner. She isn't just shackled with iron, but forced to wear iron mits (horrible torture devices that drive iron spikes into her hands every time she moves) which keep Laranta at bay with iron poisoning, and ensures Ayleth herself is constantly in and out of consciousness due to the pain.
Gerard has been locked in his rooms to prevent him from interfering with Fenrel's plan, however he didn't plan on Kephan hiding Nilly in the prince's room during the battle of the previous night. Nilly shares with him the vision she shared with Alyeth; of Gerard being there at the end, killing Ayleth who bears the etir crown.

They both travel differnt paths toward their converging destinies, and each has their protectors trailing in their paths. Terryn will stop at nothing to protect Gerard, his brother. Hollis will stop at nothing to pretect Alyeth, their only chance to kill Dread Odile once and for all.
But can they account for all that will stand in their way?
Odile is regaining her strength, sending her lietenats and hoards of shade taken to stop the venators in their path and to bring Ayleth to her, alive.
The Crimson Devils want to obey their Queen, but they know the risk Ayleth poses to her and war with themselves over killing her. There is however, no such order to keep Gerard alive, he is fair game.
The Witchwood, Oromor, knows it is threatened by Dread Odile, that she is coming to reclaim her crown. But is Ayleth the answer to it's problems?

I'm looking forward to reading the conclusion of this amazing serires, but also not ready to say goodbye to it's world and characters. The concept of the Shades, marked as the enemy and only used as weapons, has been interesting and a joy to read. But as is obvious from Ayleth and Terryn's interactions with their shades, they are not pure evil. I can very easily see Sylvia bringing Nilly's vision to life, but I can just as easily see her thwarting it. Unlike Ayleth's true identity, this is something I can't see coming.

Terryn nodded and, with a sigh, sat down on the log beside his brother, breathing the temporarily clearer air. “I’ve turned heretic,” he said simply.
“Ah.” Gerard nodded. He was silent for a bit. “Well, I think I may have also. It’s probably for the best.”
“Probably,” Terryn agreed.

I've been eating these books up as fast as I can, and this was another thrilling instalment. Sylvia's worldbuilding continually delights and astonishes with its inventiveness, and the fantasy world she has created in this story draws on themes from real history and religion to create something that feels truly grounded and real. All that, and the stories keep up a recklessly-paced adventure full of acton and twists.

This second-last book is occupied positioning the characters for a final confrontation and contains some dramatic revelations about the nature and history of Dread Odile and the Witchwood. We definitely seem to be heading towards a pretty spectacular final showdown...and I have every confidence in Sylvia's ability to land the story.

Part of me wonders if this book could have been condensed with another. While I did enjoy the action, world-building, and intensity all return for the penultimate book in this series, it didn’t seem to do much other than get every character directed to where they needed to be.

Most of the main characters seem to have completed their arcs, and other ones, including Dread Odil, were added in a way that felt a little padded. I still enjoyed the backstory and certain confrontations, but it didn’t quite move the plot ahead.

The creativity and world-building are still very good and added to the immersion. The prose is also solid and truthfully the pacing is quick, there just doesn’t seem to be much of s story if you dig deeper.

That said, I am still engaged by the world and its intense characters, and I do feel invested enough to see how the Venatrix series wraps up!

Each time I read another novel in the Ventrix Chronicles, it gets better and better! I really enjoy how Ms. Mercedes weaved the story of Dread Odile's rise to power, but kept up with all our favorite characters. Each character has their own part to play in the journey that they take. There are a few revelations and I enjoyed how Terryn's character grew in this novel. The past has come to haunt of few of the characters, which has a great impact on Ayleth, Terryn, and Gerard. Fendrel will do anything to keep his secrets and use Ayleth until he has no more use for her. Fendrel and Hollis, who loved each other, have hurt their own pupils with their secrets. Terryn, Ayleth, and even Gerard, are no longer naive to the teachings of Saint Evander amd what the shades represent. Each has their own journey and destiny to fulfill, for they need to stop Dread Odile from regaining her crown. But what price will they each have to pay? Cannot wait for book 7!
I received this novel from Ms. Mercedes as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was amazing! It was action packed with the added bonus of digging a little deeper into the why with Dread Odile! Still would like to strangle Fendrel and would also love for Ayleth to take him out. I always suffer a big hangover after reading Sylvia’s books after being enthralled in the world that she created. She has a way of hooking you in the story and not letting you go until it’s done and making you sorry that it’s over. This is a definite read!!

Well, I was honored to get to read this prior to release! It's like watching a movie before everyone else but better!!
Once all the books are released, I'll binge read them. This cliff-hanger business is driving me a bit batty.
While not as action-packed as the others, it was still just as heart-pounding. The story flies along at almost a break-neck speed. That is not a negative trait at all. I'm not sure if this one is shorter than the others (no page numbers on the early-release), but I sped through it.
I loved the progression of the story. It just makes me want more and more!
Terryan & Gerard have somewhat rekindled their brother-bond. Hollis is here to try to undo some of the damage she's done. Ayleth sees herself as Fendrel's asset because he's named her as such. More and more of the truth becomes known in this one and it is thrilling! I missed Laranta in this one. However, I truly enjoyed meeting Nisirdi!!
This one has some brutal battles with the witches. Just because there isn't as much, there is still plenty of adventure. This book lays down a lot more story and you can see the unveiling of Odile and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
This one releases May 20! It will totally be worth the wait!! Now to hunker down and wait for the 7th book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from ARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I really didn't like this book. It definitely didn't need to be a whole 400 pages. The time line is really wonky. I didn't care for the added POVs. Though, it was nice to see where Olide came from and how she became what she was. Fendrel is literally the biggest idiot ever. I really hate him. Like really hate him. Hollis I almost feel bad for her. I get why Ayleth hates her but at the same time she's trying, I think. I hated how Ayleth was a prisoner pretty much the entire time! It was so irritating to see. I'm so used to Ayleth being this ferocious and bad ass fighter. And seeing her brought so low was just irritating. She didn't even try to fight and no one helped her until last minute. Ugh! It really could have all been condensed into less than 100 pages. There was way too much going on and didn't need to be as all over the place as it was. I'm still going to finish the series so I know how it ends.

This book was so tense. Everything went wrong on all levels.

We learn more about Dread Odile and her reign and dive deeper into her past, which was great (and overdue). At this point, we have most of our answers about Aylen. The whole story surrounding her at this point is heartbreaking and frustrating, and I just kept hoping for better for her throughout the book.

Terryn really rises in this one, and seeing him ascend was so wonderful. He really went from being a side character to Aylen (and basically just a romantic interest) to standing on his own and being his own main character, and I loved it. I'm really interested in seeing how his power develops in the final book.

I'm really quite sad to be approaching the end, but I am getting those “ending” vibes, and as much as I love this series, it feels like the right time.

I made myself wait to read this one, because the second to last book always ends on such a cliff-hanger no matter the series and I wanted to read the sixth book and then the seventh in rapid succession. And then I caved... because what better book to feast on than the next Ventrix Chronicles book when I'm feeling down during the Corona shut down?!

I definitely liked this book more than the last one, if anything it started to feel more 'complete' if that makes sense. I really enjoyed the inserts of Odile. Not only did it help me understand the world events better, but they were also really interesting. It leaves me wondering why she destroys so much, she seems to care for those she protects... but when did she stop feeling guilty, or does she still feel guilty now?

Also I need the Terryn/Ayleth reunion scene and I want to witness a good long conversation between Hollis and Fendrel!! I really loved their relationship in the prequel novella and I hope to see those to characters interact alone for a little while. I'm kind of sad we didn't get to see the Celine/Gerald relationship continue, but maybe we'll get a few notes on that in the next book :)

All in all, I'm jumping up and down inside (and outside) waiting for the seventh book.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book. Here's my honest review following reading -

OMG! Sylvia continues to completely wow the reader with this epic storyline!
Book 6 continues where book 5 (Tears of Dusy) left off, with Ayleth and her compatriots on the trail of the dread queen Odile and her Crimson Devils.

Sylvia continues with her amazing world building, which aids the reader in falling completely into the story. It makes you feel as if you could really be there with the characters, seeing exactly what they're seeing.
The characters themselves have grown throughout the series so far and continue to develop, while also introducing a couple of earlier characters who make more of a mark in the story.

In this book, we can read more of Odile, who she is and where she came from, which helps expand on the story as a whole.

The cliffhanger though! I think I almost had a heart attack (again!!) when I reached the last page! Sylvia, woman, you are a real, honest to whoever you believe in, author who knows how to hook your readers and keep them coming back for more! Is it time for book 7 yet???

Sylvia Mercedes does the business once again. Another masterclass in how to keep your readers entertained and their eyes glued to the page. If there was any way of awarding more than five stars, I would've done it gladly.

The author unveils more of the backstory concerning Dread Odile and some of the other characters involved, and juxtapositions it with what is happening in the present timeline. You may feel the loss of one shade (I know I did), however, another will emerge when you least expect it.

This is an amazing storyline which I will in no way spoil by giving hints, so apologies for being deliberately vague. I was in tears on more than one occasion. But that's just me, I'm a big softy.

The world, story, and character building are phenomenal pieces of work. Being honest, I can't wait for the final book to come out, and I don't want to read it because it ends the series, in equal measures. Don't hesitate to buy anything by this author as she is so talented.

I chose an eARC of this work, which I then voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.

The penultimate book of the series, Queen of Poison followed the characters as they set themselves up for the final showdown yet to come. It was arguably the best written of the series, with Dread Odile's story beautifully and seamlessly intertwined throughout. I always love Sylvia's worldbuilding, and I couldn't fault it in this book either.

Though I found there was noticeably less action, I definitely felt the book did a good job in building up anticipation for the final showdown of the finale. I did really miss Laranta, and of course I was gutted we didn't get to see my two favourite characters together, but I thought Nisidri was a great addition.

All in all, it was a brilliant book. Despite being the best written, it wasn't quite a 5 star book for me as I was just missing seeing Ayleth be the badass she is, but it was definitely essential to the plot and I'm super excited for the 7th and final book's release in July.

Book 6 in the Venatrix Chronicles

This series continues to draw me in and entertain me with the ongoing storyline. It's filled with well-developed characters who show growth throughout the series in an intricately described world.

Trust your shade...Heretic shade-taken..."Last hope to save souls and bodies"...Traitor to the order...Attempts to fix mistake...Accomplish goddess's will together...Search for atonement...Wicked queen returned...Failed mastery of the crown...

One of the order's own, an orphaned girl who was special because her ancestors had great power and influence to change the face of the world, turned against them. Great power will offer safety and refuge. A shade will protect the host spirit. Live. Lose. Suffer. Remain safe as long as serving a purpose.

"Trust me."
"But everything lost may be redeemed."
"We have a purpose to fulfill in this world."
"What if the end is just the beginning.?"

Excited to see how the series concludes in book 7

Well dang.

I don’t know how to feel about this chapter of Ayleth’s story.

I’m angry at Gerard for, well, you’ll find out! I’m disappointed in the Crimson Devils , and in Oldie slightly. Thought for her I do feel heartbreak and would so so down for reading about her life pre-beheading. Annoyingly I understand Fendrel more, and his actions, they they still infuriate me. Terryn I love your loyalty but it’s also blinding you! Ayleth, oh you have some choices to make and I will Stan day your side in whatever you choose, I’m down with it.

I have all the feels right now. This was a dark, ominous and thrilling tale. Woven expertly to keep me hooked and plunging further into the kingdom of Perrinion. Thought this whole book I could feel the weight of the witchwood surrounding me, could feel the Devils and Evanderians hounding my every step. I cannot wait to get into the next part.

This book was amazing! All the tiredness that I felt in the last book was gone in this one.
I suffered with Ayleth and wanted her to kill Fendrel.
I want to read how was the story between Hollis and Fendrel, how he became so crazy
This is a awesome book that shows that we must not see the world by just one way of vision, this is shown by the show of the story of the odile, what a story! She loves her family so much, she is not the heartless monster everyone said.
The scene of Ayleth imagining a future with Terryn was perfect for who is shipping the couple.
Excited to see the renconter of Ayleth and Odile, it will be amazing!
What did you think about the book?
What villain you love even though you feel it is wrong?
I loved seeing the odile's story, of course I don't endorse her killings but I loved to see her straight and story.

I was lucky enough to be a AFC reader for this book. I have loved this series from the beginning and always look forward to the books as they come out. This book is more of a set up book for the final book. It fills in all the background info of all the witches and most importantly Dread Oldie. I love how complex this story is in the sense that there is no right or wrong. You can sympathize with both sides and understand why certain characters did what they did. (I'm trying not to give away anything.) I wished that we got to see Ayleth spent more time with a certain character, but I get that they had to go on different paths. I liked reading about Fendral and Holis more. I can't wait until the last book. I'm hoping that everyone gets a happy ending.

Fantastic Continuation!

WOW! Each installment of this phenomenal series has blown me away. This amazing author's ability to transport us readers into a stunning fantasy world is truly the sign of a phenomenal writer.

Queen of Poison is a fast paced, action packed story with so many twists and turn throughout making your head spin. This series continues to keep me on the edge of my seat with utter anticipation of what the hell is going to happen next. I am being pulled into an intense soon to be epic final battle. I don't want this series to end but at the same time I can't wait for the final book.

This story definitely set the stage for one final, dramatic, bloody and totally epic final battle that I can't wait to read about. I am on pins and needles waiting for the end!
