In a realm of warring kingdoms, a young princess must decide whether to follow her family into centuries of enslavement, greed and bloodshed or to risk everything for freedom.
A new merman slave catches her eye, forcing Demelda to make the boldest decision of her life. She had always felt like an outsider, but his unmistakeable presence leads her to question everything she knows about court, the rulers of the realm and ultimately herself. Will she walk with him along the long road to liberation, or will she stay walled up in the king's castle?
Facing mortal peril along the way, Demelda must overcome enemies more frightening than she'd ever imagined – some even closer to home. Discovering the sea dragons is just the beginning.
I recieved a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fabulous start to N.K. Fuller's writing debut! It took me a few chapters to really get into the flow of the story but once I was there I was hooked! The story is told from both Demelda's and Kavic's perspectives, and meets up beautifully in the middle. The idea of mermen and women being forced to live on land as slaves is a new one to me, but it's written so well and I thoroughly enjoyed this new idea. The world building is fantastic, descriptive without being over the top as are the well fleshed characters. A story of the plight of a seemingly lesser people, the hopelessness felt by those less fortunate than royalty as well as the hopelessness and despair felt by Demelda. I believe that this series could well be on its way to being classed as epic.
I enjoy sci fi so I was intrigued by the description of this book. The description lived up to my expectations. Once I got into the story and I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed how the story was told from both Demelda's and Kavic's perspectives as each come into their own. Secrets are revealed, betrayals abound, danger around every corner as four kingdoms fight for supremacy with little regard for human life, and definitely not for the lives of mermen. We learn the history behind the current tensions and why Demelda never felt like she fit in. The story ends with a cliffhanger, as was expected knowing there is a part two to the Chronicles... definitely looking forward to finding out how things turn out for Demelda and Kavic. Will good prevail over evil?
I enjoyed this classic style sword and sorcery story even though it did leave me hanging with a huge cliffhanger just when I thought things were going to step down a bit so the heroes - and their reader - to catch a breath. A rebellious princess from one of four corrupt kingdoms and a merman slave who seems destined to be much, much more head the cast in a plot that features not only human-type armies but a variety of paranormal forces acting to further the story line. Well written with compelling characters ... and some, not so compelling, it's an absorbing and enjoyable read.
I thought the princess was about 15 years old, until she was able to disguise herself successfully, which was then I realized she might be a little older. :) The writing style is different than what I'm used to, the king and queen seem bipolar, and I wish there was more character development instead of sudden revelations, but I'm intrigued enough to continue the series.
It took me a bit to truly get into this book, but I’m really glad I hung in there because this turned out to be a great story. The ending leaves you hanging, anxiously waiting for the next in the series.
3/3.5 stars. I really wanted to love this but while I enjoyed the overall story it was really hard to get into. I had a hard time reading the story and connecting with the characters. I did enjoy the concept with the mermen and the world itself.
Excellent debut book! It's got it all! Action, adventure, intrigue, romance and the world building and characters are spot on. I seriously cannot wait to read the next book!! Please hurry!
