THE STORY
On Malinter, the Divine Fratery, servants of the Runious Powers, do battle with Inquisitor Gideon Ravenor and his companions. But someone else is waiting in the shadows, someone that the Fratery want to see dead even more than they do Ravenor. As daemonhosts battle in the skies and the air fills with gunfire and rain, Ravenor meets with an old friend, summoned by a simple message: Thorn Wishes Talon.

Good setup between the first and second books. It's also nice to see Eisenhorn again, but come on... I know he's built differently, but cutting a dreadnought in half?! 🙄

Ravenor and his warband respond to a cryptic message which draws them into conflict with a shadowy cabal of twisted seers. As a storm builds and enemies close in, Ravenor meets with the message’s author to learn of a terrible danger that clearly someone doesn’t want him to know about.

It feels a little different to most of Abnett’s Inquisition stories, but that notwithstanding it’s everything you might expect from Abnett, with a nicely balanced pace and peppered with the usual characterful dialogue. Narratively it nestles comfortably in between Ravenor and Ravenor Returned to add a little context to what comes next in the wider story.

Cool little short story let down by shoddy writing. This felt very rushed - I'd guess not much more than an afternoon's work for Abnett, and it could have done with a bit more polish.

A good short story this one, definitely on the shorter side but gets everything across well. Is good to see Eisenhorn again here, and see where he is at, seemingly even more Radical really, and interesting to see the reaction of the characters who knew him prior to seeing him again here. Also sets up some intrigue for the remainder of the Ravenor trilogy, to allow for some more tension.

Just a filler story between Ravenor & Ravenor Returns, but still cool. I read it originally without reading Playing Patience or Ravenor and it didn't make a lot of sense, but the action was still really cool. It now makes a lot more sense and is far more relevant.

Return of the GOAT!

Listened to on audiobook.

This is a fun little story that basically fills in a gap from the beginning of 'Ravenor Returned'. Ravenor and his posse are in the process of trying to meet a contact and an all out battle ensues. I had fun with this and it has to be said that the production values of the 40K audio stuff is exceptional. Here we get treated to different actors for all of the characters and it was nice to hear an artists interpretation of them. Harlon Nayl might have been a tad overcooked 😅

The ending plants some seeds for what I hope will become important later on, but the real meat of this is in the big reveal of who they are meeting. Those paying attention to the title might be able to figure out who.

A nice interlude before commencing 'Ravenor Returned'.

It was probably a mistake to hear this without having read the preceding Eisenhorn and Ravenor books, although it did seem designed with folks who didn't have background on the characters in mind. Still, it wasn't the most satisfying.

Oddly, as I am probably one of the biggest Dan Abnett fans in the whole god damn world!, I didn't massively enjoy this. I guess I just expected more. It was good enough just not as good as the other Eisenhorn books.
