Summary: 16 mental models on problem solving, decision making, clear thinking, and respecting reality.
Review: Similarly to his first book, this was an easy read with examples and explanations for each of the models. Each section is dedicated to a mental model. I thought that the sections had a lot of fluff content and some of the mental models were not given their conventional names.
I had my reservations before purchasing and reading this book since I read quite a few books on mental models. Since I had a robust background on the subject did not think there was anything left to gain but I was sorely mistaken. The author presented the ideas and main points of the book in a logical, fluid, and cogent manner. This is one of those books that I will definitely read again in order to gain a greater understanding of mental models, being able to discern which ones to use, and applying them to all aspects of my life.
I liked the first few mental models the best. The bow and arrow is a good model to focus on what you can influence and not to bother too much about the things you cannot. The away instead of towards model is a helpful idea for incremental improvements. In the first few chapters I highlighted a ton of good ideas and I was astonished from the numerous insights I gained. Unfortunately, the book cannot sustain that high level for long and the more it goes on, the less interesting it gets.
I may understand an incentive to publish a book, but I can't understand lack of effort put in book's creation. The substance of this book could easily fit in one (rather short) Twitter thread, and you wouldn't miss anything. This way (via book) it is jus waste of time.
I'm highly pleased by the amount of good and useful information the author was able to fit in this little book. It will be a book that I share with a lot of friends in the near future.
These discussions around thinking about thinking will definitely contribute to your own quality of thinking. I highly recommend this useful and well presented work.
