Maddock and Bones Back Again. This one has a bit more mysticism than most books in this universe, including one particular chapter that seems completely out of the blue for a bit until it is brought back into the real, but overall is a pretty standard action/ adventure tale in this series. If you're looking for bullets and explosions while exploring arcane legends... this is your kind of tale. Very much recommended.

Very well written. Excellent character development along with the plot.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse .....you are so wrong.

They are going to need a little rest before they will be up for anymore adventures.

This was.......

one of the more interesting stories in this series. However, this could have definitely benefitted from a good editor. So many misspellings, missing words, random letters dropped into the middle of sentences. Quite distracting.

What happened

For years I have enjoyed David Woods writing and his Dane Maddock adventures. Until now. Apparently Woods has run out of ideas and Shasta was so poorly written and it's obvious the author is desperately trying to find something to write about. Very disappointed.

The second entry in a projected trilogy in the shared author portion of adventure writer David Wood's Dane Maddock Universe, SHASTA follows Wood and historical fantasy author C.B. Matson's previous story MAUG. While you can read SHASTA on it's own, it is a direct followup to MAUG and best read, imo, after. Besides, MAUG is a rousing sea adventure in the tradition of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt series and in my opinion not to be missed!

In MAUG, former Navy Seals Dane Maddock and Uriah "Bones" Bonebrake and their team of treasure hunters team up with programming genius Sally Smith and charter boat owner Lyn Askew to investigate the Pacific islands of Maug, said to be cursed, after Sally's computer expertise tags it as a likely treasure trove of lost ships. Cursed turns out to be an understatement, as a mysterious force turns the island's resident sealife - as well as previous WWII era observers unlucky enough to have been stationed there - into...something else. When billionaire August Pym and his son, who have been pursuing Sally for her programming genius, enter the scene, ancient Ma'oghe becomes more ally than threat, and Sally is left with a lasting reminder of its power while Pym's son Junior is left behind in the power's not so tender embrace.

With Pym Sr. still in pursuit long after their return to civilization, SHASTA opens with Sally's boyfriend Willis Sanders, a valued member of the Maddock team, gone missing after following Sally to California. Bones and Maddock set out to find both of them, and soon realize not only has Pym Sr. renewed his own search for Sally, but his son Junior, now infused with the ancient power of Ma'oghe himself, is looking for her as well. Both men believe it the key to eternal life and want control of Sally, whose blood may now be the key to the everlasting.

Matson's greatest strength in these tales lies in the side characters flavoring Maddock and Bones's dogged pursuit of the Lemurian mysteries that pepper the world with ancient, still living powers beyond anything known to man. A spunky helicopter pilot, a mysterious benefactor carrying the unlikely but appropriate nickname Uzi along with a brace of stealthy mercenaries, the Pyms themselves and their own mercenary crews including the evil Dr. Goertzner all find themselves on a roller coaster ride that slyly digs at James Bond as nearly every member of the cast is captured, often more than once, by both Pyms on the way to a climax that could mean not just the next eruption of majestic Shasta, but the entire region that sits atop the lava flows that formed the mountain ages ago.

The intersecting storylines that weave in and out of the novel continuously keep everyone guessing, including the reader, while the reveal at the end comes as a delightful surprise tempered by a bittersweet finale. The final volume of the trilogy, BA'AL, should appear by next year. Sooner would be nicer, of course!

In this book we join Maddock and his team as they are trying to rescue Willis from a supervillain's lair atop a volcanic mountain. It is just as crazy as it sounds. It is a little bit weird that I like these books as much as I do, but I think they are a kind of guilty pleasure. Also, they are potato chips books, as in you always want one more. The characters of Maddock and Bones are very, very stereotypical ex navy seals, and somewhat one dimensional. Each book is based on a historical myth, and they are sometimes a little bit repetitive. But the action and adventure is great and very fast paced, and the books are enjoyable.
