Claire DeNardo finally has her own detective agency, DeNardo and Son. The son, being her beloved pug, Charlie. Their first client is the wife of a wealthy Cleveland power broker who hires Claire to find her missing daughter. But Claire soon discovers her client’s family is hiding more secrets than there are sprinkles on Aunt Lena’s doughnuts—secrets that result in several murders. This dangerously spicy case leads Claire to uncover a widespread criminal enterprise in which the names are changed to protect the guilty. Her easy-to-look-at fiancé, Police Detective Brian Corrigan, and his annoyingly stunning new partner, Abby, warn Claire to drop the investigation. But Claire is driven to uncover the truth and prove her client’s innocence, even if it puts herself and her trusty sidekick, Charlie, in danger.
Carole is the author of the new cozy mystery series, The Terrified Detective. She has also written a number of stories for Chicken Soup for the Soul and other similar anthologies. She's published several book of short stories. She currently lives in Dallas, Tx.
Claire is a tough woman that isn't afraid to get in there and solve the crime. It's a good thing she is a PI because that grants her a little more latitude with potential suspects. They don't think twice about answering her questions about the victims or potential murderers. It doesn't matter that her fiance is a police detective, he doesn't like her poking her nose into his cases despite the fact that she is able to unearth details or clues that will help them solve the crime.
This is the first book that I have read in this series and I will say, start with book 1. While the crime/mystery stands alone, there are details about her relationship with Brian and even the mob that isn't fully explained in this book. Setting that aside, I still enjoyed getting to know Claire, Brian, Ed, Lena, and the rest of the gang. The mystery was well written and while the killer was someone I suspected, I didn't read anything that really gave it away that it was this character. There are several different situations happening throughout the book and I liked seeing how it all tied together in the end, or mostly anyway.
There is a character that is somewhat of a threat to Claire and Brian's relationship, but not too much if these two lovebirds recognize her games and act accordingly.
Overall we thought this was an interesting book but would suggest starting with the first book to understand the relationship between all of the characters.
All I can say is wow because books getting more better for get lost into it and can't put book down. I would give books and author more than five stars for rate! 😊 she is one of my favorite authors 😊
Really enjoyed this book and all of its characters. Claire has quite the challenge when starting her PI business , murders every time you blinked. Fun trying to figure out who the murderer was and if Brian and Claire could finally get their love life straightened out.
Enjoyed the book very much. Good story, good characters and well told. I have only one detrimental thing to say and that is that my poor little Italian grandma much be twirling like a whirling dervish in her grave - figs and peaches on pizza. Blasphemy I tell you - Blasphemy. In any case, I look forward to reading more books in this series and recommend it (if not the recipes) to one an all.
This is a fun series and full of laughs. I would start at book 1 if new to the series. In this book Claire DiNardo, who is a PI, opens her own business and is working three cases at once, two easy and one for a high-profile client. Being an animal lover, I am glad to see that Charlie, her pug has a bigger role in this book. The usual cast of family characters, and I do mean characters, Claire's dad, Aunt Lena, Ed and her Fiancé Brian. There is Claire's usual sarcastic humor and the dynamics of the stereotypical Italian family.
Though I was able to figure out who the killer was after a few guesses, I could not figure out the motive until it was revealed. Cannot wait for book 7 to be published.
Happily, received an advanced copy of the book from the author; however, all comments are my own.
Now that the PI agency is officially her own, Claire takes all clients to pay the bills. She handled missing Spam cans full of cash, a salami sandwich thief, and of course a murder, er make that 3 murders. All the while she juggles her love life, her jealousy over Brian's partner, and her family. The result is a fast paced race to keep her clients out of jail and find the real culprit.
I enjoy this series and reading how Claire never avoids difficult situations to help her clients. She makes some very good decisions, all as an independent investigator who knows when to ask for help. Well written and chock full of great characters, it is a series that would appeal to many. And it has some delicious recipes at the end.
Claire is a girl after my own heart. She’s tough, brave yet doesn’t think she is, gutsy and loyal. The author does a great job of getting you to move these characters and the world they live in. Claire is a very realistic PI, nothing nothing comes easy to her and she is good at her job. Her and Brian have a great personal relationship but butt heads professionally. It’s a fantastic dynamic that makes this series so much fun to read!
