Dog River Wolfpack #2

Midnight Rider

Rate this book

The fairies are coming. The fairies are coming.

While still searching for his friend, Dominick Meyer is faced with an onslaught of packs losing their sovereignty to his mother, Araxia. He rallies the packs to stand against her. But even with these victories, she will not be subdued. Her wrath comes with swift and deadly vengeance.

Now it’s a race against the clock to warn the southern packs that she and her army of Faeborn wolves are coming to burn them to the ground. They stop recruiting more to their cause, and opt for destruction.

Plagued with the guilt that this is his fault, Dominick, along with members of the Dog River Pack, reach out to those who stand in her way. But will it be enough? Does he have the strength to protect them all? How long can he control the rougarou that she created?

Midnight Rider is book two, in the Dog River Wolfpack series. This series works in tandem with the Stories of Frost and Fire and are meant to be read that way. However, the series stands alone. Dog River Wolfpack is a part of Kimbra Swain’s #Trailerverse.

So much is coming to light in this book! Nick really shows what he is made of in this one. Actually, several characters have a lot of growth. I'm still not a Lyra fan so it will be interesting to see where things go there. I liked the addition of newbies to the scene and the pack. Things have definitely kicked up a notch. There are a couple things answered in this one that fans have wondered about. There are more questions as well. I think this book draws a lot of plot lines from the different series together while still having each stand on its own. It's an impressive feat by the author. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I love Nick, and this book made me love him even more. It was fast paced with lots of action. I didn't like the ending, because it seemed a bit blunt (sort of like the big battle is over so I need to wrap things up quickly), but it didn't upset me or distract from the overall story being told. More and more is coming to light, but there are still lots of questions left to be answered. However, I know that in the end, Kimbra will resolve everything, so I look forward to the next book in this series and recommend the series to anyone who likes this type of book (shifter urban fantasy without the heavy romance in so many other shifter books).

Batten down the hatches, gird your loins, pour yourself a drink, or do whatever you need to prepare for Nick's next adventure. Midnight Rider is dynamic! An epic roller coaster that will eschew traditional conventions like bedtime or reading moderation. Nick's character growth has been mesmerizing. Anything else I can say would be spoilerish. It's a work of art.

I like where this is going.  Nick is such a good guy that I fear he will go back to his previous relationship, and what I like, is that this is not one of those characters that's capable of forgiving the unforgivable and turning a blind eye to things that happened, he keeps pushing forward, and he needs to, because his responsibilities are growing and the stakes keep growing.

I like how he is stepping up to his new role, and how despite everything, he keeps fighting, even when things get difficult and it looks like it would be easier to give up.  We get more glimpses into his real origin, and about Araxia and her plans.

I feel like I repeat myself constantly in my Kimbra Swain Reviews. Because it bears repeating.

This is the best book she has written so far!!! How does she do it? Book after book, better and better. It shouldn't be! Dominick gets his own series, and boy does she knock it out of the universe!! My favorite Kimbra Swain character has and will always be, Dylan Riggs. BUT!! Dommy is quickly catching up and boy is he giving Dylan a run for his money. The story is mind blowing. A small insignificant detail from a couple books ago, became this epic "What in the Cletus and Tater" is going on here moment! I should no longer be shocked at her ability to make anything and everything a connection but yet, here I sit, my brain scrambled, wondering if there will ever be a day I am not shaken. All my favorites together again and its a wild ride!

The story is in part, about the growth of the children of Shady Grove and Tales of a Trailer Park Fairy Queen. The main character, Dominic “Nick” Meyer has moved out of Shady Grove to become the Alpha, and co-leader of a pack of shifter wolves in the backwater area of Southern Alabama. Nick is a complex guy, who’s life could have left him evil, but has the strength of character to be the kind of leader not only the Dog River pack needs, but all the Gulf area packs of shifters and Faeries alike. Both entertaining and thoughtful, this second book in the series shines as an example of people’s lives knitting together as community.

I loved this book. Now, I'm usually leery about spin-offs. I blame television and the greedy cash grab. However, with the Dog River series as well as Frost and Fire, Kimbra Swain has outdone herself. These two tandem-run series rival her original books. Two books in, and I'm as invested in Nick's story as I was characters from her other books after several stories in. With each book, the stories, the characters themselves, draw me in deeper, faster. It's like Kimbra sits around a campfire at midnight and swaps stories with them. They are so life-like, so very three dimensional. Very few authors can write werewolves and their bond in such a way. Five stars, no doubt.

One of, if not the best book, written by Kimbra! Midnight Rider is action packed from start to finish. I absolutely could not put it down. Dominick is a character that works his way into your heart and soul. Lots of amazing new characters and some surprise character appearances from Fairy Tales of a Trailer Park Queen series. Kimbra writes shifters and fae superbly. Action, fantasy comedy and just plain good! You can immerse yourself into the world Kimbra created so completely that the characters seem real. I am excited for the next book.

I feel like a cheerleader. I am internally screaming Nick! Nick! Nick! He really shows what he is made of in this book. So much on his paws with Araxia trying to take over the southern packs and trying to find Callum. But, on top of all that, he has to deal with the beast inside of him, Lyra's feelings and always taking on everyone else's wellbeing. I just love the whole feeling of family this book exudes!

Wow!

It’s hard to review when the twists and turns are totally unexpected!

I love the book... love the sense of family and friends who have your back, no matter what ...

Hate the physical & emotional abuse of callum ...
shocked that tiny and callum are moon beasts too...
waiting and hoping for the forgiveness and rekindling between nick and Lyra...

My least favorite part is that it ended with callum in winter ❄️ court, and Lyra in a coma ...

Hoping Sully can take back his town.

The Pack(s)

The continuing story of the Dog River pack is again crammed full of emotions, battlefields and a great big helping of some folks from the realm of Winter and best of all, several of our favorites from Shady Grove. The war with the fae born wolves continues and the pack continues to build alliances with other wolves and shifter packs. Read and enjoy this book. You won't be sorry.

I love Nick and this whole series

Another awesome book in the whole series. I love the tension in Nick and how his story is about more then love. Thats its not just another oh they met and fell perfectly in love during a crazy war. Real love is like real life, its messy an complicated and not always so clear. Nicks story is about figuring himself out while trying to fight an impossible battle.

Nick has big problems on his hands. And he is the biggest.

Nick`s mother is taking over all the pure bloid packs. And no one knows why. As Nick tries to work that out, he is also trying to protect everyone in Dog River. His anger builds inside and so does a monster wanting to get out. Dig deep into this book and find out answers to many questions that gave been brewing. In Dog River, Steelshore, and the Other world. Only, those answers bring more questions.

Outstanding

This might be my new favorite book by Kimbra. I don't know where to start. The whole story hits you right in the feels. Nick is going through so much physically and mentally, but he is right there for anyone who needs him. This book really takes you on a rollercoaster I loved every minute of it!

Great book, awesome series. I love Nick, can't stand Lyra. New love interest please! I want a Sully and Callum novella, and Destiny and Ayden. Book flows good but battles seem a tad rushed. I like the Willow interactions, her snark reminds me of Grace. Keep it coming!

Loving this one. Definitely a set up for what is sure to be an epic battle to come, but in no way slacking on it’s own development. Some good laughs, a few tears, and a few good surprises. Don’t miss it.

Rider or Runner

This book is good. This is a deeper in The feelings book than the others. The writing is strong, the feelings strong. I enjoyed it.
