Magic Blessed Academy #1

Gift of the Gods

Rate this book
They call this place Magic Blessed Academy, but I sure as hell don’t feel blessed.

I never asked for these powers. I never asked to be yanked away from my perfectly good life and forced to come here.

But the gods have gifted me with magic, and now I have no choice.

If I was smart, I’d keep my head down and play it safe until I can graduate.

And I definitely wouldn’t go up against the three gorgeous, infuriating men who rule the school—Trace, Merrick, and Lachlan.

But when we’re all chosen to compete in the Gods’ Challenge, a deadly competition for the honor of meeting the gods themselves, teaming up with my bullies may be my only chance at survival.

Now the only question is: will we kill each other or screw each other first?

This is the first book in the Magic Blessed Academy series, a university-age reverse harem paranormal romance. It contains cursing and sexual situations, and is intended for readers 18+.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review - thank you!

As always, I hate to be the bearer of bad book news (not least because it means disappointment for me too) but this is another one which just didn't live up to its potential.

I genuinely remember absolutely NOTHING about this book, not the heroine's name or what the book was even about. It was more or less well-written from a technical standpoint, Eva Ashwood's book are always well-edited, but I found the plot cliched and not at all engaging. It was basically just the thousandth iteration I've read of 'girl discovers she has magic, ends up at school for magic people, pisses off hot guys who own the school.' And it was by no means the best iteration of this plot I've read.

The romance was very weak, largely because - as in Who Breaks First the author inexplicably skips over the details of the heroine's first few interactions with the heroes, instead preferring to proceed straight to 'they're mean to her.' Um, WHAT??? You can't do that! We need to see all the buildup and detail, or we aren't invested in the romance at all.

Story: This was a really interesting story. I enjoyed it a lot. Initially, I didn't like any of the characters. It starts off as a bully situation. Aria was a complete bitch for the most part and the guys were all assholes who acted more like 15 yr olds that 20 something yr olds. But, as the story progressed, they grew on me.

Narration: Stacey Glemboski was new to me but I definitely want to hear more of her narrations. She did really well with all the character's voices and with emotional tone.

Aria is as bad as they come. Badass that is. Not only can tbr girl hold her own, but she has the confidence of a supermodel. I liked that she didn’t take crap from anyone.

The night that it’s discovered that she had magical powers, is the night that everything changes. She has to go to Magic Blessed Academy—where she meets three hot as hell men who rule the entire school.

Once they’re all chosen to compete in a deadly challenge, the foursome will have to learn to work together instead of apart. What they didn’t account for was the insane chemistry they all held. And whether or not they should act on it.

Um, hell yeah they should act out on it! Gift of the Gods is so sexy and Aria will have you rooting from the very first page. I definitely want to see how much more she can get these yummy men wrapped around her little finger.

I’M SICK OF BULLYING FROM THE HAREM!

I picked this book up under false pretenses. In my RH reader’s FB group someone mentioned this book was awesome and a nice break from all the bullying books. So I downloaded it asap…that person was lying.

To be fair, I DNF’d it at 45%. Maybe the bullying stops? I don’t care though. I picked this book up because I thought it had no bullying.

I can never get on board with sex between people when one of them intentionally hurts another. I’ll never root for that relationship. Maybe it’s because I was in an abusive relationship before. Bullying isn’t hot. Ever. Hate sex isn’t hot. Abuse isn’t sexy, even if it’s only mental/emotional abuse…which this wasn’t.

Also, I didn’t care about the plot either…but maybe my perception was skewed due to the bullying.

I had some serious personal issues with some parts of this book. But overall it was my personal opinion and I've gotten over it as I continue to read this book. I didn't like the way this book end but damn the beginning was awesome but it seems somewhere in the middle the author lost her mojo. Gosh Eva, I sure hope it returns when I jump into book 2 of this series or I would be gravely disappointed. Since you're a new author to me it's unfortunate that yes I will judge you off of one book series and it's sad to say if I don't get the satisfaction in this series it's highly likely I wouldn't read anything else by you. It's just the way the cookie crumbles... there's just too much competition out there for RH romance and I'm seriously getting sick and tired of the mediocre books being released. So I have a voice and I will use it rather people listen or not... (shoulder shrug)

Im mostly invested in the mystery/story side rather than the romance tbh which i mean is good and fine but id hope the two would be just as important and good given its RH so im reading more for the romance than story usually. But hey i enjoyed it. Wasnt exactly what i expected nor was it like particularly happy or exciting but it was good solid story. Things were breezed over which im fine with mostly. I wish there had been more romance or more interactions so that the relationship development felt like real etc rather than weeks past and we all grew closer or better as a team etc. Like i get noone wants weeks of story of the same thinf over and over but i felt their couldve been more scenes investing in the romantic plot showing the pivotal scenes at least rather than the bare becessities and even then a lot was super short or cut short because of danger or whatever. Like dont get me wrong sexy times during hell isnt a thing thats top priority and i get that especially for newer relationships but how is there no real like group bonding or banter besides the token they laughed from afar odd insult or their in the vicinty and tunred the school against her whatever like that wasnt even discussed like hello did they apologise did they say why they felt not only they disliked her or treated her shitty but that they also decided to use their influence to do so with others i mean besides somw tidbits here and their i know fuck all about these characters and the tidbits were more info snippits instead of showing their character through actions or general conversations or friendships i mean surely this wouldve been a good book to have the guys pov scattered throughout. So we knew them maybe saw their side or at least had some experience besides hers. I mean its like mental emotional whiplash i get those sorta survival experiences bring people very unbreakably close very quickly but like surely we shouldve seen the guys friendship i mean theyre suppose to be friends but like ive read a lot and i mean A LOT of rh and they seemed like strangers at most maybe classmates who were sorta friendly with eachother but not particularly invested either way iean their was no talk of their first year or ehy their friends or like what i feel like while i clearly enjoyed this story and book it was lacking in a major way character wise that makes my head spin. Which is a damn shame since what i did get was really promising just poorly executed or just rushed for the sake of story idk.

Paranormal, RH, Strong sassy hard hard-headed FMC, 19+ yrs, bully (a little) academy, fast burn, open door book.

It was fast-paced, exciting, thrilling, annoying due to FMC being a bit of a dick herself, but satisfying when she shows she understands how much of a dick she's been to. I like it was different in the FMC being just a cowardly in commitment as other MMCs from other books have been.

would recommend

Genre/Tropes: Fantasy, RH, Academy
POV: 1st, FMC
Series: Magic Blessed Academy, Book 1
STEAM LEVEL: 🔥🔥🔥

I have to admit I loved this quick-paced fantasy romance. The plot and the progression were just fantastic and kept my attention. The romance was fun and while it didn’t feel very developed, we have two more books to go in this series.

Aria is a kickass fighter living in a world where some people have magic and some don’t. After a fight, she gets cornered and her powers emerge, forcing her to attend Blessed Academy. There, she runs into an old flame, Merrick, an Irish biker, Lachlan, and an ex rock star, Trace. Of course they’re all friends and because Merrick is pissed at Aria for running from him, they give her the cold shoulder and do what they can to taunt her.

Then they enter the Gods Challenge and end up forming a team to survive. As they make their way through enemies and trials, their bond grows. We get a few steamy scenes that were awesome and I know it’s just going to get better. Of course Aria had to take a dive off the cliff and it takes a while for that to happen but I’m so ready for the rest of the series!

Apparently I’ve have this book on my ‘to be read’ for over a year...I probably should have left it there.

This was a DNF for me as I couldn’t get into the characters at all! There was no buildup whatsoever to the FMC and the MCs with their interactions. You literally meet them all once (barely) and then sudden it’s a week into the academy and they all are super mean to her? What???

I feel like if there had been more backstory and context this book would be way better but I finally got to the cliché ‘do you want to build a harem?’ scene and gave up! I don’t care they’ve been apparently travelling for ages together (we have to take the author’s word for that since she doesn’t show us ANY of it!) - no way would be be so into the idea so quickly!

The little details we do discover about the MCs are very very clearly told not shown.

For example:

FMC to Ex: I basically don’t remember anything about you from our very brief fling, what do you do for a living

Not at all pissed off ex (who still hates her?): you don’t remember? *gasp

FMC: recites whole backstory of Ex despite claiming not to remember

Author: ends conversation whilst laughing maniacally at our confusion

Anyway very clearly I will not continue with this series. It’s a trope of most bully academy tales without anything to back it up. And, whilst the whole God Trials, idea is interesting, there is nothing out behind it. No reaction from FMC about possible death, no information given to the readers. Just bizarre.

*Spoiler Alert*
Aria (FMC) is a kick-ass underground MMA fighter. Shes also known about magic her whole life but shes never had any powers herself or so she thinks until hers emerge one night. Much to her shock. Even more so when strange men turn up and invite her (not that its an invite she can ignore) to Magic Blessed Academy. A place for people like her. The academy is not as straightforward as she'd hoped and it comes with plenty of complications. Namely three guys - Merrick (they have a back story), Lachlan and Trace. All of which try their level best to make her life difficult. Not that she lets them get the better of her. I love that about Aria that shes such a strong character that doesnt care about anyone's opinion of her especially theirs. Its a fantastic start to the series though and a damn fine read

Wow. This was the first book I have read by this author and I loved it. The market is saturated with academy bully romances but this book was proof for me that I can still enjoy them. The main character, Aria, was fun because she was strong but far from perfect. There were times I wanted to shake her but it all fit with her character and backstory. The guys were great and even though they were jerks, one of them had good reason. They weren't so bad that I felt their actions made them irredeemable, thankfully. The best aspect of the book though was the plot. It was different enough to keep me interested but not so complicated that I felt lost. Also, the pacing was perfect and I was engaged from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book!!

Girl discovers she has magic. Girl ends up going to magic school. Cue the sexy bad boy bullies. Girl is the strongest or somehow special.
This story isn’t entirely original, but that’s okay. If done well, it does what it intends and can be a fun and engaging read.

The writing & diction itself isn’t awful. The book has been edited so there aren’t abhorrent grammar and spelling errors.

The problem? Literally the entirety of the relationships happen off-screen. When the FMC starts going to the school, we’re TOLD that the guys bully her. But we don’t actually get SHOWN all the ways that they bully her and all of their initial interactions.

One of the guys is an ex of hers. Usually, when this happens in a romance book, the prologue or initial chapter will take place in the past to give you a glimpse of their relationship then, before everything fell apart. This helps to set up what they’re were and create a structure to allow for the inevitable hate the guy will spew to the FMC. That doesn’t happen here. We just get told they were together…

When they’re in the Gods challenge, they’re in there for weeks and weeks and we barely see a snippet of that.

It makes everything feel shallow & takes away opportunity for the reader to understand the characters and their forming relationships.

I hate when an author just tells you the exposition instead of showing you and immersing you in the story as much as possible. For that reason, this book really falls short for me.

2.5

This is a true 2.5, in the sense that I would have given the first half a 2-star (and felt generous about it), but the second half improves enough to deserve a 3-star. I wavered about which way to round on this one, but decided to round up because the narrator did a good job.

The first half was a struggle for me. I seriously almost DNFed the book. The characters are very shallow and the men, that the reader knows are going to form the reverse harem, are only shown as sexist assholes. We are not given a single redeeming moment with any of them. Honestly, we're not given much of them at all. The reader knows they are the to-be harem because they are the only named men at all, not because Ashwood spends any time developing them. Despite all that, the reader is also told how Aria finds them hot and I was simply indignant on her behalf, to think she would lower herself to be with men who treat her that way. (And it doesn't even rise to enough development for me to call it a bully-romance.)

However, in the second half the personalities change drastically. (We're just going to skip over the 'why would she trust the men who have spent a month demeaning her to team in the first place.') We're given the group working as a team and get to know them A LITTLE better. The shift from platonic to poly is very fast, but it's still satisfying in it's own way.

All in all, if I found the sequel as a freebie I'd probably read it (based on the second half of this book). But I wouldn't pay for it—if that tells you anything.

Book 1 of 3 in the Magic Blessed Academy was a fun little ride. It follows Aria, who became Magic Blessed one night after her MMA fight and was "slightly" ambushed on her way home. I say loosely because she's a bad@ss and took down 4 guys by herself. She doesn't understand how she could just GET magic because she wasn't born with it, but she'd been blessed by the Gods, and now has to attend an academy to learn how to control her magic. That's when she finds out her supposed to be one night stand turned into many also attends this academy and now has half the school talking/against her. You'll understand why if you read it! 😉 But why not learn how to control and use your magic during some deadly games and trials in the Gods' Realm?! That realm.. phewww, no thanks. I'd rather stay in ours! I don't want to go much further, so you'll have to read it to find out more! Enjoy!

It had potential to be a decent series…

UHHHHH this was literally a copy paste of another book but literally can’t remember what book/series it’s from… I just know it’s one of the below:

👉🏼 Curse of The Gods series by Jaymin Eve
👉🏼 the Bonds That Tie series by J Bree
👉🏼 The dark side series by Kristy Cunning

It’s bothering me so bad that I am literally going read this series (it’s like 200 pages per book) figure it out, come back and note which series it is! I HATE authors that copy and if I’m wrong then so be it, I’ll come back and change my review, until then… 🕵🏻‍♀️🧐

No real storyline, character OR story building and the story literally just jumped straight in. Ava Ashwood is so hit and miss and this was just 😑😑😑

The book was good, but could have been better. We have this kick a** heroine (until she wasn't) who gains magic by chance one night and is sent to an academy to learn control. In this academy she sees the "couple night stand" guy she ghosted a few months back. He quickly turns into her bully along with his two friends (no groveling).

The issues I had were the following:
1. Heroine kind of became weak any time she was up against the mmc's
2. There was no real apology or any type of groveling for the bullying. (She's a strong character, so this wasn't as grating as it might have been.)
3. There were some illogical moments and break from character moments that annoyed me.

Very surface level and skipped a lot of plot. It felt like listening to an audiobook on 2.5x speed and missing half the book (except it wasn't there). Instead of the plot to describe and take you through the things happening, it would tell you about them briefly after like a "2 weeks later" skip. Very shallow and minimal character depth and descriptions too

I Give this Book a 4/5 Star Rating.

Format Read: Audiobook & Ebook.

Cliffhanger(?): Yes! I wonder what the heck is going to happen next!
Heat: 3.5-4/5
Drama: 4/5
Suspense: 3.5/5
Romance: 3.5/5
Relationship Type: Reverse Harem > MFMM

Audio Review: 4/5
The Voice Actor is Female, I was surprised she did some pretty good Male Voices, much better than I was expecting. But her voice is very calm so in some areas of the ‘audio’book, the characters emotions weren’t exuding properly.

No Spoilers.
This is a pretty good series, if I say to much then it just gives the book away!
I’m going to jump into Book 2 Now.

It was okay.

Full of angsty, arrogant arrogant male characters, that freeze out the fmc. She thinks they’re hot, but she has a chip on her shoulder. Blah, blah, blah, the usual. Didn’t mind the God Games, but that took up quite a chunk of the book. The ending though, with the cryptic conversation overheard by Ari has me intrigued, but not enough that I need to pick up the next book in a hurry.

Gift of the Gods stayed awfully shallow and it's like it doesn't move beyond the idea of a plot into an actual plot.

The book is so vague, it doesn't want to spend time on building details at all. There is barely enough space for anything to create interest when it's rushing through everything. Aria has just few scenes in the academy to even feel like we are in an academy before we are whipped in the godly realm. The challenge is sprung out of nowhere without the buildup needed to convey the impact it wanted to have. The weakass attempt of creating the bullying environment with the guys is barely paid attention to before we are skipping time and reaching the challenge scenes. The whole challenge itself feels so pointless, I don't have any end goal as a reader other than it's an opportunity to meet the gods. Aria didn't have enough reasons to taken on such a deadly challenge. There is just a lot of content lacking for things to make sense.

I enjoyed the opening scene introducing the FMC but her likeable first impressions don't translate into liking her character with her reactions. Her fallout justification with Merrick is a reason I can't connect with when we are only told about their past, it ends up feeling like a weak reason to create the pissy bullying nonsense that ends up leaving no space to add interactions with the guys and all we have is Aria getting turned on because they are hot, that's it. I don't have anything for the guys until the point they become a team and even here we are skipping time only being told they are working like a unit. I just don't have enough info to either get their pettiness in the beginning or their warm feelings for Aria in the end. Where's the content dude?

The book has lots of skipping time and it even starts on skipping the much needed content to overall end up failing at giving me anything to care about.

Oh wow, I absolutely loved this!! I became a fan of Eva's with the Lost Boys and Who Breaks First, and then she comes out with Gift of the Gods. Totally different and just as freaking good. I loved the aspect of it. Being able to get powers from the gods, drew me in but honestly once you meet Aria, you will fall in love with her. She is a fighter, she knows what she wants and she gets it. She can seriously kick a guys a@@ and it shows. They guys are hot, and yeah I pretty much was just as hooked on them as Aria was.

Gift of the Gods is about Aria, who after one of her underground fights is confronted. Wanting to steal her winnings for the night, some men attacked her. Little did she know that this would bring her powers to the surface. If you are not born with magic, a few are blessed with being blessed by the gods with receiving your powers at a later age. Now Aria's journey starts. Taken to Magic Blessed Academy, she begins her education and new way of life. There she is met with three boys, one of which she has had a very hot history with, who show her who is in charge. But all is fair in love and hate especially when it comes to the God's Challenge. When she goes up against Trace, Merrick and Lachlan, all bets are off.

Once I started GofG, I could not stop reading. Aria is such a cool character. She is such a fighter, never gives up, is loyal once she deems you worthy, and says what she means. The guys, are just as interesting. I perfectly understand ones meanness toward her. And I really liked the direction this storyline is taking. So any fans of Eva's that have enjoyed her previous works, this one is just as awesome and I cannot wait for more.

DNF~ the author felt the need to just skip over, like, everything. Girl gets magic powers? Sweet you get one page info. She goes to a school to learn about her powers? Yup, 2 pages for that. She’s bullied by her love interests? Yes but we only get told it happens, not WHAT happens and only a few sentences of reference to it. But it’s fine because they’re hot.

It’s all rushed to get the story to the god competition that serves no real purpose that I can tell. We have no reason as to why the FMC or anyone should want to voluntarily participate. There’s no character development, relationship interaction besides a sex scene, and nothing about FMCs life at the school.

Gift of the Gods (Magic Blessed Academy, #1) Is definitely worth the read. It's Hunger Games, meets Harry Potter, meets all your Reverse Harem/Bully needs. It's not too much of one or the other, it's a perfect combination meshed together to create a world uniquely it's own. Join the Kick A** FMC, Aria, as she over comes every obstacle that is thrown at her while breaking through her own walls and finding that the 3 A**whole men in her life are just what she needs, and that she is exactly what then needed too, to make it through the life they've been "thrust" into.

Amazing!

Oh my goodness!

This story was fantastic! The character build up, the tension, it all works together to make an explosion to have it all comes together like freaking magic!

The story reminds me of a hunger games mixed with delish man candy and lots of magic!

It will have you on pins and needles the entire book never knowing what is going to happen next.

There is one sexy time scene at the beginning and then the rest is drawn together slowly so I would say it is a slow burn in general.
