It was alright. The plot was a bit meandering, felt like the author forgot what they'd written in earlier parts in terms of what characters were supposed to know and not know. The end also felt very anticlimactic and rushed. After such a long and drawn out build up, the story ended strangely fast following the surprise twist and it felt as if most of the resolution was missing. The male lead was surprisingly nice, I'd say almost too much of a nice guy when it came to the female lead. I wanted him to stand firm on his viewpoint for once instead of giving in every single time. The female lead was very intelligent and strong for most of story and then it seemed as if she kind of lost her character towards the end. Overall, it was a decent story that was mainly about political intrigue with romance supporting it. It was a nice change of pace from the typical love story in historical setting.

It is unfortunate for this book that I read The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage first. In fact it is probably disadvantageous for all books in the scheming genre that I read that one first. It's become a standard few works had been able to live up to. The schemes here are too simplistic. The baddies are oblivious to the max. Admittedly I'm only on chapter 33 out of over 300, so I'm sure it'll get better at some point, but so far nothing much had kept my attention and I kept finding myself wandering to find other books to read. I'll just bow out early for this one.
