Lord of the Mysteries Volume 4

Rate this book
With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, difference machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

This series once treated godhood as a gift—now it slowly becomes a parasite.

Introduction

Just like volume three the tone of the series shifted; this time psychological. While the ending felt similar to earlier installments, the idea behind it significantly changed; the price of knowledge is higher than ever. The atmosphere in this volume felt more suffocating even though Klein Moretti successfully advanced to Sequence 5 in the previous volume. I slowly started to realise how ascension isn't as positive as I initially believed it to be.

Plot

My previous prayers were heard. Many plot points played out like I wished. That made me satisfied. Although I faced some issues.

Pacing
The pacing of Dwayne Dantès’ social and political life felt dragging. Compared to Gehrman Sparrow, the life of the rich tycoon wasn't full of action. It bothered me, 'cause I expected the action to continue like previously. What fascinated me though was Klein Moretti's goal with his new identity and what it's appearance later represented. There wasn't enough conflict to satisfy the reading time I spent, but I later realised that this had a deeper meaning.

Political plot points
Most plot points were driven by politics and high society thanks to Dwayne Dantès. That influenced my reading speed, 'cause I needed time to fully comprehend the politics and later on also military trades. The author didn't dwell too long on these plot points and they weren't overly complicated to understand. I personally just needed more time, not just to comprehend it but also to fully appreciate it—something I wouldn't have been able to do if I read it too quickly.

Non-political plot points
Amongst all the politics and high society one also received sufficient plot points that didn't center on any of that. I personally enjoyed the partnership between Gehrman Sparrow and Alger Wilson where they went on an expedition together. It felt similar to the expeditions of the City of Silver. Not only that but their foundings were related to the Sun god. I also enjoyed the Foggy Town that came afterwards for it's horror atmosphere and the feeling of entrapment. That I wasn't able to understand the mysterious Foggy Town from the start added to my enjoyment. There was also a major emotional payoff that I wished to happen since the last volume.

Losing humanity
The fourth volume centers around Klein Moretti's internal conflicts and the horrors of losing one's own identity. Every time Klein Moretti advanced his mental state became more fragile. What adds to it is his acting methods. His different identities start to blur together—making Klein Moretti slowly unable to tell the difference. At first the power system felt like any other fictional power system but Lord of the Mysteries created an unique power system; one that traps its wielder instead of making its wielder more powerful. Power has its costs and this volume shows it.

Characters

Dwayne Dantès
I have a complicated opinion about this rich tycoon. His character is more than just intriguing; it has many layers to discover. The plot evolving around him was received by me with mixed feelings. On the one hand I wanted to follow Dwayne Dantès’ journey to obtain an aristocratic title and be accepted into high society. On the other hand I wanted to go back to follow Gehrman Sparrow's journey. I praise every book that contains political intrigues done right, but I'm also aware that I prefer books that don't center on just that. Sometimes Dwayne Dantès’ journey felt too political. Sometimes Dwayne Dantès’ journey felt just right. I wouldn't want him to be erased from the plot; after all he made me realise how much Will Auceptin has grown on me over time.
Every flower has something beautiful about it.

Will Auceptin
Stop disturbing me. Letting me be born in peace is the greatest form of gratitude!

He's a selfish and arrogant fetus. I still can't believe that Klein Moretti managed to befriend himself with an unborn child. It sounds so wrong for people that have no context. Makes me wonder if the author did that on purpose. Will Auceptin is similar to Mr. Azik, not by their relationship dynamics with Klein Moretti but by their strength. This fetus reminds me of a different arrogant child which I adore. Whenever Will Auceptin appears I know something funny is about to happen, 'cause of his attitude. I want him to win the fight of fate and that he never stops believing that Klein Moretti will manage to follow suit.
A child should act like a child while they're a child.

Outroduction

This series evolves in a beautiful way. It becomes more and more captivating. The psychology aspects in this volume is an example of that. This volume is all about the true meaning of power in Lord of the Mysteries. At first it appeared to be like any other power system, but it's much more than that. It was never about strength and survival. It was about keeping one's humanity and sanity while advancing to godhood. Something that Mr. Azik lays great importance in. Only by maintaining one's humanity and sanity will one fully advance to godhood.

Each volume just gets better than the last! Klein’s latest persona, Dwayne Dante, is both hilarious and clever, and watching him stir things up in high society is pure fun. Behind all the schemes, he’s quietly moving toward his goal—demigod status.
The Tarot Club members also continue to shine, each developing in meaningful ways—growing bolder, sharper, and more capable. New characters are introduced while familiar ones return, adding even more richness and depth to the world.
By the end of this volume, I was once again in tears. The pursuit of revenge for their captain came at a heavy cost for both Klein and Leonard, leaving the ending both satisfying and heartbreaking. I can tell things are only going to get wilder from here.

“I… Who am I?
A person whose experience as a Nighthawk deeply influenced him;
A person who played safe and was afraid of danger, but was able to persist and give up everything;
A guardian and a miserable wretch.”

5/5

i just finished volume 4 and i'm still emotional. i thought i already escaped the pattern of emotional volume ending because volume 3 broke that, but i was wrong! klein, leonard and ma'am daly finally exacted their revenge against ince zangwill, the one who killed captain dunn smith, but the high price for killing the enemy is out of their control. death is inevitable in this kind of battle but still...

my heart is heavy despite seeing klein advanced once again in his sequence, now finally entering his demigod phase. he has sacrificed so much for this, and the fact that this isn't his final destination yet and he's still far from it, it makes me so sad for him. the higher he goes in his sequence, i feel like the lonelier he becomes. though he has a lot of allies, no one can ever understand him and sincerely share his burden.

and now, additional potential enemies are starting to show themselves. they were mentioned countless times throughout the first three volumes, and now they finally appeared themselves. and they looked like a really formidable ones. on the other hand, klein still looked like a child compared to them when it comes to strength. though he finally advanced at the end of volume 4, he can only barely calls himself a demigod, and his enemies varies from saints to angels to king of angels. and their gazes are now locking into him, and it's making me more anxious.

i'm looking forward to the next volume because i can feel that there will be a lot going on and we're finally reaching the climax of the series!

I still can't believe the ending. It was so heart-rending and tragic and I don't think I will ever get over it. I wish for once, when I'm feeling bad, the book ends well.

Since I’m half way through the series I decided to write my general thoughts in this review about the story overall

After reading the 3rd and 4th book I wanted to give them 3 stars but I couldn’t because that doesn’t encompass the feeling correctly.

So far I honestly get bored a lot while reading each book, and even though the writing style is easy to follow most of the time and fast paced, it becomes frustrating may times because of certain repetitions in phrases or information. And there’s nothing particularly special about, as it doesn’t move me even in scenes that are supposed to be emotional.

I can’t give it 3 stars because I admire the story a lot, like most of the characters and I am excited about the plot in general. It’s actually so cool how big the scale of the story is and how complicated it is, that’s why I don’t fully hate the repetitive wording, because it’s a great reminder in the middle of the story to not get lost. So it’s a love hate thing hehe.

The climax at the end of each book IS cool and all that, but honestly by the time I reach it, sometimes the feeling is eh. I found them also to be repetitive, there’s a formula to them. But of course each ending has a new amazing revelation about the world or story that makes me want to continue the story immediately, especially the ending of this volume.

If the rating scale was from 1 to 10, I feel I would give the series so far a 7.

Amazing volume as always, but obviously the most gut-wrenching end so far. Although it took a lot for them to finally exact revenge to one of the story's antagonist, it sure is worth it. Thinking in that direction, 'took a lot' can be something so grim, especially to Klein who has been walking through this world basically alone. And the performance he had to do for that end that also lead to him achieving his first step to godhood is making me think about the things he also might do for his succeeding sequences, alone. It's so sad.

“I can’t return anymore...”

The nuance of home being constantly and subtly mentioned in this volume left quite such an impression to me in forms of Emperor Roselle's, Mr. Azik, and of course, Klein's.

Klein's identity in this volume is someone who's swimming in the high society's waters in contrast to the previous volumes where he's always at the lower classes. Dwayne Dantes is such a good 'face.'

Erm, honestly I just finished the volume and I want to collect my thoughts first but I don't want to sit on it too much because I know it's better to write this fresh because I'm still literally crying. Very hilarious, exciting, and cool adventure this volumes packed for us readers. And the side storytelling about romance (Ma'am Daly Simone and Captain Dunn Smith) and others are such a treat. A lot of characters were mentioned and got their own uses and roles in this 'big performance' and we also get to meet big powerhouses that have been mentioned ever since this book started. I can't wait for more.

This volume was everything and more than I had expected. I'm still on the high of finishing this and after THAT ending my head is just an emotional mess.

I'm just gonna go through the key stuff that are highlited for me in Undying.

“Let me go. Let me go...” This scene of Klein and his split personality was just chef's kiss... The old two bedroom apartment had me reminiscing the first few days Zhou had entered this world, and looking back to it now, we have come so far like damnn...but even now with our MC as a sequence 4, he is just a singular dot compared to the number of enemies he has after him. It's scary sheesh maybe even I need to set an appointment with Audrey now ...

“The word in Chinese is:
“Home.” ” ... This was expectedly unexpected and brought me to tears along with Klein. I won't lie, in this whole book the word "home" played such an emotional role(also that ending scene with you know what)... Klein struggling with his identity then reinforcing by saying he is "A person from Earth, a person who had been reconstructed from Klein’s memory fragments;
A person whose experience as a Nighthawk deeply influenced him;
A person who played safe and was afraid of danger, but was able to persist and give up everything;
A guardian and a miserable wretch." Was just skskskksk😭😭 And Bernadette's question "Where is home?" Had me screaming like a maniac HOME IS EARTH EARTH IS HOME 😭

Other special scenes that I wanna mention are: Zaratul and the hundreds of hanging puppets, Azik and our dear Evernight Goddess, Daly and Dunn's last dance (what a beautiful yet tragic story), Ince's death and Klein's advancement to a demigod and last but not the least baffling one: the hanging puppets from Earth, I have so many theories (Headline: EARTHLINGS KIDNAPPED AFTER A RANDOM RITUAL FROM DIFFERENT ERAS, THREE EMPTY CRYO PODS, TWO CHINESE TRANSMIGRATORS, LOTS OF COINCIDENCS AND WHO WAS IN THE THIRD POD!?) and guesses for this one. I feel like a crazy scientist who's trying to connect dots lmaoo

Anyways this was an amazing volume and I enjoyed the world building for the higher echelons of society and how stark of a contrast it made with the other ones. Now I'm on my way to Red Priest

Volume 4 of Lord of the Mysteries… I’m crying. It’s so beautiful yet so painful 😭

This volume feels so different from the earlier ones. Before, we followed Klein step by step, but now Cuttlefish keeps things from us. Suddenly, boom —Klein pulls out another hidden card. Technically, he did give us the hints, but in such a sneaky, subtle way that I was too dumb to notice. It feels like he’s always one step ahead, and honestly, I love being fooled.

The Tarot Club members are all growing in their own ways, and watching them makes me so soft. Aww, my little family. And the letter exchange between Klein and Leonard… the letters themselves were fine, but the way both of them react had me giggling like a fool ehehe. Secret vibes, I swear✋🏻😆

Also… Amon keeps flooding my FYP, but he still hasn’t gotten enough time to shine. Please, when will he finally step out of the shadows for real?! *pulling hair

And that ending… oh, that ending. Painful, devastating, but also strangely beautiful. 5 stars from me, no doubt.

Now I’ve just started Volume 5 and… I can’t believe what I’m reading. My baby Klein 💔

Even if it had some slow parts in the beginning, the ending of the volume was so good!!

A lot more information in Azik, and finally, the conclusion and death of Ince, giving us some nice moments with Leonard and Daly, who had a heartbreaking end. I haven't been able to get over Dunn, and then they throw that short paragraph of Daly thinking about him! Devastating

Juuuust casually continuing to inhale this story lmao. I like how this volume wraps up what was previously introduced at the end of volume 1. Still having fun with the worldbuilding and as new characters get introduced, and is interested to see how convoluted the story can get and how it all ties back together.

I read it fast and enjoy it. And it tells something about quality.

But I slightly want more doom to the main character. I want him to struggle a little and it shouldn't be that easy for him. Where are his failures ?

what in the word did I just read... I-I don't want this to end...Goodness😭😭🥀
Ma'am Daly, my love. SHE DIED?! KILL ME UGHHHH
When the author started mentioning her past I felt that the time had come
I saw the "last dance" art when I was at volume 1 and I asked ppl if Dunn will come back alive and asked for no spoilers and they told me no. little do I know that Dunn won't join her but she would...
the degree of their yearning makes me saddd. It was the only ship I standed on...FUHHH
Although she caught me off gard when she told to Dwayne Dante what she wanted to do to Dunn before🗿🗿 (but girl I'll support you on this🤫)
And Leonard... goodness 😭😭🥀
I did laugh alot but when the end came as always I cried so bad😭😭😭
And Klein when he said " Who am I?" I wanted to hug him sm. Matter fact I want to hug all of them! My babies😭😭😭❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹😫
