Rags to Riches #3

Pretty Bride

Rate this book
As keeper of a sacred oath, Aruk allows nothing to tempt him away from his duty. Not gold, not women, not power. So when the barbarian warrior is marooned in the middle of the ocean, his only thought is of escaping the island paradise and continuing his quest.

Until a pretty princess washes up onto the beach. Spoiled and disobedient, Jalisa should have been easy to resist. But when Aruk discovers the secrets concealed by her beautiful smile, he’ll have to decide between his duty and his heart…

Warning: This is a completely over-the-top barbarian fantasy romance, with a hero who battles giant squid and fights off the villain while he and the heroine are, ahem, having an intimate moment. It's fun and ridiculous, and ridiculously fun—but don't worry, it's sweet and hot, too.

Kati Wilde is a tight-lipped, loose-hipped woman of indeterminate age and low breeding. Born into a very large family, she now has a very small family (no laws were broken in this transition), and she writes romantic fiction to assuage her darker urge to write Transformers erotica. She lives in Oregon, so most of you are safely far enough away, and has two old cats.

Kati writes the Hellfire Riders MC romance series and will be publishing her first New Adult novel, Going Nowhere Fast, with Berkley later this year.

About Our Series:

The Motorcycle Clubs series is for romance readers who want all the heat and emotion, but who don’t have all of the time. At this time, we are only publishing novellas — our intention is to provide readers with short (yet satisfying) MC romances. Sometimes we might continue one couple’s story over several novellas, but each individual novella will have a satisfying romantic resolution. Because they are short, we focus the stories on the eroticism and romance, and will be building the MC worlds as each series progresses.

This is the third book in the “Rags to Riches” series that featured a different author for each of the five books. I have named this one my favourite so far! I am a sucker for the theme where our main characters get stranded on an island! In this book our hero gets stranded first and the heroine a little while later! Pretty Bride is a Fantasy genre, so there is some magic in this story... I didn’t mind it at all though.

If you are looking for a quick, sexy read then look no further... this is definitely a great treat!!!

While this isn't a particularly high rating, the MCs still have the same sweetness between each other that I've come to expect between MCs in this series of novellas.

The first two books in the series are still leagues better than this one for several reasons - they have more complexity and depth of emotion with interesting background plots despite being short novellas, the interactions between MCs and the situations they're in are more realistic, full and satisfying. The love the MCs have towards each other and the sacrifices they are willing to make for each other have the ability to clutch your heart in it's fist and never let go.

This novella has the standard sacrificial, decent characters, and dangerous-magic as a running current in the plot but they don't particularly stand out to me unlike the men and women from the previous books with their richer plots. These characters also didn't have enough time together initially to warrant intense lust within Aruk (MMC).. but alright let's suspend disbelief here.. guy has one penis, he thinks with it.. very predictable.. no problem.. pretty common occurrence in books BUT the places and situations they were in very by far the least realistic I've seen in this series. No one can punch a shark sir, no one. I mean, you can try? But punch ≠ dead shark. Let alone multiple dead sharks. No barbarian-bro is ever big enough to accomplish such a feat. It was hilarious to read. And do not get me started on the last half of that sex scene.
And the MCs don't have as many conversations as the previous novellas have. That's why it feels a bit lacking.

There is some beauty to their interactions in a few places though, such as when Jalisa (FMC) is recovering from a deadly wound and Aruk is devoted to taking care of her during that time, their first sex scene dialogues despite the terrible circumstances they're in, their thoughts about each other, realisations of love. It's sweet.
This book is forgettable, but not something I wouldn't recommend if you're getting it on KU and have massive FOMO like me. Nothing special, but nothing unforgivable lol.

❗TW: There are some dark things - there are mentions of r*pe, and her father belongs in hell. These parts in the story are short enough not to throw someone completely off, but brace yourself for how gross and terrible her father is.

My favourite man Strax and Mara from the previous novella appear very briefly in this one.

Part of Dead Lands series

It has been a while since the book about Kael and I didn't think this this next book was ever going to be written. Though at the end of Kael's book the princess goes to Kael's kingdom, which I don't think Jalisa ever did.

This was a pretty good read and I like the explanation of the result of using magic woven with the romance. I especially like how the magic scaled at the end with Jalisa.

This is a fantasy book. It is a short novel by the Dead Lands fantasy romance series. I haven't read any previous books, but I could follow the story just fine. Still not my favourite in the Rags to Riches series.

Una historia diferente? Loca? Exagerada? Todo eso y más.

Pretty Bride de Katy Wilde libro 3 Serie multiautor Rags of riches

This was a fabulous story. Loved both the H and the h in this. This was part of a novella series from a group of authors. This book The Midwinter Mail-Order Bride (Mail-Order Brides, #4) by Kati Wilde was from a previous novella series and was the first book set in this world. It was fabulous too. But both can be read as stand alone.

3.4 stars. This was still enjoyable but much more melodramatic than the others in the series. There are ridiculous events in this, including their first time being in the middle of a fight while she is clinging to him. It is so ridiculous. But I still enjoyed it

This novella is set in the same world as "The Midwinter Mail-Order Bride" and is part of the Dead Lands fantasy romance series but is approximately half the length of that first story. I did like this short story and also enjoyed reading but I absolutely loved the other one.
It was much better and simply wonderful IMO.
She is releasing a third soon called "The Midnight Bride" featuring Aruk's brother Strax, I will probably read that one also as long as I still have my KU membership.

"Pretty Bride" is the story of Jalisa and Aruk.

Firstly, let me confess I was unaware that this book was part of a series and hence in the first half I was extremely confused.

Turns out, this one has romance, magic and loads of angst/drama/sexytime. The heroine is a seemingly snooty princess, the hero a warrior. They cross paths, fall in love, have to fights all kinds of evil, fulfill their sacred oaths and fate and find their HEA.

I wish I could say more but I actually spent most of this book lost, trying to understand WTF was going on. That being said, things did make sense in the second half..a little.

It was good. But I highly recommend reading the series before landing on this.

I really enjoy when this group of authors get together and create a fabulous collection of short stories from different areas of romance this is the third book in the collection and focuses on a Princess and a barbarian.

Aruk passed through Savadon with his brother and Strax and Mara when he spotted the pretty princess that legends were written about but knowing he had a mission to complete, pushed thoughts of he from his mind. He could allow nothing to keep him from his sacred oath. But after he is marooned on an island the last person he was expecting to run into was the princess who has lived in his dreams for the last six months. Now that he has her will he be able to leave her and continue with his life’s work and knowing what her future holds for her can he leave her unprotected?

Jalisa’s beauty is talked about through the lands but she only cares for her people and keeping them safe from her father’s tyranny, many people look at her beauty and that’s all that they see but she is determined to save her people from the life her father has in plan no matter the cost but can she walk away from the man who has stolen her heart and now her father has him how will she protect him?

Totally fantastical story which will leave you with a smile. I really enjoyed it and thought it was a fun little read with amazing chemistry between the two main characters.

Absolutely LOVED this story. Jalisa and Aruk’s Book is definitely my favourite in this series of “Pretty” books. It’s completely outrageous and OTT but it’s meant to be!

Plenty of action, laughs, heat & feels jam packed into this one! So freaking great.

And yet again, I'm in love with the writing style in this series. It was so enchanting and flowery, I was willing to forgive some stuff—stuff that I found usually too cheesy—so I could just enjoying the story from the beginning till the end.

Jalisa is my hero !!

You may taste me now, warrior,” only made him grin.

In the beginning of this story I was over Jalisa. I thought she was a freaking savage. I couldn’t believe she would demand him kill a king just because he wanted her to marry. What I did not know was the flip flopping back story.

When I tell you Kati Wilde can write baby I mean it. I haven’t read many of her books but so far this is giving the journey of a well written fantasy with some loving in the mix. There isn’t nasty scenes and all acts are in love which I really appreciate.

I was so very happy to see that Jalisa was actually kind and just. It was also nice to see that her desires were in helping her kingdom. So much so she was willing to risk so much. As this was not a super long book I can’t say much more without spoiling anything but just know that Aruk from the Dead Lands can be my hero any day !!

I haven’t done this in a while but he’s the line that absolutely ruined me !!

Jalisa could not make that promise. “Some things are worth risking my life for.”

If you haven’t read this book go give it a whirl !! I promise it will definitely be worth it!!!

These OTT fantasy romance novella’s in Kati Wilde’s Dead Lands (and the barbarian’s who live there 😜) are the perfect reason to simply disengage your brain and escape into a magically gritty and bluntly erotic romance.

Chock full of I-can’t-believe-this-shit-is-happening-but-I-freakin-love-it-and-want-more moments, the solid world building I’ve loved previously continues, as does the clever and engaging plot.

Previously teased at the end of ‘Midnight Bride’, here we get the deets on Jalisa, princess of Savadon and the warrior, Aruk.

I loved these two together and any time a “stranded on an island” sitch is in play—I am all over that shit.

Oh, and their wedding? Gives a whooooole new meaning to the phrase ‘Red Wedding’. 😝😝😜😜

Loved every single over-the-top, this-shit-is-ridiculous, I-can’t-stop-smiling moment.

**Sidebar: It has to be said that while this is Aruk’s story, I D-E-voured getting a little more of Strax (Aruk’s brother) and Mara (both from The Midnight Bride), pre their HEA and when they’re still verbally sparring in all their scrumptiously antagonistic glory.**

I’m a fan of this author, but not particularly of this novella. It’s well written, but some of it’s tropes made me really uncomfortable. .

Her world building, an extension of her Dead Lands universe, from her midwinter mail order bride story, was vivid and fascinating, but I’m not convinced that people who haven’t read the previous book will understand the nuances.

Bottom line - I wouldn’t call this a must-read.

He’s a barbarian warrior marooned on an island, she’s a haughty princess who washes up on the beach, and that scene where she finds him in the hut? Gold. 🤣 And basically the whole third act? More 🤣. All of the spicy scenes had me like 🥵🤣🤣🤣.

This was unhinged and steamy shenanigans at its finest. The only thing I wasn’t 100% on board with was the Yoda-like sentence structures at times, but it didn’t bother me TOO much since the book is only 110 pages.

Highly enjoyed this novella, I did.

Super short little novella, didn’t like it quite as much as the previous, but for what it was it was great. I loved getting to see what happened to Aruk, the twin brother lost at sea in the last novella. Also their wedding night was 💀😂 …a lot of unbelievable things happened in this novella (see: killing a giant squid with a tiny rock and many other sea creature adventures), but that scene took the cake and was pretty funny honestly.

3 Pretty Good Stars

✔️ Dual POVs (Aruk x Jalisa)
✔️ Set in fantasy land of The Dead Lands
✔️ Open-door, romantasy (4/5 🌶️)
✔️ Tropes: Forced marriage; heir to the kingdom

This is a truly interesting world with magic that can be used — for a price. This particular story in the series wasn’t my favorite, but it resolved the brother’s story.

This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

DNF - Quit at 25%
I just couldn't get into this story, I think it was the weird way it was written, with the wording almost backwards. Another reviewer described it as being like Yoda talking. I think it was to make it seem more like an old language or something. It just didn't work for me though. I kept having to re-read sentences to make sense of them. This bogged me down & pulled me out of the story. The characters weren't objectionable, it was the actual reading experience over that weird wording that forced me to quit.

At my age, life is to short & my time to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

I didn't mind the writing style with the first two books (very yoda-esque... stand up he was going to do) because I get it's supposed to read like an old English beowulf type of story, but this particular book in the series had it a little too intensely. It just makes it difficult to read when the sentence structure is like that. Especially because between those old english sentences, there is a lot of regular romantasy-styled writing.. so it just makes it feel confusing and hard to read. I think if it was toned down a bit and the author maybe used different stylistic techniques to give that barbarian viking vibe, it would be a much better book.

yes, I will be reading the rest of the books in the series tho

So, I know the author warned us in the synopsis that this was going to get real bonkers, real quick and well, the author delivered. Unfortunately, it wasn't to my taste of bonkers and the whole last bit made me feel a bit ick. I also think that this felt very different to the previous two books in the series. This was not the slowly built agonizing burn but felt every inch the instalove it was. That's fine, I didn't expect different, but I also didn't connect to these characters as much. Then the plot went off the rails and I was like ope, not for me, thanks. I'll be continuing with the series but I've satisfied my need to read bonkers romance for now 😂
