Bernard has decided that he's not going to be like all the other bunnies any more. He's not going to hop when everyone else hops, or bounce when they bounce. And while others might dream of carrots, Bernard's dreams are altogether more...disco!
He starts small, but when he finally gets to groove with grace and jive with joy at Bertie and Brenda's Bunny Ball, Bernard shows the world that being yourself is the very best thing a bunny can be.

When Bernard is awake he acts like any normal rabbit should. But when he is asleep he dreams of less rabbity things. There’s more to being a rabbit than twitching your nose, pricking your ears and eating carrots. And Bernard is going to show his friends who he really is…
This is a funny and fantastic read that is a celebration of embracing your differences and being who you really are. Bernard’s friends are horrified by his un-rabbit-like actions but a little bit of self-expression can go a long way. And once Bernard shows who he really is it isn’t long until the other rabbits are celebrating their true selves too, whether it’s dreaming of cheese or boogieing with Bernard at the disco, these furry friends may all be rabbits but they are certainly not the same.
I love this book and young readers will too! It is full of adorable illustrations and is a cracking ode to self-expression and being accepted by others for who you truly are. As Bernard says, “Even though we’re all the same in many ways, we can all agree that…being yourself is the BEST thing a bunny can be!”
Why blend in when you were born to stand out? Let’s all ‘Be More Bernard.’
Disco Dance Party!
What can I say but, long-overdue though this review is, “Be More Bernard” is a glorious celebration of being true to yourself. With the same author and illustrator pairing as the anarchically hilarious “You Must Bring a Hat,” Simon Philip’s latest story is an altogether gentler tale about a rabbit called Bernard who pretends to fit in with the bunnies around him. When they hop, he hops. When they bounce, he bounces. But deep down Bernard knows he is a different. He doesn’t dream about carrots. No! Bernard, as you might be able to guess from the sparkly front cover, has altogether different dreams – twirly, whirly dreams with glitter balls and roller skates. Try as he might to conform, Bernard bunny realises he can no longer live a lie after an unsavoury episode involving a breakfast bap. Little by little, he makes changes until he is living his best possible life. And it is Bernard’s courage which inspires the other bunnies on the block to be true to themselves too. With Hindley’s captivatingly expressive and humorous illustrations, this tale is a warm fluff ball of a picture book that children and adults are bound to love. Never mind Shakespeare’s “Unto thine own self be true,” just “Be more Bernard!”
