“Funny and helpful – this book will support any child starting their swimming journey!” Simon, Swim School Owner/Teacher

Mitch and Mooch try… books are designed for children aged 3-7. They aren’t just fun stories however, the series is designed with the following educational enhancements:
• Dyslexic friendly font – designed to make it easier for children to differentiate the individual letters so that they can blend the words correctly.
• Text is also against a coloured background and broken up into manageable chunks.
• Comic style dialogue – why not have fun putting on silly voices for the characters?
• A gentle introduction to what to expect from a first lesson in each activity – the books can also be used to support parents encouraging children with SEN needs who may be wary of new environments.
• Inclusive – Mitch and Mooch may be monsters, but we celebrate diversity within the whole class!
• Comprehension – some pages have a comprehension question contained within the illustration – these focus on feelings (e.g. what do you think the character is feeling right now, to help them read expressions) and questions about the story (to check they understand what is happening on a deeper level).
• Search and find pages – finding a certain number of relevant objects within the page – to enhance the child’s comprehension of what is going on in the picture as well as counting skills.
• Usage of common exception words within the text.

A very entertaining book about swimming lessons. The author takes the reader through all the preparation for the swim lessons and then the actual lesson. The book has a mix of narration and speech bubbles, which I really enjoy. The are questions throughout the book (at the bottom of the pages) to use as engagement with kids and for educational purposes as the book is read. The characters are fun and creative. There is some nice humor sprinkled throughout that will get kids giggling. There are advanced vocabulary words which will challenge young readers. There are good lessons here, and not just about swimming. I especially liked the part where one of the main characters comforts another child who appears quite nervous about the swim lesson. The illustrations are simple, but bright and colorful. Kids will surely enjoy them. Well done, overall.

This was not a book I expected, at all! I’m not sure why Mitch and Mooch are purple and have one eye…but it’s one of those things you need to just roll with. Because the fun’s just getting started!

The kids are going to take swimming lessons…which they’re both scared and excited about. Soon they are at the pool, and it seems that it will be just a fun and sweet little book about a kid’s first swim lesson and what to expect.

But that’s not what happens at all, and I cracked up laughing more than once at the unexpected turns! Suffice it to say take your time perusing the funny and colorful illustrations, and you’ll just have to read the book for yourself to understand why there’s a pirate, a duck, and talk of things that most parents cringe from but young kids love…

The whole family will enjoy it, and learn a few new words along the way, too.

This is such a fun and educational book that helps introduce swimming lessons to young children. It is beautifully illustrated with bright and colorful pictures. Mitch and Mooch are two adorable little purple monsters that have many questions regarding their first swimming lesson. I laughed a few times recalling some of the same questions from my own children when they were learning to swim! The story goes on to explain what children will need to prepare for their lesson and what to expect once in the pool. A silly adventure is introduced, and the humor used in this book will help calm little nerves and make first lessons a little less scary.
I love the fact that speech bubbles are used to interact with the child as the story is being read. Comprehension questions are asked and discussion points are introduced making this story very engaging. A very fun read. Well done!

Mitch and Mooch are two monsters who like to try new things but at the same time, they fear the unknown.
The story is a bit chaotic with the pirates and the duck and the treasure, but I think children will like that kind of craziness and I’m sure they will laugh a lot.
On several pages, there are questions to encourage kids to think. There is a lot of vocabulary about the things you need to take to the swimming pool and some words related to it which is a good source to learn more vocabulary.

Treasure the Adventure

This is a wonderful book about learning to swim. It shows quite a few of the exercises I remember doing in the process, like kicking while holding onto the wall. It also shows proper preparation, including clothing, goggles.

One thing the book adds that I never had at my first swimming lesson is pirates, a diving goose, and lost treasure!

There story introduces new vocabulary words, approaching new situations with a sense of curiosity and wonder, while addressing a few common concerns your kids might have about getting in the pool for the first time. Great read!

This would be a fantastic book to read to a child about to start swimming lessons (if they use arm bubbles).
The humour and clear steps will give them something to hold onto if they get scared.

Education clearly can be fun!

Mitch and Mooch have an amazing experience when they go to their first swim lesson. What a great find of the author, Jan Foster, to underbid this fine story with a subtle message of the joy of diversity, the pleasure of accepting and helping and encouraging the others. I love Mooch, Mitch and their mom having one big eye, and their classmates are of different colors. Even a pirate needs to have to learn to swim.

I love the illustrations, they are just fantastic!
And another thing I adore in this book are the interactive questions or remarks to the reader, you can find regular in the narrative. It certainly will focus the kids even more.
I very much recommend!

Mitch and Mooch is a fun tale about children learning to swim. It is quite an adventure involving a pirate, a duck and more! I love that the pages have questions to prompt discussions with kids as they are reading the story. There are also some basic swimming items labeled throughout the story as well which is a nice touch. The colors are bright and capture your eye. I am sure kids will enjoy this fun read.

In this self-published picture book, one-eyed monsters Mitch and Mooch are going to start swim lessons for the first time. Though the beginning of the book seems to follow an ordinary swim lesson preparation (getting swimsuits, googles, meeting the other kids and a swim instructor) there are a few fun twists - like a pirate who can't swim and a giant treasure-seeking duck. This book has an instructional / educational lean as it introduces a few vocabulary words and includes discussion questions.

Mitch and Mooch are learning to swim. The are going to swimming lesson, but first they gather the items they will need. Learning to swim was not exactly as they anticipated but it was a lot of fun.
This is great children’s book full of humour, creativity and imagination. Stories for children are always better if they have lessons that help children build morals, expand knowledge and improve reading skills and comprehension. The illustrations are bright, whimsical and attention getting. Just perfect for young children. The storyline had some unexpected additions that made the story fun and exciting. Like any book reviewing the lessons the book with your children will improve reading comprehension and help children develop good habits. The lessons this book provided include; acceptance of others, trying something new, helping others especially when they are scared, trying your best and encouraging others. This book provides lessons in a fun way that will engage children and create quality family time.
