This was an interesting collection of stories. I appreciate the added notes that explain purely Russian things (that only people of the country would understand). Some stories were better than others but overall they were good.
I was given this book in exchange for a honest review. This is an English translation of Russian short stories and while these stories are quite interesting and different from what I usually read and I am not a native English speaker, the quality of translation varies widely from one story to another and would benefit from being revised. The themes of the short stories are completely different from one another, most of them taking place in modern days cold villages of Russia (I guess a story in Moscow wouldn't carry such a sense of exotic discovery) and most of them share a deep sadness but there is a strong sense of irony that keep the various characters going. The Kazakh story was quite interesting, introducing a subculture that is not often heard of. The Muz'ka story was very short and I didn't see it's point, what thoughts it was trying to convey. I am not sure I would read a whole book from these authors as their stories were quite dark and slow paced, but put together here, short and with their differences, they form a nice view of Russia from a Russian point of view that is quite worth being read and shared.
