The Game #1

Top Priority

Rate this book
In a perfect world, Lucas West would meet someone in one of the BDSM communities he was active in, someone who ached for a Daddy Dom as much as Lucas longed for a Little to care for. They would date, play, build something that was just for them, and share a future together.

In a perfect world, Colt Carter would get through his next deployment and then move closer to DC where he could create at least a semblance of a personal life. He wanted something outside of the Air Force, something kinky, something worth leaving everything behind for eventually. For years, he’d kept his inner Sadist and Daddy Dom locked up, only letting him out to play on rare occasions.

In a perfect world…

In reality, Lucas and Colt met each other.

---

Top Priority is the first novella in The Game Series, a BDSM series where romance meets the reality of kink. Sometimes we fall for someone we don’t match with, sometimes vanilla business gets in the way of kinky pleasure, and sometimes we have to compromise and push ourselves to overcome trauma and insecurities. No matter what, two things are certain. This is not a perfect world, and life never turns out the way you planned.

I'm often stoically silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there's so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There's a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There's time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

Top Priority is not a BDSM novel, but it sets the stage for a BDSM series.

I read this novella in one sitting. It's very sexy and sweet, telling the story of Lucas and Colt, both Daddy Doms, who fall in love after one night together.

Talk about insta love.

Even so, Dee develops the characters enough that I believed in their connection. Lucas (who serves as the narrator) and Colt wait for each other while Colt is deployed oversees (this story takes place circa 2010). They talk and have strong chemistry, despite both being Doms.

While Colt read very toppy to me, with his cocky, all-in personality, Lucas didn't seem like a Daddy. We were told he is, but I didn't get that from him at all.

In the epilogue, the men are looking for a Little to complete them. I am eager to read that book, which is coming next!

Think of this story as the prologue to the The Game series.

Top Priority is a book that I should have had issues with and not liked... but I adored it.

First of all, it's a instalust/instalove situation, which rarely works for me. It is also a novella, and novellas are notoriously difficult to pull off and get the romance right. AND, to top it off, it reads like a prequel of a larger story, where a THIRD guy/love interest is introduced to the mix, no less!

But still... heart eye emojis for daaaaaaays.

I'm a daddy-kink lover, so I really wanted this book because of that. We actually get very little of kink here, but the sex and kink that we do get is HOT. I like bossy men, and I was into the dynamic here.

I'm surprised I got as much romance out of the book as I did because I felt like the guys spent very little time together, but I got a good amount of chemistry. I'm actually excited to see where the story arc will take me, and I'm usually not a fan of M/M/M.

Cara Dee made this story work for me and delivered yet again with a hot story and a promising start to a new series!

3.5 Pretty Boy & Little One Stars

Top Priority isn’t BDSM at all (in my opinion) and it was unfortunate for me but fortunately, as Daddy/boy kink it was just the name and nothing more. Told in single POV, 1st person, it’s the first installment in "The Game" series. Although the second installment is about this couple+1, this one wasn’t cliffy. I don’t know if I can go through book two because they’re going to bring someone else in their home/life (I've read it in its blurb) and I’m not good with those stories but I think I would give it a try, maybe? Top Priority is insta-attraction/lust and angst-free. I liked both characters but prefer more characters’ development but it was understandable as a novella. Overall, I had a good time reading this and hope you like it as well!

5 Smitten Stars ⭐

For a novella, I think it’s true to say I was smitten from the first page. Cara Dee managed to create characters that were genuinely lovable, honest, and real in every sense. 'Top Priority' was romantic and simply alluring. Looking at some of the ratings on Goodreads, I may be the minority, but I don’t care, I loved it…

When pretty boy Lucas West has a car incident, he finds himself stranded overnight in a town he had been passing through. Finding haven in a dive bar, his run of bad luck seems to be continuing and needs to be rescued by military pilot Colt Carter. Both men quickly strike up a comradery over beers and ribs while they try and wait out the raging storm. Although different, both a surprised to learn that the other is gay. Even if their attraction can’t be denied, there is the slight issue of them both being Dominant Tops.

"We’re not going to sleep together", I repeated.

He lifted his hand and ghosted his knuckles along my forearm, touching no more than the fine hairs on my arm. "So you keep tellin’ me."

With this interesting dynamic, how can Colt and Lucas make this work? Not to mention, they’re both passing through town and Colt is scheduled for his next deployment almost immediately.

There is something exciting about love at first sight and the longevity that can come from that. Unless you’ve experienced it, you may not be a believer. I enjoyed the courtship that came from long distance and the faith that both Cal and Lucas placed in each other; to just try. This story was charming and sweet even if the blurb sounded grittier. It mentions BDSM, but it played a very minimal part in this book. 'Top Priority' is a complete standalone, yet their journey continues in 'Their Boy', that I am salivating for!

I have a pavlovian reaction to all things Cara Dee. She writes, I read. It doesn’t matter if it’s something I know I’ll love, something a bit out of my comfort zone or what would normally be a hell no. Actually, it downed on me today that she is among my top three favorite authors, meaning that I consistently love everything she puts out there. I’m not very much into BDSM books, and honestly the “Little” theme makes me cringe a bit, but then I loved Dee’s Power Play so I thought, why not? I’m glad I did.

BDSM might have been a big part of Lucas and Colt’s lifestyle , but at the same time Top Priority is very light on the kink (so if kink is not your thing you should go for it anyway). It’s also pretty unique because rearily do we see so BDSM incompatible MCs who fall in love and try to make things work anyway.

It’s true that this could fall into insta-love category. If you know me, you know that it’s something I hate. Honestly, though, it didn’t feel like it at all here. Maybe because their connection was so instant and strong and went deeper than usually, maybe because there was a very big stretch of time between that one night stand and the day Colt and Lucas reconnected, during which they kept in touch.

I loved the effortless dialogue, the banter, the way the two men kept challenging each other, the out-of-this-world hot sex, the months when they had to stay apart despite their will, and their reconnection.

I wish it had been longer, though. There is a great epilogue in the end but I would have actually liked to see how Colt and Lucas got there, how they managed to overcome their incompatibility or the disappointment that comes from trying but failing.

This was not the last time we saw those two and there is a promise of big things to come in the end of this book. Now that I think about it, a big part of the story is just starting.

Very much recommended!

There are few authors I'll dive heavily into kink for, and Cara Dee is one of them. She grabbed me with Power Play, and I still reread that one.

I was really wondering where she'd take two Daddy Doms and how they'd make that kind of relationship work.

But this book is super kink-lite. The focus is solely on the relationship building of the two MCs and how they fall in love. Kink didn't play that big of a role. It was more about love than anything.

They meet randomly while both are traveling. Sparks fly, and they have an amazing 24 hours together. But they keep in touch, even through a deployment of one of the MCs.

What could've been insta-love was anything but. Dee fleshed out these characters and this relationship so well over the course of those months. I was smitten.

"I don't go on risky adventures. I find my pleasure in the small, everyday things. You, Colt, are a fighter pilot...in every sense of the word. You're the war hero who gets a book deal one day to write your memoirs. You put everything on the line, and I'm...I'm-"
"You're the one we come home to,"he said.

This has no cliffhanger, has a satisfying epilogue, and, like I said, was very kink lite. Fans of this author, even if BDSM isn't your thing, shouldn't avoid this one. I just wish it was longer! I would've actually wanted to know more about how they made it work for so long with two Daddy Doms.

I admit I had fun with this! For how short the story was, I was pretty invested quickly 😂 this is one of those reads that’s like a lil experiment of “am I into that?”

It’s like…. Fluffy x bdsm with a hot pilot?
YES PLEASE SIGN ME THE FUCK UP 🥵🥵🥵
And they’re both tops, so i was confused how that worked, but it just did and I think they’re gonna bring more humans into their mix later to spice things up 🌶️💅🏼

The bdsm element is not that prominent in book1 to be fair, it’s more just discussed and I’m assuming will be explored more in the further books??

I swear I said like 2 days ago I wasn’t into daddy, but maybe it’s just more about context???? 🤷🏻‍♀️ IM NOT SURE YET IM STILL WORKING IT OUT 😂 but daddy references didn’t make me wanna crawl out of my skin and die as much as usual in this one 😂 it’s still not my fave, but again, contextually? Maybe??? 🤪

What happens when two Daddy Tops meet and have an instant chemistry connection that's off the scales?

This book happens. I don't think Cara Dee could write a subject I wouldn't instantly fall in love with and this book is no exception.

It's too short! That's my single complaint, I wanted so much more with Lucas and Colt. I adored their relationship and how, although it could potentially be "instalove-y" it just never felt like that.

The feels are all there as Colt goes on deployment and Lucas has to deal with being the one at home worrying.

That they're both Daddies in search of a little to love and care for is central to the narrative even though theirs is clearly a life long soul bond.

They can find a measure of their kink in taking care of each other but it's not everything.

I love that there is no doubts about who comes first though, each man is completely committed to the other and finding their little isn't something they enter lightly.

There's a couple of pretty big time jumps too which work but made me just wish we'd seen more of their lives together but overall I just loved every bit of this book.

Now roll on book two!

I don't know. This was interesting.

100% insta love. Big time insta love.

Maybe I believed in their connection? I mean they basically had one night together. It was definitely hot. But then they are apart the rest of the book. So....for the "I love you's" to start flying. Eh, I don't know.

The epilogue(s) were different. Two. One waaaaay out in the future. This definitely felt like more of a set-up for the next book and these two becoming a three. Perhaps that one will be more developed?

I don't know. I'm intrigued.

You can't always choose who you fall for.

Top Priority wasn't quite what I expected. That is not necessarily a bad thing, though. I was expecting a lot more kink than there was. There really was very little. That said, the story really excelled in the relationship department. The author nailed it and given just how short this novella is, I find that fairly remarkable.

Colt is a fighter pilot, with an emphasis on 'control freak'. I love that in a Dommy MC. He's also got a sadistic streak, so the fact that Lucas also loves pain, there's definitely some delicious compatibility there, even if Lucas claims to not be submissive, much less a "little". I loved Colt's cockiness and the fact that he knows what he wants and how to get it.

Lucas is in a bit of a rut. He's been working for his father and it's sucking his soul dry. He's ready to make some changes and he wishes he could find a little of his own. Lucas says he isn't submissive, that he had tried it and didn't like it, but unlike Colt, he really didn't strike me as a Dom in Top Priority, either. I'm definitely interested in seeing his character develop further, because I just don't see a Dom in him. It's very possible I am alone in this.

Regardless of kink, Lucas and Colt are very much sexually compatible. Colt being a sadist top and Lucas being a masochist who loves to bottom for rough sex, and the chemistry they brought, Top Priority is hot. From the very first flirtation, I knew I'd love Lucas and Colt together, and I did. I found their relationship very satisfying, but at the same time I want more (because I'm greedy, not because the story felt incomplete).

While Top Priority wasn't all that kinky, I do expect and hope that the next story will be. Top Priority introduces the world and the characters very well and gives us a taste of what might come. And I can't wait.

Recommended.

That blurb immediately caught my eye.
Two doms falling in love? Hell, yes! That sounded like lots of fireworks and headbutting!

I expected two alpha males pretty much ‘battling it out’, in life and in bed.
The fight for dominance would be surely an issue?
And how could a lasting relationship possibly work between them?

What I got is a cute love story between a fighter pilot (Colt) and a marketing expert (Luke)
With no kink whatsoever.
And Luke seems to be pretty happy to let Colt top all the time. I didn’t get too many ‘dom vibes’ from him, at all!

It’s also a serious case of insta-love. These guys meet, spend 24 hours together and that’s more or less it. The speed of their developing ‘relationship’ is acknowledged and discussed quite a few times, trying to explain, but I couldn’t quite buy it.

However, I really liked how the author shows us how hard it is for families of deployed soldiers to live with the constant worry and fear of losing them.
(Personally, I couldn’t cope. And I admire all those people out there who simply get on with that kind of pressure every single day!)

What astonished me was that Colt and Luke would manage to live eight whole years without the kink they both need to feel complete (like having no boy or submissive to look after).
With the introduction of Kit at the end, this is clearly where the next book is heading – the addition of a third into their relationship.

For me, this book somehow lacked depth and a genuine sense of developing feelings. I was surprised when Colt suggests . I also found it hard to believe that they could brush their sexual preferences aside so easily, and that this didn’t cause any more issues between them. The lack of kink was a bit disappointing.

I enjoyed this all in all (and the cover is gorgeous!), but all I can say is .. this is an ok read, but I expected much more.

Despite the shorter length of the story, I managed to be totally invested in Lucas and Colt's fledgling relationship.

The story is focused on the romance and was BDSM light. There's not much more than discussions of kink here, though we do get to see a little bit of Colt's dominant personality. Both are in the BDSM community, are tops and Daddy doms looking for Littles. We are introduced the community and what the men are looking for, but that is about all. Even with them being seemingly incompatible in the bedroom at first glance, that doesn't stop them from hooking up. It also seems that Lucas is a bit more submissive than he believes even though he does a good job of topping from the bottom. These two are sweet, with fun banter and they have smoking hot chemistry.

The men are only physically together for a short time before Colt is deployed to Iraq. Over the course of that deployment, they grow closer and strengthen their bond, so while there was insta-lust, the love does grow over time.

There are two epilogues and a pretty big time jump, but this is only the first part of the story. So how do Lucas and Colt solve the problem of their need for a Little? That will just have to wait until the next book, which I will be grabbing as soon as it comes out. I really want to see these two Daddies in their element.

3 stars ⭐️ The story is somewhat interesting to keep me until the end of it. This wasn't what I expected to read in the first place. I chose Top Priority because of the BDSM theme. But the story wasn't a BDSM at all, but an insta love.

Lucas and Colt both were Daddy Doms. After talking and talking they found each other really compatible. They hadn't done a lot of sex together. But those sex scenes were hot and steamy. There wasn't any angst in the book.
There were some chapters in the book that talked about some stuff of BDSM too.

To be honest, I found some parts of the book were less believable. Besides, it's even better if there were more character development of both MCs. But Top Priority is a novella, and the issues are really reasonable.
The next book is finding Daddies’ little boy. But I don't think I would read it since I'm not a fan of MMM.

You know what I loved about it? The normality, realness and maturity of Lucas and Colt! Two people who are same in a way, yet also different, and who meet each other exactly at the right moment.

Some people find the story rushed, because the characters spent a little more than 24 hours together in the beginning - and the relationship developed over the messages and skype-calls later. I found it believable in every way!
Because I know the feeling and I kind of have a similar experience and sometimes, when the person is right, it doesn't matter how much actual time you have with them, the chemistry and the connection matter. And Ms. Dee wrote it beautifully, she made me believe in these two.

My GR friend Giorgia mentioned in one of her reviews, how horribly fetishized the most MM romances are. It wasn't the case here. Well, there is romance and sex between two gay men, sure, but it's done so easily and naturally, I really felt like the author knew what she was talking about, from LGBTIQ perspective, and it was refreshing.

A sweet and very well written build up for the second story, even if it doesn't feel that way. It can actually be read as a standalone if you don't feel like reading more about those two. But I want more, of course.

Thank you, Isabella, for bringing this author back on my radar, I almost forgot I've got some of her books on my kindle already. :)

3,5 'smut good, the rest meh' stars

I have mixed feelings about this. Sex was hot, no complaints here. So smut delivered ✔️ but I expected more kink, since it's supposed to be BDSM book.

And I was surprised that I got pretty quickly attached to Lucas and Colt, especially because my first impression of Lucas was 'who the fuck is this idiot?'. And then they got separated and I have to say that the long distance relationship was handled well but I just wasn't invested in their individual characters.

There was also a bunch of characters that will probably have their own books later in the series but I just didn't care for them. Also, I apparently missed the info about one of the guys being in air-force and I'm really NOT into military romances.

Anyway, not really having luck with this author. I'll certainly read the next book since the story continues from here but probably not the rest of the series.

dnf @45%, but i will still grace you with my kindle notes, you're welcome

🔫 water pistol emoji because one of the characters is in the military and they should upgrade their equipment to the really cool stuff: a super soaker cps 2000 (yeah i had to google this, i don't just know water pistol names at the top of my head, i'm not that weird)

🔫 both characters are allegedly doms - i say allegedly because i don't believe it

🔫 lucas is totally not dom material, he seems like he would cry if someone looked at him in the wrong way

🔫 everything colt says is cringe. "Anyway. You know I'm a fighter pilot. That's enough to know I'm in the top percentage in the world. In short, I'm great." is this supposed to be hot? i have literally never been less turned on

🔫 the sex scenes in this are hilariously bad. i really had to laugh a few times

🔫 one time Lucas is like "Colt fucked like a god." only to be like "He'd push me to the edge, take me back down, push a bit further, then rinse and repeat, and it was getting old." five seconds later
so what is it. is he just very repetitive and boring or does he fuck like a god? or is that the same thing, idk, i've never fucked a god before

🔫 also they act like colt is the biggest sadist meanwhile their sex is just mid as fuck and literally nothing sadist is going on??? not that i WANT sadism but don't be like "oh you big mean sadist" when in reality it's the most boring missionary sex

🔫 those 45% were literally the driest smut i've ever read, it was just so really boring

🔫 Colt called Facebook, The Facebook once and everyone in a 100km radius lost their boner

"Top Priority" is the first book in Cara Dee's new series "The Game". It's more like a novella and a prequel for the second book but it can be read as a standalone too as it ends with not one but two epilogues!

Lucas and Colt are two very incompatible people who fell in love and decided to fight for what they wanted despite all the ways they didn't fit together. In the end, they managed to win and make a very happy and loving couple.

These two Doms managed to form a bond against all odds and it was amazing to see how it all started and witnessing the progress of them realising what they hoped to get from the other. They had to put aside some of their wants in order to make it together but the way they talked through everything and how honest they were with each other showed how mature and perfect they were together.

The title of the book is a very significant phrase in this couple's life and future and it's not hard to guess why that is.

I haven't decided yet if I'll read Kit's book Their Boy or if I'll choose to keep the first epilogue of Lucas and Colt's book as the end of their story. The reason for that is that I tend to avoid books with more than two Ms, especially if they feature an established couple adding someone new. I'll wait for the blurb, though, before I decide because it's Cara Dee! However, my opinion of Top Priority doesn't change no matter what I'll decide to do. I loved this book!

Even though I'm not sure about Kit's book, I know I'll read Breathless as soon as possible and I can't wait to see what else this series will bring us!

This was just meh for me. I expected something different. There was passion between Colt and Lucas, no doubt, but I thought it would be more kinky and erotic. An I expected more mind-games.

I'm always on the lookout for stories when the main characters have similar tastes. Two doms or two subs. And they have to work around the fact that they want the same from a partner in bed, which is not each other. There isn't many stories like that out there.

So here are to Daddys who both want a Little, instead they find each other. The beginning was promising, the middle was boring, the end was a little cheesy.

I guess the lack of kinkiness can be put down to both men being Daddys and they couldn't play with each other. Though I honestly didn't see the Daddy in Lucas.

In the epilogue, they come to a conclusion, that something is missing, which is sadly not that surprising. So there will be a follow-up book, Their Boy. I would be lying if I said I'm not curious, but I'm less than excited.

This was not as good as I’d hoped it would be. And I guess that’s all down to the fact that I had a hard time liking Colt. He was the sort of person I can’t stand in real life. I know he was a Dom and Doms can be pushy, but to me he was the wrong kind of pushy.

Here we meet Lucas, who is having a very bad day. When his car breaks down he goes to a bar next to the garage where he’s having his car fixed. He is soaking wet and very grumpy when he stumbles in. When he accidentally knocks over a woman, her brothers are ready to teach him a lesson.

That is when Colt steps in. He helps Lucas out and they end up sitting at the bar together sharing a meal. Colt appears to be psychic because he immediately can tell Lucas is a Daddy Dom like him (Colt isn’t really psychic, I just thought it was very unrealistic he could guess this at their first meeting). Despite them appearing to not be compatible, the two really hit it off. And when they spend the night together they are both having a hard time saying goodbye. But Colt, as a fighter pilot, is about to be deployed for the next year, so starting a relationship is not the best idea.

But of course the heart wants what the heart wants, so despite the odds they keep in touch during Colt’s deployment, and even manage to fall in love with each other….

Colt… yeah, he just wasn’t my kind of person. I also thought the Daddy Dom thing was not that present in this book. Now I know this is a setup for the next book, but I guess I was hoping I would connect more with these characters…

The blurbs of Cara Dee's books are always pulling me straight in and Top Priority had the premise of mixing some of my favorite things in M/M Romance books - BDSM, soldiers and the promise of a (potential) menage.

Colt, a soldier that stands shortly before another deployment, and Lucas, who is working for his father, but somehow unhappy with how his life has turned out at 30 years old, couldn't be more different. On the same hand, they couldn't be more similar when it comes to their BDSM and kink preferences - both being tops having a Daddy kink.

It was a pleasure to see how the instant attraction between this two men turned into something deeper, something difficult to have, something that's actually against what they are looking for. And yet - so utterly perfect!

"I don't go on risky adventures. I find my pleasure in the small, everyday things. You, Colt, are a fighter pilot, in every sense of the word. You're the war hero who gets a book deal one day to write your memoirs. You put everything on the line, and I'm...I'm-"
"You're the one we come home to,"he said.

Top Priority is really light on the kink and being only slightly above 100 pages long, I consider it more of a prelude to the actual story that is waiting in the second installment of the series. I really can't wait to see how the relationship between Colt and Lucas develops and whether what they desire is going to have an impact on their love.

I must admit that I really liked both main characters, but I might favor Colt a tiny bit over Lucas. He seems a bit more edgy, a bit more exciting and I really can't wait to get to know him better over the course of this series.

While I am not to fond of the term "little one", I could live with it and it didn't bother me too much, let's see about the next installment in the series.

Not exceptionally well written, but I definitely enjoyed the banter and the dialogues between the characters - it makes them feel very real.

Very much recommended if you are as much into BDSM, soldiers and menage than I am!

I loved these two men. And this author has mad skills when it comes to establishing an amazing connection between MC’s in just 24 hours together before one is deployed for 12 months. I was hooked and devoured this in no time. But honestly, the dual epilogues and the way the next book has been set up kind of has me thrown. I don’t know why. They have each other now they just need their missing piece. Glad I don’t have to wait too long to find out.

A short story to introduce this dynamic couple !

I found this very exciting as a prequel to the next book concerning our men’s desire for a boy of their own. Here we meet the guys who become a couple.
Hardcore Air Force fighter pilot, Colt, big, dynamic, fun and amazing. He’s incredible and attracted to Lucas, as they meet on a stormy night.
Lucas, unsettled and unsatisfied with his life, works for his Dad, but is looking for a better job option. The men have drinks, food and revealing conversations, which lead to shower sharing and very hot sex, multiple times.
They are both Daddy/little, BDSM enthusiasts, the particular kink that draws them. They discuss how their similar likes may cause problems, but they decide to keep in touch, to see how it goes. We learn about Colt’s deployment and battles, and the joyous reunion when he returns. Their time apart, Skyping, etc. has resulted in something special.

I found this deep introduction of our couple to be enlightening and eye-opening. Loved it ! I’m beginning “Their Boy” right away...
