S. J. Howland is a former intelligence analyst who lived in London before deciding to leave the city and move to Norfolk, where she could see the stars.

Her early life is littered with drafts of books that are best left gathering dust, but one particular story just would not leave her alone until it made it out into the world. The Traveller's Stone is the first book in a five-part series, available through Amazon and the second book, The Lore of the Sea, was released in February 2025.

When she is not wrestling with the characters of Haven, some of whom are entirely uncooperative, she may be found roaming by the sea with her dog and reading everything.

The Traveller’s Stone is a YA book for all ages. I’m 71 and absolutely loved this book. The level of enjoyment rivals Lord of the Rings books, the Potter books and Sockett Greeny books. The characters, the hidden world and the adventures steal your time and your heart. You don’t want the book to end. That’s why, Ms Howland, I’m begging you to get Book Two out ASAP. I can only imagine where your story goes next.

I knew on the first page I was going to love The Traveller’s Stone. The characters were immediately relatable. Any book that is so fun to read is an easy 5 stars. This story covers all the bases: hidden power, evil antagonists, doubters, good friends, fantastic beings... and brownies! What I would give to have a brownie or two around (reminded me of Dobby in some ways).

4,5 stars!

Okay, I am a sucker for Portal Fantasy stories, so when I came across this book, I was instantly excited! And boy, I was not disappointed!

As I started reading, I got a serious flashback feeling of the first book in the Percy Jackson Series. This book is also about a young teenager, and his first encounter with the extraordinary is also at a museum.
I don’t know if it’s because I got the same feeling as when reading The Lightning Thief (one of my alltime favorite book series!), but I instantly felt connected to main character Xander King.

The book’s written in British English, and all the words are written in full, like ‘He could not look away’ instead of ‘He couldn’t look away’, which did slow down my reading a bit. But only in the beginning as it’s just different than what I’ve been reading lately and I had to adjust.

The targeted audience, based on the writing, feels definitely more towards Middle Grade or Young Adult, but with use of some big words like peremptorily or acquiescence. I consider myself pretty well read in the English language (even though it’s not my native language), but I had to look up the meaning of these words! Personally, I felt a bit torn about the use of these kind of words, considering the age group.

Concerning grammar, this is definitely one of the best edited stories I’ve read from an Indie Author. Hardly any grammar issues, and the few I did notice, were so minor that anyone could’ve overlooked it. And none actually intervened with the enjoyment of the story, which to me is a big plus!
Though I did find quite a bit of passive writing, which can be a threat to readability: “Xander felt a swift, crawling sensation down his spine.” Making it more active would be better: “A swift, crawling sensation went down Xander’s spine.”
Story wise, there were a few issues. A few questions during reading weren’t answered, which I did expect to know after finishing this book. Like, why didn’t Xander object when he was first introduced to this whole new magical world? I couldn’t help but wonder why a 14 year old would do as he’s told by strangers, and follow them through several magical settings, when he had no idea what was going on or even where they’re going. Especially because I, as the reader, was just as gob smacked and confused as Xander about what was going on. I’m sure it’s because he’s just very curious to find out more about what’s happening, but some communication would’ve benefited that part of the story.
The scene in the kitchen after they arrive at the Stanton house made up for this though, but it did feel a little too late for me.

Another question quickly followed: why did the Stanton family take in Xander? He’s a boy they don’t know, who exhibits abilities they hadn’t seen before in someone from another world. Why were they so easily trusting him? Either I have totally read over the part where this was explained, or it was just not clear enough.

As Xander practices his powers, he’s told he’s a natural. The fact that he seemed to get everything handled so quickly is something that kind of gets underneath my skin because I don’t believe it to be realistic. After all, to master most things in life it takes practice, practice, practice. Call me crazy, but I like it when someone struggles a bit to come into their powers. Or at least let it have some effect on them, mentally or physically. It makes the story more humanizing to me. Not the superhero kind of character who seems to have no flaws whatsoever.
Fortunately, Xander being a natural is being tested later on in the story and we find out he does face some difficulties. I’m glad the author decided to go that route with him.

A lot of characters were introduced quickly one after the other. That, to me, was a bit jarring and while reading I had a hard time remembering who was who and what role they had in the story.
Like the scene where Xander meets the Stanton family. By introducing parents and grandparents by name, instead of role, it makes it harder to see them in their roles. For example, Jenna and James were introduced by name, and a quick mention that they were the parents of Ollie, but as the story progressed they were referred to as just Jenna and James. Perhaps if the dialogue added more ‘Mom’ or ‘Dad’ while interacting with them, things would’ve been different. I’m sure this is more personal than objective, but it was something I found myself struggling with.

But to be honest, these issues were minor to me, overshadowed by all the positive things that surprised and inspired me.

The one thing most authors have trouble with while writing a portal fantasy is: “What’s happening in the world they leave behind? How is the absence of the protagonist explained?” S.J. Howland thought this through and I LOVE her explanation of it. And no, I won’t share it – that’s kind of a spoiler. But, let me tell you, it’s good! I just hope she shows a bit of that in the following books. I’m so intrigued to see how that plays out!

Where the beginning of the story gave me Percy Jackson-feels, a later scene (where Xander goes into an Orb Shop) gave me so many Harry Potter vibes. Now, I’m not a big fan of stories that seem to copy other (famous) stories so I’m always extra aware when I get these feels. I don’t want to read a rip off from another book, even if it’s just a scene. But as I read these scenes, it made me smile and giggle. Her scenes definitely had their own vibe and it just proved to me that the author was probably just inspired by those other books. #highfive

What also stuck out to me was the way the author described certain trivial events. Like the next scene, which took place in the magical world:
“A young woman walked past, her head bent to speak to the small children holding her hands, with bags of groceries bobbing behind her like ducklings following their mother.”
I could visualize it with ease and I love these kind of visuals in a magical world. Carrying groceries is such a normal thing to do, but to see an author think about how that would translate into a magical world is just awesome to me. It’s these little details that make a story come alive.

Oh, and without spoiling anything (I hope), how COOL is it to use the constellation as part of a puzzle to solve – I love it! #nerdgirl

I had a hard time really grasping the danger in this book. I kept waiting for it to become really exciting, where my eyes would stay glued to the pages.
The scenes that did have the potential – like Xander’s encounters with the Shadows – were too brief to really get me riled up and eager to read further. But seeing as this is just the first book in a series, and it’s common to kind of ‘ease into’ the story, I’m pretty sure the author will play more with that in the coming books.
The ending was clean, no cliffhangers (Thank you!) and the most vital questions were answered, but enough was left unclear for the story to continue in the next installment.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It had a lot of fantastical elements, a good storyline, and solid characters. It left me with enough questions I would want to have answered, so the next book will definitely be on my TBR as it releases. Also, and I can’t emphasize this enough, I loved S.J. Howland’s writing style.

The Traveller's Stone by S.J.Howland is a wondrous adventure and coming of age tale. It starts with our hero Xander touching an ancient Egyptian stone at the British Museum. From there the adventure whisks us away to a different land, but one which is connected to our world by portals which Travellers jump through using devices containing crystals on their wrists. Xander finds himself in a strange land but welcomed with warmth and understanding. The novel evolves as the action twists and turns with the horrific shadows that threatening not only Xander but everything.
I adored this novel, I couldn't wait to read it every night at bedtime and will wait with bated breath for the second in the series. The writing is beautiful, the descriptions amazing and I really want to wake up one morning and come downstairs to have my breakfast at the table with the characters where all the action and news happens. If I could rate it 10 stars I would.

It's got a J.K. Rowling vibe

YA jaunt into London/Hidden London...full of all those mythical creatures we'd like to meet up with. Meet them up close and personal with a trio of misfits that leave you thinking Harry, Ron, and that Granger girl. Len, as the lead female character gives you that angst and childhood trauma dose and Ollie is, well, Ron. Xander is a cooler name than Harry, but reluctant hero he most certainly is-sans scar, of course (until a few moments into chapter 2?)

In spite of the paralleling tropes and characters, it is a very fun romp with a few believable myth origin side tracks, and Da Vinci Code moments. Our teen heroes are ignored and dismissed by most adults (and other concerned creatures) in the room but wrangle a few to their side in the fight to save Haven (fun, relatable worldbuilding here).

Try it, I guarantee you'll like it.

I never felt so welcomed in a house like the Stanton's. No wonder Xander hesitated to leave. I could smell the fresh bread in the morning and feel the sparkling sizzling, emanating from Xander's bracelet.
Like Xander, we get pulled into a new strange world very similar to ours and yet so different. The creatures we used to think as myths are walking down the street, and that's not all. I love a book with a complex world and story, full of different creatures and characters.
Sometimes I wished Xander could take more control of an event of a scene, but this is only volume one. There's so much more to learn and more opportunities for Xander to show us what he can do.

I have many favorite bits, but I'll mention just a few. I love whenever Flint talks or interacts with Xander. What a character.
My favorite scene includes a bowl of eyes and giants.
My favorite creatures are nixies, and my favorite chapter is all about brownies.
Looking forward to the next volumes.

A wonderful YA fantasy set in a parallel world! I enjoyed "The Traveller's Stone" immensely from beginning to end! It has strong Harry Potter and Narnia vibes while still being fresh and unique. Plus, the inclusion of portals and how the author used them was quite fun.

I greatly enjoyed Howland's world of Haven and its varied races and locales. The plot was wonderfully unpredictable. The main characters had great chemistry without any romantic subplots. The author tied everything together cleverly in the end, yet left a great hook for the next book.

If you haven't already, read "The Traveller's Stone!" I highly recommend it! 😊

really good story

I do not like reviews that tell you about the story. Talk about giving plots away…

Instead, I will tell you that I have had had this book in my queue to read for a while. I am NOT a teenager, but finally decided to sit down and read it because I liked the Harry Potter books despite those being written for teenagers. I am so glad I did. If you like the Harry Potter series, you will like this story, too. Totally different, except for teens being the main characters. I will be reading the rest of the series because it truly is that enjoyable and the cliffhanger at the end…now I have no choice. Good going SJ Howland! 🤣

Was so pleasantly surprised by this book. Howland has built her world utilizing the familiar characters from British fantasy worlds set in a more modern era (our own). There are so many phrases I am going to have to quote to my students-when I get to see them again... Enjoyed the story which could stand alone but I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series. I don't often come across a book that is hard to put down these days. Well done! Please take the time to read this fine story. You will be so happy that you did!

I really loved this book! It gave me Percy Jackson and Harry Potter flashbacks which is always something I’m looking for in a book. I purposely scout out books that’s will give me that dose of nostalgia. When I first read the summary for this it sounded right up my ally. The Traveler’s Stone did not disappoint. The world is fresh, the character memorable, and the plot is the perfect pace. I loved the direction that this book took and I can’t wait to see how the story continues on. I need the next book soon 😭 so good!!

Zander King's world gets turned upside down when he is attacked by shadow creatures and has a strange encounter with an ancient artifact. He is assisted by a group of odd characters and spirited into a world that until now he thought was reserved for fantasy novels. It seems his ancestry may prove more interesting than he could ever have imagined. Great read with interesting and well developed characters.

Interesting story

It took a while to really grasp the thread of this story. I kept putting it down. Once it jelled, I could not put it down and finished it in one final reading.
I only noted one grammar error, near the end of the book.
I will look into purchasing the next part of the story when it comes available.

Awesome

Really enjoyed this book. World building was unique and character development was good. The story is engaging and hooks you so the story is hard to put down. There are only two criticisms I have for this book and they are very minor. Skeptical is spelled with a K instead of a c and she uses relief too many times as she is describing archeological carvings. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves YA fantasy such as Harry Potter. This is very well written.
