Heartwarming, genuine, and undeniably affecting!

In this latest and final novel in the Winter Day series, The Last Day of Winter, we once again head back to Glasgow, Scotland where friendship will be savoured, tears will be shed, memories will be created, lives will be celebrated, and love will be forged and shared.

The writing is heartfelt and seamless. The characters are sincere, charismatic, eccentric, and lovable. And the plot is the perfect blend of heart, hope, humour, drama, and emotion.

The Last Day of Winter is, ultimately, a story about life, love, loss, dreams, heartbreak, friendship, family, and finding happiness and I absolutely adored it. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and in the end it left me smiling and was a wonderful, unforgettable, bittersweet ending to one of my favourite series of all time.

Thank you to Aria for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first Shari Low book and I am now a huge fan!

A wedding in December, a runaway bride, all set in beautiful Glasgow, Scotland – what is there not to love about this book?

This is a funny, yet heartwarming, sensitive and tender read. Shari Low knows how to find that right balance in writing an excellent rom/com that is not just a shallow read, but an amazing read full of wonderful and thought-out characters that are important part of the story line. The pacing is just right and the story moves in 2 hour increments which is quite a creative way to tell this story.

I absolutely love this book and will definitely be grabbing more Shari Low books for sure.

This was simply beautiful. After reading the book I felt absolutely wrenched out, exhausted. The emotions ravaged me like the seas in stormy weather. Each chapter was a 2 hour interval over a period of 48 hours.

This was book 3, so my characters were back. Caro was in a panic, something was stopping her from marrying Camy. Cammy loved her but was at the risk of being jilted at the alter. Josie was the wedding planner, but had received a devastating news earlier in the day. Stacey was back to declare her love. Seb had a secret to reveal.

Having read many Shari Low books, I knew that the emotions would be expressed beautifully. What I didn't expect were the shockers in this, the way they would carry me from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other. Happiness, sadness, heartbreak, shock, betrayal, anger, I felt all these acutely.

Shari Low is a master storyteller. Her way of embodying the characters and making them whole was a sight to behold. I loved knowing each of them in every book. But this was the perfect culmination, the perfect end to an epic tale foretold since many years.

The relationship between the characters had me sobbing like a baby, the innocence and their love made the ice around my heart break. They genuinely liked and loved each other. The support they gave each other - I longed for such friends. But all was not sweet, the author had added spice to a few characters where I couldn't help feel angry.

I loved the way I was nothing but just cells filled with emotions. My heart was full and empty. The beauty of this book just kept me going long into the day, simply thankful and glad that I got to know these characters.

I loved the book, and it loved me back!!

Caro and Cammy are supposed to be eagerly preparing for their wedding day, but second thoughts have Caro disappearing before she has to walk down the aisle. But if Caro won’t marry him, then TV star Stacey will surely take her place, having traveled all the way from LA to finally tell Cammy how she feels about him. Meanwhile, Seb, perhaps by fate, crosses paths with a wedding member who he might have more than a brief connection to. Then there’s Josie, wedding planner extraordinaire, who’s just trying to hold everything together even after receiving her own devastating news. It’s going to be a long winter’s day …

For a wintry snow-filled wedding, December could not be a better month. It’s just unfortunate that the last thing Caro wants when she wakes up on her wedding day is to get married. After being plagued by a series of nightmares and knowing how badly her parents’ marriage ended, she calls the whole thing off. It’s an explosive opening that author Shari Low expertly manages.

In these first few pages, Low carefully infuses the dramatic with just thew right amount of humor while also keeping everyone involved sympathetic. Sure, Caro is dropping a bombshell at the last possible hour, but she’s so likable and obviously distraught in her concern that it’s hard not to accept her reasoning—and yet Cammy remains such an upstanding guy that he deserves a happy ending. It’s a balancing act, full of believable complications, that Low keeps up again and again.

While the wedding propels the majority of the action, there are three other stories working in tandem with Caro’s. Told in alternating viewpoints over a twenty-four hour period, each of their additions are equally compelling. Stacey has never gotten over Cammy, but struggles being open with him. Seb, still reeling after the death of his wife, stumbles into the wedding practically on accident, but with something major to offer. Either of them could have filled a novel of their own, but Low expertly allows them to share the stage with each other, and the result is a rich exploration of a day in the life of a group of seemingly-loosely connected individuals.

Even so, there’s a star turn in the fourth voice: Josie. Somewhat cantankerous with a firm spirit and deep loyalty, she essentially functions as a matriarch over the proceedings. After being dealt serious medical news at the start, she casts it aside in favor of everyone else’s problems. This results in the some of the most heartfelt, touching moments of the book.

How much action can possible be packed into one day? If you’re Shari Low: an awful lot. There are few writers currently out there who can weave full characters into a slick story of family and romance with seemingly effortless ease. But she does, proving that she’s a master storyteller along the way.

Note: I received a free ARC of this book through NetGalley.

I’m still a bit teary eyed this morning! This one was so painful, yet so beautiful.

A lot of the gang from book 1 in the series and our expected crossovers from other books are back for the grand finale, and oh what a way to bow out.

I clicked very early on what was coming at the end (as I’ve already said I’ve read so many completely out of context of publication dates) but Christ on the cross it hurt no less. I cried, needless to say. Great huge shuddering sobs!!

I genuinely don’t know another author who writes friends and family like Shari Low, I love them so much, I cried so much because the character development is so perfect that I genuinely forget that I don’t really know these women, she can write a proper arsehole aswell, it’s not all sugar coated. She writes Glasgow so perfectly.

This series was everything ❤️
Oh, and I take my hat off to Carhleen McCarron, I’ve often mentioned that I love Helen McAlpine’s narration and on the first book I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy them in the same way, but, I loved the narration.

I think I’m staying on mission Shari for a while, my comfort zone.

Wow, these books by Shari Low have got to be amongst the most emotional reading experiences I’ve ever had.

One Day in Winter, Another Day in Winter and The Last Day in Winter are all set on the Friday before Christmas one year apart. One Day in Summer follows the year after in early summer.

Each story is told over a 24 hour period in Glasgow and focuses on three or four main characters whose lives have somehow become entwined or estranged. Each book has different characters, but some appear in each story, especially the eccentric duo Josie and Val.

Reading the introductory page, I wasn’t too sure that these books were going to be for me. There seemed to be an awful lot of characters, and I wondered if I would be spending too much time trying to get my head around who’s who.

However, from the very first chapter, I was hooked. Each book is very cleverly written, and the words flow effortlessly as more and more secrets unravel. I found them gripping and addictive.

I found that these books evoked so many emotions in me. The storylines cover death, betrayal, friendship, family, love, deceit and so much more. They show both the good and the bad in mankind.

As is so often the case with me and new authors, I started with the last book first

This was an emotional roller-coaster ride for sure, by the end I felt like completely drained. Have you ever read a book which you loved, but by the end you are not just feeling physically shattered but mentally exhausted. You feel as though you have run a marathon followed by a family funeral, This is one of those books, it is compulsive reading one that as soon as you start, it will keep you turning the pages right until that final page.
What I didn't realise when I started this book, and it was only when I saw a post on Social Media, that this is actually the third book in the 'Winter Day' series, how can I not have known that? Not that it really mattered much, as this read as a stand-alone. I would never have thought there were previous instalments, now that I do know I will definitely be reading the previous two.
I have only recently discovered Shari Low's work having only read one of her books before this, and I do have to say that I am completely in awe of her writing. She has a talent of taking the reader out of their warm, safe bubble and making them look at human life in its full glory. She writes from the heart and isn't afraid to tackle to very emotionally fraught subjects that would give another author pause for thought and she does it with the utmost care and respect for the subject and the characters, I love that, her stories are intelligent and sympathetic, they are completely compelling to read and I am really looking forward to reading more from her.
I love how this is written, The Last Day of Winter is told over the course of a couple of days, and it is centre around the wedding of Caro and Cammy, what should be a Fairy-tale December wedding actually turns into something more profound, more shattering and complex, a day that none of the guests, the participants or the readers will be able to forget in a hurry. Caro you could say she is having second thoughts, her secret past and skeletons which she has conveniently hidden in the closet all soon raise their heads and make a grand appearance, which makes Caro wonder if she is doing the right thing, of this is truly what she wants and more then that if it is what the love of her life wants. Cameron (Cammy) wants nothing more than to marry the woman he loves and he will do all in his power to make that happen, only there are a few things not just Caro's past that starts to stand in their way.
One of them just happens Stacey, old friend of both and she loves Cammy she wants him, she can't face the fact that he is to marry another, but can she really ruin another woman's big day and that of the man she says she loves or will she finally see that Cammy isn't for her and find someone who truly sees her for the vibrant woman's she is?
Then there is the wedding planner Josie who not only must handle the delicate and rather confused and complex wedding she has found herself planning, but she must sort out other people problems with a huge one hanging over her own head, she must brave the world with a smile and allow herself to be drawn into another's mess for a short time, but is that the best thing for her to do when she has had the worst news anyone could receive?
As you can gather it is all an emotional train wreck, but each of the characters personal stories and heartache that they must eventually face is so beautifully written, some authors may go above and beyond with the angst and really push each of the characters' troubles on the readers so it's weighs heavy but not Ms Low, she has a real gift for centring the reader right in the middle of the story and taking them on a journey through love, friendship, family and heartache, with the utmost care and sensitivity to the subjects portrayed, this is a real winner, it's an intelligent and brilliantly funny at times.
This is a fascinating look into the complex and sometimes catalyst relationships between family and friends, there are some harsh reminders that life doesn't always play out as we would like it to and some exceedingly touching moments that will give you a moment to pause for thought about what you have just read.

The Last Day of Winter follows a similar format to the others in the Winter Trilogy. The action takes place largely over one day which is broken down into two hours parts. There are four main narrators: Caro who is getting married to Cammy but has a serious case of cold feet, Stacey who is determined to tell Cammy her true feelings before it's too late, Seb an old friend of one of the main character's family and Josie, wedding planner extraordinaire with a secret she will not allow to spoil the big day.

Well, there's certainly plenty going on during this day! I can't really say too much about the plot because I think it would reveal too much of what happens. But as the blurb mentions a runaway bride, I think I am on safe ground when I tell you that Caro has decided she can't possibly get married which leads to a flurry of tension and activity as Josie tries to find out what has happened and to keep Cammy from knowing there could be a very big problem on his big day. I have to say I was quite frustrated with Caro for a large part of the book. I could understand her concerns to a certain extent but for goodness sake, she had the wonderful Cammy to confide in! And what a lovely character Cammy is. Despite all that was going on, he knew that his love for Caro - and hers for him - was absolute and certain. He was incredibly understanding of the situation and generous in his way of dealing with it.

The characters are really what make Shari Low's writing so enjoyable as well as her skill at capturing their emotions perfectly and making them feel so real to her readers. The trilogy has focussed on many characters with some being in each of the books to a greater or lesser degree. The irrepressible Josie is one of these and the standout character for me in this book. I just loved her zest for life, her determination to see Caro and Cammy have a happy ending, her eccentricity and her unabashed bluntness in the way she dealt with everyone. Her love and concern for others shone through all she did. She might be considered a bit of a rough diamond, takes no nonsense from anyone, takes people as she finds them, would do almost anything for anyone and certainly doesn't hold back from speaking her mind!

This book will take you on a real roller-coaster of emotions. There's so much in it about family and friendship, there's romance, there's drama, there are beautifully poignant scenes, there's sorrow but also so much happiness and hope. In The Last Day of Winter, Shari Low has written a touching, emotional and heartwarming story which is a fitting conclusion to the trilogy.

I have been a fan of Shari’s work for a while now. I love the way in which she combines the drama with the emotional and also treats serious subjects with great compassion and sympathy. I have read quite a few of Shari’s books now and I have loved each and every one of them. I read the synopsis for ‘The Last Day In Winter’ and it certainly sounded like just my kind of read. I couldn’t wait to start reading and I jumped straight in as the saying goes. Oh my, ‘The Last Day Of Winter’ was definitely a read and a half, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
The cast of characters in this book are certainly interesting. I can’t say that I favoured one over the other and there were some that I took to and some that I didn’t take to. The main body of the story is to do with the wedding of two of the main characters. In some way or another each character has something to do with the wedding or they have some sort of connection with the two main characters. Each character has some shocking news to share or some secret that they don’t want other people to know about.
It didn’t take me long at all to get into this book. In fact by the end of the first paragraph of the story I knew that I wouldn’t be able to put this beautifully written book down. I must be psychic because that’s exactly what happened. I couldn’t put the book down. It wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. It was as if I didn’t want to miss a single second of the story or I couldn’t afford to miss any part of the different characters’ story. The pages turned over increasingly quickly as my desperation to find out how the story concluded steadily grew and grew. It seemed to take me next to no time to get to the end of the story which I was disappointed about. I don’t mean that to sound negative but I was enjoying the author’s writing style, the characters and the storylines so much that I just wanted the story to continue.
‘The Last Day Of Winter’ is beautifully and sensitively written but then I find that to be true of all of Shari’s books. She draws you into the story from the first word on the first page and before long you are taken on an interesting but emotional journey. Once Shari has your attention, she will not let it go until you get to the last word on the last page. Saying that though I have found that even when I had finished reading the book, the different stories and characters stayed with me for a long period of time. Shari writes about some difficult subjects with great compassion and sensitivity, whilst at the same time being very matter of fact about things. Shari writes so realistically and uses such vivid descriptions that I really did feel as though I was a character and part of this story myself.
Reading ‘The Last Day Of Winter’ certainly took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride with all sorts of different and contrasting emotions being added into the mix. There were several times where I welled up and I was on the brink of tears more than once. At the same time there were a few times when I either smiled or chuckled at certain bits of the book as I imagined what had happened in my head. I have a very vivid imagination which helps.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Last Day Of Winter’. I will definitely be recommending this book to other readers. In fact I recommend Shari and all of her books to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Shari’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

The Last Day of Winter by Shari Low a five-star read that will stay with you longer than just one season. I adore Shari Low, her writing always brings a smile to my face, this story nearly broke my face I smiled so much, but as ever its not just all sunshine there is drama and passion as well. I loved One Day in Winter and Another Day in Winter, but The Last day od Winter was just so much stronger, Josie gets her moment of winter and I adore her. This story starts with a Kabloom and just gets better and better, you will laugh so hard you will have tears rolling down your face. Be warned do not plan on doing anything when you start this story as it will not get done, you just won’t be able to put it down. It has taken me days to write this review as I couldn’t get the words to come out and do this amazing story justice.

(I received a digital ARC via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

Is it just me or her writing's kinda.. change?
The Other Wives Club set me to an experience of a heartwarming family drama (and funny scenes), while The Last Day of Winter was just okay.

And it's definitely not the course of how she writes thing (I can recognize her style from a mile away), but how she chose to write the first half of the book.
Sure, we cut the chase directly to the day of the (supposedly) wedding of Cammy and Caro, but it felt rushed and filled with exposition and I couldn't find any care to give to any of the character!

I still finished the book in one day and still liking it in the end, but just so.

I ordered this as soon as I'd finished One Day In Winter (it's the third in the trilogy, but the second one seems to feature different characters, maybe I will pick that up next winter!) and read it early in January. It's set in December, though doesn't have an overly Christmassy context. Anyway, I was still in the festive mood; the decorations were still up and Twelfth Night hadn't happened, so ... It was a satisfying conclusion for me to the first book, though I was dismayed and amazed in equal measure to find that two characters who had reappeared had become even more terrible than I imagined anyone could possibly be.

Caro and Cammy from the first book are about to get married on this One Day and the emotions and humour that characterised the first story are still there. Will they get married? Will one of their exes wreck the day? Will there be redemption for some? It was a great read, though hard on the emotions at times, and well recommended. Though I think that the ending for one character was unrealistic, I still liked the story. Full of family drama, closure, revelations, endings, beginnings - what's not to like?

A lovely book, and kind of a mash-up between rom-coms starring Julia Roberts and the TV-show "24", since all the events take place simultanously in one single day. Ok, it is not the really the last day of winter (to be honest, winter hasn't even begun on the 20th of December!), I guess the title rather marks the ending of a trilogy. Where we finally meet almost all the characters from book one again (whereas book 2 featured completely different protagonists) and get to know how they are doing 2 years later. Only Bernadette is missing, actually the character I rooted for the most, but well.
There is still enough going on...

The writing style of Shari Low is once again great, I love the way how she can tell stories and make characters come to life in my mind. I also liked the story itself, which consists of a bit of "Runaway Bride", a bit of "My Best Friend's Wedding" and two other rather serious themes. And I honestly didn't know how this story will end, which is a plus in a chick-lit book. However, I found the motives for the actions of several characters a (tiny) bit far-fetched.

But all in all a very good book, and a must-read if you know "One Day in Winter" already.

After a few heavy reads, this was exactly what I needed this weekend! I love the format of these books by Shari Low where the book unfolds over a 24 hour period, revealing parts of the story from different characters' perspectives. There are a lot of characters and yet the author manages to make each one unique and develops them fully enough that I felt fully connected to them. This book brings characters from the previous books in the series but I don't think it was that history that made me feel so invested. The storyline was a bit of a reach in places but fun and fast moving. I'm a bit disappointed this was the last in these series. I'll definitely be checking for more Shari Low books written in this style.

This last book of the trilogy does an excellent job of bringing back our favorite characters and giving us the chance to get to know some who have not been in the spotlight until now.

Our four perspectives are Caro, Josie, Seb, and Stacey. There is a wedding on this Friday before Christmas. December 20, 2019. Who is getting married? Will everyone get to the wedding on time?

I can tell you that with Josie and Val in the mix there will be many a laugh along the way.

The heartwarming conclusion ties up so many loose ends. A winter delight!

I enjoyed this. Nice easy read. There's 3 books in the series which I presumed all followed on from one another but they actually don't. They are all separate stories with different characters, however some of the characters are referenced or appear in the other books so are linked in that way, and I liked that, it was different. The author really does well to get the reader absorbed into the characters lives and despite the books having multiple characters in the stories it wasn't difficult to follow them

The story went slowly with a lot of characters - I don't think this book has major character like other books I have read. Each character has each own thoughts and actions that I need to weave to get one smooth story plot. But Ms Low made this easy since the struggling each character was not too deep and the writing was not complex, although the issues were "heavy".

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading this book.

My problem with this book, much like the other two in the trilogy, is that once you start, you can’t stop. I want to know what will happen next, and to who, so time and commitments just slip away.
The characters are all interlinked in such a beautiful way that I end up caring what happens to them and want to be a part of their journey.
I highly recommend this book, and the other two in the trilogy if you are looking for a new set of friends to spend some time with.

Wonderful

I bought the whole trilogy and oh my, thank goodness I did because I couldn't put them down. The way the Shari writes - the characters are alive, intertwined throughout the trilogy. This book takes you through some significant life experiences which Shari communicates with warmth, realism and empathy, leaving you feeling hopeful and encouraged. I'm off to download more of this great writer.

Perfect Final Part of the Story

Shari Low has me in bits with this final installment. I've loved reading about this family and have cried buckets. It's a beautiful story and this final part is no exception. Cammy and Caro are getting married but there are a few obstacles to overcome first. Shari has created real people who live and love in the beautiful city of Glasgow.
It's an emotional roller coaster for all the right reasons.

It was great to get the back story on Josie who appears as a character in books I read before the winter day series. I should have paid attention to the order or at least publication date. If I find an author that catches my attention I tend to binge read all of their books but unless there are obvious signs that there are series ..... in other words a reading order could be an addition to goodreads

I love Shari’s books . She has a talent for creating wonderful characters, situations that you get really invested in . Heartwarming, heartbreaking and humorous all at the same time without being corny.
This trilogy is no different…. It was interesting to be introduced to some of the characters that I have met in her later books.
I loved it .
Really good narration
