Oh, Christmas Night

Rate this book
Brilliant, but overworked California accountant, Rachel Mills, inherits an old bookstore in Marietta, Montana, just as she’s been passed over for a huge promotion. The smart thing to do would be to buckle down and keep on working. But for the first time in her life, she goes with impulsive and books a flight to Montana to inspect the bookstore, and hopefully have her first white Christmas ever.

Texan lawyer and entrepreneur, Atticus Bowen, has found the perfect location for his next restaurant—the two-story, turn-of-the-century brick building on Marietta’s Main Street. All he has to do is convince the new owner to sell Paradise Books to him. After all, used bookstores aren’t practical or viable businesses, and he’s making Rachel Mills a very generous offer. But instead of jumping on his offer, Rachel decides she’s going to open the bookstore doors for December and ‘explore her options.’

The last thing Rachel expected was to fall in love with the old bookstore, or charming Marietta. She never expected sparks to fly with handsome, arrogant Atticus Bowen, either. Smart, practical Rachel realizes she just might be falling in love with the sexy, opinionated Texan lawyer — something that could prove to be neither smart, nor practical….or the best decision of her life.

Born in Visalia, California, I'm a small town girl at heart. I love central California's golden foothills, oak trees, and the miles of farmland. In my mind, there's nothing sweeter in the world than the heady fragrance of orange blossoms on a sultry summer night.

As a little girl I spent hours on my bed, staring out the window, dreaming of far off places, fearless knights, and happy-ever-after endings. In my imagination I was never the geeky bookworm with the thick coke-bottle glasses, but a princess, a magical fairy, a Joan-of-Arc crusader.

My parents fed my imagination by taking our family to Europe for a year when I was thirteen. The year away changed me (I wasn't a geek for once!) and overseas I discovered a huge and wonderful world with different cultures and customs. I loved everything about Europe, but felt especially passionate about Italy and those gorgeous Italian men (no wonder my first very Presents hero was Italian).

I confess, after that incredible year in Europe, the travel bug bit, and bit hard. I spent much of my high school and college years abroad, studying in South Africa, Japan and Ireland. South Africa remains a country of my heart, the people, the land and politics complex and heart-wrenching.

After my years of traveling and studying I had to settle down and earn a living. With my Bachelors degree from UCLA in American Studies, a program that combines American literature and American history, I've worked in sales and marketing, as well as a director of a non-profit foundation. Later I earned my Masters in Writing from the University of San Francisco and taught jr. high and high school English.

I now live in Seattle and Hawaii with my three sons. I never mind a rainy day, either, because that's when I sit at my desk and write stories about far-away places, fascinating people, and most importantly of all, love. I like a story with a happy ending. We all do.

Sometimes the paths we carve out for our lives aren’t the paths we should be taking. Jane Porter’s OH, CHRISTMAS NIGHT is that heart-warming, charming and sigh-worthy holiday romance that feels like a Hallmark movie with words.

An over-worked, under-appreciated workaholic inherits a charming small-town bookstore, now Rachel just needs to figure out what to do with it. Meanwhile, wealthy businessman, Atticus Bowen wants the bookstore, but his idea is to turn it into an upscale restaurant with no thought to the old books that line ever surface.

Will Rachel and Atticus become real estate rivals or will they find the magic of the holidays, some aged books and the simplicity of a small town a delightful recipe for love? Two believable characters, two hearts, and new dreams to believe in!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Tule Publishing! This is my honest and voluntary review.

After working day and night for a big accounting firm, Rachel Mills is upset when she is passed over for a promotion. When she receives a notice in the mail that she has been given an old bookstore by her Godmother, Rachel decides to take some time off, fly to Montana, and check out Paradise Books. Atticus Bowen owns a chain of steak restaurants and has found the perfect location in Montana. When he spoke to the owner of the bookstore about purchasing the building, he was told that she gave the store to Rachel Mills, and he should discuss it with her. Atticus meets Rachel and makes her a generous offer on the building. But Rachel isn't ready to shake hands on a deal. She wants to try her hand at selling books to see how it goes.

Well, it's the season to read Christmas stories. This one was just OK for me. Rachel seemed like a very level-headed person who would make a plan before reopening the bookstore. But for some reason she just flipped the "closed" sign to "open", dusted off some books, and hoped the public would come running to buy books. Her approach to the business drove me crazy. Atticus seemed like a nice guy. He told Rachel that he would wait for her to make a decision, and he actually helped her with her book business. Not too many people would help the competition. My rating: 3 Stars.

This book hit the spot like a mug of hot chocolate made with water. Like... you drink it, and it's almost fine. But also slightly off.

The characters struck me as bland. And while the book was mostly written well... or... okay... there were odd little things that could have been caught in editing.

Like, "Make sure yourself comfortable and I'll be right back with the wine. And the many instances of "he choked on smothered laughter." And, "her eyes were hot and gritty." MANY times. By the way, Rachel cries a lot. Like approximately 3,217 times in a 200 page book. For someone who self-reports to be stoic and hate feelings, she cries. A. Lot.

I loved the bookstore component. I wish the rest would have fallen in line because it had the potential to be good with that setting. But the doggone, bland watery-hot-chocolate flavor... yckh.

I'd rate this a PG.

3.5 stars, I really wish we could give 1/2 stars.

Oh, Christmas Night is another in the Marietta canon. Rachel, from Irvine, California, has inherited a used bookstore in the Montana town her mom grew up in. Atticus, from Houston, Texas, wants to turn the building into a fancy steakhouse. I feel like the set up is excellent but the story falls a little flat. I liked it but felt impatient sometimes. There is Porter's characteristic warmth and good tie ins with other Marietta based stories. Atticus needs more story, while Rachel's arc is about figuring out how to really live. All of the conflict is based on Rachel's growth, not between the two main characters. We do get a HEA, of course. And as far as a Christmas story goes, it's the setting and time of year, a time of traditions and memories, and what that means for family and life. In that way, it could be any holiday, which is actually a nice difference from other Christmas stories.

You would expect with the set up maybe that Atticus would be an alpha-hole and Rachel to be a confused, what do I want to do with my life, kinda mess. One of those is correct. Atticus is an attorney (of course he is with that name), and not an alpha. He's more of the strong silent type, who does thoughtful things and has the patience of a saint both in waiting to buy the building and waiting for Rachel to get her stuff together. I actually liked him, though he felt a little under-developed.

Rachel is an accountant because "she prefers/likes/is good with numbers/math" - ok side note: this explanation did not work for me and frankly drove me crazy. Great with math, get her into STEM. Likes order and organization and record keeping, that's accounting (and really, this is what Rachel was in it for, the orderly control that she really didn't have in her life). This is based on my own experience in each field, so the repetition of "she's good with numbers" became nails on the chalkboard for me. Others may not care. Moving on. Rachel not only doesn't know whether she wants the bookstore, but she is slowing figuring out that sexism is stifling her career, while her career is stifling her life. This is the arc and the heart of Rachel's journey. Rachel comes alive in moments - when she's discussing driving in her dad's old car, remembering her mom's Christmas ornaments, and towards the end when she finally figures out that she misses traditions and who really wants to golf with the partners anyway? Those are moments when this one shines.

I would give it a 3.5 rating if I could. Overall, I liked it which is literally what 3 stars means on Goodreads (for anyone who doesn't understand my rating). I think it's a nice addition to the Marietta canon but not a lights out loved it story like the Chance Avenue series.

I received and read an e-ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Oh, Christmas Night was my first Jane Porter novel, and it might be my last unfortunately. I never like to judge an author off of one book but this one just didn't do it for me at all. Let list me the reasons...

CONS & oh there were plenty
- Rachel was NOT a likeable character until the last five pages, and even then, that might be a stretch.
-Atticus, the name. I mean it is a story about a bookstore then you name one of the characters after one of the great American novels? really?
-You get a bookstore from your godmother for FREE and not once do you try and call, reach out, send a email or hell a carrier pigeon? Yes, she did eventually but most people wouldn't have waited that long.
-Their love story was 100% unbelieve from start to finish. Suddenly you are going to give up your dream to support this new girl whom you've spent all of 10 hours with?? Come on!
-Rachel seemed very ungrateful for a lot of the things she was practically given.

Now, the pros were far less but the beautiful Montana setting is always a win for me and despite Atticus being a bit dopey at parts he had a great personality and charm. I have to admire that, but honestly this wasn't a win for me, and it sucks because the blurb made this book sound incredible.

Obviously if you have read other reviews then you know I am in the minority here because most reviews for this book were incredible. I might just be judging to harshly and I feel terrible about it because I don't do it often. Try the book though, it wasn't bad just a bit bland for me.

I don't need any excuse to visit Tule Publishing's stories set in Marietta, Montana. In fact, I'm always anticipating the next. I absolutely love the Montana Born books this publisher offers. In fact, I find a lot of new favorite authors. Oh, Christmas Night was a sweet, endearing story. Not only did this novel give us a true love story, but also a Christmas experience; Marietta style. In addition, Jane Porter is an author I have read many times over and her writing is incredible. Her talent for storytelling is the main aspect why I keep coming back for more.

Rachel Mills, a successful accountant in California has once again been passed over for a promotion she believes should have been hers. She is dealing with the stigma of being a woman in a business in which it's blatantly obvious if she were a man, she'd have had a promotion years prior. Is Rachel wasting her time with this company? If so, what other options does she have career wise?

When Rachel receives the gift of a bookstore in Marietta, Montana she is flabbergasted. Her godmother wants Rachel to take over the store and make it her own. Of course, Rachel isn't interested in moving to Montana, yet she is intrigued enough to go and see this store.

Atticus Bowen is a real estate lawyer and restaurant owner. His next endeavor is to open one of his restaurants in Marietta. He wants the bookstore. But as badly as he wants the building, he does not want to undermine Rachel. He makes a generous offer but Rachel has decided to think about it while opening the store and see if it will be profitable.

I very much enjoyed the banter and growing attraction between Rachel and Atticus. Let me say here that while Atticus is the epitome of sexy, successful, wealthy business man, he is first and foremost a gentleman. Atticus was kind, considerate and generous. I truly adored his character. Rachel on the other hand has had a tough past. It's one of the reasons she needs to be successful. because of her past, Rachel is a no-nonsense, overachiever who wants nothing more to be taken seriously and be successful. Sadly because of this, Rachel is a bit boring and a lot standoffish. So, it took me longer to connect with her. However, her persona began to change soon after her arrival in Marietta.

There were so many sweet moments between Rachel and Atticus. Towards the last chapters, the angst began to build and you could literally feel what was coming. Insecurity took a hold of Rachel and almost cost her the love of a great man. I enjoyed this book very much. I also loved getting to read about some of my favorite Marietta citizens.

If you are looking for some amazing Christmas romances, check out Tule Publishing's website and see the amazing books that are currently available or coming soon!

This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)

This book had a great setting and back story. Rachel took a little while to grow on me -- I think because her personality is so different from mine! I loved Atticus from the start. Marietta, Montana sounds like the perfect place to settle down and I enjoyed visiting there.

I checked this book out from the library to read and am voluntarily sharing my honest opinion.

A charming Christmas romance.

I was drawn into this book from the start. I really liked Rachel and wanted the best for her after she got passed over for a promotion at her job. Then, Rachel gets a package from her godmother, Lesley, informing her that she is giving her a book store in Marietta, Montana, the town her Rachel’s mother and grandparents used to live. After arriving in Marietta, Rachel finds herself loving the book store, but it was just more work than she expected.

I wasn’t sure what to think of Atticus, as he wanted to turn the book store into a restaurant, but he quickly changed my mind about him. When Atticus and Rachel started to fall for each other, I couldn’t help but cheer them on. But they had a lot to overcome if they were to get their happily ever after. First off, Atticus lived in Texas and Rachel in California. Rachel was a planner and when Atticus said he wanted to settle down with a wife and family, Rachel got scared and hopped on the next plane back to California. Rachel’s goals didn’t include a husband or children. Was it fate or Christmas magic that helped Rachel realize her goals were outdated and changing them could bring her more happiness? She got the next flight back to Marietta just in time to spend Christmas with Atticus and Lesley.

While reading this book, I could easily visualize Paradise Books and the scent of old books. Rachel and Atticus were some great characters and I enjoyed learning how they changed each other’s life for the better. The setting of Montana at Christmas time made me want to be there. I liked the small town feel and the residents who were more than willing to help Rachel get her store up and running again. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet Christmas story with the feel of a Hallmark channel movie.

Oh Christmas Night is the perfect book to read when trying to capture the holiday spirit. It is set in the magical town of Marietta, Montana which is filled with the Christmas spirit. Rachel visits Marietta when she is gifted a bookstore. Atticus has his eyes on buying the bookstore and converting it into a steakhouse. I love how the character’s relationship grows throughout the book. Rachel has suffered great loss in her life and is afraid to open her heart to love. She is very relatable and lovable. Atticus is a charming guy who captures your heart. Jane Porter is one of my favorite authors. I love her writing style. I always look forward to reading her next book. She expresses the characters and the setting very realistically.

Oh, Christmas Night

The love story of Rachel and Atticus. Rachel works for a account company which promotes men over women. She had been pass over three time and this time the man who got the promotion is not as good as her. Then Rachel's godmother give her a book store and Atticus want to buy it. Will she stay at this company or move to Montana and work the book store or sell to Atticus? Great story.

I have read loads of this author’s books and really enjoyed them. Sadly this was totally different to the romantic fiction I’ve enjoyed previously and I was bored.

I can see that this cosy depiction of life in a small town community might be attractive, but it really didn’t work for me.

It was far too slow and plodding and Rachel’s negativity was a real turn-off. The development of romance between Attisus and Rachel just never rang true.

I found Rachel a very unsympathetic character and her attitude and behaviour was very unengaging.

It’s well written and clearly many folk know this style and love it. Not my cup of tea I’m afraid.

This book was okay. Based on the blurb, I thought I’d like it a lot, but it didn’t quite do it for me. Rachel is so-so, and Atticus is okay. The romance was also okay, but there didn’t seem to be much... chemistry? Can’t quite find the words, but it didn’t seem to develop naturally.

Rachel, a frustrated workaholic accountant, is gifted a book store from her godmother. It’s a surprise considering they haven’t seen or spoken to each other in years, but Rachel decides to check things out. Atticus, a restaurateur, wants to purchase said book store and convert it into the newest location of his restaurant chain. They meet and, of course, sparks start to fly and they each begin to reevaluate their lives and careers.

There are a lot of likable characters in Marietta, but Rachel and Atticus (for some reason) were not as interesting to me as some of the side characters. Maybe the biggest thing to me was that Rachel didn’t try to reach out to Lesley (her godmother) more after receiving the gift. Granted, Lesley was living in another country and all, but isn’t that weird? Atticus also seemed to switch gears real fast when it came to Rachel and the book shop, but at least that’s somewhat explained by his family’s history.

Overall, it was okay. The scenery gave me nice Christmas vibes, but the romance on Christmas Day? Eh. It’s all right.

Oh, Christmas Night by Jane Porter
Starts out with Rachel Mills and she's so disappointed that she did not get the promotion.
She works as an accountant and a man got eh promotion. She'd been the one that had been there the longest.
She receives a package from her godmother and sends a key with Big Sky written on it. It's her book store in Marietta, Montana!
She starts to think all the work she had put into her job and it was going nowhere, maybe time for a change?
Story also follows Atticus Bowen who's a real estate lawyer. He hopes to acquire the building in Marietta and bring his restaurant/steak house there.
They both have arrived in Marietta and discover the town on foot.
Love they are at Marietta during the holidays as the festivities are endless....
She needs to prove to him that she can make a go of it with a profit and like her new job of running the bookshop. Shouldn't be too hard with the supply of books she has to offer and it is Christmas.
Love how the other business in town help her out. She knows he only wants her building. He keeps telling her he wants her to succeed....
Unexpected ending and like it.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Rachel Mills knows that numbers and mathematics will never cause her emotional pain. She believes in logic. She will never be hurt again. Her mother's death taught her that love can break you. I was drawn to Rachel. She's internalized her feelings. I wanted her to learn to laugh and to love. I wanted Rachel to embrace her new opportunity. Paradise Books can give her a new perspective on life. I hoped that Marietta would enchant her just as it did me. Will it bring back memories of her mother? I hoped so. Atticus Bowen is there to convince Rachel to sell the store. I was amazed at how hard he worked to support Rachel. I loved that he wasn't an adversary but a partner. He was so charming and good hearted. What a keeper! He showed her compassion and caring. Jane Porter outdid herself with this sweet holiday romance. The characters, both old and new, warmed my heart. The setting and the sparkling dialogue filled me with happiness. Oh, Christmas Night was perfection. This story put me in the holiday mood.

This is a well written and engaging holiday romance. The setting, a small tourist town in Montana, is perfect for the story. Rachel and Atticus are not the perfect couple at first glance, and their love story is a bit rocky, but everything works out in the end. I really liked both of the main characters and the residents of Marietta are a friendly and interesting bunch. I was less than thrilled with Rachel’s father, who I found to be a bit cold and judgmental, and I wish Lesley the godmother was more involved with the story, but overall, I loved this quick holiday read.

I’m giving this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. It was my first book by this author & I may look into others as I see she has a series featuring all 6 Sheenan brothers. This was a feel-good Christmas book 🎄. Some of my favorite quotes from the book:

❤️Page 149: “Change is an inherent part of life. Sometimes we welcome it. Sometimes we resist it. But change happens, with or without our permission.” -Atticus Bowen
❤️Page 225: “Life is short. There are no guarantees. Seize happiness, and don’t let it go.” -Lesley Hart

If I had to pick one word to describe Jane Porter's Oh, Christmas Night it would be lovely. This is such a beautiful, romantic, sweet story. A perfect Christmas story, complete with small town, snow, Christmas spirit and romance. Set in Marietta, Montana, it brings the town to life and revisits some of our favorite Marietta characters. I loved the ending. It even brought a tear to my eye because it was so touching, and I don't usually cry. Wonderful story. You'll love it.

Oh, Christmas Night is a heartwarming and touching romance featuring an accountant from California who inherits an old book store in Montana, and the handsome Texan who wants to buy the store and turn it into a restaurant. Rachel and Atticus seem mismatched at first, and it was fun watching their relationship grow into something more. Christmas books are always fun for me to read, and throw in a beautiful setting and I'm all in!

Oh Christmas books...I love you so ❤️
Oh, Christmas Night by Jane Porter is a simplistic, but sweet story about personal loss, and how it alters the course of our lives. It is about discovering our true selves and what really makes us uniquely happy, especially when we are free from the fear that hinders us and blocks us from our true path. It’s about moving forward in life to embrace love and hope, and the resultant changes that will occur when one opens up to the possibilities. It’s about being willing to take risks for what you think matters, regardless of the potential consequences.

Oh Christmas Night is also about books, a historic used bookstore filled with well-loved books, a small Montana town, and unexpected opportunities. This story shows that sometimes books are more than just the stories within the pages, but the stories of the books themselves, their history and the lives they’ve touched.
